SEASON 2016-2017 Marc-AndrĂŠ Bougie, Music Director

LETTER FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

MISSION STATEMENT

Welcome to the 11th season of the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra! Fresh from celebrating ten years of great music in our community in 2015-2016, we are committed – more than ever – to sharing with our audience and for generations to come the awe-inspiring symphonic treasures of all times.

The mission of the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra is to pursue, for all, the transformative power of symphonic music through excellence in live performance and education.

This year our concerts will take you through a kaleidoscope of musical experiences, ranging from the timeless sounds of Mozart, Berlioz, & Strauss, to the eclectic music of American masters from the past and present – including our very own Scott Joplin whose 100th anniversary of death we celebrate in 2017. Stay tuned also for some symphonic Rock with The Music of the Eagles, our ever-popular Christmas at the Perot, symphonic Big Band sounds featuring the Texarkana Jazz Orchestra,

and some superb singing on our Night at the Opera. Come, also, for the world class talent that we showcase right here in Texarkana, starting with our very own symphony and the amazing guest artists that we bring to our city. The TSO is our community’s musical flagship, and we are proud to be a leader in all things musical in Texarkana. Please join us on another exciting ride this year, and make sure to bring a friend along to share the power of this experience with them. Their lives will be transformed, and so will yours. Musically yours,

Tubby the Tuba

Everyone has dreams, even tubas...With the help of an unlikely friend Tubby the Tuba discovers that dreams can come true. Follow the adventures of a red polk-a-dot yo-yo, a dapper bullfrog puppet, and a small piece of ribbon, accompanied by George Kleinsinger’s music and Paul Tripp’s story, for a charming virtuoso performance.

The Composer is Dead

There’s dreadful news from the symphony hall—the composer is dead! If you have ever heard an orchestra play, then you know that musicians are most certainly guilty of something. Where exactly were the violins on the night in question? Did anyone see the harp? Is the trumpet protesting a bit too boisterously? In this perplexing murder mystery, everyone seems to have a motive, everyone has an alibi, and nearly everyone is a musical instrument. But the composer is still dead. Perhaps you can solve the crime yourself. Join the Inspector as he interrogates all the unusual suspects. Hear for yourself exactly what took place on that fateful, well-orchestrated evening.

Kiril Laskarov, violin Michael Boudewyns, actor

PEROT THEATRE INFORMATION The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra is honored to call the Perot Theatre home. This Texarkana jewel opened in 1924 as a Saenger Theatre. Called “the most beautiful theatre in the South,” it featured silent movies, movie premieres, the nationally broadcast Fifth Annual War Bond Drive with host Orson Welles, and live performances by Annie Oakley, Will Rogers, and John Barrymore. Due to the growth of the modern movie plex and urban sprawl, the Theatre became a B movie house by the 1970s. The theatre was officially closed in 1977 when the City of Texarkana, TX, purchased it for $19,000. With the help of Texarkana natives H. Ross Perot and his sister, Bette, the theatre was restored to its current elegance at a cost of $2.4 million and reopened in 1981. The theatre is named for Gabriel Ross and Lulu May Perot, lifelong residents of the city and the parents of Ross and Bette. For 35 years the Perot Theatre has played host to some of the most celebrated stage and music performers of our time. For more information about the Perot, rental inquiries, or for a free tour, contact the box office at 903-792-4992.
