TEWKESBURY STYLE with Pretty Special and Butwell & Jones

FLATTER YOUR FIGURE THIS SEASON Whatever your body shape and whatever the weather, tunics still have to be one of the most flattering items of clothing – and so easy to wear. Tunics come in a variety of shapes and styles, so don’t just dismiss them as ‘maternity smocks’ and think they’re not for you. Petite ladies would do best to stick to styles that are not too long and with a slimmer silhouette. Too much fabric will overwhelm your frame. Us larger ladies can opt for the slightly longer and looser styles – still great for skimming those hips and hiding a multitude of sins! A chunky necklace or interesting scarf make a focal point and will help draw the eye away from any areas that you may be self conscious about. For daytime, cool cotton prints look and feel

Birthstone of the Month Everyone is familiar with the colour of Emerald, May’s birthstone. It is easy to picture its vibrant green hue. However, there is a lot going on under its polished surface! The vast majority of emeralds have many little cracks or fissures, known as ‘inclusions’, within them. All kinds of gems have these, but emeralds naturally have more than most, giving them a cloudy appearance. The inclusions make emeralds quite tricky to work with, and the cutter has to strive to min-

imise wastage of valuable gem-quality material. The ‘Emerald Cut’ was first used with emeralds as it was found to complement their much-loved vivid colour. The most famous producer of emeralds is Colombia, but they are mined all across the globe, with depth of colour and amount of inclusions varying a great deal from place to place. Emeralds were regarded as holy by the Incas and the Aztecs and are today considered to bring good luck, promote love and enhance clairvoyant powers. GARDENING with Ernest Bratt

TRADE and DIY WELCOME

PLANTING, RECYCLING AND MICROBES By now the plants are very much alive and a few gaps in the garden might have appeared. One of the primary garden principles Unity is essentially concerned about producing harmony in the garden by simplicity of design, similarity of shapes and repetition of planting, writes Ernest Bratt. Gertrude Jekyll was a pioneer of planting in sweeping drifts and repeating plants across a border to bring ‘peace and harmony’. Interspersed would be one or two surprise plants with architectural features eg Yucca to provide contrast. So when you are purchasing plants from the garden centre aim for fewer varieties to create greater harmony in the border with the odd ‘joker’ to liven the border up. I notice that in Tewkesbury District our recycling rates are improving all the time. One bit of recycling that you might not have considered is the reuse of old guttering. Sow peas into compost in lengths of guttering in a greenhouse and once the plants are well rooted transplant outdoors. Do this by making a trench and sliding the row into position. This avoids disturbing the roots but

remember to water in well. Another simple weed suppressant is old newspaper particularly where you are sowing annuals. Spread the newspaper a few sheets thick and cover with a layer of fresh compost. Sow the seeds and water

seeking out nutrients and water to enhance the tree’s growth. It is called a ‘symbiotic relationship’ with both plant and fungi benefitting each other. Sachets of mycorrhizal fungi are available at good garden centres. We have made a few changes to our website www.galanthusgardendesign.co.uk so do take a look or get in touch (01452 536429) if we at can be of any help.

and you should find they experience less competition from the weeds. Recently I planted with a friend a new Magnolia tree. I enquired whether she had in stock some mycorrhizal fungi only to realise that I was talking in ‘horticultural speak’ which was no use what so ever. Basically this beneficial fungi attach themselves to roots and develop alongside them

The Roses Theatre was full of keen gardeners last month when husband and wife garden designers Ernest and Amanda Bratt agreed to organise a presentation entitled “How does your Garden Grow” on behalf of Gill Powell, fundraising manager at the theatre. This is just one of a number of fundraising events planned over the next few months to help fund the Take Part activities run by theatre staff.

MARITIME VOLUNTEERS LAUNCH SPRING SEASON Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members are now actively involved in preparing their boats in readiness for their Monday training evenings afloat. Head of unit Nic Price said “At the end of March we took part in a flood defence exercise at Lydney and assisted by searching the area for casualties. “We launched our Quicksilver inflatable on the Spring tide just after high water in the fast flowing Severn Estuary (pictured above are Jane Thomas, Tim Huckvale and Ben Foster-Smith). “The whole day was very successful for both the search teams on the water and those members of Severn and Bristol units who took part in land search.” The unit invites anyone interested in learning maritime skills to join them. For details call Nic Price on 07814 913995.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

LANDSCAPED TO PERFECTION This month’s walk is slightly different to our usual ramble in that it is entirely within the grounds of a stunning National Trust property. An entrance fee is payable (free to NT members) but this enchanting stroll through an historic and ever changing landscape is certainly well worth it. Dogs on leads are allowed in the grounds. Croome Park was laid out for the Earl of Coventry in the 18th century, by the celebrated landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Restored comparatively recently, the grounds are recapturing their former glory and each visit to Croome seems to reveal something new. The grounds are dotted with statuary, classical temples and grottoes, with carefully placed follies at distant corners of the park. These are known as ‘eyecatchers.’ An informative leaflet and more detailed route is available from the admission desk. Park at the visitor centre, which itself is a restored wartime hospital. Follow the path as it turns left through some shrubs, to emerge with the Church ahead of you. (1). Bear right down a grassy path and through a small gate to enter the

shrubbery (2) with its wide variety of trees and plants. Pass the temple greenhouse and go through an archway (3) and go over the elegant footbridge ahead of you. On the other bank, bear right (4) and follow the path which skirts the ornamental lake. Cross over the next footbridge (5) on to a small island and over another bridge to enter a small wood. After a short distance the path emerges by the side of the lake and reaches the grotto. Carry on past the archway and first footbridge and go through a gate into the main parkland area. Keep on the path towards Croome Court, which is now open to the public (except on Tuesdays). After the Earls of Coventry left Croome, the house was variously used as a boarding school, hotel and centre for the Hare Krishna

The Lake, Croome Landscape Park faith. All of these tenants left their mark on the property which, although the rooms are largely empty, is atmospheric and interesting to tour. The building also houses a tea room. (6). Passing Croome Court on the left, walk around to the rear of the property and look for the signs to the Rotunda. Keeping the fence on your left, walk through a gap in a wall to enter the home shrubbery. Go up the slope to the Rotunda, which affords excellent views over the open parkland and beyond. Retrace your steps to the house and point 6.

Go up the drive way, which curves left and up towards the church. Look for the path to the right which leads to the ice house (7); this is worth the short detour. The redundant church may also be visited. Retrace your steps back to the visitor centre, where there is a cafe, shop and outdoor picnic areas. Until November, the park, grounds, visitor centre and shop are open from 10am to 5.30pm. Croome Court’s opening times are shorter. For more details please refer to: www. nationaltrust.org.uk

Distance: approx. 2.5 miles, 1 moderate ascent. Car Parking: NT Car Park at visitor centre. Refreshments: Choice of cafés within the park; designated picnic areas in the grounds. Map above not to scale. Guides available from NT shop at the visitor centre.

The Healthy Living Pharmacy programme has started in Gloucestershire, writes Peter Badham. This concept has been tried in Portsmouth with very great success in improving the health outcomes of the locality. The idea is that the whole pharmacy team get behind an integrated package of services and that patients know that the advice, support and guidance are of a national accredited standard. The PCT in Gloucestershire is about to roll out this exciting new plan for some pharmacies in the County on a pilot basis Those pharmacy staff will be trained to the standard of the Royal Society of Public Health to provide the following new services: • NHS Stop smoking service • NHS Weight management service • NHS Alcohol intervention service • NHS supervised consumption, needle exchange and NHS Hep b+c screening • NHS flu vaccination • NHS Minor aliment scheme I will confirm which of

Peter Badham your local pharmacies

have been selected as soon as the programme goes live In addition I will confirm the support patients will receive in each of these health topics. Watch this space: these new services are designed to make a real difference to the health of our County and to help patients change their lives for the better. Peter Badham

Spend 10 minutes reading and thinking before you think of writing anything. Time spent selecting the best questions for you, and jotting down key ideas in response to each question at this stage, is a worthwhile investment. Don’t worry about what anyone else in the exam room is or isn’t

doing – they’re not your problem! Work out how long you have to spend on each question, and what order you’ll answer them in. Jot down the times you’ll need to finish each question, and also mark at least five minutes before the end of each ‘time slot’, as a reminder that you need to read

Preparing for Exams This month counsellor and therapist David Slater provides a short guide to taking examinations. through quickly what you’ve written for each question before moving on to the next. Take one question at a time and answer them as

fully as you can in the time available. Remember to argue, provide evidence, analyse and synthesise – or if you have been given more specific instructions pertinent to your particular subject area or the type of exam you’re taking, then jot those down briefly - and refer to them! Leave a gap on your answer paper at the end of each question, in case you have time to add something you’ve forgotten later on. Leave time to re-read your answers and check that you have said what you meant to say. Check back to the questions frequently, and make sure you have addressed them, using the key terms of the questions themselves in your answers. Immediately after the exam: don’t get involved in a post mortem with your friends about what you did or didn’t write in response to the questions. This is likely to worry you unnecessarily – remember that there are many ways of getting a good mark. I used to be a Head Teacher of a Primary School. This was just at

that point I would suggest that the only person that you have any concern about IS yourself. You owe it to yourself to do as well as you can. Go into the exam room with a clear image in your mind of you doing WELL for yourself. Believe in yourself !

CHARITY NIGHT’S SUCCESS

Julie King of Tewkesbury House Dental Practice has been raising money for the Breast Cancer Unit in Cheltenham, ever since she was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. She normally runs a week long pink event at the Dental Practice in Barton Street each October, but this year she went one better and organised a charity event at the Watson Hall, which was held last month. This turned out to be a fantastic night out for over 180 people. Seventies legends The Union Gap played live, together with Paul Garland's Disco and the Pink Bra Belly Dancing Team. There was also an auction and a raffle, which was drawn by TV presenter Adam Henson of Countryfile fame. Sharon from Tewkesbury Police station also joined in the fun, turning up with her hair died pink after being given permission to do so by her boss. Julie had never done anything like this before but she was so pleased with the response that she is already planning a similar event for 2013.

UP FOR THE BREDON HILL CHALLENGE? Fitness fanatics will be out in force this month, taking part in a challenging charity triathlon around Bredon Hill. The Great Bredon Hill Challenge, on Saturday 12th May, involves a 400 metre swim, 22 mile cycle ride and a 5km run. The start and finish is at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick. The event has been arranged in memory of Henry ScotSimmonds. The organisers say it’s a real opportunity for entrants to get fit and challenge themselves although they intend it to be a fun event where competitors go as fast or slow as they wish. The deserving charities which will benefit from monies raised will be St Richard’s Hospice, Worcester and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. Starting time is 8.00am, with a competitors’ briefing taking place at 7.45am. Free

refreshments will be provided throughout the event (for competitors) and there will be prizes for the fastest in each

HOP POLE IS PUB OF THE YEAR AGAIN Tewkesbury CAMRA’s Pub Of The Year Award, for the third year in succession, has been awarded to The Royal Hop Pole Hotel. The Tewkesbury town centre inn was selected for the quality and choice of ales which it has made available over the last twelve months. The pub continues to offer beers from local breweries and has started to run a regular competition in support of them. Whichever tipple customers judge to be their favourite during the week, it becomes a regular ale for a period of time. The Hop Pole is a popular choice for both local and visiting ale drinkers and Managers Stuart and Linda are always keen to listen to their customers, especially our local ale heroes ‘The Beer Monsters’, a dedicated band of CAMRA members who can be found at this Wetherspoon’s pub most Saturdays. Pictured above are Stuart and Linda receiving the Pub of the Year Award for 2012 from a delegation of CAMRA members and real ale enthusiasts. The Hop Pole was given its ‘Royal’ title following a visit from Princess Mary of Teck in 1891, who would later become Queen Mary.

Helen, who gained a BSc (Honours) in Natural Sciences and Earth Sciences through the Open University, is calling her new venture Black Cat Tuition. Named after her 21 year-old cat Joshua who died recently, the business will be based at Sherford House, opposite the Royal Hop Pole Hotel. Ample parking is available for parents. Helen said: “My job at the cookshop involved a lot of walking and stairs, and having now developed patello-femoral arthritis in my knees and a chronic nerve condition called CRPS following a knee operation last summer, I cannot rush about as I used to! Tutoring is something I

have always wanted to do, so this is a good opportunity for me.” One-to-one tuition will be available for children aged six and upwards, cover English, mathematics, geography and science subjects at both primary and secondary levels.Grammar School entrance exam coaching is also available, as is examination preparation and techniques. Helen offers a free 25 minute interview to discuss individual tutoring requirements. Sessions are available 4pm-6pm on weekdays, until 1pm on Saturdays and from 10am-7pm in school holidays. LOCAL TALENT SHOWCASED AT LAKEFEST Lee Martin runs Lakeside Café & Bar at the popular Croft Farm Water in Bredon’s Hardwick. Last May, in partnership with Martin Newell and Steve Daff, Lee brought the Croft Farm Cider & Music Festival to Tewkesbury - an event which is still talked about to this day. 1500 people were treated to music from the mighty Wurzels, together with local favourites The Roving Crows and many others. Following on from this successful event Lee met Simon Rickards, who had previously been involved with online promotion of The Verve, Richard Ashcroft and had more recently been involved in artist management and general promotion. After advice given to Lee by Simon, he took one of the Croft Farm performers, Avert Francis, under his wing and began managing his career. Lee's most recent venture, with the organisers of the Cider Festival, is Lakefest, to be held on Friday 18th and Sat 19th May. The festival brings the very best music back to Tewkesbury and marks

Avert Francis a huge leap forward in Lee's promotional career. Avert Francis will be one of the local performers taking to the stage, alongside international acts such as Dodgy, Toploader, Reef, EMF and Chesney Hawkes. Originally from Upton upon Severn, Avert Francis writes and plays acoustic folk songs in the vein of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake. Francis taught himself how to play the guitar in the traditional clawhammer fashion after discovering the music of Townes Van Zandt. Also on the Lakefest line-up are local four piece band Kickback. From Tewkesbury, the band plays classic and modern music from the 60s through to the present day. They have been together for over ten years and have a reputation for being one of the best covers bands in the south west. For more details of Lakefest, log on to www.lakefest.co.uk

MORE SPRING PROBLEMS Following on from last month’s article about spring youngsters, we often have a dilemma when it comes to adult animals brought in at this time of year too, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue Centre. We have to bear in mind that any adult admitted to the hospital could well have youngsters that are wholly dependant on our casualty. Whether it is a bird or a mammal, offspring could be left and may struggle to survive without an adult and in the case of very young animals there is little chance at all of their survival. Two recent incidents illustrate the problem for us: We were called to a female, lactating badger that was too badly injured to save and she was put to sleep on admission. Unfortunately there was nothing that we could do about her cubs as we didn’t have a clue where her sett was. All we can do in these circumstances is hope that the cubs are possibly old enough to fend for themselves and advise

the finders to be extra vigilant in the area in case the cubs start wandering around looking for their mother.

A fox was brought in by the RSPCA after being caught round her middle in wire. The skin was not broken but there was some inflammation where the wire had been and our usual course of action for constriction incidents would be to keep the casualty for at least seven days in case of pressure necrosis. This is where the line of the constriction breaks down after a few days, leaving an open, sometimes infected wound.

The vixen, however, was heavily lactating so we knew that she had dependant cubs somewhere. Our dilemma? Do we keep her in for the usual seven days just in case, or do we release her back to her cubs and hope that her injury doesn’t cause any more problems? We opted for the former, gave her a long-acting antibiotic and took her back to where she was found later that night. We can only hope that she made it back to her cubs and that they were still all right after almost 24 hours without mum. Birds are now busy incubating eggs and feeding young and it is impossible to know whether or not an adult bird has dependants when it is brought in to us so we always have to try to get them back out as soon as possible but obviously without compromising the care and treatment that we give to them. It is a very difficult balancing act for us, trying to do the best for adult casualties brought to us whilst remembering that there could well be young out there depending on the adult for their survival. LEGAL MATTERS with Thomson & Bancks

EMPLOYMENT LAW Employment law is an area of law which is fairly fast moving and subject to change. This can sometimes be due to the current political landscape or the influence of trends in European policies. Adjustments also take place on a frequent basis to reflect general economic circumstances and business needs. Because of the frequent pace of change it is often necessary to seek professional advice when faced with uncertainty in the work place. Examples of recent changes are: • On the 6th April 2012 the qualifying period of employment required to bring a claim for unfair dismissal was increased from one to two years for those starting a new job on or after the 6th April 2012. Employee’s whose employment started before the 6th April will remain subject to the one year qualifying period. • Also from the 6th April the rate of statutory sick pay was increased from £81.60 to £85.85 per week. • On the 1st April 2012 statutory maternity and paternity pay increased from £128.73 to £135.45 per week. •

From 1st February 2012 the statutory “cap” on a week’s wage was increased from £400.00 to £430.00 per week. This is relevant to many calculations but most notably to redundancy and unfair dismissal claims.

Going back to the 1st October 2011 changes were implemented to the National minimum wage. From that date the adult hourly rate increased from £5.93 to £6.08 whilst for persons aged between 18 – 21 years of age the rate increased from £4.92 to £4.98 and for 16 – 17 year olds from £3.64 to

£3.68 per hour. It can be a daunting prospect seeking legal advice at times of employment distress but timely advice at an initial stage of potential difficulty can often be beneficial. • Funding options for advice are diverse ranging between a free initial discussion through to hourly rates and fixed fees. Contingency fee’s (no win no fee) can sometimes be available and a possibility of existing legal expenses insurance as part of a household insurance policy may need to be investigated. Union support or CAB assistance may also be available options. David Bloxham is a partner at Quality Solicitors Thomson and Bancks being a specialist employment lawyer and member of the Employment Lawyers association.

LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES HIS SECOND BOOK Local author Dr Andrew Chapman, from Bredon, is due to publish his second book this month. Andrew was a GP in Tewkesbury for twenty five years but now devotes his time to writing and composing. IKON is a historical novel set in the fifteenth century in the Eastern Mediterranean and has been six years in the writing. Andrew's previous novel BEYOND THE SILENCE was published in 2010 and has achieved considerable sales since then. Andrew describes this present novel as an odyssey. It tells the story of a young boy growing up on a small Greek island. The narrative unfolds as he is precipitated into the world of the Near East at a most turbulent time in history. Andrew writes “the writing of this book involved me in a considerable amount of research, at least six months' worth, as it was not a period with which I was at all familiar. “The themes of the book, though set in a world six hundred years removed from our own, have a modern familiarity. “The novel has a strong narrative line but is also likely to challenge the reader's thinking.” Andrew will be sign-

ing copies of his new book at Alison's Bookshop, 138 and 139, High Street, Tewkesbury on Saturday May 19th between 10 am and 12 noon. There is a website for IKON at www.andrewchapmanikon.co.uk.

CROCHET FOR BEGINNERS There will be a crochet workshop for beginners at The Button Drawer in Tewkesbury on Saturday 27th May. ‘Crafty Queen’ Janice Botterill will be teaching her craft from 10am until 1pm. The cost will be £30 per person to include yarn and hook. Refreshments provided. To book, call 01684 438596.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Reader Derek Round of Tewkesbury is trying to locate a former trainspotting pal from sixty years ago. “I’m hoping other Tewkesbury Direct readers might know the whereabouts of Alan Guys, who lived on the Oldfield Estate in the 1950s,” said Derek. “I first met Alan at school in 1948, and we were both trainspotters at Ashchurch Station. I’m not certain, but I think he went to live in Portugal and had three daughters.” If anyone can help, please call Derek on 01684 297972. Derek is also interested in information about rail enthusiast H. B. Priestley. Derek has a number of his photographs dating from 1952-1962. Derek kindly loaned us an archive photograph of a steam train at Ashchurch in 1925 (above). Below is the same scene today.

Over forty framed photographs including a variety of scenic and art imagery will be on display. These feature steam and diesel taken at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, including guest locomotives and special events. Jack is excited about his first ever exhibition. “This is the first time I have exhibited my work and it will be interesting to see what reaction I will get from the public. I am always on the lookout for different angles, some of which will be on display at the exhibition.” Visitors are able to purchase framed photos by placing orders, cards and mounted prints will be available to take away on the day. The exhibition runs at the Flag and Whistle Tea Rooms at GWR’s Toddington station from 31st May until 31st July.

Whilst this is a term that is used quite widely in the banking industry, it has also been used in various other guises, including health and fitness. Whilst our interest rates are low in the banking sector at the moment, our development of our fitness and health needs to be maintained on a daily basis to achieve the maximum effect for the long term. Let me explain my point of view:- if we were to put away £3.00 a day (equivalent to 1 Mug of Cappuccino at a large chain coffee house) over a period of 40 years, we would have accumulated a compounded total of £41241.00 in interest alone at 3% and £85041.31 in the bank at the end of the day. So just think how much benefit you would receive if you were to increase your health and fitness by 3% per day. Every step we take towards this small amount of improvement can have a major benefit in the long term. The key is to ensure that your are taking each step in the right direction and being advised how to do this most effectively for the long game. However, the opposite can also be true as a negative effect in whatever form on a consistent daily basis will have

only a good thing. One thing to remember – ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING IT RIGHT, ITS ABOUT GETTING STARTED !! Till Next Time Take care and be healthy Lee Booth Perform Health and Fitness

Lee Booth an equivalent long term effect. Remember Cause and Effect, for every cause, you will have an effect, and the chain is compounded. So every positive cause like taking action to improve you health on a daily basis, will help your self confidence and eventually self esteem to grow, making you feel better every day. However, negative cause can also set of a similar chain of events and have you feeling sluggish, low and depressed. So put your energy into positive causes and you will be making a difference in your life. It might be a selfish thing, but it’s a positive selfish cause, and that’s

WILLING TO WORK FOR NOTHING! Capable Keith Barnett is so fed up with not having a job that he’s offering to work for nothing! Local man Keith, who has enough multi-level experience to turn his hand to anything, is advertising his services to potential employers on a ‘try before you buy’ basis.

BELINDA CAWTE (pictured above) has re-opened the popular Queensmead Stores in Bredon. Situated on the edge of the village with easy parking outside, the shop is a vital amenity for people living in this rural area. Belinda, who lives in Besford, formerly worked for BMW and is looking forward to her change of direction. Queensmead Stores will be selling a range of fresh fruit and vegetables, confectionery, groceries, newspapers and stamps.

Unpaid Job Opportunity Needed!!! Keith Barnett

Young, fit, flexible, fifty-ish and creative, dynamic and award winning professional, tired of being told he’s over-qualified or having his CV bundled with hundreds of others in the recruitment lottery, seeks an opportunity to prove his worth by initially working without payment to enable a potential employer to assess his abilities and/or contribution to their business before considering offering a position!

After joining the RAF at the age of 17, Keith has since worked all over the world - but is not necessarily seeking a high powered opportunity. He says he has even ‘dumbed down’ his cv as he is quite willing to work with his hands as well as in a more senior role. “Someone, somewhere might need someone reliable, intelligent and adaptable,” says Keith, whose approach is certainly to be applauded. If you’d like to give him a try, call 01684 772129.

• Experienced manufacturing manager, supervisor or operator. • Proven sales, marketing and presentation expertise. • Expert in circuit technology/SMT attachment optimisation/cost reduction. • Capable process improvement and/or quality improvement specialist. With unemployment figures at record levels and potential employers deluged with a sea of applications for any position required, it is genuinely hoped that someone will recognise this innovative approach where they can “Try” before they “Buy”! Like many, I love fast cars, fast bikes and speed; (in fact, I’ve made a living out of it), but NOT in a built up area! So, the entry requirements are comparatively simple: What you need is any car which has been lowered so far, it would make a reasonable snow-plough, with oversized wheels that have disappeared inside the wheel-arches. Next: an offensively loud exhaust, with a tailpipe large enough to resemble a section of the London Underground; the dimensions of which are inversely proportional to another appendage of a more personal nature. Then from the driver point of view: All you need is a complete disregard for speed limits, safety and common sense, plus a total lack of respect for other people – and there you have it! Now then, first practice starts at about 5.30 am for the keener members, as I’m awakened by things high revving and fast moving, unimpeded by traffic. Fast times through the ‘throttles’, as County Highways like to call them, can be posted for grid positions later. Traffic density through the ‘going to work / school run’ times, means practice is suspended until mid morning when ‘Team Commuter’ start posting their times in second

for all you ‘boy racers’; there’s a personal aspect to all of this. We’ve lost three cats out there on Northway Lane, two of them in the last twelve months and another badly hurt just last week – and I’ve seen many more corpses. You may say: ‘‘So what? It’s only a cat, or a dog’’, but those animals were someone’s companion and animals have no road sense, but then neither do small kids – and one day, YES, ONE DAY, it’s all going to go wrong; your luck and the luck of a small child, chasing a balloon, a ball, a bubble, is going to run out. It’ll be too late then – and this neighbourhood will have no sympathy for you. Anthony Stockman

In May 1922, Tewkesbury’s War Memorial was unveiled in a solemn ceremony. In the Great War the town had lost at least 153 men. The place of honour was given to Mrs L. Didcote for the sole reason that she had lost three of her sons in that conflict – the greatest loss to afflict one family. Standing by her is her grandson, Harry Didcote, who had lost his own father. He grew up with a passionate interest in history and only died recently. The Tewkesbury Register (now the Gloucestershire Echo) reported that Alderman Baker, Chairman of War Memorial Committee, had officially handed the Memorial over to the Mayor for the benefit of the town and its inhabitants. In his reply, the Mayor W. T. Boughton declared that "he gladly accepted the Memorial", culminating that: "the present corporation, and all succeeding corporations, would guard it with jealous care and see that nothing untoward happened to it". May 2012, therefore, will represent the 90th Anniversary of the town’s Memorial and, not surprisingly, it is in need of cleaning and minor repairs. The Council, which retired in 2011, had intended that the cleaning should have been completed by the time of this anniversary to allow for a re-dedication. Circumstances have conspired to delay this enterprise; it is to be fervently hoped that nothing will impede its completion before for the centenary of the outbreak of the War in August 2014.

HAPPY NAPPY MONDAY COMPETITION WINNER Babies and their carers attending last month’s Nappy Monday film at The Roses theatre were entered into a free prize draw to win a course of swimming lessons, writes Shelby Powell. The prize, sponsored by Fiona Munt Whittle of Aquatots, consists of one term of swimming lessons at Tewkesbury Park Hotel. Fiona said “I am really pleased to be able to support The Roses. I have enjoyed bringing my own family to the theatre over the years and this is my way of saying thank you for the excellent entertainment The Roses provides for young families”. The lucky winner was baby Roxanne, aged three months, pictured above. Mum Vivienne Gaskin commented “I was planning to arrange swimming lessons for my daughter and now it’s all sorted thanks to Aquatots”. Nappy Monday film showings are films exclusively for mums, dads and carers who are accompanied by children under 18 months old. TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 43
