Tetbury Men’s Shed What a joy it was to welcome so many people to the Goods Shed on… …Saturday the 12th of September for the presentation of the two new Talking Benches to the town. Talking Helps Tetbury and the Men’s Shed have teamed up to create these benches along the Tetbury Trail at the Goods Shed. South Cotswolds MP Roz Savage cut the ribbon on Tetbury’s first Talking Helps bench and praised the group’s work with Tetbury Men’s Shed to launch the initiative. Dr Savage said: “It’s inspiring to see people working together to take tragedy and use it to do something positive for their community, it reflects the wonderful community spirit that I have seen across the South Cotswolds in the last two years that I have been an MP.” So many people have helped to make this a place where someone can sit for a moment of reflection, share a conversation, or simply feel less alone. These benches will stand not only as a source of comfort for those who need it, but also as a lasting memorial to the people we have lost. A reminder that even in the hardest moments, our community stands together. These benches have a lovely touch of nostalgia about them, the kind of decorative scrollwork and bright colours you might have seen in a gentler era, when people had time to stop and chat. The mix of cheerful colours combined

with the smooth wooden slats give them a welcoming, old fashioned charm that really brightens the spaces. Our Community Workshop sits right next to the Goods Shed, and we love welcoming anyone who fancies being part of something fun and hands on. It’s a relaxed, friendly place to meet people, share a laugh, and make new friends while working on all sorts of projects. We’re open every Wednesday morning and all day Thursday, so feel free to drop in whenever you’re about. If you’d like to know more about the Tetbury Shed, you can give me a ring on 07955 088580 or join our Facebook group: “Tetbury Men’s Shed Workshop.” You’ll also find details about upcoming activities, and how to find us on our website: www.tetburymensshed.co.uk Alan Greenway TMS Workshop

. . . and from the allotment Due to a significant rise in flea beetles, a result of the intense heat of the summer, there have been some rumours nationally that sprouts may be in short supply for the traditional Christmas dinner this year. Fear not Tetbury people, the plants on our allotment, which have been watered at frequent intervals, are looking to produce some very healthy sprouts. In among our extensive range of traditional vegetables, we enjoyed a great deal of success with Patty Pans, a small round variety of summer squash with scalloped edges. These will feature next season; seed catalogues are already being consulted. Like our crops, the allotment group has been boosted with new members adding to our skills base and of course our biscuit box. All are welcome to visit us on the allotment in Herd Lane each Wednesday morning from 10.00 am to noon. Or you can follow us on Facebook. Ken White TMS Allotment

the Dolphins Hall management to find a solution to secure free access in order that we may continue to provide support for this popular event. We will provide more details in next month’s issue. The 200 club winner of the £100 prize for September was R Latter.

Making a Local Difference As we settle into a busy autumn season in Tetbury, the Lions Club continues to remain deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our local community. Every single copy of the Advertiser you read, and every advertisement placed by our local businesses, directly fuel the Tetbury Lions Trust, allowing us to funnel crucial financial support right back into vital local causes. We were proud and delighted to attend the Dazzle Showgirls presentation evening on the 10th of September where the funds raised in their fantastic cabaret show night in June were being distributed to three worthy charities. Due to the support of the local community, we had been able to provide £2,000 to help fund the show’s expenses thereby directly contributing to the amount available to these charities. From our members who attended the show itself all agreed it was an energetic and thoroughly entertaining evening and credit must go to all the Showgirls’ hard work, where thousands of hours of volunteer work raised the standard to a professional level of production.

Beyond this, we have also recently donated £800 to the Severn Freewheelers in order to support their essential, voluntary emergency service delivering blood and urgent medical supplies.

Early one Saturday in September, a group of Tetbury Lions and local citizens enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing cruise on board the Kennetavon Adventurer barge along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Setting off from Devizes Wharf, we travelled through the historic locks before turning around at the top of the famous Caen Hill flight of twenty nine locks, which offered spectacular views across the Wiltshire countryside. With perfect weather to enjoy a drink on board and a lovely coffee stop at the Flight Cafe, it was a fantastic day out thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Also £300 to the Food Bank which will help ensure vulnerable families in our immediate area continue to receive critical emergency provision. £260 to the Tetbury Goods Shed to fund the painting and lighting of the landmark railway carriage to enable it to be more accessible for meetings and pop-up events. £250 to the Junior Parkrun to assist in setting up this health and fitness initiative for our local youth. £250 to 2wish to support their invaluable child bereavement support services. Each November the Tetbury Lions proudly provide a complimentary transport service to bring our local elderly residents to the Dolphins Hall for the pantomime dress rehearsal. There has been a change to the parking arrangements outside the venue which may potentially incur parking charges. We are actively working with

Upcoming Events Looking ahead, we have an exciting lineup of social and fundraising activities designed to bring the community together. Bucket Shakes at Tesco Scheduled across both October and December. Please look out for our collectors. The Big Quiz Night Join us on Friday the 27th of November at the Great Tythe Barn for a fantastic evening of trivia and friendly competition. Annual Christmas Raffle Ticket sales will officially commence on 1st December, featuring brilliant prizes sourced from local businesses. Tetbury Lions Dinner Dance Our wonderful annual dinner dance is being held on the 23rd October at the Great Tythe Barn. There will be a threecourse dinner, prosecco on arrival and monetary raffle prizes. Dancing to the Saga Louts band performing a selection of 60s, 70s and 80s music. All donations to Tetbury Hospital and local charities. For more details on the above events please contact Tetbury Lions President Maggie Heaven on 07747 608990

Beauty Corner How to Get Your Skin Ready for a Big Event Whether it’s a wedding, a milestone birthday, or simply a day when you want to look and feel your very best, the truth about great skin is simple: it’s far less about one miracle treatment and much more about starting early, making the right choices and giving your skin time to respond. Fortunately, that really takes a lot of the pressure off. If there’s one thing I would say after years of working with skin, it’s this: please don’t suddenly throw everything at your face two weeks before an important event. More is definitely not always more when it comes to skin.

Why four to six months matters This is the ideal point to think about what you actually want to improve. Skin doesn’t change overnight. Generally speaking, it takes around six weeks for newly formed skin cells to move from the deeper layers of the skin up towards the surface. When I’m planning skin for an important event, I ideally want to allow around three of those cycles. That is why four to six months is such a useful window. It gives the skin time to renew several times, while also allowing

treatments and home care to be introduced gradually rather than everything being rushed at the last minute. I really do understand why people feel confused. There are SO many options now: LED light therapy, Hydra Facials, chemical peels, microneedling, radio-frequency, microcurrent, HIFU, and of course a huge world of skincare products promising brighter, smoother, firmer skin.

much the same. Consistency is where the real improvement tends to happen.

The final month Once you reach the last few weeks, the focus should change. If your skin is doing well, keep doing what you are doing. This is not the time to introduce five new products, try the strongest peel you can find, or book something completely unfamiliar.

They all do different things, and the treatment everyone is talking about is not necessarily the treatment your skin needs. Age, sensitivity, pigmentation, lifestyle, current skincare, medical history and acceptable downtime can all affect what is suitable. This is where a proper consultation with an experienced skin professional can save a lot of guesswork.

At this stage, the aim is to keep skin calm, healthy and looking its best. Around a week before, a gentle brightening or hydrating treatment can work well, as long as it is appropriate for your skin.

If firmness is the goal

So, if you have a wedding, birthday or special event coming up, don’t wait until the final few weeks to start thinking about your skin.

Treatments such as HIFU are a good example of why timing matters. The result develops gradually, so it is often planned around twelve weeks before an event rather than squeezed in at the end. HIFU is also a little different to many other treatments because it is only required once a year. Other treatments may work best as a course to begin with, followed by maintenance, depending on the individual. I always compare it with getting fit. One trip to the gym three days before the wedding is unlikely to transform anything! Skin is

2013

Please don’t forget home care. A consistent routine, sensible sun protection and avoiding last-minute experiments will usually serve you far better than panic.

Start early. Get the right advice. Have a plan. Then give your skin the one thing no lastminute treatment can replace: time. When the big day arrives, you don’t want to be worrying about your skin. You want to be enjoying it. Michelle Stead Advanced Skin Specialist

Tales from Tetbury The Olympian After he won his medal they painted the pillar box gold, and he got to turn on the Christmas lights. There had been an opentop bus ride through the university town where he had trained. He’d even appeared on Points West, between an item on flytipping near Swindon and a man from Bristol who’d grown a large pumpkin. He’d competed for another couple of years until an Achilles weakness forced him into retirement and the IT job the Athletic Association had secured for him. There were dogs in the park, snuffling about, racing, chasing or bumbling along as befitted their breed. He noticed particularly a young woman with a couple of greyhounds on leads; she was fleshy and tattooed with lurid hair, the dogs sleek, delicate in their gait, heads held low, their expressions mild. She slipped the lead; they looked up at her then stretched off at speed across the grass, jostling joyfully before peeing in unison against the fence of the tennis court. He walked towards the Vicarage Road

gate, feeling the gradient rise, and the redundant instinct within him to shorten stride and push hard, driving with the elbows up and over the crest. Such muscle memories were a nagging reminder of his physical pomp. A sudden burst of chatter and movement at the gate arrested his selfpity. A joyful swarm of children ineffectually restrained by adult voices cascaded down the slope towards him, flowing either side of him onto the mown grass. The teachers regained control lining the children up on the grass in two groups about eighty yards apart. Six children at the far end assumed the on-your-marks posture and at a shout

from the teacher sprinted along the grass. A girl with a swinging ponytail and a bristlehaired boy pulled away from the rest; the boy was strong, stocky with a powerful rolling gate; the girl was all economy and regularity, even strides, upper body still, head high, arms rhythmic pistons of juvenile determination. At half-way the boy’s explosive strength had pushed him into the lead, but he was rocking, a rictus of effort tensing his face; the girl stared straight ahead, eyes on the tape, her smooth coordination unchanging as she drew inexorably ahead to win by five yards. The children cheered, the defeated boy had the grace to shake the winner’s hand. He too was applauding. The spirit and vigour of natural competition shown by the boy and girl had moved him. His medals were tarnished; the flaking gloss of celebrity and bodily decline had soured the memories of his own juvenile athleticism. This was how it started for him: school sports days on that grass track at Ashton Court, the power in his legs, the will to win, the drive to improve; the children had helped him clear away the dross to feel again the defining essence of his life. Optimum Mobility

Genuine advice and best value from the local specialist

Despite the weeks of dry weather and excessive heat that we experienced throughout the summer, we were once again really pleased to see how many of the shrubs at least had actually managed to survive their ordeal. Unfortunately, a lot of the smaller perennials at the front of the beds didn’t do very well at all. Having taken cuttings earlier in the season, and brought them on, our plan now is to add these new plants into the beds during the next few weeks in the hope that they will get established and do better next year.

* Wheelchairs, manual and powered * Scooters and portable scooters * Powered rise/recline armchairs * Household, bathroom and walking aids * Large display with private test area * Disabled facilities, easy parking * Proper maintenance * Part exchange, new & reconditioned * Adaptations

By now, it is quite possible that the hanging baskets we supplied to residents and traders in June, as our fundraising initiative, will be starting to get past their best. I’ll soon be contacting everyone who supported us, to arrange collection of the empty containers when ready. There is no rush, just as and when you have finished with them. We will then be able to wash and disinfect the containers ready for use again next year. If yours have already finished, and are ready for collection now, please ring me on 504213 or email me on sue@tetburyinbloom.org.uk so we can arrange a suitable time to pick them up or for you to deliver them back to me, if you live outside Tetbury. If you’d like to order our baskets for next summer, please look out for our advert in the February 2027 edition of the Tetbury Advertiser. However, you can reserve yours now if you wish. Just get in touch with me on the contact details above stating which type (either trailing begonias or trailing geraniums) and how many you wish to order. I will then confirm the price and delivery/collection details in the New Year. Sue Hirst, Team Leader, Tetbury in Bloom

Shots from a Lawyer’s Gun

Reserved and Regulated The majority of legal firms will hold client accounts and Professional Indemnity insurance. In my father’s and grandfather’s day we all paid our premiums into the Solicitor’s Indemnity Fund and that was that, but at the turn of the century the market was opened up and several companies and brokers besieged us with requests to quote and many just wasted our time. The larger firms will have better bargaining power because they can afford the higher premiums. I have been classed as a sole practitioner despite the fact that at one point I was employing ten solicitors, and sole practitioners were reckoned to be a major risk. I was paying in the region of £20,000 per annum which represented about 10% of my turnover. Dealing with house purchases was deemed to be a top risk. There were periods of difficulty, but claims were happily few and far between

although some of the most punishing claims over the last fifty years have been made against litigators who went on to act for insurance companies and took on very responsible positions. One does not hear about the claims usually until ten years after the event and when you hand the matters over to insurance companies the usual refrain is that you ought to settle the claim because of the threat of having massive costs inflicted on you. Quite often you are dealing with litigators over conveyancing claims that are not familiar with house buying procedure. It is usual for any act of negligence to be discovered when the buyer becomes the seller. As a result of a claim resulting from a 2015 purchase, our premium for 2025 rose from £20,000 per annum to £50,000 per annum which was unsustainable.

Solicitors need professional indemnity insurance only when carrying out work reserved under section 12 of the Legal Services Act 2007. The six reserved legal activities are: 1. The right to appear before and address a Court. 2. The conduct of litigation 3. The right to prepare an instrument of transfer for the Land Registry or lodge a document at the Land Registry 4. Probate activities including proceedings to oppose a grant. 5. Notarial activities 6. Administration of oaths A lot of work falls outside the regulatory framework of the Legal Services Act including the drafting of a will or power of attorney. An uninsured unregulated lawyer can provide representation in connection with any matter concerning the application of the law or any form of resolution of legal disputes. The main instruction from the Solicitors Regulation Authority is that unregulated firms should say that they are not regulated. Even if you are not regulated, you can continue to administer estates after Probate has been granted but if you complete the inheritance and tax forms you can be classed as a tax advisor and be brought into the scope of the Money Laundering Regulations. It is a tricky path to navigate but a relief from being regulated.

The History of Tetbury Society At our September meeting Liz Davenport treated us to a well illustrated, fascinating talk about the visit William Leigh, junior, made to the Antipodes in 1852-4 and its impact on Woodchester. William Leigh, senior, came from Staffordshire. He was not a particularly rich man, but at a sale in London in 1830 land was available for £1 an acre in South Australia, the only state not a penal colony. A purchase of more than four thousand acres gave the buyer the right to use it as he wished; he bought four thousand five hundred acres and set up an English community there. He converted to Roman Catholicism in the 1840s, bought Woodchester Estate and started to build a mansion, set up a Catholic community and build Woodchester Abbey. In Australia he had rented out his land and used the money to build schools and churches

and buy shares in the Burra-Burra Copper Mine. He was now short of money. His only son was in poor health. A trip to Australia along with Edward Peake, the land agent, would do Willie good and he could sell the Australian holdings.

They set off in June 1852 in a cargo ship carrying a few paying passengers. Life on board was tedious with poor service and food and little entertainment, so Willie spent the time sketching. When a fire broke out the passengers were put in a small boat and towed along behind while the crew put it out. Safely back on board, Adelaide was reached in early 1853. Once the land was sold, they explored. Willie’s very detailed sketches illustrated their travels. First, they went around the coast from Adelaide to Brisbane and then across to New Zealand. South Island was explored, but there was only Wellington to see in North Island. Back in Australia they had lots of local trips, some inland but mostly by sea. On one they went to Melbourne and were shipwrecked on the way back to Adelaide. It was foggy and the captain could only see one of the two lighthouses marking the straits into Adelaide and the ship ran aground on rocks. The area was uninhabited, so they had to find shelter, food and water, while some went for help, which took a week. By February 1854 they were on their way home via Cape Town when there was another ship wreck, but this time they only waited overnight for rescue. They did eventually get home and, surprisingly, Willie’s health was much improved. The money raised from the land sale after tax was £14,000 and was to be for the completion of Woodchester Mansion. Maintenance of existing land and property used much of the money, nothing was spent on the mansion and costs were ‘trimmed’ on completing Woodchester chapel. William Leigh ran out of money in 1857 and when he died the mansion was still unfinished. Our next meeting on the 1st of October will be in Christ Church at 7.30 pm, when Ian MacIntosh will talk about ‘400 years of Stroudwater Textiles’. Tetbury WI Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to…… well, not Bangor, Bradford on Avon, and while we didn’t stop for lunch on the way and it did cost a little more than a pound you know, it was a beautiful day (my apologies to Fiddler’s Dram!). Our August outing was a great trip on the ‘Barbara McLellan’ from Bradford on Avon quay cruising slowly along the Kennet and Avon Canal through the lock to the Avoncliff Aqueduct and back. A cream tea was included with scones baked by several of our members, jam and some seriously good, clotted cream. The staff on the narrow boat were great, providing both tea, coffee and the occasional glass of Prosecco as well as an interesting commentary on the canal and the sights along the way. And we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Despite a slightly overcast sky as we left Tetbury, the sun had come out by the time we reached Bradford on Avon so many of us were able to disembark at the aqueduct and walk across to enjoy the view and wave at those who stayed on board as the crew turned the boat around for our return trip. In a complete contrast, the speaker at our

September meeting was author Barry Faulkner with his talk on ‘The major heists and the geezers what done ‘em’. As the only member of a London family that didn’t take to a life of crime thanks to his mother’s aspirations for him, nevertheless as a child he was witness to some of the London underworld after WW2, where the likes of the Krays flourished and crime was ‘organised’ almost on an industrial scale.

Now that Autumn is arriving fast, although the trees in my garden seem to have temporarily stopped shedding leaves, we are back to our usual monthly pattern. We will be having a small harvest supper at our October meeting on Monday the 12th, following a talk by Ali Warren on the history of bread. We’ve also asked members to contribute items for the local food bank in the spirit of harvest festival. The next coffee morning at The Snooty Fox will be on Monday the 26th of October at 10.30 am. Other activities are flourishing too: the third ‘Wine and Waffle’ evening was held at the beginning of September, the Craft Group has re-started after a summer break, and a second book club had its first meeting. The Garden Group went to Westbury Court Gardens, and I should be able to include a report in the next issue on a trip to Kelmscott Manor that is planned late in September. And so is membership. We’re thrilled at the number of new members who have decided to join us. As a committee, we are determined to provide a varied programme of speakers, events and groups to address as wide a spectrum of interests as we can and provide an environment that is both welcoming and relaxed – but you won’t know until you try us! Humanism What is Humanism? Humanism is a non-religious approach to life based on reason, compassion, human dignity and a belief in our ability to make a positive difference in the world. Humanists do not believe in a god or gods, or in an afterlife. Instead, Humanism starts from the understanding that this is the life we have, and that it is therefore worth living well: finding meaning in what we love, supporting other people, caring for the natural world and making the most of the one life we know we have. Of course, nobody can know for certain what happens after death. But Humanism encourages people to focus on the life we can experience and influence. There is plenty of wonder to be found in the world around us — a world that has evolved naturally over billions of years — and everyone has the capacity for morality, kindness and compassion without needing religious belief to provide it. Humanists UK describes Humanism as a worldview based on reason and humanity. In simple terms, Humanists are sometimes described as being “good without God”.

Humanism is not simply atheism, though. It is a positive ethical and philosophical outlook: an approach to living that asks how people can create meaningful lives and contribute to a better society without relying on religious belief. Humanism is also not anti-religious. Humanists and religious people can — and do — share many of the same values, including kindness, community, love, hope, compassion and a desire to help others. People with very different beliefs can work together to strengthen their local communities and support one another. Humanism can be particularly relevant at important moments in life. Humanist celebrants conduct non-religious weddings, funerals and other ceremonies, creating meaningful occasions that reflect the people involved rather than following a religious tradition. These ceremonies can still include readings, music, symbolism, reflection and opportunities for family and friends to come together. Some people identify strongly as Humanists; others may simply hold many Humanist values without using the label at all. There is no requirement to have everything worked out or to belong to a particular community. For some, however, discovering Humanism can provide a real sense of belonging — the comfort of

finding that other people share their way of looking at the world. For anyone curious, Humanists UK has a “How Humanist Are You?” quiz, which can be a light-hearted way of exploring Humanist ideas. The results may reveal more common ground with religious and non-religious people than expected.

At a time when kindness, understanding and tolerance are so important, Humanism offers one way of thinking about how people can live well together — regardless of whether their values are rooted in religious faith, Humanist philosophy or something else entirely. Humanism is here in the local community, too. It is a community for people who are non-religious, as well as anyone who is curious about Humanist ideas and the possibility of finding meaning, morality and connection without religion. And we’re off! We are delighted to be back at school after a lovely summer break. Pupils have settled in well to their new year groups and routines. Learning is well underway in all classes with our brand-new reception pupils learning all about each other in their term topic ‘all about me’. The Kestrels (y1/2) are focusing on the local history of Avening and ‘seasons’ in their science work, while the Hawks class (y3/4) are travelling back in time to the Stone Age for their history topic, with a geographical focus on earthquakes and volcanoes later on in the term. The Owls class (y5/6), meanwhile, are focusing on the local area through time.

As ever, enrichment plays a significant part of our curriculum at Avening School, recognised in our recent Ofsted for which we received a glowing report and a ‘Strong’ for Personal Development and Wellbeing. This term, children will be able to choose from a wide variety of after school clubs with art and music on offer to the younger pupils and for KS2, we offer sport, Young Voices, puzzle/board games and STEM club. We are also fortunate to have Mr John Hall from Avening Brass Band who runs Brass Band club free of charge. In addition to after school clubs, pupils can learn to play a musical instrument with violin, cello, piano, clarinet, bassoon, recorder and

Tetbury Bowls Club We are coming to the end of a very busy and successful season… …here at Tetbury Bowls Club. Both men’s and ladies’ teams have given good showings of themselves with our new ladies settling particularly well into their league roles. We have seen some cracking club competition finals, particularly Martin and Roger in the novices, well done to Roger and to all winners. Two of our older juniors, Phoebe and Jack, decided to celebrate their friendly rivalry by playing the first Hodges/Garland Rivalry Cup, won this year by Jack, and our juniors held their own closing gala and buffet to end their season. Our Corporate Day was much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Teams of four non bowlers from local businesses, including our sponsors Upton Mill Care Home and Specsavers, were given twenty minutes training before playing each other in a bowls league. We stopped half way for an afternoon cream tea and the eventual winners of the big hamper were team Oddballs with TAYCT coming second & going home with mini-Proseccos. Everyone said it wasn’t as easy as it looks but was great fun. All rose brilliantly to the challenge and we hope to see some of you again.

Our last couple of friendlies and our Closing Gala are almost here but that’s not the end of things for us. At the beginning of October Tetbury Bowls Club is going on tour to Portugal. We have four games of bowls booked in but plenty of time to explore, relax and hopefully enjoy some late season sun. When we come back we’re into winter season Friday night socials,

starting with bingo on the 2nd of October and a quiz on the 16th of October. In looking through photographs for this article I find I’m really spoilt for choice. If you’d like to see more or keep up with what’s going on that the club, why not check out our Facebook page or our website? Tetbury Bowls Club

Following our successful hosting in July of the American Cyclists on tour we will be repeating the event twice more in the next month, great to be introducing lawn bowls across the globe! Our new jackets arrived and were handed out by Alison and representatives from sponsors Upton Mill, who then stayed to watch the following match with a drink from the bar. Timing was perfect as the weather changed & new jackets and gilets were worn for the first time.

and to the Feoffees for their support with funding the project. The children have also been doing some serious bug hunting under the logs and tyres and have drawn some lovely group pictures together on long pieces of paper stretched along the little wall. Inside we have had music week, the children have been playing percussion instruments, drawing pictures to represent their favourite songs for us to put together in a song book and choosing songs to sing from props in our song bag. Dolls and dolls prams have also been popular, bathing the ‘babies’ and taking them for walks in their prams. We are on the look out for more baby dolls and dolls prams/pushchairs if anyone has any they’re able to donate. Last month we received a super donation of Playmobil vehicles including helicopters, trucks, refuse lorries etc. A big thank you to Ann Platts for letting us have them. As Autumn emerges we’ll be talking about the changes of the new season, continuing to bring the natural world into the children’s learning. If anyone is out walking and finds some autumn ‘treasures’ the children might like, or if anyone has an excess of pumpkins, sunflower heads, pinecones or conkers in their garden or allotment, we’d be very grateful here, and the children will love them, so please drop them in. Next

month we’ll be helping the children learn through stories, songs, rhymes, play and craft, about Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and Diwali. A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly Sixteen-year-old Mattie Gokey lives in the north of New York State at the turn of the 20th Century. She works hard on the family farm, looking after her younger sisters, caring for the dairy herd, tending their crops and managing her widowed father. But in her head she is planning her escape to New York City and college, where she dreams of becoming a writer. The harsh reality of life, however, is that she does not have the money for college, her father would never allow her to go off on her own and – perhaps most importantly – she promised her dying mother that she would stay and look after the family.

0201026

She has two allies: Weaver, who has already secured his place at college and Miss Wilcox her teacher. But then there is Royal, the most handsome boy in town who has started paying attention to her. When Royal is nearby, all thoughts of college and writing disappear.

Mattie does manage to leave home, but only as far as the lakeside hotel where she gets summer work. When one of the guests asks Mattie to dispose of some letters for her it seems like a strange, but not difficult request. However, when the young woman drowns and Mattie starts to read the letters, she begins to worry that all was not as it seemed. Although jumping backwards and forwards in time is a little confusing at first, this novel is a slow build that grabs you in the end. A snapshot of life when a woman’s lot was in the home and raising children, when medical care was rudimentary and opportunities almost non-existent. It is even more poignant as we understand Mattie’s longing for books and a future not acceptable to society. Will family, duty and hormones win out over ambition? How will the drowned girl’s story affect Mattie’s decision? Read on.

Introducing Bespoke Building Contractors to Tetbury Award-winning building contractors with a passion for quality, craftsmanship and character, we are delighted to introduce Bespoke Building Contractors to the Tetbury community.

Although we are new to Tetbury, we are certainly not new to the building industry. Our business was established in September 2009, originally based in Bristol, where we built our reputation through a commitment to quality workmanship, attention to detail and, above all, putting our clients at the heart of every project.

and more contemporary residences. It is exactly the kind of environment in which we enjoy working. We are now proud to have our office on Church Street, right in the heart of Tetbury, making us a genuinely local presence in the town. If you are passing by, please come in and say hello. We would be delighted to meet local residents, businesses and anyone who is considering a building project. Even if you are only at the very early stages of an idea, we are always happy to have a chat and share our experience. Our move to the area means that we are now able to bring our experience and expertise closer to homeowners throughout Tetbury, the Cotswolds, South Gloucestershire, Bath and the surrounding areas.

Building with character

One of the areas we have become particularly passionate about is working with older and historic properties.

A period property or traditional building can present very different challenges from a modern house. Understanding how an existing building was constructed is often just as important as understanding how to alter it.

At the heart of the business is Daniel Arathoon, who was born and raised in Bristol and has spent 25 years working in the construction industry. Daniel lives locally with his wife and their three children, and moving the business to Tetbury represents an exciting new chapter for both the company and the family. “Having spent so many years working in and around Bristol, we are really excited to have made the move to Tetbury and become part of the local community,” says Daniel. “We love the character of the area and the wonderful buildings that surround us, and we are looking forward to bringing our experience to local homeowners.”

Whether it is a traditional stone property, an old farm building or a listed building, we believe alterations should respect the character of the original structure while allowing the property to work for modern life. This can mean using traditional materials and techniques, carefully matching existing stonework or masonry, retaining original features or finding sympathetic ways of introducing modern insulation, heating, services and technology. For us, it is about finding the right balance between preserving character and creating a home that works beautifully for the people living in it.

Barn conversions and bespoke homes

new-build homes, extensions and major renovations. Whatever the project, our approach remains the same: understand what the client wants to achieve, consider the building carefully and then deliver the work to a high standard.

More than just the build

We understand that starting a building project can be a daunting prospect. There are often questions about planning, costs, design, Building Regulations, structural requirements, materials and timescales — and sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. This is where we believe our experience can add real value. We are happy to become involved at an early stage, even when a project is still just an idea. We can discuss your proposals, provide an initial view on feasibility and help identify potential practical, planning and conservation considerations before significant time and money is spent developing the project. Where planning permission, listed building consent or specialist advice is required, we can also help coordinate the appropriate professional team, working alongside architects, planning consultants, structural engineers and conservation specialists. Our aim is to make the process as straightforward and well considered as possible from the outset.

Quality is in the detail

We chose the name Bespoke Building Contractors because it reflects the way we approach our work.

A new chapter in Tetbury

Barn conversions have also become an important part of our work.

The Cotswolds has always been an area we have admired for its beautiful architecture, traditional buildings and strong sense of place. Tetbury, in particular, has a unique character, with a wonderful mixture of historic properties, period homes, traditional stone buildings

There is something particularly rewarding about taking an existing agricultural building and giving it a new lease of life. The challenge is to retain what makes the building special while transforming it into a comfortable and practical home.

We don’t believe there is a one-size-fitsall solution to building. The best projects are those where the details have been carefully considered — from the overall design and construction methods through to the materials, finishes and small details that can make such a difference to the finished home.

Every barn is different, which is why we take a bespoke approach to every project. We also undertake bespoke

tradespeople and other local businesses. We hope to build the same reputation here that we have worked hard to establish over the years in Bristol — one based on quality, trust, craftsmanship and lasting relationships. So, if you’re walking along Church Street and see the Bespoke Building Contractors office, pop your head in and say hello. You don’t need to have architectural drawings or a fully formed project. You might simply have an idea you’re wondering whether is possible. We’re always happy to talk.

work that ultimately carries our name. Our experience has taught us that good building is about much more than putting materials together. It is about understanding the building, communicating properly with the client and taking pride in the finished result.

Whether you’re considering a new home, extension, renovation, barn conversion or alterations to a period or listed property, we can offer an initial conversation and, where appropriate, help assess the feasibility of your ideas and guide you towards the right next steps.

A local company with a wealth of experience

Although our business is new to the Tetbury area, we bring with us 25 years of personal experience in the construction industry and more than 15 years of running our own building company.

Since establishing Bespoke Building Contractors in September 2009, we have built our reputation through recommendations, repeat clients and a commitment to doing things properly. We are proud to have received multiple industry awards for our work, but we remain a hands-on building company with a personal approach. For Daniel, the personal side of the business is just as important as the construction itself. “Building or renovating a home is a big undertaking for most people. It is important that clients feel they can pick up the phone, ask questions and get honest advice. We want our clients to feel that their project is in safe hands from the very beginning.”

Looking forward to becoming part of the community

Moving to Tetbury is about more than simply moving our business to a new location.

For Daniel and his family, Tetbury is now home, and having the business based in the centre of town gives Bespoke the opportunity to become part of the community, get to know our neighbours and build new relationships with homeowners, architects, designers,

Women’s Health Should menopause change how you exercise? “Am I too old for this?” “Why does exercise suddenly feel harder?” “Should I be doing less now I’m going through menopause?” If you’ve found yourself asking any of these questions, you’re definitely not alone. The good news is that menopause doesn’t mean you need to stop exercising. In fact, staying active can be a really positive part of looking after yourself during this stage of life. However, it might mean it’s time to think a little differently about how you exercise. Many women tell me that the things they’ve happily done for years suddenly don’t feel quite the same. Perhaps you’re leaking when you run or jump. Maybe you feel heavier or uncomfortable during exercise. You might be experiencing aches and pains or finding that your usual workout leaves you feeling more exhausted than energised. This is often where women

make the mistake of thinking: “Well, I suppose this is just what happens as I get older.” Not necessarily. Your body is changing, and it’s perfectly reasonable that your approach to exercise might need to change with it. That doesn’t mean wrapping yourself in cotton wool

and giving up the things you enjoy! It means paying attention to what your body is telling you and finding ways to exercise that feel good, manageable and sustainable. For example, you might need to adjust the intensity, impact, frequency or type of exercise you’re doing. You might need to build strength more deliberately, allow yourself more recovery time, or address symptoms such as bladder leakage or pelvic heaviness rather than simply putting up with them. Please don’t think you have to choose between ‘carry on and put up with it’ and ‘stop exercising’; there is a whole middle ground. Sometimes the answer is simply changing how you exercise while you work on the underlying problem. So, if you love running, lifting weights, walking, classes, tennis or anything else that gets you moving, you don’t automatically need to give it up because you’re going through menopause. You may just need a different plan and a pelvic health physio can support you in making that plan.

Tetbury Probus a modified balloon; this flew a few miles but on landing was blown into nearby trees and was destroyed. Despite severe criticism and negative press reports, Zeppelin was undaunted and proceeded to build another airship with much better control. His third balloon managed an eight-hour flight and covered some two hundred miles. This inspired the German Government to consider the potential for airships and as a result, generous funds for further development were made available. Rapid progress followed, with larger and steerable airships which were easier to control. By 1909 airships had caught the public imagination and became a tourist attraction and a much sought after way of enjoying a holiday. Following major technical developments and an impressive safety record, over one thousand six hundred commercial flights were achieved carrying thirty-four thousand passengers. Was this the world’s first commercial airline?

Zeppelins Members enjoyed a fascinating talk about the history of Airships called Zeppelins. In 1863 during the American Civil War a German called Graf von Zeppelin was in America and noticed large balloons floating in the sky, this inspired him to consider their use as a means of flight and for aerial reconnaissance. Zeppelin was an ambitious and determined individual who could foresee the use of large steerable balloons for military purposes. In 1899 Graf von Zeppelin’s first steerable air ‘sausage shaped’ balloon was made. This had a rigid metal skeleton containing

many Hydrogen filled gas bags made from *Goldbeater’s Skin (* the dried outer membrane of cattle intestines) and was fitted with engines, and rudders for steering to enable better control and to fly greater distances. A gondola for the crew and passengers was slung beneath the balloon, though later luxury passenger accommodation was constructed along its base inside the balloon!

In 1914 at the start of the First World War the German government realised the potential of Zeppelins for military purposes and started to use them as weapons of war by flying Zeppelins over London to drop bombs. This initially was successful but it was soon realised that the balloons were easy targets and could be shot down from the air by fighter pilots using incendiary bullets or by ground based anti-aircraft guns.

On its maiden flight the first airship flew a distance of nearly four miles but control of the balloon proved to be difficult, so with the aid of a design engineer Zeppelin built

After the war, the use of Zeppelins for commercial purposes rapidly developed although Zeppelin, who died in 1917, never saw his dream of commercialisation of balloon flight being realised.

Rapid development in the UK and USA saw long distance luxury balloons built with passenger cabins, restaurants with fine dining and every luxury possible for the passengers. These flights crossed the Atlantic and became very popular but could only be afforded by the rich. Many of these airships could carry over 70 passengers and had a crew of 40 and a range of 10,000 miles! A major change in development was the use of non-flammable Helium gas rather than Hydrogen which was highly flammable. Sadly, the remarkable development of luxury holidays of this type was shattered when on the 6th of May 1937 a giant airship, called the Hindenburg, crashed after crossing the Atlantic and caught fire. There were many fatalities among the crew and the passengers and this proved to be the end of long-distance luxury balloon flights. But Zeppelin’s dream is still alive today and there are short distance holiday flights in some parts of the world, particularly over Lake Constance in Germany. The excellent museum in Meersberg on the Northern Shore of Lake Constance which narrates the history of airships is well worth visiting.

News from St Marys’ Church

the Lake District, walking and luxuriating in the glorious lakes and fells. For me there is nothing quite like being on top of a mountain to give thanks for God’s creation.

Reflections on a sabbatical Last month I returned to ministry from a three-month sabbatical, a time of reflection (connecting how my life experiences connect with my faith), refreshment, restoration and healing – and what a summer it was! How blessed was I to be able to don shorts and t-shirts rather than heavy cassocks and chasubles (i.e. clergy wear!) in all that heat. So how did I spend my time? Well, it was particularly good to spend cherished time with my family and close friends; gathering people around a table for a meal is one of my favourite things and there was plenty of opportunity for that, particularly on holiday in France with twelve members of my family. Peter and I were also blessed to have a week away in

At home I thought there would be much work to do in our garden; in fact, it was mostly too hot to be out so I was forced into the shade, to sit and be still, listen to the birds with my Merlin App, read and watch the grass slowly turn from lush green to arid brown. One night it was warm enough to sit out under the stars and watch the Perseids meteor shower – what a show from the heavens that was! God has amazing ways and means of slowing us down and reflecting on the beauty of the created world. Music, to me, is an important part of God’s creation so I made time for some concertgoing – twelve concerts in fifteen weeks in fact! This included several performances and services at the Three Choirs Festival, this year held in Gloucester Cathedral. I find music a real source of healing, and I was able to spend time on the 1st of August, on the tenth anniversary of my mother’s death, at a performance of Elgar’s moving Dream of Gerontius, reflecting on her life, of my unending love for her and, through my tears, rejoicing in her memory,

If you have lost a loved one and would like their name to read out in memory, do please contact our administrator, Nikki Ind on 07386 953672. Those who have died in the last three years will automatically be on the list. There will be opportunities for reflection (musical or otherwise) for us all this month with various events coming up at St Marys’. Music will feature large as the Tetbury Music Festival returns with concerts in our beautiful church with its amazing acoustic much loved by Radio 3. The concerts in church run from the 1st to the 4th of October. This year we will also have a fully sung Choral Eucharist on the morning of Sunday the 4th of October at 10.00 am with the St Cecilia Singers. Finally, there will be a Reflect Breakfast for Women held in the hall of Christ Church, Tetbury on Saturday the 11th of October from 9.30 am to 11.00 am. It’s a great opportunity to get together for a chat, enjoy a super breakfast and hear someone reflecting on their faith journey. Please let Michèle Maund know if you would like to attend – all welcome – suggested donation of £5 to cover costs. micheleamaund@ gmail.com Try and take some time out to reflect on how God might be working through your daily experiences. Avening WI Avening WI has been planning lots of events over the next few months… …including workshops where we will be making bags for hospital patients’ possessions and for syringe drivers and another where we will learn how to weave on a loom. We will be walking the meadows around Malmesbury. At our October meeting we will be celebrating our 96th birthday with a harvest supper and quiz. We are hosting another quiz on Friday the 6th of November at the Avening Social Club which is open to all. So, get together a team of four and come along at 7.00 pm for a fun evening which will include a ploughman’s supper. On the hottest day of the summer a group of members gathered for our summer social where we were entertained by Frances Fry a very talented West End musical theatre actor and singer. Her West End credits include The Sound of Music, Oliver, and Les Miserables where she played Cosette. She talked about her life in the theatre and sang us songs from the shows and we were able to sing along with her.

At our September meeting one of our members, Cas, showed us a film that was made by a young Irish cancer patient. It was about the achievements of Cas’s father, Denis Burkitt, who was a surgeon who in the 1950’s was drawn to work in equatorial Africa. In Uganda, where he and his family settled for many years, he found that many young African children were suffering from fatal facial tumours. He endeavoured to find out the cause and spread of these unusual tumours and to develop a cure. As a result of his research this cancer was named after

him and is known as Burkitt’s Lymphoma. A cure was found and now 90% of sufferers survive. The film was very moving and Cas must be very proud of her now, late, father. We had a number of visitors to this meeting and we always welcome visitors and hope some will become new members. Our meetings are at 7.30 pm in the Avening Memorial Hall on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Gwyneth Simpson Avening WI

Autumn Advice The Clocks Go Back as Autumn Arrives in Tetbury Here in Tetbury, we know that autumn has truly arrived when the mornings become crisp, the leaves begin to turn and darkness starts to settle over the town earlier each evening. Soon the clocks will go back by one hour, giving us an extra hour in bed but also signalling the return of longer, darker evenings. For a town like Tetbury, surrounded by beautiful Cotswold countryside and connected by a network of country lanes and footpaths, the changing light is something we all notice. The familiar walk into town, a trip to the shops, an evening visit to friends or a journey home from one of our local pubs and restaurants can all feel quite different once darkness arrives. Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy Tetbury and its surroundings, but the shorter days also mean it is worth taking a few simple precautions to keep ourselves and others safe.

Be bright and be seen

poor light, particularly on unlit roads.

If you are walking after dark, particularly along roads or quieter country lanes, wearing something bright or reflective can make you much easier for drivers to see. A small torch is also useful, especially on lanes and paths where street lighting may be limited.

Look out for our neighbours

Cyclists should check that their front and rear lights are working properly and that their bike is ready for the wetter and darker months ahead.

Take extra care behind the wheel Autumn driving around Tetbury and the surrounding villages can bring some additional challenges. Early darkness, wet roads, fallen leaves, mist and low sunshine can all affect visibility and stopping distances. Drivers should take extra care on the roads around the town and on the rural lanes leading towards surrounding villages and hamlets. Slow down when conditions demand it, keep your windscreen and lights clean and allow plenty of time for your journey. Remember too that pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders can be difficult to spot in

The darker evenings can be particularly challenging for older residents or anyone who may feel less confident going out after dark. Tetbury has always been proud of its community spirit, and something as simple as checking in on a neighbour, friend or family member can make a real difference. It is also worth taking a look around your own home. Make sure outside lights are working, paths and steps are clear of fallen leaves, and entrances are well lit. These small jobs can help prevent slips, trips and falls as the weather changes. Although the clocks going back means saying goodbye to those long summer evenings, autumn in Tetbury has plenty to offer. There are still wonderful walks, local events, independent shops and cafés to enjoy, as well as the beautiful countryside right on our doorstep. So, as the clocks go back and the evenings draw in, let’s all take a little extra care, keep an eye out for one another and help make Tetbury and the surrounding communities safe, friendly and welcoming throughout the autumn and winter months. If you would like to volunteer to help us in our work, please get in touch or speak to one of our members.

What a busy start to the autumn we have had… …and I would like to start by thanking my colleagues in the Feoffees and Thirteen and all residents who participated in our September events, from the Community BBQ at the Millennium Green, to visiting our display on Heritage Weekend in the Market House and finally the Beating of the Bounds and presentation of our accounts. I hope that by the time you read this there are still some apples available in our community orchard on Herd Lane – please be careful if you do enter and use the orchard, as the ground is uneven.

Over the summer you will have noticed that the cows were only in Preston Park for a while, this is due to the gates being regularly left open and the cows having to be rounded up on several occasions. We need the cows every year to help us to maintain this area and keep the grass down, without them the grass is difficult to control. Could I ask you to please close the gates behind you, even when the cows are not in residence.

An important date for noting in your diaries now is the annual Christmas Light Switch On, which will take place this year on Friday the 4th of December– the Feoffees will once again be decorating the Market House, making it a focal point for the town celebrations. Lance Vick, Chairman

Tetbury and District Footpath Group with a pub lunch at the Highwayman Inn. Then fairly close to home for a loop around Coaley Peak and Selsley Common (a lovely mix of woodland and fine views). Finally, further afield to Haresfield, heading towards Oxlynch into Standish Wood, skirting Haresfield Beacon (lunch at the Beacon Inn).

Summer into Autumn Hopefully not speaking too soon, but it appears that the oppressively hot weather may have passed for this year. No doubt we’ll soon be complaining that it’s too cold and wet! As previously mentioned, if you fancy trying a walk or two, just check out our website and get in touch (details below). Our remaining walks in August covered a wide area: Sherston, taking in Easton Grey, the river Avon, and the Fosse Way; Kingscote village, through the lovely

Hazelcote and Horsley valleys, and Kingscote Wood; and finally, a slightly longer journey to the villages of Great Barrington, Sherborne and Windrush. September was a busy month with five walks. Firstly, a hilly outing covering Uley Bury, Downham Hill and Cam Long Down. Then a local walk to the south west of Tetbury (nice countryside, rarely losing sight of the church). On to Brimpsfield next for a stroll through the high Cotswolds,

Four walks are planned for October, starting with an outing to the Severn Vale, from Upper Framilode, taking in the River Severn and the lovely village of Framptonon-Severn, with lunch available at the Ship Inn. Then, quite close to Tetbury, for a stroll around Shipton Moyne, Brokenborough and Easton Grey. Next, an easy walk from Badminton, taking in the surrounding woodland and parkland. We end the month with a circular through fields and lanes from Rodmarton, passing Hazleton Manor and Tarlton. Details of our Walks Programme and other information can be found at www. tetburywalkers.co.uk. We aim for a wide range of walks in terms of distance (usually five to seven miles), difficulty and location. Some start from Tetbury itself, some are further afield, almost always within thirty minutes’ drive (lift shares always available), and sometimes there is the opportunity for lunch in a village pub. If the idea of exploring our glorious countryside and meeting new people appeals to you, why not try out a walk or two? Just check out the programme online and let the walk leader know or contact the group via the website. We’re a friendly group and new members are always very welcome. We’ve been treated to a couple of splendid shows since our last article. In July we saw Helen George, of ‘Call the Midwife’, take the lead in ’High Society’ – full of good tunes and light-hearted fun. The original film starred Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra, with music by Cole Porter, and was a version of the 1940 hit, ‘The Philadelphia Story’. Songs like ‘True

Love’ have become classics. Porter was the perfect composer for this play, with his clever, sophisticated style and intimate knowledge of American High Society, and this revival caught the mood very well. In the summer we had a visit rather than a theatre trip, so August found us heading

for Kew Gardens, on a VERY HOT day – the following day Kew was highlighted as the hottest place in the country! We were given an excellent tour, dodging from shade to shade, and were then able to explore at our leisure, including an exhibition of Henry Moore sculptures. September saw us heading to The Watermill Theatre, Newbury for an amazing theatrical experience, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. We enjoyed a meal together in the restaurant and then took our seats in the auditorium. For Act 2 we adjourned outside where the actors took us to the fairground and then went back into the theatre for the rest of the action. We wondered how the producers would manage a car that floated and flew, but they did. The versatility of the cast was amazing as they played many various instruments and their interaction with the audience was lovely. At a time when there is so much doom and gloom in the world, this was a welcome message of unconditional love and hope, and we all returned to Tetbury with light hearts and a smile on our faces.

Come along to Tetbury Film Society… …at the Goods Shed to experience the magic of seeing film on the big screen. We have curated another strong selection of films for everyone to enjoy, whether you become a member or a “pay-as-you-go” visitor. It is our hope that there is something for everyone. From modern day Norway, in the family drama ‘Sentimental Value’ and the San Luis Valley in ‘Rebuilding’, to 1990s Iraq in the Oscar nominee ‘The President’s Cake’, and back to 19th century Paris in ‘Colours of Time’. From the unique storytelling in the Greek drama ‘Hen’, to the biopic reimaging of the making of the ground-breaking French film ‘Breathless’ in ‘Nouvelle Vague’. Films starring acting legends such as Sir Ian McKellen in ‘The Christophers’. For dates and the full list of films, look out for details in this month’s Advertiser. On Wednesday the 14th of October we will be screening ‘H is for Hawk’, cert. 12A. Based on the bestselling memoir by naturalist Helen Macdonald, Claire Foy is excellent in this moving tale of the year spent training a Eurasian goshawk in the wake of her father’s death. Her handling of Mabel is remarkable, even more so knowing that goshawks are a notoriously difficult bird to train because of their independent nature and high energy levels. The cinematography is beautiful, filmed in locations across the South West and South Wales. We hope that this film makes a strong start to our new season and tempts you to come along. Please note that doors open at 6.15 pm for an earlier start time of 7.00 pm prompt. This will give you ample time to choose where to sit and possibly visit the bar for refreshments to enable you to make the most of your evening. Tickets cost £8 and can be purchased in advance using the Goods Shed online booking system (tetburygoodsshed. co.uk) or on the door. We have invested in new technology and can now take electronic payment! Alternatively, it’s never too late to join us Tetbury Film Society a member. For the very reasonable ‘introductory’ price of £27 per person you get to see all our nine films – it’s remarkably good value for money. For full details and an application form visit our website www.tetburyfilm.org.uk, email us at contact@tetburyfilm.org,uk, call Kevin our membership secretary on 01666 504746, or come along early to sign-up. Greening Tetbury On the 9th of September, we successfully screened the People’s Emergency Briefing… …at the Goods Shed. More than one hundred people came to watch the video of nine experts describing climate change risks to an audience of parliamentarians last November. After the screening, there was an honest and open debate about our response to the Emergency Briefing’s message. Visit nebriefing.org/screeningmap to find the next nearest screening.

Wildlife corridors One shocking statistic from the screening was how nature-depleted the UK is, coming 189th out of two hundred and forty countries surveyed. One answer is to develop wildlife corridors which connect wildlife habitats that have become separated, usually due to human activities, such as urbanisation or agricultural expansion. When habitats are separated isolated

populations of animals or plants lose genetic biodiversity, making species less robust. This is especially relevant with climate change where species need to adapt to changes in temperature, weather, habitat, food and water availability. Habitat fragmentation is also a huge issue for creatures that need cover when foraging, inhibiting their movement across their territory.

acquiring new land. An example is in the Golden Valley, where a seamless link is being created between Stroud and Sapperton.

Different corridor models

Hedgerow planting

While driving in Wales, you may have seen narrow structures slung from trees. This is example of a wildlife corridor mainly benefits dormice, but also other animals such as the pine martin and squirrel. In Canada, there are much larger structures on the highways: grizzly bears and elk use these artificial overpasses, while black bears and mountain lions prefer underpasses. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has some very large wildlife corridors (see www.gwt. co.uk/nature-recovery-zones). Their Nature Recovery Zones connect nature reserves to each other, linking land owned by willing farmers and other landowners or by the Trust

Care:Layout 1 22/6/09 21:38 Page 1

In Sussex a 100-mile wildlife corridor is being created, focused on three rivers in the county. Wetlands, hedgerows, meadows and woodland are connecting habitats across farmland and even urban areas (www.wealdtowaves.co.uk).

Planting a hedgerow between two woodland areas allows animals to travel unnoticed between them. Plants benefit as animals transfer their seeds, and insects their pollen. And, of course, a hedgerow also provides shelter for plants, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and small mammals. Needless to say, Greening Tetbury wants to do its bit by planting hedgerows throughout the winter months. Nature needs all the help it can get; developing wildlife corridors is fundamental in this ambition.

Tetbury Ingleburn Trefoil Guild 2026 is racing towards its close, and we’ve had a year of interesting talks and events. We visited Chedworth Roman Villa in August and followed it up with a pub lunch nearby. In September we plan our programme for next year and catch up after the summer break, and we are looking forward to a visit to the Barn Theatre in October to see ‘The King’s Speech’. Our talented members can exercise their artistic talents in November doing Christmas crafts and we have a Christmas meal out in December.

Some of us enjoyed a trip to Scarborough in June to attend the National AGM. The meeting is always interesting and in the evening we were entertained by Nicola Mills, an operatic soprano with an amazingly inspiring life story to tell, and the Saltburn Smugglers, a sea shanty group. We visited York and Whitby, as well as brief stops at Chesterfield and Bakewell on our journey there and back. We were picked up and dropped off in Long Street, which made the journey very easy, and there was a coachful of us, from Wiltshire North and Gloucestershire Trefoil Guilds, so plenty of good company. You do not need to have been a Guide or Brownie to join Trefoil Guild but just support the ethos of Girlguiding to serve the community. If you’d like to know more, contact Liz, our chairman, on ingleburn@ wntrefoil.org.uk or 07773 190776. We usually meet on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7.30 pm at Christ Church, unless we are out and about, when lifts are always available. Helen Price.

Q: I finished school in the summer and since then I’ve applied for countless jobs, but I’m not having any luck - most companies don’t even bother getting back to me. It’s really getting me down - what can I do to be more successful? Navigating your first steps into work can be daunting. If you’re struggling to find a job, you’re not alone - many young people are facing a difficult labour market, but there are practical steps you can take to improve your chances. First, tailor every application. Research the role and employer, then adapt your CV and cover letter or application form so they clearly show why you’re a good fit.

Employers will usually want to see that you understand what they do and why you want to work for them specifically, so link your skills and interests to their values and the job requirements. Be cautious about using AI. It can help you plan or check wording, but don’t rely on it to write your application for you. Employers can usually tell when you’ve used AI, and some may use AI detection tools when screening your application. It’s always best to use your own words. If you’re worried about your limited experience, consider volunteering. It can

Citizens Advice build useful skills, give you workplace examples for interviews and help your CV stand out. Volunteering with Citizens Advice, for example, can offer office and customer service experience. You can find opportunities in your area on our website. If money is tight while you look for work, check what support you can get. You may be eligible for Universal Credit, and some people can get ‘new style’ Jobseeker’s Allowance for up to six months. Check what benefits you can get on the Citizens Advice website. Finally, look after your wellbeing. Job hunting can be draining, especially when you face rejections or no replies. Try to keep a routine, take breaks and talk to someone you trust. If you need extra support, you can contact Student Minds, YoungMinds or Mind. You don’t have to deal with it alone. Tetbury Goods Shed and their first screening is the beautiful and emotive “H is for Hawk”. If you like a great tune and maybe missed the original Steelie Dan first time around then make a date in your diary for Reelin in the Dan a six piece band recreating all the essentials from their classic 1972 – 1980 era. Please check out our advertisement for more information but we continue to do our very best to bring you the very best, across all genres, supported by a dedicated and hardworking team of Volunteers. Without them none of this would be possible.

Am guessing many spent the last couple of months appealing to the “rain gods” or similar, like most of Tetbury the grass at the Goods Shed turned to straw and bare earth but these last few weeks we have seen some so everything is improving slowly. On a more positive note, we held a number of outstanding events here at the Shed including a fantastic outdoor performance by the Festival Players of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors – and we are not complaining about the lack of rain that day! Our Teddie Bear’s picnic for our younger audience went down a storm, even some of

the grown-ups brought their teddies along! And talking of a storm - back at the Shed for another sellout show was comedian Alfie Moore; Jeneba Kanneh Mason (she of the incredibly talented and widely acclaimed musical family) visited in September and there was a very successful screening of “National Emergency” in conjunction with Greening Tetbury . Looking ahead in October we have author Jamie Bartlett advising how to talk to AI and indeed how not to. Tetbury Film Society are moving back to the Goods Shed

And let’s not forget Sasha and her Whistlestop Café team – they really did go above and beyond during all the hot weather to keep on providing tasty food and drink – sometimes in real adversity when equipment couldn’t cope but they kept on going. Not for them “if you can’t stand the heat……………..” The end of 2026 marks ten years of the Goods Shed and we are planning a few celebrations. We have grown and developed so far, achieved so much, reaching beyond that many thought possible but we’re not sitting on our laurels – watch this space or as colleagues like to say “discover something brilliant” here at the Goods Shed Team. Holiday @ Home We had a fabulous couple of days in early August at… …Christ Church in The Chipping, Tetbury, organised by the Churches in Tetbury. Our theme for this year was Down Memory Lane – so you can imagine there were plenty of stories told! Slightly different format this year for the morning, but we still managed our regular lunch followed with entertainment from Tetbury Community Choir and Phil Seal Chair Aerobics, finishing with a tasty tea. Fifty-seven guests plus some carers and supported by twenty volunteers, including two members of Tetbury Guides (who were brilliant helpers!) along with their leader.

We even had a visit from our local MP – Dr Roz Savage – when she was visiting various projects in Tetbury. As many will know the focus of Holiday at Home is to enable some of our more elderly

residents in Tetbury, who perhaps do not get out, or away, as much as others, a chance to meet up for fellowship, entertainment and food! We are financially supported brilliantly by Tetbury Feoffees, who generously give a grant to enable this to be a free event for the guests. We also, for the 2nd year! appreciated and enjoyed a free fish and chip lunch courtesy of Tetbury Fish and Chips. Thank-you to Tina and her team. First Aid support cover from the staff of Aspire Care South West (based in Priory Park in Tetbury) is also gratefully appreciated. If you know of anyone who you feel would welcome an invitation to our next event, which is a Tea Party on Friday afternoon, the 30th of October, please contact one of the co-ordinators.
