Domain Name Do you want your own domain name for your business? Many large and many small companies have opted to register their own domain names for the following reasons:

3.

a.

Try and select a domain name that uses all or part of your company name or words relating to the business you are in.

b.

When you have your own domain name or URL, these addresses tend to be much shorter and easier to remember than some of the long names associated with your site being located within another Web site host’s domain name.

c.

Since you will be printing your domain name or URL address on your business cards, ads, and marketing materials, having your own domain name makes name recognition easier to remember.

d.

Your Web site will be easier to find in a search function when it has its own domain name.

Selecting a Web Site Name If you do not have your domain name please list several choices and we will check on availability for you. We suggest that you use your company name (if available) or something more descriptive if your company name does not indicate what exactly you do. Choose a name for your site that is short, descriptive and easy for the public to remember.

Index/Home Page The main page of your Web site is referred to as your home page, and can also be referred to as an index page, opening page, or storefront. This is generally the first page a person sees when they visit your site. This page will have navigation links to the other pages and/or sites. Links are words or categories that when clicked on take you to another page of information within your site or can link to another Web site anywhere on the Internet. Although not all-inclusive and/or applicable to every business, you will find a list below with some of the main sections you may want to include on your Web site. Please check all that apply and number them according to priority. ‰

About your Business – This section should include a brief mission statement and company history or overview. You may want to include a brief biography on key people within your organization, and depending on the type of business you’re in, possibly even a client list. Tell people what sets you apart from the competition.

‰

Products/Services – Use this section of your Web site as your online catalog. Remember, unlike print media, your online catalog can be updated quickly, easily, and inexpensively. Combine text with pictures to describe each product/service you offer. Use a page for each major product line if applicable. Now is the time to decide whether you simply want to make product information available to your potential customer/clients or whether you want visitors to actually be able to order your products/services online. This decision depends on what your products/service is and the price point. We will assist you in making that determination. Should you decide that taking online transactions makes sense for your business, order forms and shopping carts will need to be designed.

Free Information – Internet surfers love free information. They tend to frequent sites that provide useful information such as news, articles or newsletters relating to your industry, a related field, or a topic of interest. Make sure that the information you offer is updated frequently to keep your customers and potential customers coming back to your storefront again and again. You can also provide interesting and unique information and features to your visitors through links to other sites such as; news services, publications, associations, alliance partners, etc.

‰

Customer Service – As whoever answers the phone in your organization can tell you, their time is usually spent answering the same questions over and over again. Post answers to frequently asked questions, sales literature, product information, and any information your customer service department provides to customers – online. Your customers can access and download the appropriate information in minutes without tying up your phone lines and office personnel.

‰

Customer Research – Customer research can be conducted electronically through feedback forms without the expense of printing and mailing surveys that people never remember to send in.

‰

Technical Support – Many businesses find it useful to provide technical information, specifications, diagrams, parts list, and product troubleshooting information online for customers to access and download themselves.

‰

Ordering Information – If you decide that online ordering is right for your business, include a form that captures the customer information that you require and E-mail it to you for follow up or fulfillment. Survey’s show that the most successful Web marketers offer as many methods of ordering as possible. It’s best to offer online credit cards, fax in, mail in, and 800 phone # in ordering methods. WebStream has a secure server that allows you to put your customer’s mind at ease when ordering online by credit card.

Road Map Now that you’ve spent some time thinking through the organization and structure of your site, you need to map it out using the attached blank “Web Site Tree or Flow Chart”. Print out as many as needed and go for it. Decide how you want the information contained in your Web site to be laid out and linked together and how many pages you will need on your site (WebStream can assist you in determining the number of pages you will need). This document, along with your completed checklist, will serve as the road map our Web designers will use in constructing your Web site to meet your marketing and business objectives.

6.

Design WebStream’s Web designers will handle the design work necessary to create your site; however, there are some very basic design decisions that only you can make. a.

Colors/Design – Does your business already have consistent marketing colors and/or designs that should be used in your Web site? If you have a company brochure and/or other marketing materials already developed and in print, it’s essential that you provide us with copies to use in creating your Web site to be consistent with your traditional marketing image. If you need a new logo design to fit the new image of your Web site, we can assist with that as well.

Graphics/Photos – Your home or index page needs a main graphic to look inviting. WebStream unlike most Web design companies includes the graphic Web site design of custom frames and layout at no additional charge to you. We will sit down with you for a design consultation to assist you in this important decision.

c.

Sound/Animation/Video – These elements can greatly enhance your Web site and are included in most of our proposals at additional charge. Check your Web site proposal for these services. If they are not included we will be happy to quote you prices.

Order and Customer Response Forms If you plan on having online order and/or customer response forms in your site, you’ll need to provide us with a copy of an actual form, or an outline of one that tells us what information you need to capture. WebStream will design and create forms for your specific needs.

8.

Registering your Site Your site will automatically register with the major search engines as the site gets indexed over time. Please be patient, as it can take 30 days or more before your site will start to show up in many of the search engines. Additional marketing of your site is available via the WebStream marketing team. Your site can benefit from custom local search pages, enhanced key-word work, customized landing pages, key-word advertising, monthly tracking, etc. Let us know if you would like to hear about these added marketing benefits.

9.

Updating and maintaining your Site Who will update the content? If you will update in-house, do you prefer to work with HTML, or use Webbased update/insert pages? Once your Web site is completed and online, it’s important that you designate someone within your organization to be responsible for keeping the information on your site current and up to date. Unlike print media, the information on your Web site can be updated quickly, easily, and inexpensively. Update your Web site when you make pricing and/or product changes, or when you add a new product or service. Also make sure to update links on your pages that may have become obsolete. Updates, revisions, and/or additions to your pages will be quoted on a per job basis if you do not have a monthly maintenance contract in place with WebStream.

10. Advertising your Site Make sure to include your E-mail and web addresses on all your business cards, stationary, and marketing materials. WebStream also provides expert marketing and advertising consulting at reasonable prices. Let us know if you would like to discuss these beneficial services. 11. E-mail It is extremely important for your business to have E-mail accounts so your customers can contact you online from your Web site. It is highly recommended that you use different Email accounts to track the level of success of various online marketing campaigns. Determine the needs of your organization and decide how many of your employees will need E-mail and/or access to E-mail accounts. Customer service, technical support, sales, marketing, warehouse, fulfillment, and any other department that will need access to E-mail accounts as you require, or forward existing or new E-mail accounts to existing account.
