A warm and historical region where Tom McDonald made many of New Zealand’s early clarets, the famed gravels derived from river beds provide excellent soils for Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, with the hillsides home to the increasingly successful Syrah. FS SHIRAZ 2014 Clare Valley‘s Knappstein is one of the most recognisable and popular wine operations in South Australia, with the Knappstein name involved in the business there since the late 19th century. In 1894, J H Knappstein, one of the largest vineyard owners in the Clare, co-purchased the premises of the Clare Jam Company and established The Stanley Wine Company. Following its sale, Tim Knappstein went on to establish the Knappstein Enterprise Winery in 1974, which is housed in the heritage-listed Enterprise Brewery building established in 1878 to satisfy thirsty local miners. The company manages its own vineyards, with winemaker Glen Barry focused on producing a selection of handcrafted, single vineyard wines.
