History – Aspen thrived as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom in the 1880s. That early era ended when the Panic of 1893 led to a collapse in the silver market, and the city began a half-century known as “the quiet years during which its population steadily declined.

History – The Ute Indians first inhabited the Gore Creek Valley long before settlers moved west, offering a summer home for the Utes, spending winters in the drier lands of Western Colorado. Settlers moved west into the Gore Creek Valley in the mid 1800’s, turning the area into ranching and grazing land. During World War II the United States Army created a training center south of the valley called Camp Hale, where the 10th Mountain Division trained for skiing and mountaineering skills for combat in the mountainous northern Italy.

Off Season – Vail offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures in the summer:

• Trails for hiking and biking;

The Town of Vail was incorporated in 1966, four years after the opening of Vail Ski Resort. It was established head and built as the base village. to Lions

The area gets about 208 inches of snow per year. The Village – Visitors can walk down the cobble-stone streets from Lionshead to Vail Village, where no cars are allowed.

• Scenic gondola rides up the mountain to the 11,000 foot Adventure Ridge with climbing, disc golf, tubing, lawn games and live music;

One veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, Pete Seibert, returned to Colorado after the war and developed the new ski area. Vail’s first opening day was set for December 15, 1962.

History – The East River Valley was once the summer residence for Ute Native Americans, but they moved on when white explorers first entered the area to trap beaver, followed by surveyors. In the 1860s and 1870s coal and silver mines began to open in the surrounding area, and many little mining towns formed. When silver mining hit on hard times, many of these towns failed. Crested Butte was in a better position to survive because it served as a supply town to the surrounding area.

k

Elk Ave

to Ke bl Pass er

BC

When the coal mines closed, the town began to shrink, and eventually the local high school was closed. Students had to travel 28 miles north to Gunnison to go to high school. The town did not revive until a ski area was built on Crested Butte Mountain in the 1960s. The town is still famous for its historically colorful Victorian buildings.

Location – The town is located in the Gunnison National Forest in southern Colorado, 28 miles from Gunnison, 228 miles from Denver, a 4-5 hour drive. Winter – The primary winter activity in Crested Butte is skiing or snowboarding. The terrain is also prime for backcountry skiing and extreme skiing. The town of Crested Butte has a Nordic Center, offering an ice skating rink and groomed cross-country skiing trails. The area gets about 300 inches of snow per year. Summer – The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame is located in Crested Butte. Other popular summer activities in Crested Butte include hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and kayaking, four wheeling, disc golf, and fishing. Crested Butte has been designated the wildflower capital of Colorado.

The town was incorporated on July 3, 1880 with a population of about 400 people. In addition, around

Crested Butte 1000 miners resided in the surrounding areas. The Coloradocurrent permanent population is under 2,000. elev. 8,885

Why do they migrate?

When the seasons change, butterflies migrate North to new breeding grounds as food plants start to grow. They migrate South to avoid cold temperatures. Monarchs know where to go by instinct. Sunlight signals them to migrate.

Tiger Swallowtail

At the end of summer, a special super generation hatches.These butterflies live 6-9 months. In the fall, when it gets colder in the north, they fly south, all the way back to the Oyamel forests in Mexico, where they spend the winter resting. The journey takes about 2 months

eric

It takes four generations for Monarchs to migrate 2,800 miles from central Mexico to the Upper Midwest.

The 3rd and 4th generations hatch through spring and summer, finishing the journey north.

Females lead the butterflies north from Mexico. The 1st generation live 2-6 weeks as adults. During the spring, the 1st generation hatches in the south. They fly north as far as they can. They lay eggs and later die.
