THE TOWNS OF THE LANDS OF THE RENAISSANCE Capraia and Limite • Traditions by the banks of the Arno Known since olden times as a river port of call, and linked to the life on the Arno, Capraia and Limite have for centuries been involved with the shipbuilding industry, as documented in Limite at the Exhibition Centre for Shipbuilding and Rowing, where you can find miniature models of boats, caulker’s and carpenter’s tools, and documents about the Rowers Association of Limite. On the wooded slopes of Montalbano, beyond the built-up area of Capraia, you can see the remains of the wall of Barco Reale, a large area devoted by the Medici to a hunting reserve, between the 16th and the 17th centuries. There is a also a vast network of trekking itineraries, ideal for lovers of walks and excursions. Cerreto Guidi • Medici lands In the middle of a hilly landscape of vineyards and olive trees, Cerreto Guidi attracts the attention of the visitor, from a distance, with its imposing Medici Complex, erected by Cosimo de’ Medici as a hunting lodge. The Medici Villa is nowadays the Hunting and Regional Museum, presenting a prized collection of paintings and art objects belonging to the Medici.
Empoli • Art and History History, art and culture are the three protagonists of the city of Empoli, proud of its old quarter, of great artistic value, and proud of being the birthplace of important historical characters, such as the painter Jacopo Carucci, known as Pontormo, and of the musician Ferruccio Busoni. The main historical buildings surround the Piazza Farinata degli Uberti or dei Leoni: Palazzo Ghibellino, seat of the Palaeontology Museum, the Palazzo Pretorio and the Collegiate Church of St Andrew, with his fine art gallery, one of the oldest ecclesiastical museums, presenting true Tuscan masterpieces of the 14th to the 16th centuries. In the Pontorme borough the town, you can visit the house where Jacopo Carucci was born, as well as the church of St Michael, where his paintings of John the Evangelist and the Archangel Michael are displayed. 4
Fucecchio • A castle on the Via Francigena The history of Fucecchio is linked above all to the Via Francigena ( the old pilgrim way which some one thousand years ago linked Canterbury to Rome), that here crossed the Arno, a part of whose antique stone pavement may still be tread on around Galleno. The heart of the city consists of the Corsini Complex, on the remains of the old mediaeval castle, now the seat of the Fucecchio Museum, and of the Poggio Salamartano, a religious centre for the local population since the 11th century. The journalist Idro Montanelli was born here. The Montanelli Bassi Foundation presents a vast array of documents about the journalist and his studies of Rome and Milan, entirely moved in there. Montelupo Fiornentino • The town of Ceramics The centuries old tradition of artistic pottery in Montelupo Fiorentino, both workshop and kiln to the Florence of the Renaissance, still lives on thanks to the activities of renowned factories and numerous handicraft workshops. The Pottery Museum, recently updated and extended, presents the manufactures of the local studios, starting with the Middle Ages, going through the period of greatest Renaissance splendour, and ending with our own times. Every year, in June, the history and the traditions of Montelupo are revived on the occasion of the International Pottery Fair. This includes shows, exhibitions, and art events lasting a full week. Vinci • Leonardo’s town In Vinci everything refers to Leonardo, the proverbial Renaissance artist and genius. The house where he was born, set in an olive grove, in a landscape which is still intact; the Church where, according to tradition, he was baptized; the places in town that witnessed his presence or celebrate his memory, such as the theatrical Piazza de Guidi, redesigned by Mimmo Paladino. And also the Leonardo Museum, devoted to Leonardo the Inventor, Technologist and Engineer, where you will be able to extend your knowledge with the help of guided itineraries.
