In the midst of our often frantic pace of life, it can be easy for clutter to accumulate, even in the most sacred place - your home. Getting to work or sending the kids off to school on time often takes priority over putting away an item of clothing or the latest electricity paid or in some cases unpaid bill.

But, in the battle against organizational chaos, you don’t have to be the chronic loser. A well organized home can mean a lighter attitude and a sense of order that can spill over into other areas of your life. Let’s take a look at some ways to de-clutter your home.

Paper, whether in the form of mail, newspapers, magazines, bills or lists, can be a major source of home clutter. A first step in getting your arms around paper flow is to create a sound filing system. Use an accordion folder, a large binder or a filing cabinet to organize your bills and other important household documents. Be sure to label binder tabs and file folders appropriately so you can find these papers when needed. Did you know that Junk mail kills hundreds of thousands of trees each year!

Chances are that if something has been gathering dust for months or even years, it’s likely to continue doing so. A simple rule of thumb when tackling home organization is “when in doubt, throw out.” Organizational experts advise that items not used or worn in nine to twelve months should be purged, donated or sold. Ask yourself: will the purchase bring happiness or function in some way? If the answer is yes, don’t hesitate. If the answer is no or you’re not sure, wait to make the purchase.
