V = Volume of the cold air in m^3 A = Area of open windows in m^2 h = time in hours Assumptions: - 14 windows per hallway of 1 m^2 each = 14 m^2 - However, they are not opened all the time, we assume that have of them is always open. Therefore A = 7m^2 - Opening time of the windows is 6 hrs spread over the day. Volume of cold air in cm^3 = 1000 * 10^6 cm^3 A = 7m^2 h = 6 hrs of opening time. V = 1000*10^6 * 7 * 6 = 4,2*10^10 cm^3

Assumptions : - Typical room conditions apply, therefore C = 0.00121 J / cm^3 * K - The temperature difference during the day stays the same and is the difference between average winter temperature in Milan and the room temperature. C = 0.00121 J / cm^3 * K ∆T = 24-6 = 18 °C = 18 K V = 4,2*10^10 cm^3 Q = 0,00121 * 18 * 4,2*10^10 = 914760000 J

1 kWh = 3.6 MJ In our case: 914760000 / 3.6 * 10^6 = 254,1 kwh Cost of 1 kWh in Milan, Italy: 0,09133 E 254,1 * 0,09133 = 23,21 E


Calculations When the windows are closed some heat loss happens as well. We need to calculate this to see the difference.

So total energy cost per hallway per day: 23,21E – 0,17E = 23,04

Heat loss formula: Q=A*U*∆T A = Area of open windows in m^2 U = Heat loss coefficient in W/m^2 * °C ∆T = Difference in Temperature. (Tinside-Toutside)

The heat lost with windows closed is hardly anything, therefore it is very valuable to make sure they aren’t opened unnecessary

Assumptions: - The windows are typical old double glazed windows A = 7m^2 U = 2,5 W/m^2 * °C ∆T = 18 Q = 7 * 2,5 * 18 = 315 W Windows are opened for 6 hours so heat loss: Q = 315 * 6 = 1890 Wh 1890/1000 = 1,89 kWh Cost of 1 kWh in Milan, Italy: 0,09133 E 1,89 * 0,09133 = 0,17 E
