Fashion is different to each person. But most will agree fashion allows you to communicate who you are to the rest of the world. Being “fashionable” does not mean you care what others think about what you wear but rather that you care how you look. It is taking advantage of an opportunity of self-expression. It is articulating your character to everyone around you.

Or politics, would you vote for someone who ran for office in basketball shorts, tennis shoes, and a t-shirt? Would you give them the time to give their speech? Fashion affects where companies spend their money but mainly where consumers will spend their money. Fashion determines what music is popular and what artists are admired.

You can choose to express how you feel everyday without words. Fashion isn’t just clothes; it is art, architecture, interior design, cuisine, dance, music, etiquette, entertainment, politics, media, technology and economics.

El “GÜEY”

Por Luz María Dozal

MÉXICO ES UN PAÍS QUE TIENE UNA GRAN CULTURA Y UN LENGUAJE MUY EXTENSO.

U

http://www.flickr.com/richardsharman

esa persona.

A

DESEOS DE UNA MUJER MODERNA Por Luz María Dozal

tros pies! No!

8

“Vamos a conquistar nuestros derechos”.

No,

queridas colegas, inteligentes, realizadas, liberadas y abandonadas!

Making You an Unforgettable You by: Miss Know it All

It is hard to believe but I understand them. I get them. I know how they work and what they want. I am determined to share my secrets with the rest of the female population. Stick with me girls and you will find Mr. Right.

Keeping a man interested can often become a challenge. We are often left wondering what we did wrong and how we can make sure we don’t make that mistake again. If you are in a happy relationship then do not change a thing. I suggest you keep doing what you are doing. But if you are seeing each other less and less or if things are just rocky then I might be able to help. Be unpredictable. We have heard time and time again, men like a challenge. If he begins to predict what you will say or do, it will become stale to him. You have to maintain his interest by keeping him on his toes. Do something spontaneous and wild with him. Express a side of yourself, you normally don’t let him see. Do not become clingy. Men hate needy girls. Most men are looking for an independent woman who can take care of themselves and are secure with who they are. Do not assume you will spend every moment together. Instead embrace the nights that you will not share together and hang out with your friends. Everyone needs a balance in their relationship. Let him enjoy the nights he has with his friends and you with yours. And, please do not call every hour to check on him! That will make him think you do not trust him! Tell him less. The less he knows about your life the more he longs for you. Try to be vague and short. He will be so intrigued about the details and ask for more. Confidence is key. Men adore women who are very confident in who they are and what they want. Men are attracted to women who are not emotionally needy. They want someone who can manage their own life and make their own opinion.

REGLAS

para alcanzar

la

Felicidad

No envidies.

No persigas “La perfección”.

DORM ROOM DECORATING 101 By: Amanda Vision

The dorm room is no longer cold, cramp, or plain. It is now easier to create more space and make it more functional. And, you can do all of this without sacrificing style or spending too much. Your dorm room should be a reflection of your personality and enable a good living space to focus. Your dorm room should be “Zen”.

I would bring my summer and fall clothes and switch them out as soon as winter would come. Now, I didn’t mind until you had a few cold days in the months in between seasons and I didn’t have anything to

keep me warm during the day. With these bags I can bring all of my clothes and just hide them under my bed without taking up any of the little room I have.

D

Try to paint the room a color that will add light and one that is soothing for you to relax. The color alone will make you forget you live in a cube.

First ‘For Teens Only’ Expo Gears Up To Create Change for Teens & Parents

S

Local politicians and community leaders support the mission

Some 5,000 teens and parents are expected to attend the first “For Teens Only” expo—a multi-cultural educational event on Saturday, October 3 from 10 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Convention Center, 501 S. College Street, Charlotte, NC. It’s an allday event with workshops, speakers and recreation designed to provide solutions to help reduce teen violence, encourage teen safety and educate parents on how to stay connected with their teens. The theme of the expo is “I Am Worth Saving.” The expo is hosted by Girl Talk Foundation, Inc. and New Birth-Charlotte.

SPONSORS:

Several local politicians including Charlotte mayoral candidates John Lassiter and Anthony Foxx and

NC Senator Malcolm Graham will be on hand to support the event. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe will lead a parent workshop on “Keeping Them Safe.” Several teens will be highlighted when video messages they’ve created are shown during the expo—teens express ‘Why They Are Worth Saving’ and what issues concern them. “Overall, the expo is designed to create opportunity for us to talk about some of the key issues many in our community face, connect them with agencies that can help and take what we’ve learned to improve services or programs or provide new ones” says Executive Director of Girl Talk Foundation, Inc. Janine Davis.

The expo also includes dozens of non-profit agencies and interactive vendor areas like a cyber lounge, skateboard alley, indoor soccer field and literary lounge. Parents and teens can visit Johnson C. Smith University’s “University Row” where they can ask college admission officers from various universities questions about furthering their education. There will also be a job fair for parents. Tickets are $10, and special VIP tickets for teens are $20. Kids ages 5 and under are free. Additional ticket and vendor information are available on the website at www.forteensonly.net.

Reinforcing the Basics

It isn’t just about hooking up with her but about getting her to stay. My name is Average Joe and I will be helping every man learn how to keep her from looking elsewhere. True love doesn’t just happen. It happens over time spent with one another. It is accomplished with tolerance and understanding of our differences. Whether you are in a long term relationship or just getting out on the field again, these rules will help you keep any woman that comes your way.

Rule # 1: Women know they are beautiful. Beautiful women want to be treated as lovely as they are. We are not saying that these women are better than men just that the woman you decide to be with should be better than the others. You should at least treat them like they are better than any other woman. You need to make them feel like the best. Rule # 2: Now a days it takes more than just flowers and a simple “I love you” to keep women happy. Yes, we do understand women are complicated. And yes, we do know that we might never understand them. “The Honey moon” period only lasts for a few months in each relationship. Make sure that you make everything very memorable. You should try and make every experience different and romantic. Rule # 3: Do not act snotty or cocky. Most women are tired of men who act like they are better than them. Be more humble. Put her first; always think about what is the best for her. Reinforce memories with her. Replay special moments and let her know you remember. She will adore that you paid so much attention to detail. Rule # 4: Listen. The problem with a lot of relationships is the communication. Make sure you can recall what she says. You don’t like to always repeat yourself and I am sure that she won’t either. Rule # 5: Always remember the five fives. These are important to making any relationship healthy and strong.

oel Osteen is a pastor for a new generation. Referred to by many as a voice of hope, Joel Osteen reaches one of the largest audiences in the U.S. and across the globe. Tens of millions of people worldwide are inspired through his weekly television broadcasts, his New York Times bestselling books; his sold out worship events in arenas across the country, and his popular weekly podcast. According to Nielsen Media Research, Joel is the most watched inspirational figure in America. His weekly sermon is broadcast into television markets across the U.S. where it is viewed by 7 million Americans each week and more than 20 million each month. The weekly broadcast is seen in nearly 100 nations around the world. Joel Osteen’s audio podcast is downloaded nearly 4 million times each month. He is the pastor of America’s largest church, according the Church Growth Today, and one of the most diverse - Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas which has over 40,000 attending its weekly services. A native Texan and the son of John Osteen – a highly respected minister of the Gospel and the founder of Lakewood Church

20

– Joel attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he studied radio and television communications. In 1982, Joel returned to Houston and founded Lakewood’s television ministry where he produced John Osteen’s televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999 when his father passed away. For many years John Osteen encouraged Joel to preach, but he always declined preferring to work behind the scenes. In early 1999, Joel felt compelled to accept his father’s invitation and he preached his first sermon on January 17th of that year. Little did anyone know that would be the last Sunday of John Osteen’s life. Two weeks later Joel began preaching and later that year was installed as the new Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church. Almost immediately, weekly attendance began to grow at an extraordinary rate and, in 2005 Joel moved Lakewood Church into its present location, the former Compaq Center, a 16,000-seat arena that was once home to the Houston Rockets professional basketball team. Joel’s extraordinary success can be found in his core message: That our God is a good God who desires to bless those who are obedient and faithful to Him through Jesus Christ. It is Joel’s deepest

desire that his own life be an example of that principle and that everyone who hears this message of hope and encouragement would choose to accept salvation through Jesus Christ and God’s goodness and mercy to become all that God wants them to be. ictoria Osteen has always had a passion and energy for life that is contagious. Working alongside her husband, Pastor Joel Osteen, Victoria serves as co-pastor of Lakewood Church, in Houston, Texas. Under Pastor Joel and Victoria’s leadership, Lakewood Church has grown in every area of ministry and has become the largest and most diverse congregation in America today with over 40,000 attending weekly services. As co-pastor, Victoria is an integral part of each service at Lakewood and Joel Osteen’s worship events across the U.S. As a wife and a mother of two children, Victoria is an inspiration and mentor to women everywhere. She is committed to helping women, children and families discover their purpose and reach their highest potential in Christ.

Her desire to meet the needs of women led her to found the Women’s Ministry at Lakewood Church to strengthen and develop the lives of married, single and professional women. Victoria also supports The Bridge (a battered women’s shelter) and Feed the Children. The Greater Southwest Houston Chamber of Commerce honored Victoria Osteen with a Community Impact Award in 2006. A life-long Houstonian, Victoria attended the University of Houston while working as a senior buyer in her family’s finejewelry business. In 1986, her life changed when she met Joel for the first time. A year and a half later, they were married and she left her family’s business to devote herself to full-time ministry. She soon began traveling to the world’s most impoverished villages in countries such as India, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. In October of 2008, Simon and Schuster Free Press released Victoria’s first book Love Your Life which became an instant New York Times bestseller.

SKIN DEEP

By: Fanny Morales

T

The first reference to this quote was in 1613 by Sir Thomas Overbury, “All the carnal beauty of my wife is but skin deep.” Over the past few weeks I have been observing people as much as I can. I am often surrounded by a lot of different people. If there is one thing I have learned it is that you can always wear expensive designer clothes, get your nails done, or change your hair. You can work out as much as you can, diet your entire life, and have as much plastic surgery as possible. But if you do not feel beautiful on the inside there is no way to be beautiful on the outside. Looks fade, trends change constantly, and people come and go. Is it fair to say a person is beautiful only by their looks? Imagine a woman who is a nurse. She works 60 hour work weeks because she wants to be with her patients that much and barely has time to herself. She is middle

22

| TEQUILA MAGAZINE | WWW.TEQUILAMAG.COM

aged and works way beyond necessary. Is she beautiful? Or, let’s take the model wearing a size two, with a “perfect body”. Is she only skin deep because she is beautiful on the outside? How about the high school student who is in band and math leagues? She belongs to five different clubs and in all honor classes. Is she beautiful? What makes beauty? Is it how one looks? Where one works, what they wear, how they act? There was a study done in Australia where only 1% of women thought they were beautiful. Can you imagine? That means 99% of women think they are ugly. They believe that they aren’t good enough not even for themselves. Beauty is a little of everything. Beauty is

goodness, kindness, grace, charm, charity, and loveliness. It is also humility, meekness, humane, loving, compassionate, and considerate. I am determined to deliver a message to all young girls: Beauty is only skin deep. Eventually, regardless of how much plastic surgery you have, beauty fades. There will always be someone taller, smarter, quicker, and skinner. Give to the poor. Feed the hungry. Help those who can’t help themselves. I am not saying to not take care of yourself. You should always have your best interest at heart and take care of yourself mentally and physically. But do not become obsessed with it nor forget about what really matters. If there is one thing I have learned it is that there is no guarantee in beauty but of good character and temperament there always is a guarantee.

Cadillac CONVERJ

2010

A

At first blush, the Converj may be the most exciting concept to emerge from Detroit this year. It sort of looks like the beautiful CTS Coupe from last year’s show was crossed with a Lamborghini Gallardo to resemble a Cadillac— only sportier. But this wild-looking concept is more than just a pretty face. The hook here is that the Converj has the same innovative

power train as the much ballyhooed Chevrolet Volt. As a result, the Converj is claimed to travel 40 miles on electricity alone, thanks to the lithium-ion battery pack that is recharged by a small four-cylinder engine. General Motors now calls this technology Voltec, and they appear to be getting very serious about it. In fact, GM announced that they will be in the battery

business, partnering with a Korean company to research and build them, including a state-of-the-art laboratory that will likely be built in Michigan. Maybe the best part about the Converj is that someone finally made an environmentally friendly eco-mobile that actually looks good. What a concept.

WITH A NEW LOOK, AN EXTENDED CHARLOTTE FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERES AWARD-WINNING FILM WITH NEW YORK AND LA

SEPTEMBER 21 -27, 2009

Both films are being presented in partnership with International House, a non-profit organization that serves as a center for diversity and advocates for people of diverse backgrounds.

The Fourth Annual Charlotte Film Festival is a weeklong celebration featuring 68 local, regional and International films directed by known and emerging filmmakers. This year’s lineup features films that capture the triumphs and struggles of merging cultures and highlight the resulting issues. Festival Director Louis Gurgitano added three days to this year’s festival from Sept. 21-27. He continues to build global partnerships to celebrate Independent film. A native of Uruguay, Gurgitano last year partnered with German filmmakers to create a film exchange program. This year, the festival is showing eight films written and directed by students in Uruguay.

“9500 Liberty” reveals the startling vulnerability of a local government targeted by national antiimmigration networks using the internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial division, residents formed a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual town halls, setting up a real life showdown in the seat of county government. The devastating social and economic impact of the “Immigration Resolution” is felt in the lives of real people in homes and in local businesses. The film’s directors plan to attend the festival and share their experience with participants. The festival kicks off the 21st with a free public screening of the classic satire, “Dr. Strangelove” in celebration of a shared 45th anniversary with Park Terrace Cinema. Afterward, the festival will present its opening night film, “In/Significant Others.” The film is a multi-narrative drama that navigates through the different lives of one city’s residents and is directed by local filmmaker John Schwert. The festival’s closing night film is “The Eclipse”, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. “The Eclipse” stars Ciarán Hinds (“Munich”) as a widower adjusting to being sole caretaker of his two young kids during a literary festival which brings him in contact with supernatural-fiction writer Lena (Iben Hjejle, “High Fidelity”).

“Amreeka,” makes its national theatrical premiere Sept. 25. The heartwarming story, also featured at the Sundance Film Festival, chronicles a Palestinian mother’s struggle for a new life with her son in America. The film, starring Hiam Abbass, is a universal journey into the lives of a family of immigrants and first-generation teens caught between their heritage and the new world in which they live.

Films will be shown at EpiCentre Theaters in uptown, Regal Park Terrace Stadium 6 and Syke’s Auditorium at Queens University of Charlotte. Educational panels include a final cut express lab, self-distribution and financing workshops, a RED Camera demonstration, as well as acting and improv workshops.

The film is one of eleven invited to the festival, including “Football Under Cover,” a documentary highlighting a soccer game that brings a German team to Iran. What makes this match unique are the players – all women who live in different cultures but share a common love for the sport only men are allowed to

“Arcangel Miguel”

i
