Dr.JasittplaysakeyroleintheacademicsuccessofeachofTech’svarsity student-athletes,managers,andgraduateassistants.Hisprimarygoalsare toprovideguidanceandacademicresourcestopermitstudent-athletesto maintaintheiracademiceligibilityunderNCAArulesandtoprogresstograduation.Inthisprocess,Dr.Jasittservesasaprimaryliaisonbetweencoaches and faculty. Adetail-orientedpersonandadiligentworker,Dr.Jasitthasdevelopedasolid understandingoftheoperationsoftheAthleticsDepartment,thestaffand the needs of its student-athletes. Inadditiontohisacademics/studentwelfareroleswithinAthletics,hehas servedincomplianceandadministrativeoperationsrolesintheTechAthletics

Department since 1998. Dr.Jasittisalsohighlyinvolvedinpromotingreadingandliteracyatallage levels.Hewasthe2008-09presidentoftheTTUCounciloftheInternational ReadingAssociationandisactivelyinvolvedinthatorganization.Healso hasservedonthePresident’sCommissionontheStatusofWomenforseven years. RaisedinYork,Pa.,heearnedabachelor’sdegreefromPennStatein1978 andaddedamaster’sinpublicadministrationfromValdostaStatein1987.In 1993,hereceivedamaster’sdegreeineducationfromOldDominionUniversityandaddedaPh.D.inliteracyeducationfromTennesseeTechin2004. Dr.JasittisaformerCommanderintheU.S.Navy.Hiswifeof30years,Donna WhiteJasitt,isaformerCaptainintheU.S.NavyReserve.Theyhavetwo children,IanandMeagan.IanrecentlyreceivedhisseconddegreefromTech, thisoneinEnvironmentalGeology.MeaganisaseniorPre-PhysicalTherapy major at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

TheWINProgramwasimplementedinthefallsemesterof2004toprovide additionalsupportforfreshmenandstudent-athleteswhosegeneralacademicprogressplacesthematriskformaintainingeligibilityandgraduating. Theprograminvolvesthestudent-athlete,coach(es),academicadvisor, tutors,andotherstobuildacademicskillsforsuccess.Participationinthe programisprimarilybasedongrades,andcoachesortheacademicadvisor mayrecommendadditionalparticipationatanytime.Allincomingfreshmenmeetatleastonetimeperweekwiththeircoachtodiscussacademic progressandneedsaswellastimemanagementandstudyskilltechniques. Otheraspectsoftheprogramincludemonitoredstudyhours,tutoring,and study skills workshops.

ThesuccessofTennesseeTechUniversity’sathleticteamsistiedcloselytotheacademicprogressofeachstudent-athlete,andtheacademicperformanceofeachTechstudentathlete is closely monitored by the coaching staff as well as an experienced staff in Academic Services, led by Dr. Lance Jasitt. Student-athletesarethemostvisiblecomponentofauniversity,entertainingthousandsoffans,students,alumni,familyandfriends.Theirathleticabilitiesandachievementsarea focus for national attention, as athletic events not only bring back faithful alumni, but serve as a welcome mat to the university for potential new students. Student-athletesdevotemanyhourstopractice,conditioningandtraininginanefforttobethebesttheycanbe.Thesehoursarenotrequiredbynon-athletesinthestudent body, and these extra demands can compete with academics for the student-athlete’s time and energy. TheTechAthleticsDepartmentworkstoprovidehelpwithcoursecontent(throughtutorsandmonitoredstudyhours)aswellaswithtimemanagementandstudyskillsandany other academic support services that will allow Tech student-athletes to maximize their academic potential.
