THE DALAI LAMA
The knowledge of Tibetan Healing Science is one of the world’s oldest historical traditions based on an authentic origin. From the very beginning of human civilization in Tibet; the highest plateau in the world, people of Tibet have discovered and inherited the rich and innumerable experiences of maintaining the physical and mental health and skin health care. Even the animals and birds have healing knowledge like the way a deer (Cervus albirostris Przewalski) knows how to treat its wound by seeking the herb Soroseris hookeriana, and a bird like Alanda gulgula finds the herb, Medicago lupulina to apply on the crack on its egg shell. Therefore, human’s healing knowledge is undoubtly known, like the way apricot kernel oil is being applied to smoothen the skin of the body; Melandrium glandulorium being used as a perfume; mixture of washing soda and Ulmus punila as a shampoo; honey, mineral exudates, Asparagus racemosus and Acacia catechu being applied on the face to protect from the effects of harsh and cold weather exposure; applying residual barley of Chang (Tibetan beer made by brewing barley) to reduce the swelling; using melted butter to check the bleeding and heal the wound; using pig’s fat to heal the cracks; goat’s fat and Arnebia sp., for clearing the scars; mustard oil and butter to moisturize the skin, etc. These practices gradually laid down the foundation to evolve the knowledge of Tibetan Healing Science and its branch, Skin Health Care. Generally, skin is considered as the largest and most sensitive organ forming the outer covering of the body. As it is said in Tibetan Medical Text Gyudshi (The great four Tantra), “Flesh and skin are like the plasters of the house”, skin resembles the way plastering the walls of the house gives it a nice phyical appearance and protects it from the damage caused by the external factors. Therefore, taking good skin health care keeps the skin healthy with glow and radiance. Besides, it also adds to the beauty, longetivity and sensory powers. But mere application of skin care products will not be effective in creating a healthy skin as healthy diet and life style with peaceful mental attitude play a key role. This is the basic principle applied in Tibetan Medicine as a remedy for the treatment of physical and mental disorders. As mental stress diminishes the glow and strength of the body, disturbance in the state of rlung (Loong) energy, which 5
is the main factor responsible for the inner mental functions and outer sensory functions of the skin; suffering from chronic illnesses or ageing processes like distortion of body structure, appearance of wrinkles, graying and loss of hair and weakening of sense organs; harmful effects of due to external toxic pollutants, weapons and evil spirits or disturbances in the serous fluid, which is present widespread in the body. These factors cause disturbance in the physical and mental functions, which penetrates through the skin to the blood, tissues and organs to give rise to various skin disorders like moles, freckles, blemishes, acne, warts, wrinkles, cracks, rough and dry skin, scars and vitiligo.
