W

illiam and Kate h a v e ended their Diamond Jubilee tour of the Far East and South Pacific, under the shadow of the controversial pictures of a topless Kate printed around the world.

The royal tour has been a huge success, not just for the royals, but for Malaysian tourism. Lastminute.com have said that sales of hotel stays and flights to Malaysia had risen by 34 per cent compared with the same period last year, while bookings to Singapore have soared by 51 per cent. The increases were for

bookings made through the agent’s website since September 11, the day the Duke and Duchess began their royal tour. Their Diamond Jubilee Tour started with a twonight stay at Singapore’s Raffles hotel. They also visited the city-state’s Botanical Gardens, the Kranji Memorial Cemetery, and the Gardens by the Bay.

Last Friday and Saturday was spent in Malaysia. The royal couple visited Kuala Lumpur, before heading to the jungles of Borneo, home to orangutans, clouded leopards, Macaque monkeys and the pygmy elephant. They stayed at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, an exclusive retreat in the rainforest. Page 3

Continued from page 1 On Sunday, they travelled to the Solomon Islands, where they were greeted by warriors in traditional dress. They also visited the tiny South Pacific island of Tuvalu for the final leg of their tour. The Duke and Duchess were carried from their aircraft by islanders and treated to a raucous welcoming ceremony. They are the first members of the Royal family to visit the smallest of the Commonwealth realms since the Queen in 1982, and will be the first to stay overnight on the island. On Tuesday the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge won an injunction preventing Closer magazine showing any more photos of her sunbathing topless. The Tribunal de Grande Instance in Nanterre, Paris also ordered the magazine to hand over all files of the pictures to the royal couple within 24 hours. Closer, was warned it would be fined 10,000 euros (£8,070) a day for each day the injunction was not respected. The civil case ruling prevents Closer, which published the pictures last Friday, from reusing them in print or on its website, as well as from selling them to markets where they have not been published. The pictures are already widely available on the Internet and have already been printed in Ireland’s Daily Star newspaper and Italy’s Chi magazine which is also part of Montedori, itself owned by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. William and Kate also initiated criminal proceedings over the images with the aim of getting Closer’s editor and the photographer or photographers who took them prosecuted. A French prosecutor has begun a preliminary investigation into the criminal complaint. The Irish Daily Star suspended its editor, Michael O’Kane, pending an investigation into the newspaper’s decision to use

the pictures on Saturday. The decision infuriated media mogul Richard Desmond, who jointly owns the Star with INM. He said he wants it shut down, with insiders at his company warning: “He says what he means, and means what he says”. Alan Shatter, the Irish Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, has said the Republic will introduce privacy laws on the back of the scandal. The scandal first erupted last week when Closer ran the images of the royal couple enjoying a private holiday at Chateau d’Autet, near Aix-en-Provence. In an angry response St James’s Palace said in a statement that a red line had been crossed, and that it had taken a step back to fifteen years ago, a direct reference to the harassment that Princess Diana suffered prior to her death. Closer’s publisher, Mondadori media group, also produces Italian gossip magazine Chi, which had promised a 26-page special edition featuring images of the royal couple on holiday. In 2006, Chi published the socalled ‘last photo’ of Princess Diana as she was being given oxygen by a paramedic moments after the car crash that killed her. The palace said no decision has been taken on separate legal proceedings in Italy. French Closer, which is run by a different company to the British edition, caused outrage when it printed several pages of explicit images taken of the couple at a private hotel this month. The move was condemned but did not stop the Irish Daily Star carrying the images on Saturday. The tabloid’s future is in question after Northern and Shell, which publishes the Daily Star and the Daily Express in the UK and jointly owns the Irish title with Independent News and Media, indicated it was taking steps to have it shut down.

3

French Closer defended the decision to publish the pictures, saying the images “are by no means degrading”. They argued that William and Kate were visible from a public road, and that the pictures - taken with a long lens - did not breach their privacy. Chi, which has the same owners as French Closer, the first magazine to publish the images, featured the grainy photos along with a series of articles on topics such as, “Kate’s breasts, natural or fake?” The publication also complimented Kate’s “practically perfect” physique. The magazine’s editor Alfonso Signorini argued that the pictures represented “extraordinary reportage”. For the first time, the future Queen of England was appearing in a natural way, without the constraints of etiquette,” he wrote. “The fact that these are the future rulers of England makes the article more interesting and topical. This is a deserving topic because it shows in a completely natural

way the daily life of a very famous, young and modern couple in love.” He said: “As a journalistic scoop it satisfies the curiosity of the readers. It’s the first time that the future Queen of England has been pictured in such a way, they are natural pictures, and there is no morbidity about them. There is nothing that could affect the dignity of the person involved, the Duchess of Cambridge. And lastly they were taken on a public road by photographers on public land.” Chi and Closer are part of the Mondadori group, owned by Italian former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and chaired by the politician’s daughter Marina. Mr Berlusconi is believed to be trying to make a comeback to frontline politics, but an article in the Rome daily newspaper La Republica, which has been one of his fiercest critics, said the pictures would damage relations between England and Italy. Columnist Francesco Merlo accused the former prime minister of betraying an allied country by permitting the publication of the photos, despite requests from Buckingham Palace not to do so. He wrote: “This is the triumphant outcome of the famous conflict of interests. Berlusconi does not understand that a gossipmonger is not compatible with a statesman.” He added that the publication of the photographs would permit the Queen to permanently eliminate Mr Berlusconi from her list of “accredited statesmen and gentlemen”. A Swedish magazine has published topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge. Its sister publication in Denmark will do the same in the coming days. Sweden’s Se och Hoer published the pictures in a three-page spread that went on sale on Wednesday while Se og Hoer in Denmark will put a 16-page supplement on sale later. The Swedish publication includes 11 of the pictures taken during Kate and William’s vacation, five of which show the princess’s bare breasts and one which shows her adjusting her bikini bottoms.

Tenerife Trials Mars Robot

NOTHING resembles Mars quite like the terrain of Tenerife, and with this in mind Spanish robotics specialist, Alberto Medina Andrew chose the spectacular landscape of Las Canadas to display two prototypes created in mind for the future exploration of Mars scheduled for 2018. Spanish company GMV, have built two: the largest is Idris, weighing about 300 kilograms, smaller than the Curiosity, the robot currently exploring Mars, the second of the robots has been christened Indie. The Idris, has five cameras and is capable of creating threedimensional maps, as well as detect obstacles, navigate autonomously and recognize rocks of scientific interest, with a range of up to 400 meters. It is equipped with cameras for stereovision, high degree of zoom and high resolution. For Alberto Medina using Tenerife is an obvious move: “It is similar to what we find on Mars, both because of the undulations of the ground and its composition”. Tenerife is well known as an ideal film location, and is now it is reaching the next level and representing other planets.

Too Old To Learn A New Language? lOCal neWS

NOW that the new academic year has started and children are returning to their lessons, parents may wonder what is the appropriate age for children to start learning a new language. The answer may surprise you; scientific studies indicate that a high capacity to absorb new languages is in the first months of life. This fact was discovered in 2007 by researchers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada). The researcher followed 36 babies, who were shown a picture of a person uttering phrases in English or French, hiding the sound. This helped to confirm that children have the ability to distinguish between different languages by the gestures

of the person’s face while uttering them. Another study conducted by Cornell University in New York (USA) showed that when people learned two languages in childhood,

they were stored in a specific brain area. By contrast, if individuals learned it at different times (one in childhood and another in adulthood) they were stored in a

different area, which entails greater effort when speaking the second language. Clearly, it is best to introduce children in learning a new language

as soon as possible, but the question is where? In London School of English in Tenerife, has begun a new pilot program aimed at children aged two to three years with their parents, so that, together they can learn to communicate in English, practicing different everyday situations and exchanging ideas. It is an interesting and novel way of introducing children to a new language, whilst at the same time their parents reinforce their knowledge. But what if your child is a little older? Is there a chance to learn successfully if you start later? Leslie W. Wintsch, director of the London School of English, says that you can “always” learn to express yourself in another language. He is a prime example, learned Spanish as an

adult but, as he admits, “my pronunciation is not brilliant.” His advice to make learning a new language, whether as a child or adult is simple consistency. What is clear is that if it has always been important to have a second language, at present, the current economic crisis and the difficult and competitive job market, it is increasingly essential to be able to communicate in English or French or German, it is what makes the difference between keeping a job or not, or just opening up new job opportunities. In fact, the director notes that many of his adult students have started the challenge of learning a new language motivated by the desire to seek work outside their own country or to keep their jobs.

It isn’t all bad news for the people of Tenerife! Wine has become a very important product of the island over the years and has won many prizes. The 2012 grape harvest is the best in recent years despite the drought, which is affecting almost all other Canarian crops. After two years when leading growers have experienced bad weather and pests, this season is amazing by its sheer quantity and quality of grapes. Although there is still approximately a month to go until the end of the harvest, experts predict yields of 7,000 kilos of grapes per hectare,

one of the prerequisites for a production to be considered remarkable. The Regulatory Council of Tacoronte-Acentejo is expected to harvest nearly a million and a half kilos in the region. José Manuel González, a member of the board committee says; “These

numbers only represent 30% of the grape harvest that is grown in the northern region, which include municipalities of Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria and Santa Ursula and it is estimated that the overall total will be around six million kilos”.

Oktoberfest Have A Drink in Tenerife On Us

It’s one of the things that Munich is most renowned for, but an Oktoberfest is coming to Tenerife. The traditional German beer festival will take place over twelve days between 12 and 22 October with Canarian and German food, Canarian wines and, of course, German beers, as well as typical Bavarian music. The archetypal beer tent will be set up in front of Miraverde in the Costa Adeje, and will have an attraction park alongside for all the family. The Oktoberfest will be open between 5pm and midnight between Monday and Thursday, and 11am to 2am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entrance is free, and prices inside the tent will be “popular”. The Oktoberfest will coincide with Adeje’s Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

Shooting Club in Adeje

THE local council in Adeje has announced that the upgrading of the shooting facilities at Taucho, will result in a venue of Olympic standards and that the work is expected to be finalised in November. Sports Councillor for Adeje, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera has expressed his delight at the fact that the new upgrade has progressed so quickly. Once it is finished, it will be the Islands only official shooting range. Ferrera said that shooting was extremely popular with Islanders and that it is hoped it will attract a number of tourists to the area. Currently there are 2,800 gun licence holders on the island, classed as shooting enthusiasts, but it is hoped that the new club will attract tourists to the venue and, as part of the Islands tourist plan, it will increase jobs and help to boost the economy. The club will have, alongside the range, a warehouse to store ammunition, a classroom for lectures and a café bar. The shooting range covers an area of over 45,000 square metres and the landscape and vegetation will be taken into consideration to enable the full exploitation of the local scenery. The next Canary Championships which starts on November 23rd is expected to be held at the range.

Lego Challenge

LEGO is making its way back into fashion amongst young people. However, this time it goes way beyond a toy. Children aged between 10 and 16 have the possibility of creating robots with these plastic blocks recognized worldwide. On Monday, the Cabildo of Tenerife announced that it will be taking part in the International Lego League Tournament involving more than 200,000 young people in 60 countries and Tenerife will be hosting a regional heat. The contest, which celebrates its eighth edition next year internationally, aims to promote creativity, coordination and teamwork of the young The heat will be on 23 February 2013

at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor, in Arona, and the winning team will take part in the final in Spain in March and then onto the international final, to be held in April in St. Louis, United States. Young people between 10 and 16 must be in their school teams of three to ten participants and, with the help of a coach, achieve two challenges: developing a robot built of Lego and program it to through a computer to perform tasks on a game board; conduct a scientific project to propose innovative solutions to real problems on a particular theme, which this year focuses on providing solutions for improving the quality of life of the elderly. To do this, children will have to find out about the lives of the elderly, their history, their daily challenges and which activities are more difficult to perform

for them, either recovering from an injury, keeping up with new technologies, or trying to remember certain things or manage their finances. For Pablo Lopez, 11, the challenge of the contest will be easier, he has been a student at the academy Robotechnic’s in La Laguna, a centre where children can learn mechanics, programming or technology

robotics while playing. Lopez and four of his friends showed the robot they have created over the past few months and it is able to sort out the rubbish and put plates on a table in a house in a mock-up of a city made with Lego. “I’ve always liked Lego and when I found this centre where I can learn how to make robots, I was very happy,” he said. Lopez is clear: “I really want to be a

robotic engineer. I hope that my school is watching as I really want to take part.” The City Council, through the Science and Technology Park of Tenerife, has organized this tournament in order to promote science and technology as something exciting and fun. The application period will remain open until October 18 through www.firstlegoleague.es web.

El Hierro’s Earthquake Continues

VOLCANIC activity on Spain’s El Hierro Island has resumed far below the Earth’s surface similar to last July, albeit slightly stronger, according to Maria Jose Blanco, director of the National G e o g r a p h i c Institute, or IGN, in the Canary Islands. Blanco said that a peak of seismic activity is under way, a continuation of the volcanic process - a shifting of magma many kilometres under-ground - that began in July 2011 which, although the main activity ended at the time with an undersea eruption, did not mean that the overall activity had come to an end. The IGN official said that at present it is

not expected that the seismic movements that have been registered - which have occurred at depths of some 20 kilometres (about 12.5 miles) - exceed 3.2 on the Richter scale, a fairly low level. Blanco could not specify how long this new round of activity would last. Officials with the regional government of the Canaries told that experts had verified “an acceleration of released seismic energy accompanied by deformations” in underground structures. At the moment, the largest movement registered so far was the one measured at 3.2 on the Richter scale, which was felt on Saturday for some 13 hours and 15 minutes by the residents of the municipality of El Pinar.

the major vessels of the Russian Navy schools. In fact, its current name is a tribute to Admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern, the first Russian to circumnavigate the earth. She also passed through Santa Cruz In November last year.

A

T H L E T E D a r i u s Dorta has fulfilled his dream. After three days climbingthe trails and roads of our island, he finally reached the peak of Teide completing the Runspiral 2012 challenge. This long distance runner found last Sunday to be the most trying but backed by his support team (the team VidaTrail) and always accompanied by his family, including his brother Cesare. Dario left Guía de Isora at dawn on Friday to walk the trails of the Natural Park of Teno down to the Plaza de los Remedios Buenavista del Norte. He met the mayor of Buenavista and

then made his way down to Garachico. He had completed 150 kilometres of the challenge, but the next

30 proved to be the most punishing as he had to overcome heat, fatigue and a terrifying vertical climb hugely

punishing for his legs, who suffered as he had never done to reach Viera y Clavijo Square Los Realejos. However, his determination allowed him to overcome the 180 kilometre mark. From there he began

to recover slightly from the punishing pace, and he entered the Realejos smiling as he realised he had passed the hardest stage of the challenge. Darius was granted a short break taking a moment to regain

strength surrounded by his wife and children. It was the end of the trial: the rise of Teide. He left Los Realejos around eleven at night, in an effort to complete the journey. He knew the land well as part of his preparation was spent on the slopes of the huge volcano Tenerife. He had a panel of support runners chosen to accompany him on the last leg. Darius Dorta took on Mount Teide… and won. He had left Santa Cruz on Friday and on Monday had run 280 kilometres up to the peak of Mount Teide. It has been praised as one of the greatest feats of sporting history in Tenerife. He was running in aid of a Cancer charity and won praise from the charity, his family and various national and international newspapers following his progress.

British couple survive 300ft fall

BRITISH couple, Matt Woods and his girlfriend Chelsea Eastwood, s t u n n e d onlookers when they survived, uninjured after their car shot 120ft down a cliff.

Woods, 24, and girlfriend Chelsea, 22, crashed through safety barriers in their Mitsubishi after swerving to avoid a cat. Their vehicle rolled down the rocky cliff face before smashing into a tree, and landing on its roof by a walkway — below which there was a 300ft fall to the sea. Seconds later, the pair amazed onlookers by emerging from the windows with only minor cuts. Matt and Chelsea, who set up home in Benidorm, Spain, only five months ago, had

been heading back from a shopping trip on Friday. Barman Matt, originally from Oldham, Greater Manchester, said: “The back end of the car just went. The next thing I was rolling down the cliff. I don’t think anybody could believe we survived.” A shaken Chelsea said: “It was a very lucky escape.”

Spanish March Against Austerity

TENS of thousands of people staged rallies in Spain and Portugal to protest against punishing austerity measures. Demonstrators threw tomatoes and fireworks at the Portuguese headquarters of the International Monetary Fund in Lisbon and two people were arrested. A SCHOOL in Spain that runs a one week professional course in prostitution has won a court battle against the Spanish government after it was accused of encouraging prostitution. For 100 euros, students are taught the history of the world’s oldest profession, how to use erotic toys and the most popular positions contained within the Kama Sutra. The school began advertising the course in May, but within weeks the Valencian regional government filed a case with prosecutors, alleging that the school promoted prostitution, which is illegal in Spain, just after it advertised courses that were on offer to the public. But the court heard that there was no evidence that a criminal offence had been committed; advertisements for students did not promote prostitution, constitute fraud, and were not aimed at minors. The venture has attracted much criticism in the predominantly Catholic

Prostitution is a career that many people live off from day to day, whether they are single or have a partner,” he said. He added that 95 people, from the age of 19 to 45, had signed up to the diploma - which takes up two hours each day. And, once they graduate, they receive their first job offer - to become a teacher in the “school” where they can help in practical classes. In many countries around the world, prostitution is legal and regarded as a profession, but in countries such as Spain the profession is still regarded as a crime and punishable by death.

The tornado happened around midnight on Wednesday, and caused part of the roof of the monastery to fall in and caused further damage to the front of the building. Various trees also fell during the storm. Three of the occupants of the monastery were injured, and taken by ambulance to hospital at Inca. Another ambulance attended to the slightly injured people at the scene. The tornado reached around 148 kilometres an hour, and was classed as level 1, on a scale of one to six.

Two Female Police Officers Shot Dead WOrld neWS

TWO men are being held in connection with the murder of two female police officers who died after being shot during an incident involving one of the country’s most wanted men, Dale Cregan, in Manchester. Fiona Bone, 32 and 23-year old Nicola Hughes were killed in a hail of bullets and a grenade attack while answering “a routine call out” about a suspected burglary in Hattersley, Greater Manchester.

One officer died at the scene and the other died later in hospital. They died after walking into the apparently empty council house, where the windows had recently been whitewashed. Police are attempting to establish who called in the burglary report. Assistant chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, Garry Shewan, said: “A long and dark shadow has been cast across Greater Manchester and my thoughts are with the officers’ family, friends and colleagues. We will be doing everything we can to support them over the coming days and weeks.” Cregan, 29, was being sought in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son. Shortly after the policewomen were shot, he walked into a police station and gave himself up. He was arrested on suspicion of murdering the police officers - as well as the original two counts. Cregan was arrested in June in connection with the murder of Mark Short but was released on bail. Sir Peter Fahy of Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable said it was “absolutely normal” for police to release people where there is insufficient evidence available for them to be charged. Witnesses say up to 13 shots were fired during the incident. There are also reports of an explosion and of police officers running away from the scene in tears. An army bomb disposal vehicle was also at the scene. A neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that there had been suspicious activity in the area recently. Assistant chief constable Shewan said: “This is a tragic day for the

whole force and we are currently piecing together exactly what happened. “I understand that the community will be fearful as they hear news of what has happened. We have armed officers patrolling the area and we will aim to keep people updated as much as we can.” Home Secretary Theresa May said: “This is a deeply shocking incident and a terrible reminder of the risks that police officers face every day to keep our communities safe. “A £50,000 reward had been offered for information leading to the arrest of Cregan who police wanted to speak to about the murders of David Short, 46, and his son Mark, 23. David Short was killed at his home in Folkestone Road East, Clayton, on August 10, while Mark was gunned down at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden

on May 25. A gunman walked into the pub and fired shots which injured three other men. A postmortem examination showed Mark Short died from a gunshot wound to the neck. This latest incident has again raise the argument for police to be armed. Ash Rathband, whose police officer father David was shot and blinded by gun maniac Raoul Moat, called for police to be armed after the two policewomen died. PC Rathband was found hanging at his home in Blyth, Northumberland, in February, having been blasted in July 2010 while on duty, sitting unarmed in a traffic patrol car. His son tweeted: “It’s time for police to be armed in my opinion. Yet again another awful incident” Window cleaner Warren Shepherd was working nearby when the

attack happened. He said: “All of a sudden I heard gunshots, quite loud, about ten in a row, then a pause and then a big explosion. I thought, that doesn’t sound right. I walked round, saw a police car, the engine was still running and the lights were going. It was unreal, it was quiet. After about a minute or two police cars and ambulances started to arrive.” Speaking on Tuesday, Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said: “Clearly we are devastated today by the loss of two of our officers. This is one of the darkest days in the history of the Greater Manchester Police if not for the police service overall, because we have lost two deeply loved and valued colleagues, because they are part of our team. Policing is very much a family.” He paid tribute to Miss Hughes, describing her as a “chatterbox” and a “great bobby” who was “always smiling”. He said Miss Bone was a “calm, gentle woman”, an “excellent bobby” and had been in the middle of planning her civil partnership. The police flag at GMP headquarters was been lowered to half-mast. Prime Minister David Cameron

said the killings were an “absolutely despicable act of pure evil”. The cold-blooded murder of two female police officers doing their job out there protecting the public, another reminder of the incredible risks and great work our police service does.” Nicola Hughes, 23, who lived in Oldham with her mother Susan, had “always wanted to make a difference”, her relatives said. Her mother, father Bryn and younger brother Sam issued a statement saying: “Nicola was our only daughter and a beautiful child. She was always happy with life and lived for her family. Nicola was only 23-years-old and had the whole of her life in front of her. We cannot express how we feel today except to say we have always been exceedingly proud of Nicola and always will be. She knew she was loved by us all and we shall all miss her dreadfully.” Flowers have been laid in tribute at the police cordon. One note attached read: “RIP For Our Two Brave Fighters Fiona and Nicola. Sadly Missed By All. Our Thoughts Are With Your Families.” A similar tribute said: “Forever in my thoughts and hearts. You will be missed so much. Lots of hugs, Paula, RIP xxx.” A further card read: “Nik and Fi, You swore to protect and serve. I hope you can still do that from heaven with all the other police guardian angels. The family of PC Fiona Bone paid tribute to a “wonderful daughter, sister, partner and parent”. PC Bone, was soon to be married and leaves behind her partner Clare and daughter Jessie. “Fiona enjoyed life to the full from her days with the Air Training Corps, rugby at university, to her service with the police,” the family said in a statement. “She was planning her marriage to Clare and this joy has been taken from us.

Lady Gaga Perfume WOrld neWS

TOTALLY bonkers Lady Gaga marked the launch of her new perfume ”Fame”, by getting a tattoo done inside a giant bottle in front of onlookers at a lavish New York party. The eccentric pop star appeared in a giant scent bottle - a replica of her fragrance bottle for the launch at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan, wearing a sparkly top, skirt and red wig. The Bad Romance singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, then stripped down to her lingerie and posed while having the tattoo of a winged cherub done on her scalp. Lady Gaga applied makeup and played on an iPad inside the bottle, where she was joined by four others. Edith Piaf and David Bowie music and various songs featuring Kanye West played in the backg round. She later made an appearance at Macy’s f l a g s h i p

store in New York for a closed meet-and-greet with fans, arriving in a horse-drawn carriage shaped like a bottle of Fame. Explaining her fragrance, the star said: “Fame is the first ever black eau de parfum. So it’s

black inside the bottle and then, once you spray it, it’s clear and it’s beautiful and it’s exciting to be a part of innovative project with some great people.” When asked about the actual scent, Gaga said: “It’s a quite delicious, succulent, slutty,

seductive fragrance.” The singer made headlines last year for saying she wanted her perfume to have notes of blood and semen and that it would be suited to “an expensive hooker”. The masquerade black tie museum event featured

a few hundred people, mostly dressed with eye masks and headgear. Celebrities who felt the need to be part of this event included Yoko Ono, Marc Jacobs, Paris Hilton, Jason Wu and Lindsay Lohan, who arrived late for the event.

said he turned to prayer as it gave him strength. But Mr Falaile’s health began failing and he died on July 4. “I left him there overnight and slept next to him like at a funeral,” Mr Teitoi said. He

buried his brother-in-law at sea the next morning. Only a day after Mr Falaile had died a storm blew into the area and rained for several days allowing Mr Teitoi to fill two five-gallon containers with water. “There were two choices in my mind at the time. Either someone would find me or I would follow my brotherin-law. It was out of my control.” He continued to pray regularly and on the morning of September 11 caught sight of a fishing boat in the distance but the crew were unable to see him. Dejected, he did what he had done most days, curling up under a small covered area in the bow to stay out of the sun. Mr Teitoi said he woke in the afternoon

to the sound of scratching and looked overboard to see a six-foot shark circling the boat and bumping the hull. When the shark had his attention it swam off. “He was guiding me to a fishing boat. I looked up and there was the stern of a ship and I could see crew with binoculars looking at me.” When the vessel pulled Mr Teitoi on board the first thing he asked for was a cigarette. “They told me to wait. They took me to meet the captain, and they gave me juice and some food.” With Mr Teitoi in no physical danger, the Marshalls 203 continued fishing for several days before returning to Majuro. “I’ll never go by boat again. I’m taking a plane,” Mr Teitoi said.

Saved….. By A Shark

A LOST fisherman, who drifted at sea for 15 weeks, sleeping next to his dead brotherin-law, was eventually helped to safety - by a shark. Toakai Teitoi was stuck on a 15ft wooden boat for more than 100 days after he ran out of fuel and the vessel drifted deep into the Pacific. The 41-yearold Kiribati policeman relived his harrowing voyage after a fishing boat eventually picked him up and took him to Majuro in the Marshall Islands, in the northern Pacific Ocean.

The father-of-six told how he had to sleep with the body of his brotherin-law who died during the ordeal, suffering severe dehydration. He said it was only after the intervention of a circling shark that he was eventually rescued. Mr Teitoi’s ordeal began on May 27 after he had flown from his home island of Maiana to the Kiribati capital of Tarawa to be sworn in as a policeman. Instead of flying home he decided to join his brother-in-law Lelu Falaile, 52, on what was supposed to be a twohour sea journey back to Maiana. But after stopping to fish along the way and sleeping overnight, they woke the following day to

find they had drifted out of sight of Maiana and run out of fuel. “We had food, but the problem was we had nothing to drink,” he said. As dehydration took hold, Mr Teitoi, a Catholic,

Liz Hurley Swimwear Outrage

E

LIZABETH Hurley’s fashion range has been accused of sexualising girls by offering adultthemed swimwear to children aged eight and younger. The 47 - ye a r - o l d model and actress sells swim and beachwear under her Elizabeth H u r l e y B e a c h label.

The collection features swimwear for two groups of children - under eights and eight to 13 - both of which feature bikinis as well as one-piece outfits. One of the designs in the under eight section is the cheetah-print Gemini Bikini, which features “cute candy coloured ring detail”. The website points out that this is similar to the adult June Bikini. Another is the Mini Cha Cha Bikini - also an animal print design - with “sweet frill detail” on the top and adjustable tie sides on the bottoms. Hurley’s website declares: “Teenagers love this, as well as younger girls. This is the mini version of a similar adult’s bikini.” One charity which criticised clothing such as these was Kidscape. The charity’s aim is to keep children safe from abuse, specifically bullying and child sexual abuse. Director Claude Knight said the inclusion of the more risqué swimwear items was part of a worrying trend

to turn children into “kidults”. She said Hurley’s swimwear range was a quality line that included some “excellent pieces” - but pointed out some of the garments featured more of an “adult take” which was not appropriate for children. Ms Knight stated she did not want to single out Hurley for individual blame, but the entire fashion industry should avoid making clothing for children of an adult nature, such as the animalprint designs. In the United States, Jessica Simpson has been condemned for dressing her baby daughter in a bikini. The model, designer and Dukes of Hazzard star was being interviewed by Katie Couric on her Katie talk show when she showed a snap of four-month-old Maxwell in a yellow crochet bikini. Internet bulletin boards were awash with comments both criticising - and defending the 32-year-old. One person posted: “Jessica Simpson put her 4 month old in a bikini, so wrong! She’ll be wearing a bra next.” Another said: “Does Jessica Simpson not have a PR person to tell her that releasing a pic of her 4 month old baby in a bikini would not be considered cute?” But another insisted: “I thought it was the cutest picture ever. Anyone who is thinking otherwise is just sick.”

Low Flying Car WOrld neWS

A COUPLE had a miraculous escape after an out-of-control car crashed into their upstairs bedroom whilst they were sleeping. The couple were in bed at their home in Epsom, Surrey, when the Lexus rounded a bend, mounted a parked Audi, and smashed into the building. The silver car punched a gaping hole in the first floor of the house, blasting debris across the bedroom and en-suite bathroom. But incredibly the couple were unhurt - and police say the three men who were travelling in the Lexus were taken to Epsom Hospital where they were treated for only minor injuries. A number of other cars were also damaged in the incident, and a post-box, road sign and fence were destroyed. A structural engineer was called to check the property as police investigated the cause of the accident, which happened at around 3am last Sunday. One neighbour has described how she heard the early-hours crash. She said: “It sounded like a plane coming out the sky. I think the car flew about 80ft before it came to rest in the side of the house.”

Tennis Hero Returns

ANDY Murray is not usually known for his warm smile and cheer, but he couldn’t stop grinning as he went on a walkabout in his home town of Dunblane. Thousands of fans lined the streets to welcome their local hero back home as the US Open and Olympic champion shook hands and signed autographs, looking more relaxed than ever. Murray’s grandmother, Shirley Erskine, described her grandson’s US Open victory as a milestone in his professional career, getting “the monkey off his back” in his desperation to win a grand slam. Judging by the laughter and warmth at Murray’s homecoming she was right - the transformation in his demeanour was clear for all to see. He was in no rush, this was his homecoming and he took hours to sign autographs and thanked so many fans for their loyal support.

Eileen McGlynn from Stirling, who met Andy on the parade and got his autograph said: “He was just full of smiles and looked so happy. I think the combination of finally getting a Grand Slam title under his belt and then this, the support he’s got from his home town, must be just so emotional for him.” Along the narrow, High Street, decorated with bunting and Union Jack flags, thousands of Murray fans chanted: “Let’s go Andy, let’s go,” as he walked by laughing and joking with the crowds. An hour before Murray arrived the heavens opened, soaking the crowds, but even the Dunblane rain failed to dampen spirits. The crowd’s support and enthusiasm was unrelenting - rather like the downpour. He posed for photographs at the golden post box, specially painted after his Olympic gold medal win, before heading to the tennis courts at Dunblane Sports Club where his tennis journey began as a child all those years ago. Andy and his younger brother Jamie used to play tennis at the club as small children, taught by their mother

and former Scotland tennis coach, Judy Murray. Andy and Judy took time out to put some young Murray hopefuls through their paces with a spot of mini tennis. While chatting to local children at Dunblane Sports Club and signing yet more autographs, Andy described the homecoming as an emotional

experience: “Everyone has been just so amazing; it’s been such an incredible day.” Before saying goodbye to his home town Andy was told he is likely to be honoured with the freedom of the city of Stirling, an accolade he will treasure no doubt alongside his Grand Slam trophy and double Olympic medals.

Mother In Arms

A

B R I T I S H s e r v i c e wo m a n has given birth while serving in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reported. The woman - who is understood to have been unaware of her pregnancy - had a son at Camp Bastion on Tuesday, just days after a Taliban attack. Both mother and baby are reported to be in a stable condition and are due to be flown home within days after being treated by a specialist medical team from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. An MoD spokesman said: “We can confirm that on September 18th a UK servicewoman serving in Afghanistan gave birth in the Camp Bastion Field Hospital to a baby boy.

Mother and baby are both in a stable condition in the hospital and are receiving the best possible care. A specialist Paediatric Retrieval Team is being prepared and will fly out in the next few days in order

to provide appropriate care for mother and baby on the flight home.” The spokesman added: “It is not military policy to allow servicewomen to deploy on operations if they are

pregnant. In this instance the MoD was unaware of her pregnancy. As with all medical cases, when the need arises, individuals are returned to the UK for appropriate treatment/ care.”

According to unconfirmed reports, the woman served as a gunner with the Royal Artillery, and had been deployed with the 17th Mechanised Brigade since March. She only discovered she was pregnant after she went to medics complaining of stomach pains, and the baby was born five weeks premature. She was in the 34th week of her pregnancy, meaning she conceived before flying to Afghanistan for her six-month tour of duty. The birth has stunned military chiefs and led to calls for extra medical checks on women who are sent to the warzone. Almost 200 troops have discovered they were pregnant at war since 2003 – forcing commanders to send them straight back to Britain. But this is the first time a UK soldier has given birth to a baby in Afghanistan.

an ambassador for peace and justice worldwide; and a tireless humanitarian and philanthropist”. Ali, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1984, did not make any remarks after receiving the award. He did manage to wave at the crowds and appeared to examine the medal around his neck. His wife, Lonnie Ali, spoke to the audience on his behalf. She said: “On behalf of Muhammad, let me sincerely state how incredibly honoured he is to be here this evening, as the recipient of the Liberty Medal. It is, to be honest, overwhelming, especially given the remarkable group of people who have previously been the recipient of the prestigious award. It is especially humbling for Muhammad, who has said on many occasions, ‘All I did was stand up for what I believe’.” The Olympic gold medallist and boxing legend developed a reputation for being an outspoken fighter for religious and civil rights. In

1967, Ali refused induction into the US Armed Forces due to his religious beliefs that denounced violence. He was arrested, fined, stripped of his boxing licence and title and found guilty of draft evasion. He took his battle all the way to the Supreme Court, which reversed the decision in 1971, ruling that his refusal stemmed from constitutionally protected rights. Ali regained his title in 1974 and retired in 1981. Laila Ali told the audience: “My father loves people and people love my father, and I learnt that at a very young age, as people would always come up to him no matter where we went. He has always lived his life to make this world better for others. He’s strong, he’s courageous, such a powerful man.” The 2012 Liberty Medal award ceremony was part of the 225th Anniversary of the centre. An annual award, it was established in 1988 to commemorate the bicentennial of the US Constitution.

Mohammad Ali Honoured

WELL-LOVED boxing legend Muhammad Ali has been rewarded for his humanitarian efforts and his work for civil rights at a ceremony in Philadelphia.

The 70-year-old former world heavyweight title holder received the Liberty Medal from his daughter, former professional boxer Laila Ali. The 76,000 Euros award is sponsored by the National Constitution Centre, a nonprofit organisation devoted to the US Constitution. Ali, who once proclaimed himself “the double greatest” but who has been silenced by a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, was honoured as an icon of constitutional ideals and the American dream. The centre described him as “an outspoken fighter for religious and civil rights; a conscientious objector who took his battle to the Supreme Court and won;

Andrew Marr’s History Of The World BBC 1 - 9:00 - 11:00 pm In the opening episode of a major new eight-part series, Andrew Marr sets off on an epic journey through the explosive events, changes, conflicts and triumphs that shaped 70,000 years of human history. From our earliest beginnings in Africa, Marr traces the story of our nomadic ancestors as they spread out around the world and settled down to become the first farmers and townspeople.

Tenerife Weekly - 21st September - 27th September 2012

He uncovers extraordinary handprints left in European caves nearly 30,000 years ago and shows how human ingenuity led to brilliant inventions that are still with us today. Marr discovers how the first civilisations were driven to extremes to try to overcome the forces of nature. And he reveals how day-to-day life in ancient Egypt had more in common with today’s soap operas than might be imagined. It’s all part of an incredible human story about adapting and surviving – against the odds

999: WHAT’S YOUR EMERGENCY? Channel 4 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm This powerful new 10-part documentary series reveals how Britain is changing through the eyes of police, fire and ambulance teams on the front line responding to 999 calls. This week’s programme focuses on relationships When things go wrong, more of us than ever are dialling 999, asking the emergency services to pick up the pieces and protect us from those we used to trust an increasing number of 999 calls involve

relationship disputes, but they’re never easy to resolve The emergency operators are inundated with petty, non-emergency calls, ranging from people falling out over what they’re watching on telly, to others arguing about computer games and who gets to keep the kitten when they split up but domestic arguments often erupt into violence - last year cases of domestic violence increased by an astonishing 35% within a single year

Troubled Brother Beauty Therapy Course

I’m so worried about my brother. He’s had a troubled life and recently lost his flat and has started living on the streets. I live in a 2 bed flat with my husband and 3 kids and I’ve offered him the sofa but he refuses to stay because we have no space. The rest of my family isn’t close so he can’t rely on them. What can I do to help him? Mandy

The fact your brother is either too proud or even too stubborn to accept your hospitality tells me that he really isn’t ready to be helped at all. Why not sit him down and convince him that staying on your sofa is just a stop gap until he can get his own place again? Right now, he’s obviously sinking into the depths of despair and the last thing he needs is to be sleeping in a cardboard box all

I’ve been trying to get into beauty therapy since I was a teenager and it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do with my life. I did a course at an adult college but failed the exam because I hadn’t progressed enough to pass and haven’t even been given interviews because of my lack of qualifications. It’s knocked my confidence and I’m wondering if I’m not good enough to do this? It would break my heart if that was the case. Leanne on his own. Addressing the root cause of his problems may be the only way to help him but again, until he’s ready to accept help, sadly there is little or nothing you can do! Keep trying to talk some sense into him and hope for the best Mandy. Above all, just make sure he knows how much you love him.

Sometimes in life, we all have to accept defeat Leanne. As hard as it may be for you to swallow, maybe you’re just not cut out to be exactly what you want to be. It might be a good idea to speak to the college again and review your options in terms of taking more courses or perhaps fine tuning your expectations. What would you rather do? Spend a lifetime chasing an impossible dream or find something that IS within your capabilities. Don’t be too disheartened by this, the perfect job for you may not be a million miles away from the one you’re dreaming about.

Beauty therapy is a wide ranging field, so give the college a call today and ask them what they have to offer. With the right teacher and the right mind frame, I’m absolutely certain that you should be able to discover where you’re true talents lie and from that point on things should be plain sailing.

Never Had a Proper Relationship Young Son has Leukaemia

I’m 34 years old and I’ve never had a proper relationship. I’ve got lots of friends and many of them are male but I just can’t find someone who I can see myself spending the rest of my life with. I was physically abused by a male family friend when I was younger and I never thought that it’d affected me but now I think perhaps that’s the reason for my problem. Is it too late to solve the harm that it’s caused me? Nicky

I’ve met plenty of people in their forties, fifties and even beyond who have spent their entire lives in turmoil over being abused. Have you ever considered speaking to a counsellor about this Nicky? I know it was a long time ago but you would be amazed at just how much talking about things can help. Take a look at www.abusesurvivors.org.uk which is a website

I divorced my husband two years ago after many years of being in a violent relationship with him. In the last three months our son who is 4 has been diagnosed with leukaemia. I am devastated and the last thing I want to do is let that evil man back into my life. I can’t help thinking though that he is the father and should be told what is going on. What on earth should I do? Jeannie

specifically for people who have been exactly where you are now. This is obviously a huge stumbling block in your life but it’s never too late to change things. You say that you have a number of male friends so I see this as a very positive sign. I’m sure in time things will pan out for you Nicky, you’ve just got to work hard at getting past what’s going on in your mind right now.

It’s difficult when parents go their separate ways, even in a situation like yours, both your ex and your child should be encouraged to have regular contact. Maybe this would need to be arranged under the supervision of social services but ultimately, your son deserves to know his father. As far as this illness goes, I think it just underlines the importance of keeping the contact going. Don’t get me wrong Jeannie, I’m not telling you that you have to kiss and make up with the ex or anything like that. What you do have

to do though is the very best you can for your son. Children need both parents around, especially during the early years and especially when they have something as immense a leukaemia to tackle. Pick up the phone and tell your ex you need him to be adult about things for the sake of your son. Good luck.

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh

CRUMPETS........

Well if you fancy ‘a bit of crumpet’ then look no further These little puppies are easy, fun, cheap and take minutes to make! The amount of us expats that simply adore these babies yet we can pay through the earth to have them as one of our favourite breakfast dishes or tasty little treats! living abroad you will never usually find them on the shelf in the local supermarket so you would have to venture to an importer, and hope that they had them on the last shipment from the uK Well, here’s how to make them!

Ingredients 225g plain flour

1 level teaspoon salt 1 level tablespoon dried yeast or 10g fresh yeast crumbled 1 level teaspoon sugar 275ml milk 55ml Water

Method

Heat the milk and water together in a small saucepan till they are ‘hand hot’. Then pour into a jug, stir in the sugar and yeast and leave it in a warm place for 10-15 minutes till there is a good frothy head on it. Meanwhile, sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl, when the yeast mixture is frothy, pour it all in. Next use a wooden spoon to work the flour into the liquid gradually and beat well at the end to make a perfectly smooth batter. Cover the basin with a tea-towel and leave to stand in a warm place for about 45 minutes it should double in size and be frothy!

To cook the crumpets: Grease the insides of a couple of egg rings, and place them in a non-stick frying pan or on a flat electric plancha on a medium heat Spoon 1 tablespoon of the crumpet batter into each ring let them cook for 4 or 5 minutes: first tiny bubbles will appear on the surface and then, suddenly, they will burst, leaving the traditional holes now take a large spoon and fork, lift off the rings and turn the crumpets over Cook the crumpets on the second side for about 1 minute only re-grease and reheat the rings before cooking the next batch of crumpets

‘DISHWASHER or FISHWASHER’

i’ve heard the idea mentioned lots of times, but it doesn’t sound right! - Cooking fish in the dishwasher amongst your dirty pots, pans and plates? Well i decided to try it! i placed a Salmon fillet in an oven bag, squeezed in some lemon juice along with some fresh Tarragon, dill, and knob of butter, pinch of salt and cracked black pepper i then made sure that it was securely fastened and then placed it in a plastic container with a sealed lid Ok - now time for the wash! The machine was fully loaded with everything from yesterdays dirty cutlery to used coffee cups but a question to myself - ‘do i really put the dishwasher tablet in?’ Surely it isn’t right? Just looking at the

Spread them with your favourite topping straight away, or leave them in the fridge until you fancy a snack- pop them in the toaster or under the grill when you feel the urge!

Have you made it? Created your own variation? Something you want to share? Let me know by email and I will add your comments next time editor@ tenerife-weeklycom

chemicals that the tablet contains is pretty nasty Well YouTube videos and other blogs i found on the net said to run your dishwasher as normal, so here goes! 1 all in one dishwasher tablet (complete with salt!) i set the machine to a normal 60° wash and waited the 1 1/2 hours for it to complete it cycle When i heard the audible bleep to let me know the wash was over; it somehow made me think the microwave had finished! and there, perfectly cooked was the Salmon no water had managed to get into the fish - which was my biggest worry Fillet of Salmon a la soap was not what i was trying to cook!

HAPPY COOKING!

CONCLUSION:

although i would probably never do it again, it did work! but the hour and a half that it took to cook would probably only have taken 5 minutes to poach on the stove! My advice - have a go if you are reallY bored and really have the time to sit and wait for it, but make sure it is properly sealed i take no responsibility if it goes wrong for you, and you contaminate it with any of the chemicals ie Caustic Soda from your dishwasher tablet! after all, the detergent box had irriTanT on it!

Attempt this at YOUR OWN RISK!

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

You Can’t Park Here Lad Orf With Their Clothes! I’m dreading the news next week. First of all we had Prince Harry jumping around totally naked in public, then Kate Middleton is photographed in France with her nellies swinging freely in the breeze. If Prince Philip decides to show us his dangly bits, I am going into early hibernation in the airing cupboard. Even worse, the thought of Camilla in the altogether is terrifying; I mean she looks like Audrey Roberts from Coronation Street! The only Crown Jewels that I want to see in future are locked away in the Tower.. It is rumoured (not) that Prince Edward is planning a Naked “It’s a Knockout”. As Eddie Waring used to say ..... “It’s an up and under” I have to say that although Kate and William were in a private place, they can hardly expect anything else of the French press. Surely they learned some lessons from what happened to Princess Diana. Also, it comes as no surprise to me, that the Princess has boobs. She is a woman after all. A quick walk down the prom in Las Americas is an eye-popping sight on a daily basis!

Richard the third has supposedly been found buried under a car park in Leicester. He was in the remains of a church which had been knocked down years ago. This will be one of the most significant archaeological finds in decades if it proves to be him. He was the last king to have died in battle. An author called Richard Skidmore wants Richard to be given a state funeral. That is a funeral paid for by the state. In my family, all those who have died in the past have paid for their own funerals.

Poor Harry

There has been a lot of talk and controversy about Prince Harry and whether he should be in Afghanistan.

I admire the guy. He is certainly no coward. He wants to be there on the frontline to do the job he has trained to do. The problem is, he could very well be putting his comrades at risk, just by being there. In a recent poll of almost 30,000 people 77 per-cent of those polled felt that he was a liability to the other men around him, simply because the Taliban would make him a target. It is very sad. The royals have so many critics and this young man is trying to do something for the people and for his country. He has worked hard and it now looks as though he will be consigned to the handshaking bin of life. I think that Harry should have been deployed in total secrecy. The press should have had a total block on reporting his orders and job and the guy would have been able to get on with supporting his country. I fear that they will have to bring him back to the UK soon.

Oh, My Word

What happened to Crikey, Cripes or Jeepers Does anyone still use Gosh or Golly or Gadzooks They all seem to have been consigned to the dustbin and replaced by one word. A word that I couldn’t possibly print here. A word that sadly we hear all the time, in the street or on the bus. No more Flipping Heck, By Jove or Gee Whiz, just ****. How sad.

They will most likely bury him next to his queen, who he has been accused of killing. She was resting in peace, but if this fella gets his way, the peace will soon be broken. He is supposed to have killed 2 child princes and was believed to have been sleeping with his own niece to try and have a child with her because his wife was too ill to conceive, State funeral? Hmmph. He should go on the sex offenders register and be done with it! Another thought that occurs to me. He is underneath a car park. I bet he has one hell of a fee to pay after being there all these years.

Seek, Locate, Destroy

Why, oh why, do we keep looking for life on other planets when we haven’t finished discovering and killing everything that lives on earth Surely we can’t wait a few years until we have managed to make every creature on earth extinct before we move to other planets to kill everything that lives there too Having said that, what if there is a

being on another planet, one that is greedier and more selfish than we are. If man is anything to go by, we would be finished in no time at all. As the Rover trolls across the surface of Mars, I can’t help hoping that there is no pocket of life wrapped up in ice. If there is any sign of ancient life on mars, once we have found it, it would be prodded, tested and killed in the blink of an eye..

fter all...... I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.

Dearly beloved, with my own blessing literally days away (we were married in Thailand in April) and a couple of “Hangover” style comedies out in cinemas, I thought this would be a great opportunity to celebrate the wedding comedy!! Out in cinemas now is “The Wedding Video” an English comedy which sees best man Raif (Celebrity Juice’s Rufus Hound) decide that his gift to his brother, the groom Tim (Robert Webb of “Peep Show” fame), will be a wedding video chronicling the entire run-up to the day and the wedding itself, the resulting hilarious video is the film as we see it. Just released on DVD is AustralianBritish production, “A Few Best Men” about a groom on a road trip with his 3 best men, to the Australian outback for his wedding with disastrous results including a sheep in a compromising position and a coked up Olivia NewtonJohn.....what would Sandra-Dee say!! Finally, for some classics well worth renting for a night in, my all-time favourite Adam Sandler movie, “The Wedding

Singer” is both very funny and leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!! The ultimate “stag-do goes horribly wrong” movie is of course “The Hangover” and it’s Thailand located sequel, they feature mishaps such as hotel bathroom tigers, smoking monkeys, missing teeth, facial

tattoos and much, much more. A third and final sequel is released next summer and sees the Wolfpack attempt to breakout nutjob Alan (Zach Galifianakis) from a mental institution!! Finally proving that girls do wedding comedies just as well, maybe better

With what seems like the entire world talking about the topless pics of Kate Middleton, I thought I would give you an alternative published photograph of a member of the royal family showing a little more than intended! Publishers “Vanity Fair” printed the pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless on a private estate, on the front cover of the French “Closer” magazine and now the Irish “Daily Star” and Italian “She” magazine have followed suit. However, my wife has spotted (with

a magnifying glass-why oh why Becky!!) a photo exclusive. Prince Philip, Duke Of Edinburgh, the 91 year old husband of The Queen was photographed at the Braemar gathering in Aberdeenshire and is pictured in 17th September edition of UK “Hello” magazine wearing a kilt and let’s just say he’s not a big fan of underwear, in fact if you peer closely there is definitely something winking back at you!! I wonder if he’s a little disappointed that his exposure hasn’t made any headlines...until now Phil!!!

In these days of recession, filmmakers are finding it harder and harder to get financing for untested (translation: original) material.

than boys is last year’s smash hit “Bridesmaids”. It’s fantastic and my wife and her bridesmaids will be having a night in with this film before our big day!! Enjoy girls!! Last week’s quote came from ZomRomCom “Shaun of the Dead”!!

Crown Jewels!!! Total Remake

Brave (PG) Showing daily at 15:30 hr - 100 min Animation | Adventure | Action Starring Kelly Macdonald, Merida (voice) billy Connolly, Fergus (voice) emma Thompson, elinor (voice) Julie Walters, The Witch (voice) robbie Coltrane, lord dingwall (voice)

Because of this more and more studios are turning to remakes and reboots of titles that were big hits the first time around. “Total Recall” was originally a vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 80s. It was based on the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K Dick whose writing also has been the source material for many films including “Blade Runner” and “Minority Report”. Now “Total Recall” is back, this time

with Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid, a blue-collar worker who discovers that his mundane life is a lie of implanted memories and that he’s actually a secret agent! Unlike the original which saw much of the action take place on Mars, Quaid remains earthbound, however fans of the 80s movie will be pleased to know the three-breasted hooker makes an appearance!! Other notable remakes to look out for include “Robocop”, “Carrie” and “Dirty Dancing”- I could go on forever as more than 50, yes 50 remakes are planned for the next year!! How long before they consecrate your childhood favourite??

This week’s News and Action

This is a first, a review of a postponed game, but this is how I saw the game going The writer and captain, Jim, was on first to show the way and completely had Bungalow mesmerised, and 7 balled him for his first ever loss Then on went Tommo and had Grandad tied up like a Buxted chicken 2-0 to the Bandits Unluckily for the Tascas John our ex captain was on fire, and another 7 baller for the bandits Never in the field of human conflict had one team so embarrassed the other and the Bandits won 10-0 Then I woke up Trap Door 6 V 4 Bar 180 Titans Trappers V Titans, it sounds like the next hollywood blockbuster movie, but there were no swamps, no crocodiles and no chewing tobacco, nor were there krakens, or people with snakes growing out of their heads, it could have been the hare vs the tortoise, but the tortoise had his skates on, what really happened was a great game of pool, oh, and the lady factor, Jamie with his foot injury, could not oblige so up steps Micky, but Terese, the potting princess, just took out the frenchman. Cracking night. Oasis 5 V 5 Nauta B What a cracking night this was, really close frames all the way through, a lot going to black ball game, was an absolute pleasure to welcome the team from Nauta B, this is how the all the games should be played, obviously play to win but have a good time in the process, the lads from Nauta certainly played their part in making the atmosphere so enjoyable, thanks again, looking forward to the return fixture also again thanks to Lesley for the excellent chilli and to Nobby and Jane for keeping the drinks flowing, a good night had by all, cheers. Red Pride 3 V 7 Lupain Cannot believe that this team has not won a game before! Great players and a bunch of fantastic people.... And it could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for Spike (our captain). Let’s see what happens next time... At last! Lupain gain their first points

of the season with a well-earned 7 x 3 victory, things started with a defeat, Suresh losing to Ian first 4 singles shared, but Lupain took control winning both pairs, carried on by taking the next three singles losing the last game .thanks to the Red Lion for their hospitality and good humour. Bar 180 A 7 V 3 Lowrys After Glyn and Danny Irish missed the black ball in the singles a two two score line should have meant a close game but the home team went into overdrive and picked off the next 5 frames to win a convincing 7-3 . Hoops 8 V 2 Clouseaus Emeralds Hoops Bar made their normal strong start and raced into a 3 frame lead with John completing a 7 ball clearance in the first frame...George who was best player for Emeralds made Carl pay for some sloppy play to take fourth but normal service was resumed and Hoops took next four before George again beat Carl before it was left to Bernie to wrap up a convincing 8-2 victory against a team that although newcomers to the league, will cause teams problems and certainly are a welcome addition to this great league with their friendly attitude and good humour.....

Bar Tasca B 6 V 4 Vivos A thoroughly enjoyable evening with great opposition! Tasca B got off to a tremendous start winning their first four singles, with great clearances from everyone! Paulines losing record of 100% finally came to an end with a spectacular pot on the black in the doubles with Les! Vivo’s fought back valiantly and it was looking especially tight! Thankfully for Tasca, Martin, (who also has a 100% losing record at singles) saved the day and won the last game! Looking forward to the re-match at Vivo’s (please get in dorada bottles)! Most amusing part of the evening was Vicki Maknia who was a bag of nerves and couldn’t actually bring herself to watch a single game! Thank you once again for an entertaining evening! Sloop Bar 5 V 5 O Donnels Great game with the O,Donnells boys, 4 one up to them after the first 5 games, by luck Sloop pulled it back to a draw, with Adam and Andrew playing a great doubles, and Barney, Nobby, Adam, finished with a great good to the evening, by the grace of god we didn’t use our wild card stumpy as he was otherwise pre-occupied with vodka......thanks boys we enjoyed the night....see you soon.. ps we can sort out free parking for all teams at home...let us know.

No Charges Over Homophobic Tom Daley Tweet

A footballer will not face charges over a homophobic tweet he posted about Olympic divers Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield. Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said Daniel Thomas’s message was “not so grossly offensive that criminal charges need to be brought” - and said the divers both agreed with the decision. He added that new guidelines for prosecutors on social media cases would also be issued, given the growing number

of complaints. Daley, 18, and diving partner Pete Waterfield finished fourth in the 10m synchronised dive at this

Summer’s Olympics. Thomas, a midfielder at Welsh Premier League side Port Talbot Town FC, posted a homophobic

message on Twitter, which was quickly deleted but later distributed more widely - leading to his arrest. Mr Starmer said: “This was, in essence, a oneoff offensive Twitter message, intended for family and friends, which made its way into the public domain. “It was not intended to reach Mr Daley or Mr Waterfield, it was not part of a campaign, it was not intended to incite others and Mr Thomas removed it reasonably swiftly and has expressed remorse.

Laura Is Loving The Spanish Ladies Open At Golf Las Americas

status of the ladies game, the Spanish Ladies Open has a prize pot of 350,000 euros, the field of 126 players was cut on Thursday night to 60 with even the last placed of those guaranteed at least 1,470 euros. On Thursday all players were competing for the chance to win a Mini Cooper S for getting a hole in one on the par 3 hole 11. The reduced field will compete in the second round on Friday 21st and the third round on Saturday, and then the championship is decided on Sunday from the usual 8am start up to an expected 4pm presentation at the 18th green. The winner will lift the trophy and pick up a cheque for 52,500 euros but they will have to earn it the hard way. Laura can draw on many years’ experience of high pressure golf but faces tough opposition from players like Carlota Ciganda of Spain and Becky Brewerton of Wales. For spectators it will be a feast of golf in beautiful surroundings - and it´s free!

The stirring sight of the Golf Las Americas course bathed in sunshine is enough to inspire any golfer and at Wednesdays Pro Am curtain raiser for this weekend’s Spanish Ladies Open, Britain’s Laura Davies was already savouring the prospect of competing against 125 top players from around the globe. Even a forgettable British Open disaster couldn´t dampen her enthusiasm “I have played this course many times and love it,

there´s a strong field this year but it´s a long hitters course that suits my game and after coming second in the Austrian Open I feel confident with my form”. The Ladies European Tour grows stronger by the year; Laura currently sits in the 12 spot on the Order Of Merit but is well placed to mount a challenge. The Brits have a strong presence at Golf Las Americas including Scotland´s Carly Booth, third in the merit table with earnings of 148,169 euros this year. Prize money is starting to reflect the growing

ASTRO-BARILINA’S TWISTED HOROSCOPES Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

Parrots can be annoying as well as beautifully coloured. Rawwr! Parrots can be annoying as well as beautifully coloured. Rawwr! Rawwr! Parrots can be annoying as well as beautifully coloured. Rawwr! Tip for this week- avoid Loro Parque!

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

Left to your own devices, you are probably heading for a fall. “Shout, shout, let it all out.” A rhyming message, which can really help you out this week. You will be provoked by a spotty teenager. Don’t rise to him.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

A report of startling significance will land on a desk near you over the coming week. This report will tell you everything you need to know about the feelings of another and will help you understand how to begin living the rest of your life.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Love is like a big joke where the punch line doesn’t make any sense. Because, even after your friends explain it to you, it still won’t make any sense. But it’ll happen and it’ll make you feel pretty good about yourself.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

Your desire for more money will never come true unless you get off your bum and do something. If some things start to appear impossible, it may be time to invent robots.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

All the colours in the rainbow will come out to play on other people’s faces. You may be diagnosed with flu at some point this week. Sleep deprivation can affect you negatively, so ensure you wear ear muffs for a guaranteed good night’s kip.

Leo 23 July - 22 August

When in danger, you have a tendency to run away quickly. Harness that ability; as you’ll need it sometime around 4pm on a weekday beginning with ‘W’. Wood may be lucky for you this week, although you’d probably prefer meaty planks to irritating splinters.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September

Peaches and cream are a cheap and enjoyable dessert menu for any supper guests. You think you’re so advanced, but when was the last time monkeys had to worry about their finances?

Libra 23 September - 23 October It’s one thing to pick your nose, but did you notice that your colleague always wipes it in the same place under his desk? Check there when he’s not looking - there’s a rotting mound of snot just waiting to fall off onto his foot. Your lucky name is: Penelope. Scorpio 24 October - 21 November Why not test yourself by not eating or drinking anything. Headaches and random convulsions may become a regular part of your life. Whilst bad things can happen in quick succession, it takes an absolute genius to screw up an entire life within 30 minutes. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December “For Topical Application Only” - words which might cause you grave concern over the coming days. Whenever you feel unhappy, smile and go to the toilet. This action should soon turns things around for you. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January Bits and pieces of the days will flash before your eyes before you’ve seen them. This is all due to the excitement and pleasure at a new found love - your love of drinking methanol.
