Tenerife Weekly - 27th September 2013 - 3rd October 2013

Welcome to our 100th edition! I really hope you enjoy this week’s paper, I have managed to beg and cajole our columnists to pull their fingers out and make this week a really special one, and they didn’t disappoint. A very special vote of thanks goes to Barry Pugh for his cake, he brought the finished delicacy to the office and it went down an absolute treat. Also thank you to John Sharples, he was bullied into coming up with more than double his workload, but

it was worth it. Thank you to Marc Craig for doing his column with a 100 twist, and not too many sci – fi mentions either! Our regular sports commentator, Colin Kirby, dropped out of his comfort zone and wrote a hilarious piece on what we can expect our beautiful Island between now and the next 100 issues. Thank you also to Steve Andrews, he couldn’t work his magic for the 100th issue, but his column is still fab, my garden has benefited from his advice on many occasions! My grateful thanks for regular contributions also go to Janet Ans-

South East Tenerife Industrial Area In Chaos After Canarian Supreme Court Judgement

It wasn’t so long ago that Jaime González Cejas, mayor of Granadilla, was celebrating the fact that all obstacles to the megaport, both technical and legal, had been resolved. Unfortunately, or for some very fortunately indeed, there was an issue so large that, like the proverbial elephant in the room, it was invisible.

The Tribunal Supremo, the highest court in the Canaries, has ruled that the Tenerife Cabildo and the Canarian Government illegitimately usurped national constitutional urban planning powers in its approval in 2008 of the entire Plan Territorial for south Tenerife, which covers some 2,500 hectares of industrial land in Granadilla. This area includes the Granadilla industrial estate, as well as the proposed southern airport expansion, the planned electricity and gas plants along with the two desalination units … and the megaport itself.

The Canarian Supreme Court’s judgment was given in favour the environmental group ATAN (Asociación Tinerfeña de Amigos de la Naturaleza), which says that it is delighted with the result, and that it is now going to seek the nullification of all plans for the various approved projects incorporated into the Plan Territorial since previous Court rulings were predicated upon the assumption that the approvals had been legitimately granted in the first place. Some will be delighted by the environmentalists’ win;

others will despair – whether at the loss of profit so long foreseen and almost within reach, or at the failure yet again of the authorities to follow procedures properly and above board. One thing is nevertheless clear: the new ruling leaves the plans for the whole of the south east coastal area in chaos.

Abama: Good News For Jobs But At What Cost?

Construction has only just started and 90 % of the luxury apartments on offer at the Abama golf resort are already sold. The fully equipped homes, sold as permanent residences but with access to the Abama hotel services, are on offer for between 700,000 and 1,275,000 euros.

The President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, accompanied by the Steering Group Chairman, Ignacio Polanco and the President of Tropical Hotels, Borja Perez Arauna were at a ground breaking ceremony to inaugurate the works. New owners can expect to move into the apartments from 2015. Once all phases of the Abama Luxury Residences are developed, over one thousand direct jobs will be created. The Abama resort includes the hotel, designed by renowned architect Melvin Villarroel, tennis courts and excellent restaurants. Martin Berasategui , one of the world’s most awarded chefs heads up the restaurant “MB“ in addition there

dianamcglone.com

Guía De Isora Coastal Environment Being Destroyed By Abama Hotel’s Desalination janetanscombe.com It’s the pipe, it seems, that carries the salt from the hotel’s desalination plant … it broke three years ago and hasn’t been fixed. The “volcano of salt” that’s being pumped out is therefore not being carried out far enough, and is killing the seagrass area near the coast. This is the area of Tenerife’s great hope … and although I’m not the world’s greatest seagrass fan, it seems that the damage won’t stop there, and will have repercussions for the general environment of the sea in the area.

are twelve other restaurants where you can taste all kinds of foods typically Spanish, Canarian and international including the Kabuki restaurant, with its Japanese fusion cuisine.. MB and Kabuki each hold a one Michelin star, being the only two Canarian restaurants to have that honour. The resort also boasts the largest spa in Europe, with 2,500 sq metres

surface area, 7 freshwater swimming pools and an 18 hole golf course that all require a large amount of freshwater consumption, for which reason it has its own desalination plant. All good news, but what is currently a matter for contention is whether the desalination plant is responsible for the increase in the salinity of the sea water near the resort.

An article in Aquí Sur which has a video with wording in Spanish to describe what is being seen, http://aquisur. info/2013/09/21/el-vertido-incontrolado-de-salmuera-delhotel-abama-aniquila-el-sebadal-de-playa-san-juan. The commentator on the video says: the Hotel Abama knows but it would cost them money to repair it; the Ayuntamiento de Guía de Isora knows but says nothing; diving clubs know but fear reprisals; and the Environment Department knows, but they don’t want problems”. As the commentator ends: now, some more know too. However, now Guía de Isora Ayuntamiento has now commissioned a study from La Laguna University to investigate the leak of salt claimed to be from the desalination plant of the hotel. The hotel appears to be denying that the evidence in the video is connected with Abama, and there are suggestions that it might take legal action against its authors.

NEWS ON THE ROCK

sanidad has initiated its winter flu vaccination campaign 2013-2014. The health department stressed that anyone at risk from flu complications should see their doctor or call 012 as soon as possible to arrange a vaccination appointment after September 30th when supplies will be available. These groups are the elderly, the chronically ill, those with respiratory conditions, pregnant women, the morbidly obese, and health workers themselves. Some 225,000 doses are present, distributed throughout the Canaries, and Canarian Health minister Brígida Mendoza said that this year’s campaign was more important than ever given that there were problems with supplies of the vaccine last winter. That problematic campaign saw numbers vaccinated fall significantly, and Sr Mendoza said that there was an urgent need to restore numbers covered by the protection. the Canary Islands welcomed 6,724,603 foreign tourists in the months of January to August this year, an increase of 1.5% on last year, according to a survey carried out by Frontur, on behalf of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism which was recently released. The figures look even better thanks to the increase experienced during the month of August which was +6.1% when compared to the same month the previous year with a total of 871,337 visitors. British and French nationals are the main growth drivers in the Canary Islands during August, according to the survey, which also shows a sharp rise in the Russian market, while the German market has been in decline for the tenth consecutive month.

Loro parque’s Brand new Babies

Loro Parque had a successful summer and extended its family of animals thanks to the birth of two Californian sea Lions. the little cubs, each of which weighs approximately 10 kg and which are now being fed by their mothers, are the 16th and 17th of the large group of sea Lions housed at Loro Parque and siam Park. this group has been breeding successfully since 1989 and this is due to the high level of care that these sea mammals enjoy.

The cubs, two playful males, spend most of their time with their mothers swimming and playing in the roomy areas provided for

Bathers in Playa de las Américas were advised by security and emergency services to leave the sea and beach area on Mondy afternoon around 4pm after a shark was spotted swimming near the coast. The two-metre long creature seems to have been swimming in a one kilometre stretch of the Veronicas area. After a couple of hours a Guardia Civil crew searched the area but the shark couldn’t be seen. There have been around a dozen instances this summer of sharks spotted in Tenerife’s waters. They are said to be to the largest extent harmless, but still cause alarm when seen. EasyJet has just added a new route from London Southend to Tenerife. EasyJet has already started selling seats on the route, which launches on December 13th, the route will run twice a week and EasyJet expects to transport over eleven thousand passengers per year on that route alone. EasyJet UK commercial manager Hugh Aitken said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be launching our 16th destination from London Southend to Tenerife. It’s perfect for winter sun and we’re sure it will be a big hit with our customers from Southend and the wider region“. nearly two hundred unemployed residents of La Laguna are to be given temporary jobs, employed to perform tasks of public interest and to support municipal services. La Laguna Councillor responsible for planning, Blanca Perez, said that these contracts will run for a period of 6 months and “will be a major relief for many individuals and families in our town who are going through a difficult time”. The mayor added that, “although unfortunately we cannot hire all the unemployed people we would like to, at least this will be a major relief for many people who really need it, at a time when support for the realization of various projects of public interest and support for municipal services is essential”.

them by Loro Parque. After up to one year of being fed by their mother’s, they will start eating fish and become more independent. A competition to choose names for the pups is running on the park’s Facebook site; see www.loroparque.com or facebook.com/loroparque for more details. The Californian Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) belong to the species of seals and sea lions, specifically to the family of eared seals, and can be found on the coasts of the Northern Pacific Ocean. They are characterized by the great difference in size between males and females. While the males can reach between 300 – 380 kg,

the females weigh only 90 – 100 kg. They live on fish and molluscs and are the only mammals with lactose-free milk. They are very sociable and playful, living in numerous groups and interacting constantly.

L

ast month I wrote an article called “Witchcraft in Spain and the Canary Islands”, during my research I came across something which I felt deserved more attention, so I have returned to the subject of the “Santiguadores” a healing practice of witchcraft and witches exclusive to this Archipelago!

According to Spanishdict, an online Spanish/English translation site, the word Santiguadora literally means “one who cures by the sign of the cross”, here in the Canaries it’s the name given to “beneficial or healing witches”, a form of witchcraft that has been practised for centuries. It’s extremely difficult to find much information about this ancient art, many of the witches, especially when delving further into the past, never learned to read or write so there is little documentation available, most of the teachings are passed down orally, the elder generations sharing their knowledge to the younger generations, the potions and spells etc., taught by experienced witches and committed to memory by the young. The Añaga forest, which, as I’ve written about before is an area in the north that has several legends relating to witchcraft, covens and even human sacrifice, but with the Santiguadores, this area’s history with witches takes on a less sinister tone. In the forests of the Añaga Mountains it is said the most

Santiguadores - The Good Witches of the Canary Islands By Marc Craig

experienced healing witches reside, and many potential witches start their path to becoming witches by aiding these elders. The life of a Santiguadora is a simple one, they are often poor villagers, their use of witchcraft normally involve the banishing of evil spirits, which includes the

spiritual healing of illness and their own version of herbal medicine the preparation and treatment of healing potions made from often elaborate concoctions of various herbs. Interestingly, there is a clear divide between the roles of male and female Santiguadores; female witches usually manage the potions and spiritual healing, whilst male witches deal with bone and muscular issues as well as fending off evil spirits. A book (which unfortunately is no longer in print) called “Practice And Belief Of A Canarian Witch” by Domingo Garcia Barbuzano, documents the life of a Santiguadora known as Lugina. It describes her healing many patients with ailments such as Erysipela, a serious skin infection which can lead to Necrosis (the dying of tissue).

Healing Witches in other cultures Of course the Canary Islands aren’t the only place where local cultures use witchcraft for healing and the general good. The term “witch doctor” was used to describe English White Witches who used magic to cure long before it was associated with African tribal cults, nowadays the African Witch Doctor is actually a bad translation of the Zulu

word “Inyanga” misconstrued to mean “healer who uses witchcraft when it actually means “one who diagnoses and cures maladies caused by witches.” In African culture an Inyanga is a healer of injury and illness who provides magical items for everyday use. Witchcraft is often feared and mistrusted in Africa, leading to many accusations aimed at men, women and very often children. These accusations can often result in violent and abusive exorcisms. A much specialised form of black magic revolves around “penis snatching”, in which a sorcerer steals or shrinks said item for cash!!! Wicca, many may not realise is a very modern form

of witchcraft, only around since the early 20th century, it is a NeoPagan religion and healing, along with a peaceful harmonious, balanced way of life as well as a oneness with the Earth is very important to a Wiccan. As well as healing spells, Wiccans use gemstones and crystals to heal. Another term often associated with the darker side of magic is Voodoo with its Voodoo dolls and zombies, but Voodoo is also used for healing. There are 3 main religions that are usually referred to as Voodoo, Haitian Vodou, Louisiana or New Orleans Voodoo, and West African Vodun, all different but related religions. Haitian Vodou, was also known as Voodoo, but these days that

spelling is avoided due to the negative connotations associated with it. Vodouists believe in Bondye (literally the words good and god joined), a noninterfering deity. Vodouists pray to spirits called Loa, lesser entities that may grant wishes. Vodou practitioners use a combination of prayer, rites such as animal sacrifice, holistic medicine and herbal potions to cure ailments. So, next time you’re suffering from poor health and nothing your doctor gives you seems to help, or maybe you just need someone to “cut the sun” (to heal sunburn),why not go deep into the Añaga mountains and seek out a Santiguadora cure your ailments and make you well!

Tenerife Weekly - 27th September 2013 - 3rd October 2013

AronA has announced that it has managed to arrange for the Guaza market to be held on sunday, though on a different site in the town. At present, this still lacks Guardia Civil approval and an agreement between the organizers and the owners of the proposed site. this follows the news earlier in the week that Arona’s Mayor niño ordered the closure of Guaza car boot sale from last sunday, as a result of repeated pressure from the Guardia Civil concerning the illegality of the market and the lack of municipal licence.

Some 200 traders are set to camp outside Arona town hall in protest at the loss of part of their livelihood with the closure of the car boot sale. Arona Ayuntamiento, however, says that in the face of police threats of denuncias to the Courts it had no choice but to withdraw the “verbal permission” it had given for twelve years for the site to be used. Some would argue that the traders who are now protesting shouldn’t have had a “livelihood” from it to lose, and that as a “car boot sale” arrangement, rather than a market, it should have been for ad hoc sellers rather than market stallholders who should have had trading licences and paid stall fees. Some 150 out of the 200 traders are said to be “regulars”. This seems to have been part of

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly

arona mayor orders end to guaza car boot sale janetanscombe.com

the police argument: if people are “making a living” then it is being used as a business without the usual business requirements (social security, licences, etc.) being fulfilled.

As the police say, in brief, it’s an “illegal” market, illegal because it’s not supposed to be a “market”. Another large part of the problem is almost certainly police exasperation

with following up the many denuncias they received about thieving on the site, both from sellers and public alike – the market was notorious for the problem – and for the

number of stolen goods that were cleared through the site. Police say that in the case of a major denuncia against the illegal site, they themselves would be partly responsible in law because they would not have carried out necessary policing, but that in such an illegal site, normal policing is impossible. Under such police pressure, Arona Ayuntamiento didn’t have much choice other than to close the market. The last thing the council needs right now is another denuncia for anything!! Why the alternative of granting a licence couldn’t be arranged, either now or over the last 12 years, is not clear but plenty of reasons can be imagined, in Arona. At root of it all, however, appears to be a complete lack of regulatory bylaws in Arona concerning markets. As such, Los Cristianos market also is illegal. How long before the council closes that? It might make more sense to create such a regulatory framework as Adeje did only a fortnight ago for its own markets, but of course, Arona Ayuntamiento has its hands full right now with umpteen legal procedures against the ruling group for corruption which could yet see even the top of the tree in prison for several years.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero has spoken in Brussels at a conference organised by the Economic and Social Committee (EESC)

Rivero is seeking support to make the hiring of local workers a priority in the awarding of public tenders and explicit recognition that there must be a special plan for training and employment for young people in ultra-peripheral regions of the EU. The EESC had already approved a report entitled “The Outermost Regions: Intelligent Growth” last March (165 votes in favour, 2 against and 6 abstentions). The report contained a long list of recommendations to the European Commission to improve the way these regions fit into the Union, “giving it a strategic and ambitious dimension”. The Canarian President said “It is particularly important that the EESC support the Canary Islands on the matter of using a local workforce in the awarding of public tenders. “The Canary Islands government fully shares the views expressed by the EESC in its report on outermost

Rivero Pleads Canaries’ Case In Brussels regions ” said Rivero who went on “But at the moment support by the various European institutions is too lukewarm to enable them to make a firm commitment to the Outermost Regions” he advocated that both the European Commission and the European Parliament and Council should develop Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the Union “So that the Outermost Regions have a differentiated policy regarding continental territories”. “Europe lacks the courage and determination to adequately address the phenomenon of the outermost regions,” said Rivero, “the outermost regions are not such a great burden against the total European population and support of specific measures applicable to them does not imply an imbalance for European budgets.” “On the contrary, these regions

have important strategic geographical positions for the developement of Europe. The Canarian President conclud-

by saying that if the higher, unhealthy levels are not found in the city as a whole, i.e. if not measured at more than one station, there is no need to sound the alarm, although they say, they do take steps to reduce the levels . The director of Environmental Protection Agency of the Canarian Government, Jose Fernandez , has confirmed to the Spanish press that the Agency has imposed a reduction of SO2 emissions

of between 22 and 29 per cent on Cepsa, after the legal limit was exceeded in 2011, in the area of the municipal swimming pool. Fernandez admits that the criteria for evaluating S02 pollution in the city, “are what the Ministry themselves have set, because there must be criteria, though, like everything else, the law is open to interpretation”, he goes on, “this is not an exact science, it is better to measure pollution

at critical points to focus on the values themselves“, he added. The Canarian Government’s own department of Public Health has linked the S02 levels at the refinery to an increase in deaths from cardiorespiratory disease, although Cepsa contests this conclusion. Fernandez has been quoted as saying “there is no need to alarm citizens”. The public, we suggest, should follow their own noses regarding the matter.

Anyone who has ever visited Santa Cruz can attest the city has a certain smell to it; it originates at the oil refinery. But what is less widely known, is the pollution measuring stations located in Tenerife’s capital have recorded 381 instances of sulphur dioxide (SO2) exceeding the legal limit for an hour or more in just under a decade.

The limit is set at 350 micrograms per cubic meter of air, which is the upper safe limit according to the European Commission, and in accordance with scientific knowledge, to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of this gas on human health and the environment.

Legislation allows for this limit to be exceeded only 24 times a year, but what is not clear is how to evaluate whether the yearly limit has been breached or not. The Ministry of the Environment states in their Air Quality Plan; “If a single station [there are around a dozen measuring SO2 in Santa Cruz] exceeds the legal limit then the whole area of the city is considered to have failed the test, even if there are some stations that record measurements within the legal requirements.“ Applying this principle you would think that every time a level of more than 350 micrograms is recorded counts as one of the 24 times per year limit. But that is not how the Refinery or the Canarian Department of the Environment calculates things; they say there have

to be 24 violations from one testing station. When questioned by the Spanish press, neither the Ministry nor the Canarian Government have been able to explain exactly when it would be necessary to issue a public health warning about the gas. The Ministry and the Refinery quote the European Directive on safety warnings, i.e., the presence of 500 micrograms per cubic meter over a three hour period, at locations representative of air quality over 100 square kilometers. The reality is that the 500 level over three hours means even a brief exposure to the gas, poses a risk to human health that affects the whole population. That has happened 11 times in the last decade. Cepsa has defended itself

Los Cristianos Beach became the place to be on Friday night, as an open air cinema opened under the light of the moon.

With the screening of the film “El Diario de Noa”, the Department of tourism which is promoting this project, came up with a few surprises for those who came to the screening; one couple were presented with a romantic night

with half board at the Spring Arona Gran, and 5 pairs of tickets were given to the first 50 people, courtesy of the multiplexes Zentral Center. Scheduled sessions will continue on Saturday 28 with the film Wall-E and on Saturday, October 5th, with a selection of classic short silent films with lots of humour and again the evening will be full of more surprises.

Chef Domingo Martín was in charge of a team preparing tasty titbits using local produce, and showing everyone how versatile and delicious gofio is. There was also a honey display section celebrating many different kinds of honey and the local black bees were in attendance too. Esther Rivero Vargas, the councillor with responsibility for the Farmers’ Market, said it was a great event. “The Farmers’ Market has

again opened its doors to DegustaMe with this wonderful show cooking event and a honey tasting, a product that can also be found on sale here in the market every weekend. Yet again we are working to strengthen the offer of local producers and we extend the invitation to everyone to come along and enjoy the produce on offer.” She added a special note of thanks to the Crianza association for organising the honey

tasting and giving the public a chance to see a video explaining the honey production process and information on the Canarian black bee. What was also welcome was to overhear many local ex-pat residents enthusiastically explaining, in English and French and German to their guests and visitors what the event was all about (gofio for instance, which is so typical of here) and introducing them to local produce.

Soldier finds Loophole in ioS 7 dianamcglone.com A soLDIEr stationed in the Canary Islands has discovered a major security flaw that allows the lock screen of Apple’s new ios 7 operating system to be circumvented.

The soldier, José Rodriguez, shared a video on You-

Tube to prove he had discovered the flaw. http://youtu. be/tTewm0V_5tsifone. The fault allows you to access the device’s camera interface, but with the ability to scroll through all of the owner’s photos, not just the ones shot in the time since the ‘phone was last locked. Not only can you scroll

through the photos, but once you’re in you can also tap on the share button to send photos out via email or social channels like Twitter or Facebook. Whilst this is not ‘hijacking’ those accounts in the accepted sense, there is potential for embarrassment if sensitive photos get stolen and shared through social networking sites. Jose Rodriguez has a history of discovering these tricky bypass methods. His secret? Plenty of time waiting in cars, his former job was a driver for government officials. Note that this vulnerability is very easy to prevent. Just visit Settings>Control Centre and toggle off ‘Access on Lock Screen’ to rectify the problem.

oAsIs restaurant, hauche cafeteria and optica Downes are three local Adeje companies who have actively worked with social services to help families in need in the borough. englishtimeadeje.com The mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and the councillor for welfare, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, recently met with representatives from the three businesses in the council offices. Optica Downes have been ready and willing to help people with discounts for those who need glasses but maybe cannot afford full price. Another plus here is that the optician speaks fluent English, so no need to worry about having to do an eye test in Spanish, or explain your particular problem. Both the Hauche cafeteria and the Oasis Restaurant have been busy donating meals to families in need once a week. According to councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, these companies are actively helping to improve our society and work for a common good, helping those close at hand as well

as institutions and organisations in the borough. This is one way of getting help directly to those who need it most. For the mayor, this level of local assistance, “by which local businessmen and women in Adeje are working to help families most in need enriches our society; people helping people. Gestures of these kind make Adeje great”, he said, with people understanding the difficult times in which we live and the need for help at local level. “I offer my sincere gratitude for this help and invite other companies to participate in this project, because helping others has its own rewards”, the mayor added. Representatives of the three companies in question were unanimous in stating that they were delight to help, and to work towards a better society for all.

dianamcglone.com thE Provincial Prosecutor has issued a formal complaint against the mayor of santiago del teide, Juan Damián Gorrín, for giving a municipal telecommunications services contract to the servicios Electrónicos sL company, without putting the work out to tender.

The irregular arrangement included the quid-pro-quo installation of some equipment for use by the local police at the Roque Arguayo station, valued at 42,000 euros. The public prosecutor contends that the local authority “shows no record of any agreement or resolution reached to grant this business the contract for the management and exploitation of the station. “The Mayor has quite consciously circumnavigated legal requirements by signing an agreement with the company in clear contravention of legal principles and the tender process” said the prosecutor. “The Telecommunications antennas at Roque Arguayo, managed by Electronic Services, are located

The Councillor of social services of Arona, Clara María Pérez, visited María at her home to join in the party to congratulate her on such pleasant event. Although María has reached this landmark, she is still singing, something that her whole family enjoys, a family that consists of brothers, children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great, great grandPhoto: ©Daniel L. www.tenerife-weekly.com thE weather should start to cool down just a little in october. With average temperatures around 23°C - 24°C during the day and 17°C once the sun has set. After the long dry summer locals are hoping for a little rain but there is no guarantee they will see it in the south, although anyone visiting the north will find if not rain, then low cloud most days which manages to keep the air moist enough to give the plants and grass a drink, hence visitors are often told the north of the island is green and verdant while the south is dry and arid.

anaga to become unesco Biosphere reserve janetanscombe.com

tEnErIFE already has internationally recognized locations, whether the teide national Park, a World heritage site, or La Laguna, a Unesco World Cultural and heritage site, and it will soon have another. the proposal for the Anaga rural Park to become a new Biosphere reserve has been backed by the spanish committee for Unesco’s Man and Bio-

sphere Programme, an intergovernmental scientific project which aims to establish a scientific base to improve global human and environment relations. Anaga is already one of Tenerife’s “Essentials”, occupying much of the mountainous massif of northeast Tenerife. It extends to some 14,419 hectares, so is a substantial part of the Island, and one of exceptional beauty. Its natural habitats include some of the best

Canarian ecosystems, most notably the laurel forests and juniper woodlands. In this respect, it’s on a par with the tertiary era Garajonay forest of La Gomera, the whole of which is itself a Unesco Biosphere Reserve – as are La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as around a third of Gran Canaria. Anaga clearly well deserves inclusion in this list, and it now just remains for the proposal to be presented to Unesco’s International Coordination Council in Paris, which meets next Spring.

facts every woman over 40 should know about fat loss

stILL staying this week, with the Forever Living Clean 9 detox and weight loss theme, we are going to look to look at some facts every woman over 40 should know: • The average woman gains between 12 and 15 pounds between the ages of 40 and 55 years. • At 40+ you store fat more easily. As your ovaries produce less oestrogen, your body attempts to find the hormone elsewhere. One place it can find it is within fat cells, so the body becomes better equipped at converting excess calories into body fat. • At 40+ your metabolic rate decreases - your metabolism slows by 5% each decade. This means that, compared to age 25, you’ll burn about 100 fewer calories a day at 35 and 200 fewer at 45. It might not sounds like much but be warned, do nothing and you could wind up weighing up to 20 pounds more a year! • 40+ your appetite increases. According to a recent study conducted at Oregon Health and Science University, the natural drop in oestrogen and pro-

gesterone production that occurs around this age can increase your appetite by up to 67%. • 40+ you gain more weight around your middle. Oestrogen generally directs fat stores in women to the hip and thigh area. However, ‘middle aged spread’ occurs as the decrease in the production of this hormone results in excess weight depositing around your tummy area instead. This can be bad news for your health too because abdominal fat increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and heart disease. • 40+ you burn off fewer calories. Research shows hormonal changes leading

to breast soreness, bloating, hot flushes, insomnia and chronic tiredness can all result in women becoming far less inclined to exercise around this time of life. With Christmas coming and that little black dress beckoning – isn’t it time to start thinking about your own body and how you feel and look. The Forever Living 9 day programme will detox your system and prepare it ready for you to start a cleaner, healthier lifestyle. Judith from Origins Gym at Pearly Grey has had an amazing response to our previous articles and now has a number of ladies who have joined the Clean 9 programme with Judith as their mentor. Next week, one lady participant to share her Clean 9 experience with us.

According to the mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga the cutbacks made throughout all the departments have seen the council bring the borough back to stability a year ahead of plan, and he says that they can now start to look at improving a number of local services. “Measures taken were effective, from better control of spending in all areas, the suspension, for instance, of Sun-

englishtimeadeje.com day rubbish collection, use of more efficient energy methods, reducing in leasing arrangements, the elimination of health insurance for administrative workers etc. The cuts were worth the effort and have allowed us achieve our economic objectives and guarantee fundamental services as well as now improving others. While the mayor mentioned his satisfaction at the good economic showing of all the council’s departments he said he was particularly pleased with the behaviour of Adeje’s residents, with a very high local tax payment rate. MAINLAND NEWS IN BRIEF spain’s state rail company says 22 people suffered minor injuries when a commuter train crashed into another train in a station in the north eastern city of Barcelona. RENFE spokesman Antonio Carmona says the collision occurred in Sants station at 10:05 a.m. (0805 GMT) last Friday when the passenger train collided with another that was stopped. He says 22 people reported that they had suffered bruises but that only 10 needed treatment and none was hospitalised. Carmona says the cause of the collision is not yet known.

A record 8.3 million foreign tourists flocked to Spain in August, with British, French and German holidaymakers taking the lead. It was the highest monthly number of foreign tourists to Spain since current records began in 1995 and 7.1% higher than August last year, the tourism ministry said in a statement. The number was swelled by foreign sunseekers avoiding Egypt and Turkey - popular budget holiday destinations hit by civil unrest this year - the ministry said. In Spain, the northeastern region of Catalonia - with its beaches and the cultural sites of Barcelona - benefitted most, with 2.3 million foreigners heading there. A record number of mobile phone users in Spain switched service providers in July, hitting big operators such as Telefonica as the recession spurred customers into looking for cheaper deals, according to new figures published on Monday. Telefonica and Vodafone lost out to smaller competitors Orange, Yoigo and virtual operators, which rent and sell on network capacity from established operators. 638,948 clients’ switched operator, up almost 50% on the same month in 2012, helping Orange, Yoigo and virtual operators catch up with the bigger players, according to the industry regulator, the CMT. Operators are slashing prices and offering bundled packages including mobile, fixed line, internet and television services to attract new clients. Orange now has 22.8% of the mobile market, compared with 20.9% in July 2012, while Yoigo’s market share increased to 6.6% from 5.8%. Virtual operators grew their market share to 11.1% in July from 7.8% a year before. Telefonica’s market share fell to 34.4% from 37.6% a year earlier, while Vodafone’s slice of the market shrank to 25.2% from 27.9%. spain’s national Police have arrested a British couple, resident in Coín in southern Spain, for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the UK in a removals van. Various electrical appliances and sofa cushions were stuffed with marijuana and hashish. The investigation was started after police were informed of the presence of a British couple, who were apparently involved in bringing large quantities of drugs into Spain, for later distribution internationally. The Coín property occupied by the man and woman, aged 48 and 47, was thought to be a “safe house” where the marijuana and hashish were received and prepared for distribution. Police raided the property in Coín at the end of August, and discovered 90 kilos of marihuana and 78 kilos of hashish, hidden inside electrical appliances and pieces of furniture which were to be transported to the UK by road. Packets of drugs were found inside various appliances, including a dishwasher, dryer, a fridge and a television set. Sofa cushions had also been stuffed with drugs.

Home Built in a day LoADED up on the back of a lorry, it looks like a shed. But this portable home, which can be set up in just one day, is a luxury home with a living room, full bathroom and a double bedroom.

The tiny home, which can be set up anywhere, is only 290 square feet, but has everything two people would need in a house. The mini house was developed by Spanish architecture studio Ábaton, who constructed the 11ft-tall house almost entirely out of recyclable materials. The architects told online design magazine urdesign.it that, although the house is extremely small, they researched the layout so that the different spaces still felt recognisable and distinct from one another. The unit, named the Casa Transportable ÁPH80, takes less than six weeks to make, and takes less than 24 hours to put together. The tiny house includes a combined kitchen and living space, furnished by design firm Batavia, which has in-built shelving and storage cupboards. Although the cement-board panels outside are a depressing grey, the interior surfaces are made of smooth, pale wood, which the architects say is even hypoallergenic. The glass patio door opens onto an open living area letting in a huge amount of natural light when the front cement panel is removed during the set-up process. There is a fully functional bathroom, and a bedroom, which has a built-in wardrobe and enough space for a double-bed. The tiny portable house is the latest in a trend that has seen more and more people move away from traditional houses to more efficient variants.

Juan Carlos no plans to abdicate

KInG Juan Carlos has “at no time” considered abdicating despite undergoing yet more surgery to replace a prosthetic hip. this will be his eighth operation in just over three years. he had the operation on wednesday.

It is the latest in a string of blows for the 75-year-old king, who walks with a crutch and has appeared increasingly frail in recent months, all the while weathering corruption scandals that have damaged his popularity. The head of the royal household Rafael Spottorno told a news conference: “The king has at no time considered abdication,” despite being examined by doctors over recent weeks due to pain in

his left hip, he added. Doctors said the monarch will require between two and six months to recover from the operation to replace the prosthetic hip that he received in November 2012. “Treatment of an infected prosthesis is always through surgery. It consists of replacing the prosthesis,” said Miguel Cabanela, a top Spanish orthopaedic surgeon from the Mayo Clinic in the United States, who performed the operation. “His majesty’s general health is much better than average for patients of his age whom I have operated on. He is a very vigorous man, he takes very little medication,” he added. Juan Carlos gained huge respect for steering Spain to democracy after the death of dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975, and helping

to quell an attempted military coup in 1981. But the royal family’s image has suffered due to a corruption scandal implicating his youngest daughter Cristina, whose tax affairs are being investigated by a judge, and an expensive elephanthunting holiday which he took in Botswana last year. The king’s son-in-law, Cristina’s husband Inaki Urdangarin, has been under investigation since late 2011 for alleged embezzlement. While the corruption scandal gained momentum, Juan Carlos broke his hip during the secret African hunting trip and had to be flown home for medical care at a time when one in four Spaniards was out of work. He issued a public apology after his return, an unprecedented move for a Spanish

king, but the affair increased calls for him to abdicate in favour of his 45-year-old-son, Prince Felipe, the youngest of three children he has with Queen Sofia. The king had both of his hips replaced last year after his hunting trip. His most recent operation was in March when he underwent back surgery to treat a slipped disc. Nearly six in 10 Spaniards (56,9%) feel Juan Carlos should abdicate to make way for his son, according to a poll published in March. Despite his operations and opinion polls showing his popularity plunged last year, the king insisted in a televised interview in January to mark his 75th birthday that he had “energy and hope” to continue ruling. In April he joked that he would “soon be back causing trouble” during his first official appearance since his back operation. The king made an official visit to Morocco in July but he began having pain again in his left hip at the start of September, “which became fairly evident in his public appearances”, Spottorno said. The king had a benign tumour removed from a lung in May 2010. In 2011 he was given an artificial right knee and had a torn Achilles tendon repaired. He has had 12 operations in total since his first surgery in 1954 in Tangiers to

Tougher Piracy Missing Laws For Spain Millionaire

Tough new rules on internet piracy are one of the key features of Spain’s new penal code to be approved in the country’s parliament. The new rules mean possible sentences of six years in prison for people linked to ‘pirated’ material such as films or music on their webpage.

End users won’t be punished under the new regime but judges will also be able to order offending sites to remove their content. In some cases, authorities will even be able to block those sites. The rule changes are designed to help stem endemic piracy in Spain. Market-research firm Nielsen in 2012 estimated some 45% of Spain’s internet users visit pages offering links to pirated music and film material on a regular basis, compared to around 25% in the biggest European markets, according to US Billboard magazine. But while Spanish legal experts welcome the tougher new rules, there are still con-

cerns. “The regulation of links is complicated and its practical application can cause a lot of problems,” Carolina Pina, intellectual property expert with Spain’s Garrigues law firm, told El País. “It can hurt businesses or limit the development of the information society,” said Pina, who suggested legislators needed to “follow the money”. David Velázquez at Cuatrecasas said the new laws weren’t clear enough, and would make life difficult for the courts. To prove that a crime was committed “it is necessary to show that there is a significant breach of intellectual property rights”, he said. “But how is

that level going to be set in court? What volume will be required for a crime?” The lawyer also said that proving a crime had taken place would mean demonstrating page administrators had intended to make money. He argued, however, that this would be difficult to establish. “The legislative tools have been improved but there are still gaps,” Velázquez told El País. Spain’s new penal code also includes provision for ‘permanent revisable’ prison sentences for criminals charged with “serious” crimes including the killing of children, serial murders, and murders committed for an organized crime network.

The ticket for the June 30, 2012, draw was found in one of the city’s authorized lottery agency outlets by another customer, who handed it to the manager of the store. The manager informed authorities, who are now publicising the story in the hope that they can trace the winner. The city this week released an official notice about the ticket on its website list of lost-andfound items such as mobile phones, keys and wallets. Many people in Spain play their own series of numbers, so people will also be questioned about their lottery playing history and what numbers they usually choose. However, it’s also possible that the ticket purchaser paid for a ticket with random numbers generated by the lottery machine. “I’ll be the first Spanish mayor who’s searching for a millionaire not to ask for money but to give it,” La Coruña Mayor Carlos Negreira joked in a statement. Authorities will not say where the ticket was two days after European Commission competition regulator Joaquin Almunia said the EU was concerned over the economically powerful region’s independence push and warned that is a part of an EU member state secedes “the segregated part is not an EU member”. Recently hundreds of thousands of Catalans formed a 400-kilometre (250-mile) human chain, demanding a referendum on breaking away from Spain. “Barcelona World” is due to start being built south of Barcelona during the first half of next year with the opening scheduled for mid2016. Meanwhile a rival mega-

Like many Spanish cities, La Coruña has dozens of lottery outlets. La Coruña, population 246,000, is an international tourism destination, so the ticket could also very well have been bought by a visitor. Prizes for small Spanish lottery winnings can be claimed at lottery agencies, but bigger amounts like the jackpot for the lost ticket have to be claimed at regional lottery headquarters. La Coruña is required by law to try to find the winner: An 1889 Spanish statute states that municipalities must safeguard lost winning lottery tickets and make every effort to find the legitimate buyer. The search could last for up to two years — and if the owner of the ticket doesn’t show up in that time, the jackpot goes to the person who found it.

casino project dubbed “Eurovegas” planned for near Madrid by US billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands was in doubt due to a 2011 law which bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces, including bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Adelson has been pressuring the Spanish government to exempt the “Eurovegas” project from the anti-tobacco law, one of the strictest in Europe, but this has been fiercely opposed by antismoking campaigners. “We run the risk that it will go elsewhere if we don’t regulate right now the legal question regarding smoking,” the president of the regional government of Ma-

drid, Ignacio Gonzalez, said Tuesday amid reports that Adelson was thinking of changing the location of the project to Tokyo which just beat Madrid in the race for the 2020 Olympics. The Eurovegas project is backed by Spain’s ruling conservative Popular Party, which has said that it is considering bending its tobacco law to let guests smoke inside the Madrid mega-casino project. “We are open to dialogue and it is for this reason we are searching for formulas that would make the necessary protection of health compatible with the creation of jobs,” Health Minister Ana Mato said.

A spanish judge has charged the president of Adif , the company in charge of spain’s rail infrastructure and his two predecessors in connection with a train derailment that killed 79 people in July. the three men are among 30 current and former leaders of the company, who were charged this week over “a serious lack of action” on security issues, under a judicial inquiry into the accident.

kind handbag in their own time and from the comfort of their own home. The handbag will be revealed at the launch of Hermès’ Esencia del Cuero exhibition which will be open to the public until 13 October at the Galeria de Cristal at Palacio de Correos, Madrid. This exhibition follows those held in Shanghai, Rome and London and celebrates Hermès’ relationship with leather. The Handbag Originally created by Henri d’Origny in 1975, the ‘Passe-Guide’ remains one of the most sought-after handbags. Couli Jobert’s stunning and unexpected one-off is hand-made using time-honoured techniques in the Hermès workshop in Paris, where one craftsman has made each bag from start to finish.

Current Adif president Gonzalo Ferre has been summoned to appear before Judge Luis Alaez on October 10, and his predecessors Enrique Verdeguer and Antonia Gonzalez Martin on December 11, according to the court ruling. The eight-carriage train was hurtling around a bend at 179km/h, more than twice the speed limit, when it flew off the tracks near the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela on July 24, according to its data-recording “black boxes”. The driver, 52-year-old Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, was on

the telephone to the on-board conductor and stopped speaking just 11 seconds before the train flew off the tracks and ploughed into a concrete siding, coming to rest in a mangled heap. Garzon has been provisionally charged with 79 counts of reckless homicide. Judge Alaez criticised the disconnection of the advanced European Rail Traffic Management System on the stretch of railway, which would implement automatic braking if the speed limit was exceeded. The tracks were however run under the standard Spanish ASFA system “without demanding or adopting any measures of additional security ... to try and compensate for this obvious lack of security on a highspeed railway segment.” ASFA will only put in place an emergency brake if the train passes a signal at the time at which it is speeding. The judge said the Adif leaders “allowed this situation to endure until the accident, with a serious risk for people’s life.” Adif and the state company that runs the trains, Renfe, have both denied any technical failings and said correct procedures were followed.

final pink goodbye for april

t

hE funeral of April Jones took place in the murdered schoolgirl’s home town in mid-Wales. A white horse-drawn cortege carried mourners including the five-year-olds parents from her Machynlleth home to st Peter’s Church. Mourners were asked to wear pink, April’s favourite colour.

It is almost a year to the day since the five-year-old went missing, her murderer, Mark Bridger, was jailed

for his entire life in May, but are reminders of the youngster visible throughout the town. A memorial garden has been built on the estate of Bryn y Gog, close to the home where she lived throughout her brief life. Pink has been used extensively. A bench bearing her name has been placed among the trees and next to a pink playhouse. Up in the Welsh hills overlooking her hometown, a tree has been intricately wrapped in knitted pink patches and below in the valley pink ribbons still adorn many of the shop fronts and houses. But the town is different now according to Councillor Mike Williams, a friend and neighbour of April’s family: “It’s the magnitude of an event in which a five-year-old girl was ripped from her family, ripped from the community, in such a vile and vicious way. But the town has stayed together and together we will be. We will be as one and we will be always with the family in support.” April Jones’ funeral reflected the wishes of her grieving parents Paul and Coral, who had wondered for months whether it would even be possible as their daughter’s body was never found apart from fragments of bone. Two poems by a local writer - one

called April and the other called An Autumn Night - were read during the service in the parish church, and the words of well-known hymns changed to suit the family. Vicar Kathleen Rogers said before the service: “This is a huge thing for Paul and Coral. They need to be able to say goodbye to their daughter and this service will hopefully enable them to do that. Hopefully it will be a closing of this particular chapter. Another chapter will now open as they now start to grieve privately. Hopefully this service will help them a little bit on this horrendous journey that they’re on.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com The prosecution has said the guilty pleas entered by the two women arrested trying to smuggle 11kg (24lbs) of cocaine out of Peru will not be accepted.

Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, and Melissa Reid, from Glasgow, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in front of a judge on Tuesday. But anti-narcotics prosecutor Juan Rosas said on Wednesday that as the women only claimed partial guilt for their actions, the pleas would not be accepted by the prosecution. Mr Rosas said that in order for proceedings to be concluded quickly both women must accept full responsibility for the charges against them: “A new statement is required by the women and they will have to admit not only that they came here to traffic drugs but also that they did not tell the truth with respect to them being kidnapped, they have to make a full admission of responsibility for all of the charges brought by the prosecution,” he said. The prosecution maintains that McCollum and Reid made up a story about being kidnapped and threatened into attempt to smuggle the drugs, worth £1.5m, out of Peru on August 6. Mr Rosas added: “If they continue to maintain this incredible version of events then the prosecution is not going to accept them taking advantage of a quick conclusion of proceedings.”

Peru Pair Guilty Plea Not Accepted

The women entered the plea at a closed hearing in Callao, adjacent to Lima, Judge Pedro Miguel Puente set a court hearing for October 1 at which the two women could be sentenced, a court spokesman said. He said that McCollum and Reid would face a minimum of six years and eight months in prison following the guilty plea. It had earlier been suggested that this reduced sentence, the charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years, could be served in the UK. The spokesman also said the women offered details on their coconspirators during the hearing. When they were arrested, McCollum was 20 and Reid was 19 and they had been living on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza. Reid’s parents insisted last week they still believed their daughter had been forced to carry the drugs, but a guilty plea was the best course of action to get her back to the UK.

Cavern Club Up For Sale

The Cavern Club in Liverpool, the famous haunt where the Fab Four played nearly 300 times, has gone up for sale. It was the launch pad for the Beatles’ phenomenal musical

23

career, demolished in 1973 only to be built again next door as a working venue once more.

The club forms part of the Cavern Walks Shopping Centre in the centre of the city, which has been put on the

market with a guide price of £1million for the whole centre. It has been offered for sale by owners Warner Estate, who filed for administration in August, The Times reported. The club was frequented

by the Fab Four in the early 1960s, before they shot to international fame. The venue would pay them just £3, 15 shillings per gig. They played there mainly with drummer Pete Best, as Ringo Starr had yet to join the band. It was not a licensed venue, so only sold soft drinks and food while acts were playing, and was popular with teenagers. The early gigs also played host to a very different band than the one which would come to dominate pop music. In those days the boys wore leather jackets and blue jeans - which almost got George Harrison kicked out of the club for breaching the dress code. They would also swear, smoke and eat on stage, and sometimes stop mid-song - stark contrast to the slick

and clean image that later propelled them to stardom. John Lennon later said of the years playing the club: ‘In those old Cavern days, half the thing was just ad lib, what you’d call comedy. We just used to mess about, jump into the audience, do anything.’ The club was also where the band was discovered by manager Brian Epstein, who managed their climb to fame and helped develop their signature style. The original club was eventually demolished in 1973 to make way for a railway development, but was re-founded in the 1980s on almost the exact same site with many of the original bricks. The club which helped foster The Beatles’ career also played host to other classic acts in the 1960s and 1970s,

including the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, The Kinks and The Who. The site was left dormant until it was bought in 1984 by Liverpool football player Tommy Smith, and a new version of the Cavern club was swiftly open. The new club, built deeper underground than the original, occupies 75% of the original site, and was rebuilt using 15,000 bricks saved from the demolition. The club closed due to financial pressures in 1989, but was reopened in 1991 by two locals, who continue to run the club today, where live music plays most nights. Today’s pop royalty have picked up the baton of performing there - acts including Adele, Jessie J and The Wanted have played there in recent years.

pay to play - new guidelines for industry

nEW guidelines drawn up by the office of Fair trading has warned the online games industry against pressuring children to “pay to play”, following an investigation that found some games included “potentially unfair and aggressive commercial practices to which children may be particularly susceptible”.

Investigators found some games implied the player would somehow be letting other players or characters down if they did not buy content. Other games blurred the distinction between spending virtual currency and real money, and used statements or images to encourage children to make a purchase. The OFT said such practices were likely to breach consumer protection law, and companies in the market needed to make changes to ensure they were fully complying with their legal obligations. Its draft proposals say payments made by children while playing games online will not be deemed authorised, and should not be taken, unless the account holder, has given their informed

consent. And they state that consumers should be told up front about the potential cost of playing the games and any other important information such as whether their personal details will be shared with third parties. The OFT launched its investigation in April amid concerns users could run up substantial costs paying for content such as upgraded membership or virtual currency in forms including coins, gems or fruit. Typically, players can access only certain areas of these games for free and must pay for higher levels or features. OFT executive director Cavendish Elithorn said: “This is a new and innovative industry that has grown very rapidly in recent years, but it needs to ensure it is treating consumers fairly and that children are protected. The way the sector has worked with us since we launched our investigation is encouraging and we’ve already seen some positive changes to its practices. “These principles provide a clear benchmark for how games makers should be operating. Once they are finalised, we will expect the industry to follow them, or risk enforcement action.” Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, called for the guidelines to back strong enforcement: “It’s good to see that the OFT are considering action to make games include clear information on costs, and require authorisation for the account holder before children can make inapp purchases. The final rules must be backed up by strong enforcement action to ensure that consumers are properly protected.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com According to the charity Diabetes UK, the UK is on the road to a “public health disaster” as the NHS is facing a “huge strain” with not enough being done to prevent Type 2 diabetes.

The number of people with the condition is expected to hit five million by 2025 - up from 3.8 million today, because people do not take it seriously enough or make the right lifestyle changes. The charity claims that less than a third of people realise that Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications such as amputation, heart attack, blindness and stroke. Type 2 diabetes patients either do not produce enough insulin or the insulin they produce does not work properly. Roughly 85% of diabetes sufferers have Type 2, but it can be treated with exercise and an improved diet. Type 1 cannot produce any insulin, is not caused by obesity and cannot be cured. Diabetes UK has launched a national awareness campaign to have the risk of Type 2 diabetes assessed. Chief executive Barbara Young said: “You only have to spend five minutes talking to someone who has lost their sight or has lost a leg as a result of

Type 2 Diabetes “Public Health Disaster”

End Of The Road For The Camper Van

I

t was a favourite for hippies through the 1960s, taking surfers in search of waves and is popular for moving materials in the developing world, but now the journey of the Volkswagen (VW) Camper van is coming to an end.

The company is to cease production in Brazil, the only place in the world that still produces the iconic “bus” as it is known - at the end of the year. VW said it had decided it could not change production to meet new laws being imposed in the South American country which meant all new vehicles must have air bags and anti-lock braking sys-

tems from 2014. While output will halt in Brazil, over 10 million Volkswagen Transporter vans were made globally over the past 63 years and they remain popular because of their retro look and the “back-to-basics” driving experience they offer compared with modern vans. Damon Ristau, director of the documentary The Bus, which follows

VW fanatics and their affections for the machine, said: “The van represents freedom. It has a magic and charm lacking in other vehicles. It’s about the open road, about bringing smiles to people’s faces when they see an old VW van rolling along.” Perhaps no other vehicle has driven itself deeper into American and European pop culture than the VW, known for its durability, but also its tendency to break down. Van lovers say its failures only reinforce its charm. Because its engine is so simple, it’s easy to fix, imparting a deeper sense of ownership. The van made an appearance on Bob Dylan and Beach Boys record album covers, and is most closely linked to the Grateful Dead and the legion of touring fans that followed the rock group across the US, the machines serving as rolling homes. Legend has it that Steve Jobs is said to have sold his van in the 1970s to buy a circuit board as he built a computer that helped launch Apple.

Type 2 diabetes to realise the devastating impact the condition can have. “But this survey makes it clear that most people do not understand the potential consequences of developing it, and I worry that until we finally lay to rest the myth that Type 2 diabetes is a mild condition, it will continue to be seen as something that is not worth being concerned about. This is a misconception that is wrecking lives and is the reason that as a country we are sleepwalking towards a public health disaster of an almost unimaginable scale.” Losing weight, eating more fruit and vegetables, and exercising can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. A Department of Health spokesman said: “The number of people with diabetes is steadily growing, with often devastating consequences for their health. We are helping people make healthier choices to help prevent obesity which can lead to Type 2 diabetes. “By working with industry we have helped to reduce fat, sugar and salt in foods, and thanks to the Change4Life campaign we are targeting more and more children and families with information on how to eat well, move more and live longer.”

It has also been linked to the California surf scene, its cavernous interior perfect for hauling boards. But in poorer regions like Latin American and Africa, the vehicle doesn’t carry the same romantic appeal. In Brazil it is known as the “Kombi,” an abbreviation for the German “Kombinationsfahrzeug” that loosely translates as “cargopassenger van.” It is used there by the postal service to move mail, by the army to transport soldiers and by funeral directors to carry bodies. It serves as a school bus for children, operates as a group taxi and delivers construction materials to building sites. Brazilians even convert their vans into rolling food carts, setting up on street corners for working-class lunchtime crowds. Production in Germany was halted in 1979 because the van no longer met European safety requirements, meaning its future was dependent on operations in South America.

not Bra Wars

BrItAIn’s biggest department store chains are to be investigated over suggestions they colluded with a bra manufacturer to fix prices. the office of Fair trading (oFt) alleged that the manufacturer of the shockAbsorber range, DB Apparel UK, entered into nine anti-competitive agreements with John Lewis, Debenhams and house of Fraser between 2008 and 2011.

The trading watchdog has requested a response to the claims from the four companies. It said it believed they infringed competition law by entering into resale price maintenance deals that set a fixed or minimum resale price on products within the sports bra range across the country. The OFT said that during the three years in question the Shock-Absorber range, once advertised in a campaign featuring tennis player Anna Kournikova with the slogan “Only the ball should bounce”, had a market share

of about 15%. Ann Pope, the regulator’s senior director of services, said: “The OFT takes allegations of price-fixing seriously. Resale price maintenance limits competition between retailers and can lead to consumers paying higher prices. We will carefully consider the parties’ representations to the OFT’s Statement of Objections before deciding whether competition law has in fact been broken.” House of Fraser was the first of the retailers to release a statement in response to the allegations: “We are co-operating fully with the Office of Fair Trading and the on-going investigation and

will respond accordingly. We are confident that we have been operating within all laws and regulations and are very supportive of any initiative which ensures pricing policies are fair for our customers.” Debenhams said: “Debenhams Plc disputes these provisional findings of the OFT but is not in a position to comment further at this stage. The matter is being dealt with by its external lawyers,” it added. John Lewis only said: “John Lewis always strives to operate within the law and comply with regulations. We are fully cooperating with the OFT and will respond in due course.”

every Little Helps – tesco Launches the Hudl

sUPErMArKEt chain tesco has launched its challenge to the iPad and the Kindle with its own tablet computer, the hudl. the Androidoperated, seven-inch device is priced at £119, cheaper than its Apple counterpart but level with the Google and Kindle offerings.

It has a high-definition widescreen display, nine hours of video battery life, and 16GB of memory, which can be extended to 48GB. It comes in a range of four colours, goes on sale in 1,000 Tesco stores and on the website on Monday September 30th. Its closest competitor on the market is the Kindle Fire, which retails at £99. I also has a seven-inch screen, and nine-hour battery life, but only has 8GB of storage. The iPad mini has a 7.9-inch screen and prices start at £269, but, like the Hudl, has 16GB of memory. Company chief executive Philip Clarke promised the Hudl was the first stage of its entry into the tablet market, making a thinly veiled jab at the more expensive competitors by saying: “The digital revolution

should be for the many, not for the few.” The Hudl has an in-built Tesco launcher button, which allows users to shop, see their Clubcard points, watch movies on Tesco’s Blinkbox system, and listen to music. It also has a range of in-built apps, including YouTube and Google Chrome, and users can download new apps on Google Play. The tablet comes in black, blue, red and purple, has wifi, Bluetooth and a micro HDMI port. Mr Clarke said: “Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited. We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen

tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK.” Tesco said that the Hudl had been designed from scratch taking into account what customers wanted. The machines have been built by a manufacturing partner based in China, which also manufactures products for Microsoft, HP, Blackberry and Sony. Microsoft is expected to announce new Surface tablet computers, including a version with a smaller screen to compete with the iPad mini at an event in New York on Monday. The original Surface launched in October but sales have been slow.

thE Ministry of Justice has said that inmates could soon be banned from smoking inside prisons in England and Wales. A pilot scheme which will monitor how prisoners react to the move is being planned by the Government but sites have not yet been chosen, but is expected to launch in the south West in the spring of next year and if successful the ban would be rolled out across all prisons within 12 months.

A spokesman for the MoJ said: “We are considering banning smoking across the prison estate and as part of this are looking at possible sites as early adopters.” But there are fears the ban could cause disruption in prisons, with around 80% of inmates in England and Wales believed to smoke, according to the NHS. Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said it would be “very risky” to implement a blanket ban with no extra support for prisoners: “You’re putting extra pressure on a system that’s already under pressure,” she said. Ms Lyon says many prisoners use smoking to help “survive” their sentence. She says cuts to staffing and resources are already putting added strain on the prison system, and causing “increasing unrest” amongst inmates.

She does not oppose the proposed ban, but said alternate activities to smoking must be offered: “If the substitute for smoking were more time with staff, more time outside of your cell, more purposeful activity, more skills training that would be a very different picture,” she said. Steve Gillan, general secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association, told The Times that introducing the ban would be difficult. “There is no pretending otherwise,” he

said. “It could cause disturbances but they have done it successfully in Canada and in young offender institutions in England and Wales.” He added: “We welcome this move. It is our policy to have smoke-free prisons for our members. We will work with the ministry to make sure it works effectively.” Mr Gillan said that without a smoking ban the Prison Service risked legal action from a non-smoker claiming to suffer from the effects of passive smoking.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Funny Menu Translations

How many times have you looked at a menu in a foreign country and seen something that you couldn’t or wouldn’t eat. I am referring to the translation errors that appear on menus. Some of them are innocuous, just simple spelling mistakes. Here are 10 daft translations found on menus in Spain!

1. Peppers with Beautiful (I wonder if that refers to the sauce or the person who is eating them) – Pimientos con Bonito. The word bonito means beautiful, it also means Tuna! 2. Tape Spine Baguette. That is anyone’s guess! 3. It rotates of Smokey. Does it really. Not a clue what that little delicacy is, but at least it gives you a twirl. 4. Tidy Spawn. Whoever translated this had no idea about either language. They’ve mistaken alineadas (lined up) for aliñadas(seasoned) that’s how they came up with tidy fish spawn 5. Knives to the natural one. Believe it or not, this is Razor Clams cooked in their own juice with lemon. 6. Shrimps to the coat. This should read battered prawns. Someone needs to touch up on their English! 7. Sepia to the iron with ali smelt. That is certainly an odd one. It should read Grilled Squid with Garlic Sauce! 8. Chorizo to hell. This is a

flaming Spanish Sausage! 9. Bread whistles at landfill of meat. This turns out to be Meat filled Pita Bread 10. Yucca with I Wet. Mmmmmmm delicious! Things don’t get much better in Latin America. Considering that English and Spanish are spoken in so many countries it is amazing how these translations ever got onto menus! Here are some of the most hysterical food items that I have ever come across! They all come from one menu in Chile. • 12 units of Tails of Attacked Camarón - 12 Sautéed Shrimp • Crazys with potatoes May - Chilean abalone with potatoes and mayonnaise • Garden Gives the Sea (crazys, oysters, shrimps, males, choro maltón) - Assorted Shellfish (Chilean abalone, scallops, shrimp, razor clams, mussels) • Steal it to the iron - Grilled Snook • Steal it fried - Fried Snook • Foot of Lemon – Lemon Pie.

• Cup of white wine or I Dye - Glass of White or Red Wine • Pigeonhole of the White and Stained Bottle - Casillero del Diablo White and Red Bottle If you come across any funny menu items here in Tenerife, please let me know!

Not Only In Spain! Then we can take a trip around the world and find a whole assortment of wild and wonderful dishes. I will give them a miss but some of you might just enjoy them! • Cold shredded children and sea blubber in spicy sauce - China • Muscles Of Marines Thermos - Cairo • French fried ships - Cairo • Garlic Coffee - Europe • Fish Landlady style - Europe • Boiled Frogfish - Europe • Sweat from the trolley Europe

• Dreaded veal cutlet with potatoes in cream - China • Roasted duck let loose Poland • Beef rashers beaten up in the country peoples fashion - Poland • Fried friendship - Nepal • Strawberry crap - Japan • Pork with fresh garbage Vietnam • Toes with butter and jam - Bali • French Creeps - L.A. • Fried fishermen - Japan • Teppan Yaki - Before Your Cooked Right Eyes - Japan Now, if none of those delicacies give you a thrill, maybe some of these products from around the world will come in useful. • Kolic - Japanese mineral water • Crap Creamy Powder Japanese Coffee Creamer • Swine - Chinese chocolates • Libido - Chinese soda • Pocari Sweat - Japanese sport drink • Shocking - Japanese chewing gum • Cat Wetty - Japanese

moistened hand towels • Polio - Czechoslovakian laundry detergent • Crundy - Japanese candy • Superglans - Netherlands car wax • I’m Dripper - Japanese instant coffee • Zit - Greek soft drink • Colon Plus - Spanish detergent I think I will give the Colon Plus a try. I hear that as a detergent, when you drink it, it sends you clean round the bend! It is such a shame that restaurants and cafes get these translations so wrong. They must lose business over it, but it does make for some interesting reading nevertheless.

And Finally Would you reply to any of these adverts that have appeared in magazines or newspapers? I don’t think I would! • Lost: small apricot poodle.

Reward. Neutered like one of the family. • A superb and inexpensive restaurant. Fine food expertly served by waitresses in appetizing forms. • Dinner Special -- Turkey $2.35; Chicken or Beef $2.25; Children $2.00. • For sale: an antique desk suitable for lady with thick legs and large drawers. • Four-poster bed, 101 years old. Perfect for antique lover. • Now is your chance to have your ears pierced and get an extra pair to take home, too. • Wanted: 50 girls for stripping machine operators in factory. • Wanted: Unmarried girls to pick fresh fruit and produce at night. • We do not tear your clothing with machinery. We do it carefully by hand. That’s all from me this week. Have a great week and Happy 100th edition to Tenerife Weekly. Back to normal next week. Hope you had a laugh!

Backpack Hitler’s first film uncovered thank You

A FUnD established to help a homeless man who returned a lost backpack containing more than $42,000 (£26,000) has raised almost $110,000 (£68,500).

Glen James, 54, from Boston, spoke to police after he found the backpack containing $2,400 (£1,500) in cash and nearly $40,000 (£25,000) in traveller’s cheques at the South Bay Mall. The man who lost the backpack told workers at a nearby store and they called police, who later returned the backpack to him. Virginia resident Ethan Whittington read media accounts of Mr James’ honesty and started a fund for him on a crowd-funding website. The fund has since raised more than $100,000, including $182 (£114) of pocket money saved up by two young children. The Boston Police Department publicly thanked Mr James, saying his actions were “a remarkable tribute to him and his honesty”. Mr James said in a statement: “Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny of the money I found. I am extremely religious. God has always very well looked after me.”

thE first American film to warn about the rise of Adolf hitler has been found in a vault in Belgium after lying undiscovered for 75 years. Entitled hitler’s reign of terror, it shows nazi party rallies, book burnings and the ransacking of Jewish shops.

Smuggled out of Germany, it was produced by Cornelius Vanderbilt, heir to the wealthy US industrialist family, who visited Germany at the time Hitler was voted into power in 1933. The only surviving copy was discovered among 70,000 other films in the vast vaults of the Cinematheque film archive in Brussels. Archive staff believe the reel was ordered by someone who wanted to show the film in Belgium but it was never collected. It survived the war, Nazi occupation, in the Belgian customs office, and was moved to the archive in the 1970s. The film was premiered in New York in 1934, and was a big success, said Bruno Mestdagh, head of Cinematheque’s digital col-

lections: “The German embassy in the US protested, so the film was censored and adapted. It was then shown in other cities but with much less success,” he said. The film has now been re-mastered and will be shown at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in October. “Vanderbilt was able to capture some spectacular footage, but he just had a few minutes and they constructed a complete film around it,” said Mr Mestdagh. “But that wasn’t done by professional film-makers, so the film has a sometimes amateurish feel to it.”

The film includes a brief interview Vanderbilt had with Hitler as he prepared to address a rally in Berlin’s Sports Palace after winning the 1933 election: “In the hour-and-a-half that Hitler talked to that packed audience, he was as effective as a barker at a side show, travelling with a circus,” Vanderbilt says in the voiceover. He also visits Leonding, the Austrian town where Hitler went to primary school: “From all I could gather, he was one of the most unpopular kids in the neighbourhood. Nobody had a good word for him,” he said.

Chilli Farming In Tenerife For Those That Like It Hot!

Homegrown Peppers

Darren and Sam at the Tenerife Chilli Farm

Chilli peppers are a very popular addition to many cooked dishes for those who enjoy their foods very hot and spicy. We all know what a Chilli con Carne is like or a Vindaloo curry.

It just so happens that Tenerife provides the ideal climate and soil for growing chillies really well. A group of friends have decided to set up Tenerife Chilli Farm and to start growing the peppers as a crop. Darren Cox, Sam Gartley and Pete Smith have got a range of chillies growing up in the volcanic hills above Guia de Isora. The farm has only recently been established but I thought I would like to go along and see what they have there and are planning for the future. The plants are being grown in a large enclosure

covered over with hessian for protection. There are many different varieties and the Tenerife chilli farmers tell me they are hoping one day to develop their own Canary Island Naga. I hope they succeed because that would indeed be an impressive accomplishment! A Naga, by the way, is a very hot variety of chilli and in the world today there are a very large number of different types of peppers on offer. There are red ones, orange ones, yellow ones, white ones, purple ones, chocolate brown ones and black ones. There are long pointed chillies and very small ones known as bird’s eyes. There are bell peppers and rounded peppers called Scotch bonnets and ones with strange deformedlooking shapes. Some are very hot and others are very mild. Scorpion peppers have a slightly crinkly skin and a

sharp point like a scorpion’s sting and they are known for being some of the hottest chillies in the world. There is an awful lot to learn about chilli peppers, and I confess it is not an area of knowledge I specialise in but I have a friend from Cardiff, which is where I originally came from, who is a local expert on the subject. Chris Fowler set up and runs Welsh Dragon Chilli Ltd and sells the peppers he grows at markets and in the form of his own range of hot Tabasco sauces. Chris grows his chillies in a big poly-tunnel for protection from the Welsh weather and if he can do so well in Wales I am sure that Darren, Sam and Pete should have no problems here in Tenerife. They tell me that they will be posting announcements about the farm’s progress on their Facebook site so just search for them there as Tenerife Chilli Farm. I have had a go at growing chillies and bell peppers in pots on my balcony and find them easy enough. I just take

seeds out of any peppers and pop a few in compost in a pot, keep them watered and within a short time the seeds germinate. There are a few insect pests that attack chilli pepper plants though. One of the main problems your plants might suffer from is an infestation with aphids. I don’t like using insecticides and try to encourage hover-flies because their larvae gobble up aphids as fast as they can find them and will clear a potted plant in days. Hover-flies have striped bodies like little wasps but they don’t sting and are a gardener’s friend. The adults feed on nectar from flowers so growing other blooming plants will hopefully attract them. Hover-fly females inspect plants to see if they can find aphid colonies and if they do they lay their eggs knowing there will be food for their offspring. An insect that causes a lot of problems often but doesn’t take the blame is the

ant. Ants farm aphids, mealy bugs and scale insects and distribute them to plants that are clean of these pests. The ants collect the sticky and sweet honey-dew that aphids secrete and in many ways they use them like we do with cattle. Instead of using a field or a barn for cows like human farmers do, ants use plants to keep their ‘herds’ of aphids on and as food for them. So if your plants are getting covered in aphids watch to see if ants are attending them. If they are and you get

rid of the ants with an antkiller, such as boric acid that they will take back to the nest, then you will be stopping them re-infecting your plants with more aphids in future. You don’t need a lot of space to grow your own chillies because they will do well in pots or other containers so can be grown on a terrace or even on a window-sill. I have always had fun by planting seeds from all sorts of fruits and flowers just to see if they will grow and peppers usually do!

Chilli Pepper Facts

• Chilli can also be spelled chili or chile. These peppers are in the Capsicum genus of plants and in the Solanaceae or nightshade family. • Chillies originated in the Americas but are grown all around the world today. • Although chillies were cultivated over 6,000 years ago it is said that Christopher Columbus was one of the first Europeans to encounter the plants and their usage. • The peppers get their intense heat from a substance known as capsaicin. It is also the main ingredient in pepper spray that is used as a defensive weapon. • Chillies can be used fresh, dried or pickled.

• Capsaicin has been used as a medical treatment for topical pain relief. • Red chillis contain a lot of vitamin C and vitamin A so are good for your health.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

ice, ice Baby – Breast milk ice Cream anyone?

JUst a few short years ago, ice cream came in a choice of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or, if you were really lucky, rum and raisin. now the frozen treat has had a makeover and comes in a range of unusual flavours - including grass.

The unconventional dessert is the brainchild of Ahrash Akbari-Kalhur, the owner of Camden dairy, Chin Chin Laboratories. ‘Green Grass’ is a special that we do once a year to herald the start of summer,’ he explained. ‘Although some customers were dubious, we’ve found that people are getting more and more adventurous. And grass isn’t the only out-of-the ordinary flavour Akbari-Kalhur has experimented with. Also on the menu are tastes such as beetroot choc n’ chip and grilled sweetcorn, all of which are made by combining homemade syrups with cream and freezing them at speed using liquid nitrogen. Akbari-Kalhur is even planning a flavour called ‘Christmas Tree’ that tastes like pine needles for December: ‘We are starting to introduce vegetable based ice creams and we have a Hay Smoked Caramel coming on for harvest,’ he adds, ‘but Christmas Tree will be our grand finale of the year.’ Bizarre though Christmas Tree and Green Grass might sound, they’re part of a growing trend for gourmet ice cream in singular flavours. Another man fuelling the craze for novelty ice cream is Matt O’ Connor, the man behind ice cream shop, Icecreamists in London´s Covent Garden: ‘There is a real trend away from high fat, high sugar American ice creams such as Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs to Italian style gelato which is lower in fat and sugar, has less air and more flavour,’ he explains. ‘There is a huge difference in mouth-feel, texture and flavour and ice cream aficionados are moving towards these more sophisticated ice creams.’ Among O’Connor’s ‘sophisticated’ inventions are gelatos made from holy water,

Viagra and even breast milk, although the latter rapidly upset both the council and singer Lady Gaga who complained about O’Connor’s choice of name - the Baby Gaga. Breast Milk ice cream was a revelation,’ says O’ Connor. ‘People came from all over the world to try it. It was 80% women who purchased the ice cream and [they] really got behind what we trying to do. He added: ‘Obviously Westminster Council banned it, then unbanned it a week later and Lady Gaga tried to sue us so it wasn’t to everybody’s taste.’ While not everyone wants ice cream with Viagra or

breast milk in it, O’Connor does think the days of cheap ice cream made with synthetic ingredients is coming to an end: ‘Ice cream should be the most exciting product in the world yet it’s being strangled by corporations who sell us fake ice cream,’ he explains. ‘Most ice cream hasn’t seen a cow in its life and the only thing the manufacturers are milking is consumers.’ While Akbari-Kalthur is concentrating on his Christmas tree flavoured effort, O’ Connor says his next flavour will prove just as controversial as Baby Gaga: ‘The next few are going to sail very close to the law,’ he reveals. ‘They will probably be sold under the counter.’

Our 100th Edition RAINBOW Cake

As you have probably gathered by now this edition is celebrating our 100th Edition of the Tenerife Weekly. Going from strength to strength, our fantastic team work very hard keeping you up to date with the goings on.

Being part of this wonderful team, I wanted to create something different and for a change share something special from Pugh’s Pantry.

With the paper now being full of colour and much more vibrant than the original editions I settled for a bit of a celebration cake, layered in rainbow colours, filled with White Chocolate butter cream and smothered in fresh whipped dairy cream. Here’s how I made it. You can cheat and use a basic sponge mix if you prefer but I have a wonderful all in one cake recipe with equal amounts, which I simply increased the ingredient quantity to give me that slightly larger cake.

Ingredients:

Cake mix: 525g Plain flour 525g sugar 525g softened margarine 2 flat tablespoons baking powder 9 medium eggs To colour: B lue , Red and Yellow food colouring White chocolate Butter cream: 100g unsalted butter softened 175g icing sugar 100g white chocolate For the Outside/decoration: 2 cartons of whipping cream Some rainbow sweets – e.g. M&M’s or Smarties

Method: Preheat the oven to 140°C – this is very low but the trick is by cooking the cake slowly you shouldn’t get any unnecessary browning around the edges and top of the cake. Also, it prevents it from cracking and being uneven on the top. Just be patient when baking. Place all the ingredients for the cake mix into a bowl and mix them together for approx. 4 minutes until light and fluffy. Next split the mixture evenly between 6 bowls. Now we need to colour them.

We need 6 different colours red, orange, yellow, blue, purple and green. Now it was very hard to get all colours over here to make the orange, purple and green cakes, so I had to mix red and yellow to make orange / red and blue to make purple / blue and yellow to make green. I used 2 tablespoons in each bowl to give them their vibrant colours so when I had to mix the colours to obtain the other shades I simply used one tablespoon of each required colour. I used a square silicon cake tin, but you can use whatever you prefer. Bake each colour individually, SLOWLY and checking constantly and adjusting the oven if you think that it is cooking too fast. I baked each layer for approx. 30 minutes and sometimes reduced the oven temperature to 120°C so I could be sure that I wasn’t browning any of the edges. This can take a while but be patient, the cake will be lovely and soft and moist if you follow this rule. Allow each colour to cool before sandwiching them altogether.

Make the butter cream while you are doing this. Firstly gently melt the white chocolate. With an electric mixer fluff up the butter and then add the sifted icing sugar gradually. Now mix in the melted chocolate. Now it’s time to layer them. Start with the purple base at the bottom spread evenly some buttercream and then add the blue layer. Repeat the layering process spreading the butter cream in between. Starting at the bottom your colours should go from Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and finally Red.

Leave this to set for at least an hour in the fridge so it all moulds perfectly together. I left it overnight but that is purely my preference. When you are ready to decorate the outside, gently trim the cake with a sharp knife so it is even. Slowly spread the whipped cream on top and then gently around the sides building it up gently, and then smooth off the excess with a palate knife or a good flat knife. Decorate it as you wish. You could use rainbow sprinkles around the edges or carry on the rainbow theme with the coloured sweets. Enjoy – I know our team did!

Pugh’s tips and tricks - the original ingredient quantity for this basic all in one sponge cake is as follows: 175g plain flour 175g Margarine 175g sugar 3 eggs 1 flat teaspoon baking powder

1 Car – 3 Million Miles

The owner of a 1966 Volvo who has clocked up three million miles and won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Irv Gordon bought the red P1800 on June 30th 47 years ago and has been driving it ever since: “The day I first bought the car I picked it up on a Friday night and started driving around town and showing it off to all of my friends and local pubs and wherever else,” Mr Gordon said. “Before I knew it, I was up in New Jersey and up in Connecticut and went back to my college in Massachusetts.” He said the qualifications he was looking for in a car were simple: reliability and dependability: “I was very happy when I figured I got a car that’s going to be reliable and dependable, and well, I am still driving it today,” Mr Gordon said. On March 27, 2002, he was awarded the world record for the great-

About Cars

Americans have been driving and riding in cars for over 100 years. Today the United States ranks first worldwide in cars per capita. Since the earliest days of the automobile there has been no shortage of stories, observations and funny facts that have to do with cars and car culture.

The Early Days

est ever recorded mileage by a single owner of a vehicle when he hit two million miles. In just over 11 years, Mr Gordon

was able to add another million to his odometer. He reached the three million miles mark while driving in Alaska.

New Seat Leon St Awarded ‘Five Star Rating’

The new Seat Leon ST has been awarded top marks by car safety assessment body Euro NCAP. The five star rating puts the Leon ST among the very safest cars on the road. The rating is the result of exceptional scores in all areas of the industry-standard Euro NCAP test, but particularly the adult occupant safety and child occupant safety sections, for which the Leon ST scored 94% and 92% respectively.

Funny Facts

The new Seat Leon ST made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, this spacious versatile estate car goes on sale next month with first deliveries in January next year. The new Leon ST offers a range of highly efficient engines that all have start/ stop and energy recovery systems. An impressive choice of engine is the 1.2 TSI 105 PS engine that returns 57.6 mpg, while the state-of-the-art 1.4 TSI 140 PS runs very close with a 53.3 mpg average figure. At the top of the petrol line-up is the 1.8 TSI engine, the entry level diesel model is the 1.6 TDI emitting just 106 g/ km CO2 and returning 68.9 mpg. If

you fancy the sporty 2.0 TDI this achieves a fantastic 65.7mpg. Safety technology includes MultiCollision Brake, Tiredness Recognition and Lane Assist. The Seat Leon ST has received two Euro NCAP Advanced awards for its lane-keeping assistant and multi-collision brake systems. The Seat lane-keeping assistant uses a camera mounted behind the rear view mirror, which detects lane markings and helps the driver stay in lane. Working at speeds above 40 mph and linked to the power steering system, it applies a small amount of torque to the steering wheel intended to prompt the driver into taking corrective action should he or she begin to drift out of lane. The multi-collision braking system detects when the car has been involved in an accident, for example when the airbag has been fired and automatically applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate a subsequent impact. It triggers both the hazard warning lights and the brake lights. Dr. Matthias Rabe, Executive VicePresident for Research and Development at SEAT S.A said “Seat is committed to the highest levels of active and passive safety in all its models. The thorough development work developed at our Technical Centre is now rewarded with the excellent classification achieved by both variants of the new Leon in the demanding Euro NCAP tests. We are also pleased with the two Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for the SEAT multi-collision brake system and the SEAT lane-keeping assistant in the new Leon. It is the new Leon family at the very top of the latest technology.”

The X Factor - Bootcamp Editor Recommends ITV 1 - 20:20 - 21:50

It’s bootcamp this week on the X Factor which means contestants are put through their paces as they fight for their place at judges’ houses. And this year with some dramatic changes, bootcamp is even more challenging than ever.

In the first bootcamp twist, the judges’ categories will be revealed at bootcamp so the stakes are even higher as each judge has the final say in choosing who to take with them to their judge’s house. The drama doesn’t stop there as in another exciting twist contestants will battle it out on stage

for a sought after place. During the final challenge each act will perform individually and their judge then has to decide there and then if they want the act to take one of six seats on stage – each one representing a place at their judge’s house. However, no one is safe until the last person in each category has sung as even once an act has secured a seat and a place in the final six, the judge can change their mind at any point, swapping an act already through with someone else who comes on and out-performs them. Who will have what it takes to keep hold of their seat and a coveted place at one of the judge’s houses?

Tom Kerridge’s Proper Pub Food BBC 2 - 20:30 - 21:00 In the second instalment of his Proper Pub Food, two-Michelin-star pub chef tom Kerridge gives us a lesson in recipes that remind us of the great outdoors. Tom shows us how to recreate our favourite outdoor food at home, with recipes inspired by summers spent in Great British beer gardens and cooking on the barbeque. then heads to Cornwall to make a fish burger with freshly caught mackerel, pollack and lobster. There’s a delicious maple cake baked on the barbecue, some special sticky barbecued beef ribs cooked in a barbecue sauce, and a delicious warm tomato salad. Tom will also visit some of his favourite suppliers and give some great tips on how to source and get the most out of British produce, as well as dropping in at some of his favourite pubs around the country.

The Great British Year Editor Recommends BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00

the first episode of the Great British year begins with new year’s Day.

Time-lapse photography captures Britain in the grip of winter, as the mist swirls in the hollows, frost shrouds the country and water begins to freeze, expanding and destroying plant cells. We see how British wildlife copes with the cold, as red kites track the farmers ploughing the hard ground, uncovering grubs and worms; and owls use their super-sensitive hearing to dive on voles under the snow. We discover how the changes of the seasons

and the challenges they bring are reflected in the lives of British people. We are more in tune with nature than we realise. The approach of spring brings new life across the countryside and is captured in stunning and surprising detail. Adders emerge into the frosty air to bask in the spring sunshine and the woodland floor erupts with carpets of snowdrops. In the city, new grass brings out thousands of people rushing to mow their lawns by day while deer creep out of the shadows to graze roadside verges by night.

fa Saves £2m fulham fC removes after fabio

FABIo Capello’s resignation as England manager saved the Football Association up to £2m, according to the latest accounts for English football’s governing body.

Capello, who resigned in February last year after John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy, was paid up to £6m a year by the FA, but his successor Roy Hodgson was recruited on a lower salary. The accounts for the year to December 2012 reveal that operating costs for Club England, the FA subsidiary that manages the England team, had dropped from £8m in 2011, to £6m. FA general secretary Alex Horne confirmed that Hodgson, hired in May 2012, was paid less than Capello, and the reduction in salary combined with the three-month period when the FA did not employ a manager, explained the saving: “Roy earns less than Fabio did, but the deal with Fabio is confidential,” said Horne. “We paid him a small amount of money as severance, but it was less than we would have paid him if he had stayed working for the European Championships. Roy

only started work just before the Euros, so we saved money.” The FA’s total revenues declined by £11m in 2012, from £329m to £318m, largely because of the impact of the London Olympics. Wembley was unable to host concerts and other events during the Olympic period, meaning it missed out on similar revenues to those brought in by 11 Take That concerts in 2011. The absence of the Champions League final, worth £3.6m in 2011, also contributed. Horne also said the outstanding debt form the construction of Wembley stands at £267m. The accounts show the FA spent £26m on interest servicing that debt in 2011. The FA has a further £100m of debt associated with the National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Staffordshire, which opened in 2011. It recorded a £6.5m loss for the year, but Horne

five years. Wembley is to stage two NFL games over the next month, Minnesota Vikings v Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 29 and the Jacksonville Jaguars v San Francisco 49ers on October 27. Managing director Roger Maslin said he would be keen to host the Super Bowl were the opportunity to arise, and said he was completely confident the NFL games would not have any effect on the Wembley pitch ahead of the England football team’s important World Cup qualifying matches.

Wembley Bids to Host euro 2020

WEMBLEy is competing with Cardiff’s Millennium stadium and other leading European venues in Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Kiev and Istanbul to host the finals of Euro 2020.

The tournament will be staged across 13 European cities, with 32 countries applying to Uefa for the right to host group and knockout matches, or a special package of semi-finals and final. The Football Association has applied for both packages, but would prefer Wembley to stage the culmination of the tournament. Istanbul are the favourites, having received the endorsement of Uefa president Michel Platini when they initially bid to stage the entire 2020 tournament, and having just missed out on the 2020 Olympics and Euro 2016. FA General Secretary Alex Horne confirmed that Istanbul was favourite: “Euro 2020 is something we very much want to be part of. There are seven countries bidding for the finals and we are one. We get the sympathy around Turkey having missed out on the Olympics; they are the front-runners to stage the semi-final and final. If that was the case we would still want to stage a group game and perhaps a quarter-final.” If Wembley staged group matches England would be guaranteed to play home games, assuming they qualified for the tournament. Wembley would be “paired” with another city to host group games, possibly Cardiff or Glasgow, which is also bidding for group matches.

Jackson Statue

thE statue of Michael Jackson, commissioned by former Fulham FC owner Mohamed al Fayed following the singer’s death in June 2009, will be taken down from outside grounds.

Club chairman, Shahid Khan, has said removing the controversial statue, erected in 2011, is the “right thing” to do. Fayed and Jackson are said to have been close friends, with the legendary singer once attending a match at the stadium. But current chairman said supporters had made their views clear on the statue: “Craven Cottage means the world to generations of Fulham supporters, and I have heard from many of them over the past two months,” he said in a state-

ment on the club’s website. “Our supporters’ views on the statue have been made clear. I respect Mr al Fayed and know he had good intentions in paying an individual tribute. However, the removal of the statue is the right thing for Fulham Football Club.” Fans have complained the statue had nothing to do with football and makes the Craven Cottage side look ridiculous. The other statue outside the ground is of Johnny Haynes, who played more than 650 times for the club over 18 seasons.

Mr Khan is pressing ahead with the removal despite Mr al Fayed’s warning that he would be “in big trouble” if the statue was ever taken down, he famously once told fans to “go to hell” if they did not appreciate the distinctive tribute. When he sold the club to Mr Khan in July he joked he would shave off the new owner’s moustache if the tribute was ever removed The artwork will now be given back to Mr al Fayed as the club continues with its redevelopment of the Riverside Stand.

Alonso’s Cycle Team Bid Fails

53

Continued From Back Page

Formula One driver Fernando Alonso’s plans to buy Spanish cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi have collapsed, according to sponsors Euskaltel.

A statement said: “We could not reach a definitive agreement. Euskaltel is now obliged, regrettably, to return to the process of an orderly and responsible closure of the project,” they added. “For Euskaltel and the team this is sad news after the hope generated by the initial agreement reached at the end of August and public declarations at that time by Alonso and his representatives.” Ferrari driver Alonso, a keen bike rider, had been set to purchase the company that owns the Basque team’s WorldTour licence to enable them to continue racing in professional cycling’s top league in 2014. In a statement released on his Twitter account, Alonso also expressed regret about the deal’s collapse: “We’ve tried it until the end but it’s just been impossible to have a cycling team in 2014,”

he said. “My passion for the sport remains intact so this is only the beginning of the future. From tomorrow morning we are going to work on building, if needs be from scratch, a team we can be proud of.” Led by Spain’s Samuel Sanchez, the 2008 Olympic road-race champion, they face closure at the end of the season after 17 years of activity. While no financial details were given of Alonso’s offer, Spanish media had reported that the double world champion had some six

million euros available to spend on the project.

12 Year Ban For Stephen Lee

The former world number five snooker player Stephen Lee has been given a 12-year ban for match-fixing, it has been has confirmed. The star was found guilty of seven

match-fixing charges by an independent tribunal last week. Tribunal chairman Adam Lewis QC also ordered that 38-year-old Lee pay costs of £40,000. The case related to seven

matches in 2008 and 2009 - three in the Malta Cup in 2008, two at the UK Championship in the same year, one at the 2009 China Open and one at the 2009 World Championship. A statement from the World Professional Billards and Snooker

Oracle showed its incredible speed when it reeled in the Kiwis while zigzagging toward the Golden Gate Bridge on the windward third leg. As Oracle worked to keep its lead, Sir Ben implored his friends by telling them: “This is it. This is it. Working your (rears) off.”

There were hugs and handshakes after Spithill steered the fast cat across the finish line off America’s Cup Park on Piers 27-29. Sir Ben, a five times Olympic medallist, was drafted in ahead of race six, at which point Oracle had won just one

race to Emirates’ four. Speaking after the race, he said: “It was an amazing comeback from our team. We were 8-1 down against the Kiwis and we had a huge mountain to climb. We’re delighted. The final race was awesome ... and it was great to have been part of it.” Spithill said the squad had “gelled together” following the sailor’s arrival. Owned by software billionaire Larry Ellison, Oracle Team USA was docked two points for illegally modifying boats in warm up regattas and had to win 11 races to keep the Auld Mug. Oracle last won the oldest trophy in international sport in February 2010 when the event was last held.

Association (WPBSA) said: “The suspension is to be calculated from 12 October 2012, when the interim suspension was imposed. Therefore Stephen Lee will not be able to participate in snooker before 12 October 2024.” WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said: “We take no pride in having to deal with such serious issues. However, this demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that snooker is free from corruption. It is an important part of our anti-corruption approach that players found to be involved in fixing matches or any aspect of a match are severely dealt with. We work closely with partners globally and the message we are sending is that if you get involved in match-fixing you will be found out and removed from the sport.” The WPBSA had asked for a lifetime ban but the organisation’s disciplinary head Nigel Mawer insisted a 12-year suspension was effectively the same thing: “In effect it is a life ban because I think it is highly unlikely that Stephen Lee will be able to come back to the sport at this level. We don’t take great pleasure out of that - this is a case of a fantastic snooker player who has thrown it all away through making the

wrong decisions.” Mawer added that he believed snooker was overwhelmingly a clean sport: “I am independent and outside the organisation and have a law enforcement background and all the intelligence on irregular betting comes to me. Hand on heart I believe it is a very, very clean sport - I have only had to investigate four incidents in 7,000 matches and two of those have led to suspensions, which puts it in context.” In his written findings, tribunal chairman Lewis pointed out that life-time bans were not part of the disciplinary rules at the time of the offences but that he had the discretion to impose one of that length. The findings state: “These breaches occurred when Mr Lee was in a financially perilous state not entirely of his own making and was finding it difficult to obtain entry to enough tournaments. As a weak man in a vulnerable position he succumbed to temptation. I consider it unlikely that he was the prime mover or instigator of the activity. It seems to me likely that advantage was taken of him.” Lee’s agent Adam Quigley has confirmed he will lodge an appeal.

Sandaza wasn’t a stand out player for Glasgow Rangers last season but when Sergio Aragoneses jumped to beat the ball away with his palms it fell invitingly to Sandaza and he dispatched it. There was just 16 minutes left on the clock and only 10 Tenerife players left on the field and on current form there was no way back for the home side. The first half had panned out to expectations, tight defending from Tenerife and a non functioning midfield unable to get anything out of Aridane and Loro up front. Cristo is fading away in the middle of the park and Rivero played just in front of the back four squandering his creative qualities. Suso was a shining light again on the right, his work rate is exceptional and he lifts the crowd with his tricks and darting runs. Carlos Ruiz was making up for his defensive nightmare last week by calmly marshalling the back line; his interception of Diaz as he threatened was top class. Loro seems to have lost all his sparkle from last season and Aridane is an old style battering ram who needs runners around him to bring out his natural goal scoring ability. Borja Perez replaced Loro at the start of the second half, he didn’t look any fitter or better than on his debut,

Lugo on the break

CD tenerife v Lugo he drifts out of the play and doesn’t have enough pops at goal. The Lugo keeper Mallo fumbled a few back passes and looked distinctly dodgy but Tenerife didn’t have anyone to punish him. Chechu made one great run and pass after coming on at half time but that was about his lot and the referee was about to rekindle his relationship with Aitor Sanz. The home midfielder had already been booked and should have been withdrawn when Ricardo replaced Rivero. Ref Munera Montero had sent Sanz off in his two previous games under him and the second card arrived after 61 minutes complete with an eruption of anger from Sanz. Ricardo wasted a clear shot sending it skywards and Suso continued to press while seething at the linesman who shared the ref’s unfaltering loyalty to Lugo. Then Sandaza made his appearance and that goal capped another knock back in a faltering start to the season. Coach Alvaro Cervera still has the crowd with him, the goal was the cue for howls of protest at club President Miguel Concepcion but he has his finger on the trigger and the coach needs a win at home to Real Madrid Castilla this Sunday to stop it twitching.

Winter of discontent in Santa Cruz

AFtEr two seasons of relative calm the flak is flying again at the heliodoro. Influential supporters group Frente Blanquiazul issued a statement attacking CD tenerife President Concepcion for weak leadership and contempt for the fans and have urged him to resign.

Accusations have also been made that social security have embargoed 250,000 euros of season ticket money to pay debts. President Concepcion has hit back by denying the club have sounded out former Tenerife and Chelsea player Slavisa Jokanovic as a possible replace-

ment for coach Cervera who signed a two year contract extension in the summer. The Serbian moved into management and made Partisan Belgrade league and cup winners and is currently boss at Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. President Concepcion has previously said he would step down if a credible replacement could be found; now former Tenerife player and TV presenter Pier Cherubino has declared his interest in the job. Of course it’s not that straight forward, shares, financial guarantees, large debts, and potential investors are all part of a difficult equation to solve, and in the meantime goals and points have to be the priority.

Murci Spearheads Sport And Fun To The CD Marino Charge Help The Children Yosimar

The goals and the confidence are flowing at CD Marino, they returned to top spot with a 4-2 crushing of Atletico Granadilla on Saturday night. New striker Murci struck two more goals and is just getting into his stride.

It took 37 minutes to turn dominance into the first goal and that’s how it stayed until the break. Four minutes into the second half Jorge Pulido doubled the lead and Murci soon followed with his second of the night. Marino are a potent force this season, Murci is strong, good in the air, and has an eye for goal, the last two seasons he has wracked up 39 for Cultural Leonesa and 25 last term for Arenas de Gexto, both in this division. Granadilla cracked the home defence as Alexis de Paz pulled one back but Yosimar made his mark

A bit of fitness, a big splash of enjoyment, a cascade of music, and most importantly much needed money for local children’s charities. That’s what’s on the menu at the Sport and Fun day in Santa Cruz on Sunday 29 September.

the sea to the island of La Palma to take on second placed Mensajero who are now two points behind Marino after drawing 0-0 at Las Zocas.

Pleasure And Pain As CB Canarias Beat Frankfurt

Adeje got a taste of international basketball as CB Canarias headed down from La Laguna for an international friendly with Frankfurt Skyliners of the German Bundesliga. The teams were well matched but CB Canarias overwhelmed their blue vested visitors in the final quarter to win 78-60.

Celebrations were subdued by a nasty leg injury to Fotios Lampropoulos, he crashed to the floor early in the game and was carried off, and tests later confirmed a torn cruciate ligament in his left leg, which means an operation and at least six months to recover. There were still plenty of positives for the yellows to take from the game, the whole squad made telling contributions, new American Luke Sikma worked hard for his 10 points but had to give second best to Levi Rost with 18 points including a final quarter blitz that closed the door on Frankfurt with a 30-15 advantage. Young Senegal player Mamadou Ndiang was impressive and the squad still has Argentinian signing Juan Gutierrez to join the line up. There was plenty of encouragement for southern based basketball players and fans among the
