Welcome

3-5 June 2013

A note from the Conference Director

I

t’s no secret that technology is evolving. Almost every known industry and vocation on the planet is facing a tipping point where technology will change it forever. And for us in education, we face a number of crucial developments. We must develop our education leadership strategies and our pedagogical practices to evolve with technology. We must build, implement and support systems that will bring Australian education into the future. And we must manage the influx of new technology to sustainably deliver our future visions. That’s why — at this important point in the history of education — we’ve brought together leaders from across the entire life-span of learning. From primary and secondary schooling, through to tertiary education and workplace learning, together at EduTECH 2013 we’ll examine the strategic and pivotal opportunities technology offers for improving learning outcomes. Some of the world’s most respected thought leaders on education — the likes of Sir Ken Robinson, Dan Pink, Sal Khan and Alan November — will guide us through. We’d also like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors, without whom EduTECH would

not be possible. It’s their investment in the event that not only allows us to bring you these amazing speakers, but also subsidises the price of the event to make it affordable to all. Please do take the time to show your appreciation of their support by visiting them in the Expo. We aim to bring you the world’s most respected thought leaders on education and technology, as well as the most informative sessions on issues that impact you. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the event content and experience, so please ensure you complete the feedback forms enclosed in the conference documentation. Please join us as we help shape the future of education at EduTECH 2013. Yours truly,

Charles King Conference Director – EduTECH Association & Communications Events

Keynotes

Brisbane convention & exhibition centre

Star-studded line-up ...

Sir Ken Robinson Alan November One of the world’s leading speakers, Sir Ken Robinson is an internationally acclaimed expert on creativity and innovation, advising governments, international agencies, major companies and cultural organisations. In his EduTECH Keynote, Sir Ken looks at how education systems across the world are having to reform their way of working to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, and why we need to make radical changes in how we educate students. His book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything is a New York Times best seller and has been translated into 21 languages. His latest book is a 10th anniversary edition of his classic work on creativity and innovation, Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative. Conference delegates who have yet to witness Sir Ken in full flow should check out the videos of his legendary 2006 and 2010 talks to the TED Conference. You’d be in good company; they’ve been viewed by an estimated 200 million people and rising, in over 150 countries. www.edutech.net.au

A man of many talents, Alan November started his career as an oceanography teacher and has also been the director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant, and university lecturer. He’s also a man in demand, delivering keynotes and workshops in every US state, across Canada and throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Central America, and helping schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology. Alan’s areas of expertise include planning across the curriculum, staff development, new school design, community building and leadership development. EduTECH delegates can look forward to his Keynote on how to get the ball rolling on implementing a flipped classroom in your school. For Masterclass attendees, Alan will explore how we’ve underestimated the capacity of students to lead and contribute to their learning community and asking the question ‘Who owns the learning?’

Dan Pink The world’s leading thinker on motivation, innovation and creativity, Dan Pink uses decades of behavioural science research to overturn the conventional wisdom about human motivation. He is the author of four provocative books about the changing world of work, including the long-running New York Times best seller, A Whole New Mind – which charts the rise of right-brain thinking in modern economies – and the number one New York Times best seller Drive. His writing has gained a worldwide following; his books have been translated into 32 languages and his articles on business and technology have appeared in a whole host of publications. Dan’s EduTECH Keynote will draw on cutting-edge examples from education and business to help the audience learn the three key ingredients to intrinsicallymotivated high performers. He’ll also explain why the traditional approach to high performance not only backfires in the workplace, but also in the classroom and on campus.

Q&A with Sal Khan Founder of Khan Academy jo Earp

H

i Sal, it’s great to talk to you. Without giving too much away, what can delegates expect from your keynote? This is my first time presenting [at EduTECH] and the keynote is kind of the back story of the Khan Academy ... but also how things like the Khan Academy can be part of a catalyst to help rethink how education is done. Why are these kind of events important for educators? Even though teachers obviously have colleagues and even though they’re in a room with other people, it can actually be a very lonely profession at times. ... They have an incredibly tense environment, they’re with 20 or 30 kids, and for the whole day they’re kind of ‘on’ for the entire time. So, I think it’s really valuable for these folks to kind of get an outlet where they can connect with other educators and hopefully get stimulated to take a step back from the day to day and hopefully get invigorated. Tell me a bit about your own experience of school. It was mixed; you know, some of my best memories are from my school days and some of my worst. I think there were moments where you have some incredible discoveries and inspirations, and you obviously meet some really great folks — both students and teachers. But there are other moments where you feel disengaged, you feel like you’re waiting for the clock to pass

and the bell to ring. Like most people, it was a fairly mixed bag. Was there an inspiring teacher that helped shaped your thinking in a particular direction? I had a bunch of teachers that I would put in that category, who in different ways inspired that type of thinking. If I go back really early, I was put into a gifted program

in the second grade. They took you out of these normal classes and you had these teachers who would explore things with you and figure out what works for you. I thought that was a really powerful experience early on in my schooling. Later on, especially in high school, the ones that jump out — I had a maths teacher called Mr Hernandez who was also a community advisor for the maths team, so I got to work with him really as a

18 • Official EduTech National Congress & Exhibition Guide 2013

colleague and so that was kind of a formative experience. Also, the journalism teacher Miss Kennedy ... I think the common theme of these experiences were that these teachers were really powerful mentors and knew me on a personal level. You started off making videos for your cousins, and that developed into Khan Academy. You’ve obviously always been interested in teaching others? Absolutely, that’s what got me hooked and even before Khan Academy I liked teaching or explaining things, kind of mentoring folks. I had done it informally at multiple points in my life and making those tutoring videos for my cousins gave me an outlet at the time ... and it seemed like it was helping them. At the same time I was able to do my day job too and I was kind of having the best of both worlds. Going forward, I love making [the content for Khan Academy] so much ... we’re getting other people to provide content but part of my motivation is I want to continue producing this until I’m 80 or 90 years old! I won’t be behind all of the videos, but I definitely hope that I can continue no matter what to spend a significant chunk of my own time making content. Khan Academy is a bit of a strange animal, I think whatever the ‘secret sauce’ might have been was the connection people feel with the site and I don’t want it www.edutech.net.au

[Teaching] can actually be a very lonely profession at times ... They have an incredibly tense environment, they’re with 20 or 30 kids, and for the whole day they’re kind of ‘on’ for the entire time.” to turn into a big behemoth that loses that. Part of that is [for me as] executive director of the organisation to be kind of close to the teaching and the learning. I read that somebody called you the ‘world’s first superstar teacher’, what do you think of that description? I guess people like to write and fill headlines, for me I don’t know how superstars are supposed to feel but I feel pretty normal! What’s been the response from the teaching community to Khan Academy? I guess there are three classes of teachers: the ones that use Khan Academy, and those are the ones we have the closest contact with, those teachers obviously like it because they’re using it and from them we hear really great feedback. Obviously it’s not perfect, and that’s what’s valuable about connecting with those teachers, they are always giving us ways to improve. The other group is folks who have maybe heard of us but don’t really know or misunderstand what we are; then there are folks that just haven’t heard of us. I think the last two groups it’s just an awareness thing. Khan Academy started off as something that was going to be completely outside of the classroom, so it’s been a far warmer reception than I would have ever guessed. There’s a big debate about teaching students to code — do you think that’s something we should be looking at in the curriculum? Coding is not the only thing. I think teaching students to code, to do more, for lack of a better word, ‘creative’ thinking – and I would put code into that category. Most school systems designed their curricula www.edutech.net.au

about a hundred years ago and it really hasn’t changed much. If you talk to most really successful software engineers, most did learn in their early teens or maybe middle school. I think it’s one of many powerful creative outlets for kids. How do you see Khan Academy developing in the future? I guess there are two components. There’s the awareness and then there’s the access

component. A lot of the world right now doesn’t have access to some type of a device and decent internet access. Hopefully the word of mouth continues ... it’s really up to us to continue to make a good product. On the access issue, there are folks that are creating solutions that are offline and so on, but my real hope is that over the next five years or so the technical requirements you need for Khan Academy are going to become

that much more common in the developing world. I would say in the next five years in the developed world it will be almost universal access and in the developing world it will get a lot better. So, it won’t be solved overnight. The other thing we’re working on is internationalisation of the entire site — translating into the world’s major languages. The other thing ... is really expanding the content that literally covers everything, and that’s not just going to be me, that’s going to be a bunch of folks, professors, grad students, who knows. And also deepening the experience of the platform, connecting students to each other, giving better diagnostics, being more analytical about how do we optimise engagement and motivation for students. Finally, will Khan Academy always be a not-for-profit organisation? When it started this was a hobby and I got so much satisfaction out of people using it and liking it and hopefully getting empowered by it. I just never wanted people to question why we’re doing it, and I never wanted our team to get skewed from what the real priority was. When you do a not-for-profit versus for profit you’re afraid that, well, maybe you won’t be able to get capital — so far so good, the philanthropic community has been really powerful. Not-for-profits can bring in revenue that all gets thrown into the mission, and so we’re getting revenue from people who want to partner with us ... we have people licensing our content, and we’ve been able to attract a really world-class team in our organisation. So, knock on wood, so far so good — it seems like the not-for-profit model is right for us. Sal Khan will deliver a Day One keynote.

Q&A with Roger Pryor School Education Director Grant quarry also helped out with their literacy skills. Then I started using them in an admin setting, because after that I went back to the classroom for a year, and then I was principal at a sport and rec. centre, which is like one of your outdoor education centres in Victoria, so I used things like Mail Merge and all of those databased functions; that sort of stuff.

You’re quite passionate about encouraging innovative practice in the effective integration of ICT. When did your interest in ICT really take off? Probably in the mid-‘80s. In 1985 I was asked to take over as teacher in charge at a school for young offenders. When I got there, they had an Apple 2E sitting in the cupboard. So, I got a bit interested in finding out how that worked and then ended up getting some funds to get another four Apple 2Es. It meant I could run a 1:1 program with kids who’d been locked up for a variety of offences. It just showed me that when kids were very anxious, waiting for court hearings or kids with maybe emotional disturbances, those sorts of things, kids with not very good interpersonal skills, being able to set them up with a 1:1 computer program seemed to be something that really worked fairly well for them. With some particular programs it

There wouldn’t have been a lot of literature around then about using technology in education I imagine? In the mid-80s it was a little bit hit and miss. A lot of the expertise resided in maths faculties and they saw themselves as the gurus and keepers of all knowledge. But, in the very early ‘90s though there was quite a bit of activity around using computers at that stage more for constructing knowledge and so on, a lot of multimedia applications with things like HyperCard stacks and then HyperStudio – this was all pre-internet, don’t forget. Using the computer as a fairly creative interface was actually something that was starting to gather a bit of momentum in some places at that stage. But as soon as the internet happened in the early to mid‘90s we then became consumers of knowledge again for quite some time and we’re only now getting back into using computers

as a creative interface. What can attendees at your address at EduTECH expect to take away from your presentation? I’m hoping just a reflection on two very simple questions: What is the intent of the schooling experience? and How do we make it as relevant and engaging for as many people as possible? (Within obviously the realities that we do have to deal with). Starting from the point of view of: Who are the people that our schools are actually for and what do we do for them and how do we make decisions about that? It’s getting that whole agreement around what the whole purpose of the schooling experience is all about. Here in Australia we’ve got common agreement that everyone wants things to be better, but what better looks like is still the subject of as many different opinions as people you talk to. At the moment, quite often it starts at the other end – we have this view that somehow or other we can say, ‘Well, people are going to need this stuff’ and then we backward map from there. I think in my own experience, and probably in your own if you thought about it, people made decisions on what we should learn based on what they thought we’d need and there’s probably only

rather than simply keeping their head down in their little foxhole and just doing their innovation in their own room, maybe there’s some room for learning how to ... manage up, manage across, to build relationships.” a percentage of that stuff that’s stood up to the test of time, that’s been relevant. You’re a big social media advocate and an avid user, how do you see that evolving into the future, particularly with regards to education? Social media is basically about connections, it’s about being able to connect people in ways that go beyond their traditional networks. Aspects of social media simply augment existing networks, I’m thinking particularly of things like Facebook. But things like Twitter enable connections with people that previously you wouldn’t have been able to connect with – for teachers, that’s been enormously valuable. There’s a very vibrant community of teachers within Australia and internationally who are able to then, just informally, to keep in contact with each other, but then set up reasonably informal chat networks and things like that by advertising particular times when they’ll have an edchat session or a primary chat section. Or there’s a group called PE geeks; there are all sorts of groups that run one-hour chats, where it’s just a Q&A opportunity for people to interact with each other. The UK-based Teachmeets and the Australian ones have used social media as a rallying point. In the US they’re running things called ‘ed camps’, which come out of the same basis of being grassroots movements. And once again, a lot of the information that drives that is through Twitter and so on. Linkedin is another area of potential connection as well. You’re a fan of Teachmeets – last year you helped organise Splendour In The Class in Newcastle. Are you still involved in that? Yes, the intent last year was to try and pull www.edutech.net.au

something like that off with absolutely minimal resource, and in the end we ended up charging I think it was $10 or $15, just to cover some catering costs, so that we could get some high school kids to do some catering. But, by and large, the rest of it was totally free and I guess it was about demonstrating that you can provide professional learning through connecting good people to share ideas about practice, it doesn’t have to be big budget conferences, you can run things in unconference formats using different presentation strategies and so on. Interesting though, with Teachmeets there’s still a very strong sense of ownership by the grass-

the thing, you know, people who’ve got good ideas, rather than simply keeping their head down in their little foxhole and just doing their innovation in their own room, maybe there’s some room for learning how to actually manage up, manage across, to build relationships, where sometimes leaders don’t actually lead innovation because they’re really not sure where to go. So, maybe sometimes grassroots innovators actually have a role in trying to manage up as well. Building relationships with people who can support the work they’re doing and champion it for them, as opposed to see it as a political risk that they’ve got to manage.

“Social media is basically about connections, it’s about being able to connect people in ways that go beyond their traditional networks.” roots movement if you like, and so for anyone who’s not actually a classroom teacher to be seen to be trying to develop ideas around that, you’ve got to tread very carefully, because there’s still some hierarchical thinking in people’s minds as to who should be engaged in that type of thing. Because I’ve been detached if you like now from the profession for a few months, I’m trying to look at ways that I can reengage with that sort of thing, without looking as though, here’s this old bloke trying to interfere with us at grassroots level, you know what I mean? There are sensitivities, and I guess that’s part of

You’re clearly a very busy man, but you took an early retirement in November. Was that so you could dedicate more time to things like presentation work and developing and presenting workshops? Yes, well basically it means I’ve got a bit more choice about where I direct my attention, it certainly means I can follow stuff that I’m passionate about, certainly in terms of workshop facilitation, presentation and that sort of thing, yes. Roger Pryor will be part of the breakout seminar stream on Day Two.
