Introduction We are proud to present our third Temple Shir Tikva Annual Report, featuring development and financial successes of the past year, along with programmatic and educational highlights, a new member profile section, and more. This Annual Report should provide a valuable glimpse into all the exciting events and offerings happening at Temple Shir Tikva. We are tremendously proud of our vibrant community and our dedication to fostering a welcoming, engaging, and inclusive environment. Additionally, we are pleased to share that due to the tremendous generosity of our congregation, we have, once again, surpassed our fundraising goal for the 2021-2022 Annual Fund campaign. This incredible level of Tzedakah demonstrates the strength and commitment of our community, and we hope to continue this success in the years to come. Earlier this year, members of the Temple participated in a URJ Congregational Survey, detailing the ways in which they felt connected to Temple Shir Tikva. The results of that survey revealed that our members find meaning through a variety of ways: connecting with our dynamic clergy, participating in enriching spirituality classes, engaging in our youth education programs and Early Learning Center, celebrating milestones and lifecycle events, and much more. In one member’s words, “every member is made to feel like an integral part of a close-knit family.” We offer our heartfelt gratitude for the meaningful support of our members who make up that family, and our warm wishes for a peaceful and reflective end of year and holiday season. A Message from the Clergy Later this month we will light our Chanukah candles and tell the story of the Maccabees. We will remember how against all the odds the people were able to band together and defeat the might of the Greek army. We will celebrate their faith when they lit that small vial of oil, not knowing how long it would last or when more would be ready. And we will rejoice in the light, recognizing how even a single candle has the power to extinguish the darkness and illuminate us all. While Chanukah tells the story of the Maccabees, it still resonates for us, and this year, feels especially powerful in the way that it connects with our Temple Shir Tikva story. Against the Odds: If you ever read news stories about organized religion in general, and about synagogues in particular, then it is likely that you have experienced some of the pessimism and negativity pervasive in the world right now. The overwhelming narrative is one of decline and stagnation – that is the story that people are telling. But that is far removed from our TST story. While other communities might have focused on the problems and the challenges, we have set our sights on the opportunities and the possibilities. The need for hybrid services has required a significant investment in our Sanctuary technology, and while this has benefited those joining us from the comfort of their homes, it has also improved the way services are experienced in the Sanctuary. The shift to Zoom school provided an opportunity for us to reimagine our Hineini (Religious School) program. Indeed, we have kept the learning of Hebrew largely online because we have discerned that these small-group classes are a better way for our children to learn a foreign language. And we have recognized the significant population shift that has taken place in MetroWest, affording us with a wonderful opportunity to engage with young families through our expanded Yeladim (young children) program at the Temple. Faith in the Future: We not only weathered the storm that was the period of Covid, but we were also able to continue investing in our community, reimagining what a synagogue should be, and dreaming about the possibilities that the future will bring. We have therefore emerged into

A Message from the Clergy this “post-pandemic” world with a vibrant and growing community that is focused on the unlimited potential of our congregation. While we do not typically emphasize the numbers, we are prepared to make an exception now, as the Temple is witnessing tremendous growth in membership, ELC enrollment, students in Hineini and AISH (our K-12 education programs), Adult Education, and community social events. We are excited for the opportunities that the future will bring, and the prospect of continuing to build Temple Shir Tikva as a synagogue, not just for today, but for tomorrow and beyond. Rejoicing in the Light: There is so much to celebrate that it is hard to know where to begin, but we wanted to focus on just a few of the ways that we have experienced the light of Temple Shir Tikva shining brightly – and we know this list could go on and on. The joint choirs of Temple Shir Tikva and the United Parish of Brookline singing together at the Church for Easter services and at the Synagogue for Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Blumberg returning to preach at Kol Nidrei, and now teaching a class with Rabbi Danny (Ad Meah v’Esrim – Until 120) for our senior members. The Toddler to Teen program being implemented by Alison Weikel and Stephanie Lerner in our schools, which has received national attention as an exemplar model. The investment in our space, led by Mary Beth Rettger and Jackie Loren, with newly painted classroom walls and a new welcoming entry way (with coffee coming soon!). Needless to say, the light of Temple Shir Tikva is burning brightly, and just as we increase the light on each subsequent night of Chanukah, we are confident in the way that our light will continue to grow and shine for our community, for MetroWest and the Greater Boston community, and far beyond our borders. We could not do a fraction of this work without the dedication, support, and care of our Temple Shir Tikva members and lay leaders who give tirelessly and generously in supporting our community. We also want to take a moment to thank the wonderful Board with whom we have the privilege of working and the exceptional staff who make this work not just a joy, but a pleasure. L'Shalom, Rabbi Danny Burkeman and Cantor Hollis Schachner

A Message from the President Hello fellow congregants, As I reflect on my first six months of being the President of Temple Shir Tikva, I see so much to be proud of, and so much to look forward to. We have been astonished by the growing interest in our community. More than 40 new families comprising 120 new members have become a part of our congregation since our Annual Meeting in June. These new members are joining from across age groups. We have welcomed young families, school-age families, and empty nesters, all eager to join our school, our social circles, and our worship to build their sense of belonging and meaning. Throughout this fall, I have watched with great appreciation as our clergy, professional staff, and volunteers have created opportunities to come together. Hineini, our Religious School, AISH, our teen program, and our Early Learning Center are all back in session, and the sound of children laughing and learning creates a vibrant energy all its own. Our Adult Community Engagement group, also known as ACE, has offered walks, talks, and other social events. Our amazing Adult Education committee has sponsored film and book discussions, with more events planned for the winter. Cantor Hollis brought in Artist-inResidence Mike Wirth to help us create a community art piece. This December, we welcome Cantor Rosalie Will who will guide us toward creating meaningful new opportunities for worship. The Temple is back in full swing, and I hope you can join us to take advantage of all we have to offer. As we head into this new year together, I want to let you know about some other significant projects we have recently completed, some you can see and some you cannot. We have finished the roof repair over the Religious School, allowing us to finally move forward with confidence on the long desired solar project. We have signed a letter of intent with Solect Energy to install panels on the roof and canopies in the parking lot. This project will provide 85% of our energy using green, renewable sources to help us meet our environmentallyconscious goal of approaching carbon neutrality. The challenges we have faced this year required critical investments for necessary repairs to keep our building safe and operational. We have been fortunate to be able to access some of our reserves to cover the cost of these improvements. But these investments have also depleted those reserves,

5

A Message from the President making the support of our community even more essential to the continued welfare of our building and the continuation of our mission. Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, we have completed multiple beautification projects including newly painted upstairs classrooms in bold colors taken directly from the Hineini and AISH logos, a revitalized landscape facing Boston Post Road increasing our curb appeal, and the lobby Gathering Space with new couches, chairs and tables, plus a coffee bar scheduled to open soon. Additionally, we have installed new technology: several new cameras and a large television for visual tefillah. We have also been awarded a $100,000 Federal security grant, giving us the ability to increase the safety of our building and our congregation. Finally, we have begun to employ our strategic plan to achieve our key tenets: a welcoming community, a culture of belonging, and a source of meaning. All of these values begin and end with you: our sacred community. I encourage you to join me in making Shir Tikva the Heart of Jewish Living and Practice in Metrowest. Because we cannot do it without you. B’Shalom, Jackie Loren President

TST Member Profile

The Price Family at Jenny's Bat Mitzvah

Wendy and Michael Price have been members of Temple Shir Tikva for more than 30 years, and in that time, they have seen and participated in a myriad of change and progress at the Temple. The Prices raised their three children, Jenny, Ben, and Nina here, and celebrated many lifecycle events as a family. In fact, Michael’s own Bar Mitzvah was officiated by Rabbi Blumberg, who also performed Wendy and Michael’s wedding ceremony, and most recently, co-officiated Jenny's wedding. To say that Shir Tikva has been a long-standing part of their lives is an understatement.

After decades of living in Wayland, the Prices moved to Boston a few years ago, and yet they have remained dedicated members of TST. As Wendy notes, “Even though we moved into the city, we wanted to stay connected to the Jewish community that was so integral to our lives. It also feels imperative to us to support Jewish life as a whole.” Noticeably, multi-generational member stories like those of the Prices are not uncommon in a special community like Shir Tikva’s. From the founding generation of TST congregants, to the scores of new members welcomed in recent years, the Temple’s numbers continue to grow and flourish. The Prices credit the clergy, namely Rabbi Blumberg, Cantor Hollis, and Rabbi Danny, for being deeply supportive of their family over the years. Michael notes that through their most vulnerable times, it was the outreach from the clergy that provided incredible comfort to him and his family. That level of comfort has persisted throughout the Prices’ tenure at Shir Tikva. They remark, “We walk into Shir Tikva, and feel so welcome.” There is a profound sense of comfort and ease from being surrounded by familiar people with whom one has journeyed through life.

TST Member Profile In the past few years, the Prices have been able to connect with those familiar people at the outdoor High Holy Day services held at Camp Chickami. The family views this new offering as an example of an inspiring recent innovation in Temple life. Michael loves the openness of the setting and the casual atmosphere and observes that the experience “has drawn me back into the religious part” of Shir Tikva. Wendy reflects on her Adult B. Mitzvah at the Temple, noting fondly her feelings of success in accomplishing the milestone event. More recently, Wendy turned to Mussar classes, which she first began as a means to participate in an activity with her friends. The group all quickly grew to love the learning and bonded together in their new Mussar connection. Their cohort completed the entire course track, and now Wendy hopes to begin the newly developed graduate level courses. Looking back, Wendy and Michael are reminded of all the benefits they have received as members of Temple Shir Tikva over the years, and how much it means to them to continue to invest in the Temple in return. Joining and maintaining their membership in the Koach Leadership Circle was a meaningful decision for them, as sustaining their spiritual home- no matter where they liveremains an important priority in their lives. The Prices are grateful for the long-standing Wendy and Michael Price relationship they have had with Shir Tivka and are eager to explore the coming years with the synagogue community.

Education EARLY LEARNING CENTER UPDATE This year, the Early Learning Center (ELC) is home to 52 students (47 families). Of these families, 14 are new! A few weeks ago, we hosted our first in-person curriculum night in three years, which included a group presentation and time in individual classrooms. The ELC continues to fully utilize the outdoor classroom spaces around Temple Shir Tikva and at Camp Chickami, ensuring the children spend ample amounts of time outside each day. Also, we have officially launched our Toddler to Teen initiative with our first joint professional learning opportunity for the combined group of ELC and Hineini/AISH K-12 teachers, focusing on nurturing the whole child through middot. The following is an excerpt of an article written by ELC Director Stephanie Lerner which was recently published by the Early Childhood Educators of Reform Judaism (ECE-RJ) organization.

If You Give A Four-Year-Old A Hammer: Teaching Collaboration in Early Childhood We often hear teachers speaking to young children about sharing and taking turns, but what does it look like to teach the essential life skill of collaboration?

Collaboration is a key component to the Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy of the Early Learning Center at Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland, MA – collaboration between children, between children and teachers, between home and school. Even the ways in which the children interact with materials is a collaboration. This collaboration began in our 4-year-old room where the teachers observed that building was a common thread that ran through the class. The teachers offered a variety of materials and made note of the types of structures the children were making. From there, the children and teachers co-constructed a curriculum about building and architecture. They looked at photos and illustrations of many

11

Education types of buildings and created skyscrapers that now line the walls of their classroom from floor to ceiling. Supporting the ongoing focus, the next logical step was to actually construct a building. Next, the teachers and students brainstormed a list of ideas they wanted to incorporate into the structure: the number of doors and windows, a rainbow rock path, and a chalk wall. As the director, I meet weekly with the classroom teachers, modeling and facilitating collaboration for our professionals. We then worked together to expand this project into a schoolwide collaboration, and asked the other teachers in our five classrooms of learners ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years of age, “What would you want to see included in our dream structure?” Plans for a sound wall, a magnet wall, a mud kitchen, and a garden soon emerged. We purchased materials and excitement for the project was palpable throughout the school. A basic tenet of Reggio is that children are valued as competent and capable. We supported our young learners as they took up real tools- hammers, sandpaper, nails, and got to work securing boards into place. There was a job for everybody – every ELC teacher, administrator, and student, even our youngest learners, not yet two years old, contributed to this project by weatherproofing boards, beading a curtain, or painting a rock to add to the rainbow rock path. I believe teachers who are engaged, flexible and invested in their children’s learning are the best teachers. By actively engaging in the process of learning with the children, and by providing them the opportunity to speak, not only did they hear and honor the children’s ideas, they facilitated a project that brought the ideas to life and empowered them to make decisions as part of a community of learners, allowing the children to shape their own learning. At the ELC, children are physically building with wood, hammer, and nails; they are building their brains and expanding their knowledge base; and they are collecting the social emotional tools necessary for collaboration.

12

Education Extending this collaboration further drew on the ELC's beautiful relationship with Rabbi Danny and Cantor Hollis, who are a beloved presence during our weekly Shabbat services. Upon completion of the building, it still felt as though something was missing. One of our teachers had been given a beautiful mezuzah, and we invited Rabbi Danny to offer a blessing as we hung it on the entrance. Each teacher and administrator took a turn in hammering in the mezuzah, as the children repeated the words of the blessing. One of our favorite teachings at Temple Shir Tikva comes from the Talmud and is an interpretation and play on words in Berakhot 54a: “And all your children shall be taught of Adonai, and great shall be the peace of your children” (Isaiah 54:13). The sages go on to instruct: Do not read [the word, banayikh] as your children, but as your builders [bonayikh]. Our children, our learners are those who will build peace for their generation. In this instance, we found that honoring their ideas, and trusting them to collaborate brought the entire school and synagogue together in a meaningful project that will forever be a tangible realization of our school and synagogue values.

Education K-12 LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT UPDATE This summer, in planning for the current school year, we debuted new logos for Hineini (K-6 learning), AISH (7-12 learning), the TSTeen programs, and Madrichim, our teen classroom leadership program. Our fresh new look (with a rainbow in our TST brand colors) reflects our commitment to inclusion of all kinds and our dedication to embrace and meet the needs of everyone who walks through the doors of TST for learning and engagement.

We currently learn with 234 students in Hineini, which includes 21 new families who have joined our program since last May. Additionally, there are 80 teens engaged in our many TSTeen offerings. In addition to AISH and Madrichim, we also offer TCubed, our monthly, peer-led Social Action group, and STIFTY, our Youth Group chapter, which just hosted a Northeast regional event, planned by our TSTeen leaders for 40 area teens! We believe that learning happens in relationships, so each learning session includes our community building and social emotional supportive practice of Bonim Banim (which translates to Building the Children). We are in the third year of co-creating our middot curriculum. Each month, learners engage with a different middah, or measure of a character trait, such as patience, courage, holiness, strength, and respect. We use these ancient Jewish concepts as lenses for learning our Torah stories, Jewish holidays, and considering issues

14

Education in our modern lives. Our flexible, small group online Hebrew decoding classes have also been successful and supportive in both the students’ learning and in families’ busy schedules. Our hope is that our students experience joy, community, and the kind of learning that encourages and inspires lifelong engagement with Judaism. 5782 was a great year for our teen programming at Shir Tikva, and we are excited for all that our teen leaders have planned for 5783. Some highlights from last year include our March New York City trip for 9th and 10th graders, our well-attended April Day of Service for Ukraine in partnership with JTI, which yielded hundreds of emergency care bags, soup kits, and hand-illustrated cards, and our May STIFTY youth group trip to Kimball Farms.

Already this 2022-2023 school year, Shir Tikva has held two successful overnight events – Havdalloween for our NFTY region held here at TST, and a kick-off retreat for our partner Team Teen Tikkun program with Temple Israel held at a local hotel. Highlights of the upcoming year include STIFTY’s Fall Festival, in which proceeds will benefit the JFS Family Table, the RAC L’Taken social action seminar for seniors in early December, another NYC trip in March, another day of service in April, and much more.

15

Education ADULT EDUCATION Adult Education programming at the Temple offered a wonderful assortment of programs and classes last year. The clergy led series on the Book of Psalms, Encountering the Ten Commandments, and Singing as a Spiritual Practice. The Temple was host to guest lecturers, including Alisa Ente, author of Walk in My Ways, and Peter Krause, who spoke about Two Peoples, One Land. Rabbi Professor Reuven Firestone served as the scholar-in-residence for a weekend, lecturing on the subject of Judaism and Islam. The Temple also featured a three-night course on pandemics in Jewish history. Additionally, the Book & Film Discussion Group was very active, viewing the film, Shalom Taiwan, followed by a discussion led by Boston Jewish Film Festival Artistic Director Lisa Gossels. Some of the books discussed included Atomic Anna, which featured a lively Zoom session engaging with the author, Rachel Barenbaum, Morningside Heights by Joshua Henkin, and Apeirogon by Colum McCann, with a discussion led by Rabbi Blumberg.

16

The Center for Jewish Spirituality The Center for Jewish Spirituality continues to thrive at Temple Shir Tikva with its offerings of Shabbat meditation on Friday nights and weekly Mindful Movement classes designed to embody and cultivate middot (soul traits) drawn from the spiritual practice of Mussar. This December, Cantor Rosalie Will will join us to guide our entire community through conversations, services, and learning about cultivating meaningful opportunities for worship at the Temple. Indeed, Spirituality at Shir Tikva has a far-reaching impact throughout the congregation, as the study of Mussar remains an integral part of the Hineini curriculum for our K-6 learners, and now, our ELC children will benefit as well, through the new Toddler to Teen program detailed above. Facilitators Caryl Shaw and Jay Gainsboro maintain the successful Mussar program through regular course offerings. In addition to the original levels of study offered, the Center for Jewish Spirituality has introduced two advanced Mussar classes for those students who have already completed four or more courses: Engaging Your Better Self in Difficult Conversations and Keeping Your Teshuvah Commitments Alive Throughout the New Year. Additionally, Cantor Hollis remains a steadfast contributor to the Center for Jewish Spirituality, having taught last winter's Singing as a Spiritual Practice course. Now, as she completes her Mussar training, Cantor Hollis is excited to launch her new Mussar course this spring, geared specifically to young parents. The practice of Mussar, a centuries old Jewish tradition, continues to resonate today with many who are on a journey of becoming better versions of themselves. The Center for Jewish Spirituality programs have provided spiritual nourishment for the body, mind, and soul to so many members of our sacred community.

17

Interfaith and Inclusion Temple Shir Tikva has partnered with other national and local Jewish organizations to join Thrive, The Jewish Coalition to Defend Trans and LGBQ+ Youth. Together our Jewish coalition will send a message: We affirm that every single person, of every gender and identity, is created b’Tzelem Elohim, in the Divine image. We are committed to pikuach nefesh, saving lives. We are proud that our young people are expressing their full selves. We refuse to push kids – or anyone – into narrow definitions of who they are and who they can be. We support parents and families who fight for their kids’ safety and dignity. As coalition partners, we at TST are invited to attend monthly coalition meetings and agree to galvanize our communities to advance and protect LGBTQ+ rights. We receive support and resources from Keshet, SOJOURN, and other Coalition members to share with our community. We are so excited to partner in this life-saving fight with Thrive. Additionally, Temple Shir Tikva hosted a Gender Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce this past year with members of staff and congregants. This Taskforce served as a steering committee to help assess and give feedback on where we are now as a community and where we want to head through the lens of Gender Inclusion. We created an organized set of both short- and long-term recommendations that we shared with the professional Leadership Team and Board of Trustees to inform future planning.

18

Adult Programmatic Highlights MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE The Mental Health Initiative (MHI) has continued to bring programming to Temple Shir Tikva that resonates with the emotional challenges that many have been experiencing, especially as we emerged from the pandemic. One example of this was inviting MIT Professor Dr. Daniel Jackson to speak about his book, Portraits of Resilience. He highlighted many college students who came back from the brink of suicide and emotional distress by finding purpose in their lives. Dr. Jackson referenced the Talmud to illustrate his points, and demonstrated that in stressful times when all seems lost, there often is a path towards hope and a bright future if we take the time and utilize the resources to find it.

ADULT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT At Temple Shir Tikva, our active Adult Community Engagement (ACE) group offers varied programs for adults that spanning many areas of interests. The goal is to provide adults with opportunities to meet other adults in the TST community while enjoying cultural, social, and outdoor activities. Past ACE activities have included progressive dinners, comedy nights, hikes, women’s nights out, monthly men’s coffees, as well as speakers. ACE is always developing new activities and welcomes programming ideas from the community.
