Chanukah spirit is in the air! I for one am hoping for a Chanukah miracle, perhaps the Temple renewal project will be completed a few months early and under budget! I know, not so likely, but a Rabbi can still hope, right?
I love Chanukah in Ottawa, at Temple Israel we know how to ensure that we shine bright and share warmth, especially when it’s dark and cold. This year, even as we do not have access to our facility, we have many plans underway.
• We have the opportunity to connect with our friends at Poteach Shearim in Northern Israel for a pre Chanukah virtual chat on Thursday, December 11th midday. We can share our perspectives across the water as we continue to build our connection.
• Our TIRS students are hard at work preparing a Chanukah infused medley to KPop Demon Hunters. At Shabbat services on December 12th, they will present their masterpiece. Potluck dinner to follow; we’ll provide the latkes. We’re also hosting Cantor Malecki that weekend.
• We’re taking Chanukah on the road; thankfully our Chanu-SKI-ah was built to travel. On Sunday, December 14th, for the first night of the festival we’re visiting Barrhaven. Whether you live in the area or not, come join us as we share our festival lights with our famous menorah.
• A treat for our seniors - we’re taking you out to brunch! You do so much for us, let us take care of you. On Monday, December 15th we’ve arranged a lovely lunch with a Chanukah flavour.
• On Friday, December 19th, the Temple Israel Liturgical Choir will take the lead at Shabbat services lifting our spirits with song.
• Last but not least, we’re heading to the slopes on Sunday, December 21st. What can be better than skiing and donuts?
Chanukah is our opportunity to proudly share our Jewish spirit, recognizing the light we carry within. I recognize that these continue to be fragile times, I pray that we nurture our strength and appreciate the blessings in our midst. I’m eager to celebrate with you!
Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg

As your incoming President, I reach out to you, both proud and happy, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This is not just a personal milestone—it is a collective journey we will embark on together, fueled by dedication, creativity, and unity.
Leadership is never a solo endeavour. While I am prepared to guide our organization into the future, I want to share with all of you that true success comes from the strength of our community. That is why I am calling on each of you, to volunteer. Your time, energy, and ideas are needed as the lifeblood of our mission; together we can achieve more than any one person could alone.
Our doors are open wide to families who wish to join as new members. This year we have welcomed over 40 families with children, without children, spanning ages and different walks of life. Everyone is welcome at Temple, as we can all confirm. Every new face brings fresh energy, perspectives, and stories that enrich our community. Whether you are just beginning your journey with us or have been here for generations, you are part of the fabric that makes us strong.
We thrive because we build bridges across generations, partnerships, and interests. The wisdom of experience blends seamlessly with the innovation of youth, creating a dynamic environment where ideas flourish. Our partnerships— within our Temple community and beyond—ensure that we remain connected, relevant, and impactful.
Behind the scenes, our Board members are smart, diverse, and unafraid to think out of the box. Their varied backgrounds bring a richness of perspective that allows us to tackle challenges creatively and strategically. Together, we form a foundation of leadership that supports our vision and drives us forward within our sacred Jewish community that some of us call ‘Our Home away from Home’.
This is a moment of renewal – with our New Temple building being built ‘as we speak’. So many possibilities lie ahead. With pride in our past and excitement for our future, I invite you to come with me. Let us work, play and pray together - hand in hand - across generations and backgrounds, to build a community that is welcoming, resilient, and forward-thinking.
Please join me on this journey as we move forward from 2025 into 2026, one week at a time, one Shabbat at a time. Welcome aboard!
Merle Haltrecht-Matte

Sensing Shabbat - From the smell of the challah, to the glow of the candles, to the taste of the wine, Shabbat combines all of our senses, culminating in a holy experience. Let’s explore the various senses of Shabbat with rabbinical student, Sue Potechin.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2025
Once a month we are delighted to host our famous potluck dinners following services. We're all part of the family. Bring a vegetarian dish to share. No need to RSVP, all are welcome.

Our youngest of friends (ages 2-8) are invited to celebrate Shabbat with song, story and fun. We’ll build our Shabbat toolboxes, helping us feel confident to take these rituals home. Pizza dinner to follow.

Traditionally the Israelites cross the Sea of Reeds as we read Parashat Beshallach. Of course they did so in song and dance. With the help of Cantor David Malecki and the TI Liturgical Choir, we will harmonize our voices as one for this musical Shabbat experience.

We’re a little early for planting, but we can prepare our painting flower pots! As we eagerly await the spring, let’s get ready as we dedicate our creative energies to fostering natural beauty. Woven within we’ll highlight the Tu B’Shvat festival with teachings from Rabbi Mikelberg.
Details and cost will be sent closer to event. Participants are responsible for the cost of their materials.
Just like saplings, our youngest of friends (ages 2-8) are growing so fast. We’re called to do the best that we can to ensure that all can grow and blossom with love. With song, story and care our youngest of friends are invited for this Shabbat focused on the world. Pizza dinner to follow.

There were many orange shirts worn and much emotion in evidence at the Saturday morning Truth and Reconciliation service September 27th.
In December 2022, Ottawa visual artists the late Michael Parkin of Temple Israel, and Simon Brascoupé, Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, First Nation of Maniwaki, Quebec, unveiled their collaborative artwork to co-create an artistic expression of Temple Israel’s Land Acknowledgment. While Simon had planned to speak at the Truth and Reconciliation Shabbat on the 27th, he was unable to join in person at the last minute.
However, he provided a text, which was read by Temple member Charlie Khazzam. In his words, Simon said he wanted to “commemorate the life and work of my friend and collaborator, the artist Michael Parkin… From those first exchanges, I knew we were embarking on more than just an art project, we were beginning a journey of friendship and reconciliation.”
He thanked Fran Klodawsky and Ruth Phillips for bringing the two artists together. “Michael embodied many of the qualities that reconciliation requires - patience, openness, and a willingness to listen deeply,” Simon wrote. “These qualities made it possible for us to envision creating art together that would reflect both of our cultures and our shared values.”
They decided on a tree as the central image of their piece. “For both Jewish and Algonquin cultures, the tree represents life, strength, continuity and the rootedness of our values.”

“Today, as we remember Michael, we honour not only his art but his spirit of friendship, collaboration, and reconciliation. The artwork we began together is not just about images or materials; it is about the relationships it represents. It is about Jewish and Algonquin communities standing together, finding shared symbols, and walking the path of truth and reconciliation together.”
Other parts of the service included selected Truth and Reconciliation readings by community members, bannock baked by Merle Haltrecht-Matte and Margot Montgomery, and a reading by Raphaelle Beddows-Aronovitch, the niece of Kathy Beddows who had shared her knowledge of Indigenous culture with the community at last year's Truth and Reconciliation Service.
The morning was planned by Truth and Reconciliation Committee co-chairs Margot Montgomery and Shirley Siegel and their committee.
As Shirley reflected, "This year’s special Shabbat was such a meaningful and moving experience for me especially in the sharing of Simon’s beautiful and heartfelt letter about his friend and artistic collaborator, Michael Parkin - their relationship was a true example of reconciliation."

Temple Israel is Ottawa’s Reform congregation where Jewish Life Happens -- committing ourselves to Kehilah K’lal Yisrael, and Tikun Olam.
We are a dynamic and welcoming congregation (Kehilah) where varied Jewish experiences offer pathways to learn and to experience G-d for all, respecting tradition and creating new celebrations.
We are an active liberal presence in the larger Jewish community (K’lal Yisrael).
We strive through social action to fulfill the Mitzvot of caring for others (Gimilut Chasadim) and repairing the world (Tikun Olam).
