as we know it Lena and Coby Cockburn live at Dunsborough Lakes with their two children Lily (5) and Wally (4). They also own and run Dunsborough’s popular Blue Manna Bistro restaurant. Now it’s Lena’s turn for a grilling as she opens up on life at the Lakes, favourite local hangouts and her perculiarly intense passion for houseplants…

How long have you lived at Dunsborough Lakes?

We’ve lived here for approaching three years after moving from Yallingup. We considered buying a bush block somewhere but chose Dunsborough Lakes in the end because of its close proximity to town. At the time of building our home we were also fitting out our restaurant so it was good to keep the travelling time down. Plus it’s a lot easier when you have small kids to be close to town and don’t have to drive everywhere.

What made it an attractive place to live for you?

Location was a big factor – close to the beach, close to town, close to work and close to friends! We also liked the fact it was very tidy with lots of green spaces, which I think is important for families.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

We go to the beach at least once a week. Taking the kids and our dogs there is a great way to relax after a big week at work. We mostly go to the dog beach at the end of Geographe Bay Road which is hardly ever busy, or to the old Dunsborough boatramp to have a play at the playground and a sausage sizzle. We also like to camp and take the boat out.

Anything else?

It’s always good to meet up with friends at a winery (there are still so many we haven’t tried yet!) or one of the local breweries whenever we can. Our favourite winery is the Rosily Vineyard in Wilyabrup and Wild Hop Brewing in Yallingup is always a nice place to go with the kids. Country Life Farm on Caves Road is popular with the kids too.

What amenities close to home are most important to you?

Definitely the playgrounds for the kids and the footy fields for running the dogs. Coby likes the golf course but doesn’t get to play as much as he would like

because of his commitments at the restaurant. His favourite hole is the 10th and his best score for 18 holes is 72. Well, that’s what he tells me anyway!

What about schools?

Our kids go to Dunsborough Primary School which our kids absolutely love. Their teachers are amazing.

Have you made many new friends since moving here?

Yes we have. The restaurant has an amazing local following, which has introduced us to lots of new people. We don’t have family close by, but we are never short of friends we can call on if we need help or just someone to talk to. We also live in a great street with neighbours regularly catching up on the front lawn for a cold beverage or two. There’s a really strong sense of community.

Do you socialise much at home?

All the time. We love to have friends around for dinner. We just got a pizza oven so pizza nights are big at the moment and fresh seafood of course.

Why did you choose to build rather han buy an existing home?

The price was very similar and by building ourselves we felt we could really make the house our own. We chose a design by Country Builders and the whole process was a breeze. For the interior we took a lot of inspiration from the Country Builders display home.

How would you describe your design style?

I probably wouldn’t call it a certain style. Our house is very open – entrance, living, dining and kitchen are all one big area and that’s where most of our family life happens. We love to socialise and food is an important factor in that. In his free time Coby likes carpentry so we also have some beautiful shelving, which are filled by my plant addiction!

hen you live at Dunsborough Lakes local beaches are part of your backyard and the ocean is your very own private pool.

The nearest beach, at Geographe Bay, is just minutes away, so you're free to swim, fish or float your boat whenever the mood takes you.

Travel less then half an hour and you can expand your sandy horizons to take in some of the region's most celebrated coastal playgrounds at Meelup Beach, Injidup Beach and the rock and froth majesty of Cape Naturaliste and its iconic lighthouse. If you're lucky, occasionally you might even get a beach all to yourself or, better still, get to share it with a visitor or two from out of the blue; dolphins, turtles and humpback whales are all native to the local marine community.

As well as its beautiful stretches of sand the south west is also renowned for its surf. The region boasts over 100 breaks. Occy's Food & Brews Funky, laid-back and local. Located in the heart of Dunsborough, Occy's serves hearty, homecooked and seriously tasty meals in portions that will make you wonder if the waiter has mistaken you and your family for a pride of lions. There's plenty of nonseafood on offer, but anyone crazy enough to look past the beer-battered fish and chips or signature Occy's salad is destined for a lifetime of regret.

Blue Manna Bistro A Dunsborough favourite, this Asianinfluenced seafood bistro is the result of a business collaboration between a chef and fishmonger – and it delivers everything the combination promises. Line-caught fish, squid, prawns, crab are all on the menu, each transformed into a unique flavour journey that explores the sour, salty, hot, sweet and all points in between.

Yarri Restaurant & Bar Fine dining restaurant that celebrates local ingredients, not least the region's abundant seafood, in casually stylish surroundings in central Dunsborough. For a close-up view of the action, pull up a stool at the kitchen bar and watch chef and co-owner Aaron Carr and his team create their Japaneseinfluenced dishes in a tumult of fast-moving pans, bubbling pots and expertly-aimed flames.

Wild Hop Brewing Family-owned, family-run and fabulously family-friendly brewery/bar/ restaurant on Wildwood Road, Yallingup. Great beer. Delicious wood-oven cooked sharing plates.

Eagle Bay Brewing One of the pioneers of the south west brewing scene, the Eagle Bay brew crew have been mashing beers since 2010. Order a pizza and a paddle (tasting flight of beers), take a pew with a view in the garden of their Eagle Bay farm-cum-brewery HQ and say goodbye to the afternoon.

Black Brewing Co Another nearby microbrewery (Wilyabrup) serving a rotating range of frothy delights, from traditonal pale ales to IPAs, lagers, stouts and even a sour or two. A seasonal range of reliably delicious snacks and sharing plates are also available to help soak up the fluids – when the food's this good eating is definitely not cheating!

T

he Margaret River wine region is world famous. Tourists travel from far and wide just to experience it briefly. From Dunsborough Lakes you can walk to the nearest winery in a few minutes and over 100 more are, literally, just down the road.

If, once a week, you decided to visit a different winery within a 30-minute drive of Dunsborough Lakes, it would take over two years to tick them all off. Not all have their own restaurants but plenty do, and the food they put on your plate is often just as impressive as the wines they fill your glass with.

Palmers Winery, just a few minute’s walk from the estate, has been making wines since 1977 – and all that practice has paid off with numerous national and international awards. Their Tuscan-style restaurant is perennially popular with

locals and visitors, delivering delicious dishes that elevate local ingredients to stratospheric levels of flavour and finesse.

Wise Vineyard Restaurant on Eagle Bay Road, where you can wine and dine while taking in glorious ocean views, is another local favourite.

A short drive south along Caves Road towards Margaret River opens up even more possibilities. For a casual outdoor lunch and a sensational Chardonnay (or two) swing by at Swings & Roundabouts or hang a right down Quininup Road and experience the boutique charms of the Arimia Estate vineyard (pictured above) where their 'off-grid' kitchen cooks up sublime dishes made from ingredients grown and reared on site.

Further south towards Margaret River

major players including Vasse Felix and Cullen Wines rub shoulders with smaller independents, providing access to an incredible variety of wines – from large production Cab Savs for the international market to micro-batches of artisan whites.

Almost all wineries have a cellar door where you can sample and purchase their latest creations. The big brands are, of course, always worth a visit but the smaller producers are not to be overlooked. By dropping in on boutique enterprises such as House of Cards, Snake and Herring or Stonefish, you may stumble upon some unexpectedly spectacular treasures. For that reason, as any local will tell you, it's always a good idea to clear some space in your car boot whenever you leave home.
