Improved Highway Project Implementations to Enhance the Commuter Experience on the Highways The Indian road and highways network accounts for the second largest stretch in the world. With the kind of initiatives and projects, the infrastructural aspect of the same has experienced a rapid growth and development over the course of time. The sector that has experienced the maximum amount of impact in terms of change is the highway sector. Every aspect of highway operations has transformed the outlook and functionality of the high ways that promote a better experience for the commuters. Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, CGM (IT and Highway Operations) of NHAI who is also the head of highway operations in India is the one responsible for the successful implementation of a number of highway projects. He is the man behind some of the most renowned highway projects which have impacted the overall highway operations. Some of the operational projects that Mr Srivastava has supervised include that of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) and Wayside Amenities. Under the Wayside Amenities project, the Highway Nest and Highway Nest (Mini) are the ones that are currently operational. The Highway Village is in progress but because of the wide spectrum of required land and resources, it is taking time to be executed. The Implementation of these Wayside amenities has ensured to ease a commuter’s journey on the national highways. These amenities offer a wide range of refreshments and a rest stop for the highway users to stop and refresh themselves. The other operational project is the Electronic Toll Collection, which is a project that Mr Srivastava is continuously working on to improve. As per his vision, he is working to ensure that every toll booth across the country has one lane dedicated to ETC which will be beneficial for reducing traffic congestion at the toll booths and also promote transparency and efficiency with the process of tax collection. He is currently working on the new initiative of GPS based tolling in which the commuters will only have to pay for the amount of distance travelled by them on the highways.

Technology is yet another aspect that Mr Akhilesh Srivastava is working on with regards to highway operations. He is planning on integrating drones for better highway maintenance and real-time monitoring of the ongoing highway projects. It has also imbibed better transparency in the entire workflow which is an added bonus. He has even been encouraging the youth of India to take up the training on the same because of the improving chances of employment in that sector. Every aspect of highway modernisation is under the strict supervision of Mr Srivastava and he is doing an impeccable job of executing them. In a recent conference at Singapore, conducted by the International Road Federation of Geneva, he discussed on the subject of modernisation of the highways and the various aspects related to it. He even emphasised on the aspect of Electronic Toll Collection along with the importance of budget allocation for better execution. Mr Srivastava even addressed over 300 delegates as a keynote speaker at the Chemical and Industrial Disaster Management Conference from March 1415, 2018 in Gujarat.
