Golf Academy

The last time I drove across the moors from Pickering to Whitby was many years ago, the skyline was then still dominated by the three structures resembling huge golf balls that were part of the early missile warning system at Fylingdales. Those recognisable remnants of the Cold War have since been replaced by an edifice that reminds you of an Inca temple, but the function is still to protect the nation from ballistic missiles. It is a bleak if starkly beautiful landscape, picturesque in summer but cruel in winter, and fortunately we were to be blessed with seven days of glorious weather to enjoy the region.

The moors have much to attract and entertain the visitor, quite apart from the sheer beauty of the landscape. For the railway enthusiast it is a mecca, with the N Yorks Moors Railway, the World’s Most Popular Heritage steam railway, which runs from Grosmont to Pickering, from the base which houses the workshops. We had booked to travel on the heritage diesel, pulling Pullman coach number 79, and having lunch in style during the journey along the valley of the River Usk, passing through Goathland, Newtondale and Levisham to Pickering. A delightful way to spend Sunday and a great way to whet the appetite before a visit to the National Railway Museum at York. By a stroke of extreme good fortune our friends had rented a wonderful accommodation, Riverside Cottage in Littlebeck, nestling alongside the river in a beautiful valley. An idyllic location to savour for a week, whilst golfing and travelling about the area. With brown trout in the river running just yards from the front door it could verily be described as paradise. The mill was famous for many years because of the craftsmanship of Tom Whittaker who resided there. He was a wood carver who made oak furniture with a honeycomb effect, created by his use of the adze. His work was mainly by commission, and he marked it with his trademark gnome. Fortunately his work can be seen in many churches or inns in the locality.

WHITBY & NORTH YORKSHIRE

With Whitby close at hand, there was no shortage of good places to eat, especially the world famous fish and chips restaurants, of which Trenchers and The Magpie are the most well known. The temptation was too great to resist and we succumbed twice to the aroma of cooking as we passed by.

The course was most enjoyable to play, ideal for holiday golf, memorable for the excellent greens and not too long, but still enough of a test with some very unusual hazards. With a cliff top siting, the wind is all important, and very tough when it is blowing off the North Sea.

After two days of sightseeing the clubs began to stir in the boot and it was off to Whitby Golf Club to play. Whitby is a very friendly club set high on the cliff top overlooking the harbour, with panoramic views out to the North Sea and the nearby beaches from Sandsend to Kettleness. Whitby Golf Club was formed in 1891 as a six hole course on the village common at Goathland, eight miles out of town. It was a risky place to play as the course criss crossed and ran along the roadside. So much so that the club issued notices denying liability for any accidents that occurred as a result of errant golf shots. As a consequence the club decided to relocate to the present site on the cliff tops above the town, laying out nine new holes on both sides of the railway, which can still be identified by part of the bridge structure adjacent to the 6th fairway. Over the years the course was extended, firstly to fifteen holes in 1921, then to the full eighteen holes in 1930. Since that period new holes have had to be constructed to compensate for the effects of coastal erosion.

After an enjoyable round of golf and afternoon tea, there was still time to explore the town of Whitby, which is graced by views south over the harbour up to St Mary’s Church, the monument and the ruins of the St Hilda’s Abbey. There are 199 steps to climb to see it close up. It is easy to see how Bram Stoker got his inspiration for Dracula when he stayed at the Royal Hotel in the 1890’s and looked across the river toward the ruins.

The club manager made us most welcome and set us off to play the links famed for the huge Upgang Ravine which traverses the course, and which is a testing challenge to drive over whilst playing the 6th hole and again on the way home at the 18th the finishing hole.. The way across is by a narrow footbridge , which is itself a challenge for those who fear heights. The sea views are spectacular playing the early holes, and as far as the 9th hole, when it is time to cross the road. On the opposite side of the road are seven holes that are quite a contrast, rolling parkland style but with clever use of streams to test the approach play.

The high ground to the North of the river has the famous the whale bone arch, the monument to the men who went whaling from the port. In the harbour there is a reminder of the most important man associated with the town of Whitby. A replica of The Endeavour, the ship of Captain Cook. Cook lived and learned his seamanship in Whitby before he joined the Royal Navy and began his days of exploration. Captain Cook literally sailed the seven seas in his four ships, from the bleak Antarctic to the Pacific Islands, his voyages made a model for others to follow. The museum in Grape Lane in the town is a treasure trove of information about the renowned sailor and explorer. The region simply abounds with things to do and see, unspoilt fishing villages like Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay, towns and villages on the moors, so much so that seven days merely scratched the surface, and set a positive agenda for another return visit.
