Scottish golf ‘in decline, at a crossroads’

Scottish Golf chair Eleanor Cannon says the organisation must make changes to attract nongolfers. Following chief executive Blane Dodds’ resignation and move to Tennis Scotland, and ahead of a national conference, Cannon said: ‘I think that it is an incredibly important moment for golf in Scotland.’ Cannon told BBC Scotland before a summit in Edinburgh: ‘The game is in decline and we want to grow stronger clubs and we want to attract people to play golf once more. ‘We only have 14 per cent of our members are female. We’re not far off 50 per cent of the working population being female so we really need to bring change into the game such that we attract non-golfers.’ Scottish professional and former Open champion Paul Lawrie recently urged clubs to reduce the price of golf, and prior to his departure and against a backdrop of a potential budget cut of around ÂŁ400,000, Dodds proposed raising an extra ÂŁ4million in revenue to help grow amateur golf through clubs. Suggested measures included raising the annual fees accrued from club members from ÂŁ11.25 to ÂŁ24 and the introduction of a new international tax for overseas visitors playing in Scotland. ‘We’ve listened, it was always a period of consultation,’ said interim chief executive Cannon. ‘We need to get this right and we need to help clubs and members understand what the very real issues are because what we’ve realised is the urgency of the situation. ‘The funding from government has dropped quite significantly and sure, there are options as to how we can address that funding drop and part of that is reducing the services that Scottish Golf offers. ‘But, we’re not about to come up with a random figure that says, this is what we’re going to put affiliation fee to. The purpose of the summit is to say to our audience and to work with them to say, “What would you like from us to address these challenges? Because we’re all in this together. What would you like from us and we will cost thatâ€?. ‘And if that means we cut back services, then we will do that but if we cut back services we will only accelerate the decline.’

Tommy, who lived in Jersey, played for Great Britain and Ireland in the 1975 and 1977 tournaments, both of which were won by the United States.

PGA chief executive Robert Maxfield said: ‘Despite his success at the game’s highest level, Tommy was first and foremost a PGA professional ‘He flew the flag for the association at every opportunity, especially during his year as captain.

Tommy Horton: ‘Flew the flag for the PGA’

He also won four European Tour events and 23 events on the European Seniors Tour, where he was very successful, topping its money list in 1993 and a further four times between 1996 and 1999.

Former Ryder Cup golfer Tommy Horton has died at the age of 76.

Tommy was taken ill at the Royal Jersey Golf Club and died shortly after in hospital.

‘The days when club professionals like Tommy could excel on the Tour are long gone but he never lived in the past and was always mindful of the game’s future.’

DISABILITY EVENT Public ‘do not ON NATIONAL LIST want resort’ England Golf will launch a disability championship for the first time in 2019, as part of its calendar of events. Over the past two years, England Golf has worked with the charity BALASA Golf to shape a national championship and it has now been confirmed that England Golf will take sole responsibility for this event from 2019. This will be the first time that the England Golf championship programme has included a disability event and it underlines the organisation’s commitment to being customer focussed.

The championship will offer a competitive opportunity to golfers who are an important part of the game – and their views are being sought to shape the event. Disabled golfers, both club members and non-members, are invited to complete a short survey about the type of event they would like. A proposed new golf resort in Merseyside does not have the support of public opinion, says MP. Wirral Council says the plan for two courses in Hoylake would create jobs, but Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood said the area was liable to flooding, and 3,700 people signed a petition against the proposed Hoylake Golf Resort, which includes plans for a hotel and conference centre, and 150 executive homes. Wirral Council leader Phil Davies said the resort would create hundreds of jobs for local people and support businesses, draw extra visitors and generate revenues for public services. He added it would ‘cement Wirral’s leadership position with the international golf community’ after the area hosted The Open four times since 2006. Ms Greenwood said she had received hundreds of messages against the golf resort and around 20 in support: ‘This suggests public opinion is against the resort and I would urge the council to recognise this.’ Phil Simpson, from the Stop Hoylake Golf Resort Campaign, said there was a ‘lack of any demand for yet another golf course in an area already saturated with courses’. He said it could lead to the destruction of a local wildlife site and the loss of greenbelt land. Alternative plans for an ‘eco-golf’ resort, and a wildfowl and wetland centre, were also presented at the meeting, the authority was set to consider funding options before a public consultation and planning application in 2018, council spokesman said.

New rule switches off golf’s armchair referees Television viewers can no longer interfere with match results by drawing attention to golfer’s mistakes which have been missed by on-course officials.

Lexi Thompson: Penalised four strokes after TV viewer intervened

A new rule has been introduced which will avoid the farce that resulted in four strokes being added to Lexi Thompson’s card at the ANA Inspiration event in California. On that occasion, an emailer alerted referees to the fact that the American star had erroneously replaced her ball during the third round. It came to a light a day later, but in time for

her to be docked two strokes for playing a short putt from the wrong position and a further two-shot penalty for signing for the wrong third-round score. These sanctions effectively cost her the Major title.

Now the game’s rule makers, the R&A and United States Golf Association, have introduced a rule, effective from this month, that says viewer interventions will be ignored. The penalty for unwittingly signing for the wrong scorecard in such circumstances has been scrapped.

the kind of mistakes that used to be picked up by alert viewers. ‘In many quarters, these armchair officials were described as nothing more than interfering busy bodies, but the fact is their actions helped to ensure correct scoring.

It brings golf in line with other major sports where TV spectators cannot influence events, even when they spot a blatant rules breach.

‘Nevertheless it was a deeply unsatisfactory way to conduct professional sport. The rules should be administered by referees and by the golfers themselves.’

BBC Golf Correspondent Iain Carter commented: ‘One or more television rules officials will monitor coverage, looking to spot

Thompson said of the changes: ‘In my case, I am thankful that no-one else will have to deal with an outcome such as mine in the future.
