USEFUL INFORMATION FOR COURSE REPS HINTS AND TIPS  

Make yourself known to the students on your course – have a chat and mention that you are a Course Rep and if they have any problems they should come to you. Meet your School Reps – They are there to help you! If you don’t have any issues that you need help with, pop along to say hi and let them know about issues you have dealt with successfully. School Reps will be able to feed back this positive information to the School and Students’ Union.

DEALING WITH ISSUES 

Make sure you gather as much information as possible about the issue and who is affected. This makes sure that you know exactly how it’s affecting your cohort, and how you’ll need to approach the problem.

Find out what outcome students’ want when they raise an issue. If you do not know what they want – then you will not know what you are aiming to do. If you approach staff with a problem, it’s always a good idea to be able to let them know the desired outcome.

Always keep students informed. If a student has informed you of a problem, keep them updated on what you are doing, even if it’s just waiting on a reply from a member of staff. This lets students’ know that you are dealing with their issue.

Always speak to the person concerned before contacting a more senior member of staff. If a student is having an issue with a lecturer, you should speak to that lecturer before complaining about them to their manager or leader. University staff are just like everyone else and can suffer from bereavement, relationship breakdowns etc. Always take this into consideration. Send them an email or pop along to their office for a chat.

Speak to other Course Reps to get someone else’s opinion on a situation – they may have had a similar issue and can let you know what their outcome was. A second opinion never hurts!

Ellie Kendrick is the Representation Co-ordinator and has an open door policy. If you are ever struggling with an issue or have a query, she will be more than happy to talk to you about it.
