ITS NOT A COSTUME

I

t has been a little over three years since we have published our TEENVIEW magazine in the Wichita and surrounding areas. Still, I am not sure many of you know exactly what this publication means, and I think it is important that you do.

HOPELESSNESS Some years ago, as I tried to empower a group of young people at the local Boys and Girls Club, I noticed that I was starting to become ineffective. I regrouped and began to offer up some of my best presentations that would inspire a nation; yet, these few students were not moved. After a while, I stopped with the presentation (feeling a bit insecure in my ability to teach) and flat out asked the students, “What’s going on?”. They responded, “Mr. Murphy, we like you and appreciate what you are doing. We just don’t believe that what you are saying is possible for us.” I’ll never forget that day. In fact, I thought about it for a long time. These kids “are” hopeless. There is nothing I can say that can move them from this state. Hopelessness eats away at your will, conceals your dreams and smothers your passion... For the young, it steals the possibilities of the future. I knew that my purpose in “Nourishing My Brother” would be fulfilled in restoring hope to a hopeless generation. So after some thought and a great deal of prayer, it occurred to me that if the students could somehow touch their dream, then they would see it possible to obtain. Our youth needed to realize that their lives are significant, and that their views matter… and so was “birthed,” The TEENVIEW Magazine! Producing a magazine would allow them to meet people, attend events, research careers and experience opportunities that they could, otherwise, only dream. They could write about them for their peers to also learn from their experiences. It was a great idea! The students had a sense of restored hope as we worked to make this project happen. The only challenge was that I didn’t know how to produce a magazine by myself. It was no surprise that it took us a whole year to get the first one out, and then, another year for the second one. GIFTS WITHIN After a while and with little community support, we shelved the TEENVIEW project. We worked to put on events to try and raise money which turned out to be a BIG Fail! For those of you who may remember, Unity Ball/ Day 26 in 2009! Time went on and some of the original TEENVIEW Members said that we should “bring the magazine back.” It was 2012 when we partnered with MindFire Academy to do a summer program. We took about 10 kids and trained them to use Mac computers, taught them Illustrator and Photo Shop. None of the students had ever worked with computers on this level. They helped design the first magazine in September 2012. In November, we produced another magazine. We decided to produce a monthly magazine in January of 2013. The students are trained to not only write the articles, but, also to work on the layout, take pictures, work the website and even produce a TV show. We remind them that they have the “Gifts Within” to accomplish whatever their heart’s desire. Every year, students “graduate out” and new ones come in. We have clubs in surrounding schools and reach about 103 students in our network directly. Some students have gone on to receive big college scholarships, better jobs and unique opportunities because of their involvement with TEENVIEW Magazine. It is my goal to increase our effectiveness and reach students from Junior High through college. I hope to give them stronger skills in media arts, financial literacy, business etiquette (“soft skills”) and career development.

The Oxford dictionary defines cultural appropriation as the “unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society. Examples are wearing a native american headdress when you ARE NOT Native American. Wearing a sari and you ARE NOT Indian. Wearing cornrows and you ARE NOT African American. Wearing a sombrero and you ARE NOT Mexican. When people dress or steal from other cultures it rarely has to do with knowledge about the culture but more about taking advantage of a certain group of people. Think about this. Is it ghetto when a black woman wears her hair in cornrows but praised when white women wear them? Do you make fun of the way asian people speak but when someone of another race gets a tattoo in Mandarin Chinese and it’s all of a sudden cool? The next time you see something you like from a different culture enjoy it, compliment them, but know that’s for them to keep. People’s cultures are not your costumes, your playground, and definitely not for your benefit.

Hush...

If your a makeup lover but don’t want to spend money on 49$ palettes and 15$ lipsticks then hush is the app for you. Hush is a affordable and great place to shop for eyeshadow palettes and other beauty products. I was very sceptical at first but after my first purchase I was truly shocked at how good they were for that price and how many eyeshadow palette dupes there truly was. Now not everything is fine and Daisy. The downside to some of the products is how much fall out there is. Some eyeshadows are chalky and others are creamy. On the other hand they are super pigmented.

Today I will be reviewing the sugar palette by face candy. This palette is a dupe for the peach palette by Anastasia Beverly hills. Unlike the peach palette the sugar palette does not smell sweet and can be a little chalky for the mattes, meanwhile the shimmers are very creamy. There are lots of fallout sadly but it is highly pigmented. If I were to give this a rating I would give it a 4 because it’s definitely not better than the peach palette but it is still great for people who are on a budget and love makeup. This palette was 10$ and shipping took about 7-8 days. If you don’t like the palette than within 14 days of receiving the product you can return it if it is in opened and unused. So I’m gonna show you a tutorial for how to make a cute eye look with this palette.

4.

1. First get your face primed and do your eyebrows as normally and prime those eyelids. I am using the urban decay eyeshadow primer potion and dipbrow pomade by Anastasia Beverly hills.

2. 3.

I lastly add highlight to the brow bone and the inner corners of her eyes using hut$la baby by fenty beauty Rihanna. Lasty I put some winged eyeliner on called tattoo liner by Kat Von D and mascara called better than sex by too faced.

I get my suger palette out by face candy and for the base color I use glazed and candy and blend candy more so into the crease.

I use chocolate cake and hot cocoa in the crease more and blend it out , them I get a tougher brush so I can pack on the shimmers to the lid. I use sugar & spice and cinnamon sugar to give it a more shiny effect.

draft board AJ McDaniel

The MLB draft is the only professional sports draft that allows players to be drafted right out of high school. This year the high school graduating class of 2018 saw 21 players make it to some level of professional baseball, just in the first round. The reason the MLB has done this for so long is because of all the different levels of competition baseball has. Professional baseball has three major levels that are all connected to each other the Majors which is your televised all the time MLB, the minors a.k.a. as AA, (double “a”) and AAA(triple “a”) every major league team owns both a minor and a AAA team that they bring players up from when major leaguers get hurt. A major reason for continually allowing high school players to come straight to the pros is due to some of the exciting star talent that has come straight out of high schools across America. Big name players including Carlos Correa, Addison Russell, Mike Trout, Eric Hosmer, and even late great Jose Fernandez all were drafted directly out of high school and put into development teams where they quickly advanced through the organization and made starting debuts shortly after. Over the past ten years the MLB has brought thirteen perennial All-Stars to the league that were drafted straight out of high school, of these thirteen two of them have earned the game’s MVP honor and Mike Trout has earned the MLB’s season MVP twice already. Now I know only thirteen players making the All-Stars out of at least 10 high schoolers every year isn’t exactly an impressive stat but when you look at how big these players were I mean you are talking about players not only recognized around the league but also at players that lead their teams through incredible seasons. Out of these thirteen players all of them have been in the playoffs at some point in their careers and all but five of them have been in their league pennant game and half of them have played for or won a title. These players may be brought into the league very young but unlike other sports that have tried this concept and had it fail baseball is very different. Baseball coaches all have a philosophy about how to play the game, their attack system their defensive sets are all based around how they believe the game should be played, yes both football and basketball have these coaching schemes too they have only a limited number of options baseball seemingly has infinite options on how you run your team. So for a coach to take a young 18 year old kid that shows great promise and pour the coaches philosophy into the kid until it’s oozing out of him every time he is on the field through his discipline and leadership it’s a dream come true for the organization. High school players are a great asset for professional teams to use for many many years.

Dwane Casey ex head coach of the Toronto Raptors was honored with the Coach of the year award last night. So why was he fired this year after he lead his team to the top seed in the Eastern conference let’s look closer. Coach Dwane Casey had been with the team for seven years and still had one more year on his contract with the team before he was abruptly fired and picked up by the Detroit Pistons. During Dwane’s time with the Raptors he led them to five straight playoff appearances where he never ranked below the fourth seed in the East. Although this is an incredible feat for anyone to accomplish Dwane Casey could never get the job done he lost once in the first round getting upset by the sixth seeded Nets 4 games to 3 in 2014, took a first round 4 game sweep by the 5th seeded Wizards back in 2015, suffered a devastating 4-2 defeat at the hands of Lebron James and the soon to be champions in the Conference Finals in 2016, and then finally was swept back to back in 2017 and 2018 by none other than the Cleveland Cavaliers led by Lebron James in the second round both years. So Dwane Casey was never able to get it done although he made five straight trips. I personally believe it is a great accomplishment but it is also true that if you prove that you can’t win the big one then why are you still around. While it was true that Dwane Casey showed great promise as a head coach after forming a perennial playoff team led by two consistent All-Stars in Kyle Lowry and Demar Derozan, but after he accomplished this the next logical thing to do is to win a title. And after two straight years of not only being knocked out of the playoffs but swept by the same team back to back years after they went through a major personnel change and you were the number one seed. I’m sorry you definitely deserve to be fired. Although he had a great year as the head coach of the best team in the East and second best in the league, by record standings, Dwane Casey will now look to make improvements to the Detroit Pistons to see if he can once again be the best coach in the league.

CULTURE Dirty Napkin FOOD REVIEW : Fizz Burgers written by: Samara Murphy

H

amburgers are one of the most iconic foods in the United States. Almost every city in the U.S. has a restaurant that sells hamburgers, so finding a unique restaurant that sells hamburgers would be hard, right? Wrong. Fizz Burgers and a Bottles found a way to sell burgers and stand out from everyone else at the same time.

Fizz Burgers and Bottles is a family-owned restaurant and is local. It was opened in 2010 by Dave, Scott, Stacy and Pat Bergeson. Their biggest competition is Red Robin and Five Guys, but they stand out from them because of their quality of ingredients and because they are most unique. In the last five years they have won four out of the five awards given annually at Wichita Burger Battle.

Fizz Burgers and Bottles is unique because of their burgers, obviously, fries, fry sauces and their variety of bottled sodas. Everything that they sell, except for the sodas, is made fresh. Now, we hear that all the time but this place is serious. They make their own pickles, their own patties, their own sweet potato and regular fries and their own fry sauces. We were also taken to the kitchen and got to see the cucumbers that they would use to make their pickles, we got to see the fries and saw them grind the meat so we know that it is real. The first thing we were given to eat was the fries. They have sweet potato and regular fries, and cook them in 100% peanut oil. We were also able to try their fry sauces, which include: Spicy ketchup, ranch, regular ketchup, Roasted Garlic (house sauce), Garlic Aioli and Smoked Pepper Mayo. My personal favorite was the Garlic Aioli. After we tasted their fries we got to try six of their burgers: the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Spicy Burger, Bacon Burger, Boursin Burger, House Burger and the American Burger. The first thing we noticed was the presentation. Fizz Burgers and Bottles believes that presentation is very important so that the customers can see right away what is on the burger and it makes it look better.

Once we ate our burgers we immediately noticed the difference in the taste. The burgers were not greasy and they were able to blend the flavors of each burger to give them their own uniqueness. Although I am not a mushroom fan, I was very impressed with the Mushroom Swiss Burger because of how they were able to blend all of the flavors to make it taste delicious. The Mushroom Swiss Burger is topped with mushrooms, cooked onions and Swiss cheese. The Spicy Burger is a make-up of the patty, lettuce, red onions and a sauce that is a mixture of mayonnaise and a variety of hot peppers. The Spicy Burger was very flavorful and not too spicy. Their Bacon Burger is the common patty, cheddar cheese, bacon and homemade pickles. Their pickles are very delicious and thick, they taste sweet and sour but not too much of one or the other.

We also tried the House Burger which is a composition of lettuce, their homemade pickles and their Roasted Garlic fry sauce. The American Burger is a common burger with lettuce, pickles, cheese and a patty but it still tasted great. The last burger we tried was the Boursin Burger which is topped with Boursin cheese, garlic and herb flavored cheese which gives the burger all of its flavor.

Not only do they have burgers, they also have bottled sodas and desserts. Fizz Burgers and Bottles has a large variety of uncommon bottled sodas, their customer favorite is the Butterscotch Root-beer. They also use their sodas in some of their desserts, which are: root-beer floats, orange floats and homemade cake truffles. The best thing about Fizz Burgers and Bottles was not the food but the customer service. The waitress and owner were very kind and friendly, they made sure we had everything we needed and we did not have to wait too long for our food at all. Overall this was the best burger restaurant I have ever been to because of their uniqueness and how much effort they put towards making their customers happy, I highly recommend this place and I hope you like it too.
