NMSU, Idaho meet in final game of 2013

A look at key statistics going into today's game

Senior linebacker Trashaun Nixon is the type of player the Aggies would like to recruit in the future: fast and athletic, he can play multiple positions on defense. And he might have a shot at the pro level as well.

Highlighting a number of veteran Aggies from the 2013 season. The group endured a lot, but a win today would be a nice way for them to finish their college football playing careers.

Whichever 1-10 team takes the field hungriest for victory - and commits the fewest mistakes in today's contest will likely end the 2013season with a win.

Stats, depth charts and further analysis can be found for both New Mexico State and Idaho going into today's contest.

Telling number Touchdowns surrendered by 4 NMSU special teams this year — two kickoff returns, a punt return and

a blocked kick. NMSU also fumbled a kickoff return inside its own 5-yard line that led to a touchdown against UTEP, had a blocked PAT returned for two points against San Diego State and gave up a long kickoff return against UCLA. The Aggies can in fact win today, although must eliminate mistakes, starting on special teams.

Storyline The Aggies played consecutive competitive games against superior opponents, Louisiana-Lafayette and Boston College. After losing 48-34 against BC, NMSU actually got a standing ovation from the home crowd — proof that supporters of the program simply want to see progress above all else. Such optimism hit a big road block last weekend in a 55-10 demolition at Florida Atlantic. But it also brings up this point: If the Aggies win today, it would mark improvement, which might be a good enough boost to send people into the offseason.

The matchup • Idaho holds a 14-5 record against the Aggies. Four of NMSU’s five wins have come in Las Cruces. Last year the Vandals topped the Aggies 26-18 in Moscow.

and each hold 1-10 records. Remember those reports prior to the year that NMSU couldn’t survive playing such a docket for more than one or two seasons? Look no further than 2013, where the novelty of facing UCLA and Texas on the road while hosting Minnesota, Boston College, San Diego State and Rice wore off quickly. Both the Vandals and Aggies — which will call the Sun Belt Conference home as footballonly members next year — have clearly been over-scheduled in the present, and the records speak for themselves.

Story line This game could simply come down this: whichever team’s hungriest for a victory will get it. Idaho hasn’t been very competitive this season, as the Vandals are trying to find an identity under firstyear head coach Paul Petrino. In its last time on the field, Idaho lost at Florida State 80-14.

The matchup • Paul Petrino is the son of Western Kentucky head coach — and former Arkansas head man — Bobby Petrino. This is the first head coaching job of Paul Petrino’s career.
