Dream a Little Dream Park Project on Its Way to Completion The Slick Humphrey Recreational Trail, Phase 1 is no longer a dream of many, many Tecumseh citizens, but is fast becoming a reality. What was once just an idea put forth by concerned citizens in August of 2010 at the ―Tecumseh Tomorrow Summit‖ is now under construction. New restrooms have been completed, the west parking lot has been paved to accommodate the many vehicles that are parked there for baseball games and practices, and the half mile recreational trail has already been cut and paved. Next comes packing the sides of the trail and installing retaining walls where necessary. After that lighting will be ordered and installed along with bench seating. Currently, bids are being solicited for restoration of the east pavilion and for a new pavilion on the west side of the park near the baseball fields. Fencing along Hwy #9 will probably be the last item on the list, making sure funds are still available to complete the project. Plans are also underway to apply for a 501 C3 entity for the sole purpose of providing funds for the park and recreational activities for Tecumseh youth and citizens. The hope here is that individuals and businesses will see fit to donate for new playground equipment to be installed at the park, which grant funds did not cover. The search is on however, for grants that might be available for playgrounds and splash parks, but they appear to be few and far between in this economy. We will be having a ―Park Clean Up Saturday‖ as soon as Spring weather is here to stay – so watch your e-mail and the Countywide News for further dates and ways you can be a part of our park project. If you are part of any Tecumseh organization that would like to donate time, give me a call. For more information, call Sharon Stewart at 598-3594 or e-mail at

Journey Through The Past April Luncheon Delves Into Tecumseh’s History Local Author Bob Perry will be the speaker for the April luncheon; discussing his book Brothers of the Cross Timber, which is largely set in Tecumseh. The presentation will include a slide-show of historical photographs from Pottawatomie County and address the unique character that fueled the explosive growth in Oklahoma during the early 1920’s. Perry is the assistant superintendent of business and industry services at Gordon Cooper Technology Center, a position he has held since 1995. He says he writes because he likes to—his first novel, The Broken Statue, has sold several thousand copies since being published in 2006. th

You’re the Top! Member Spotlight:

Benson Park Pecans ―A love of the land and progressive agriculture as well as a knack for seizing opportunities is what drives Jim and Deann Smith, owners of Benson Park Pecans.‖ Began a few years back out of an interest in harvest pecans, today Benson Park Pecans maintains over 100 acres of both native and improved trees. This husband and wife pair seem like the perfect business duo: Jim maintains and cultivates the land and trees to improve varieties, while Deann experiments with how to use the pecan and hopes to one day write a pecan inspired cookbook. So whether you’re looking for some delicious pecans or any covered or candied variation, or just curious about the operation, Benson Park Pecans can be found at 41502 Benson Park Road Shawnee, or can be reached by phone at 405.273.1235.
