"WE ARE BACK!" WE'RE OFFICIALY ENROLLED IN THE COMPETITION!

After spending the last few months repairing and improving our vessel, the hull, the mechanical and the electrical systems are almost ready to be tested.

HULL DESIGN AND COMPOSITES These last few months the hull design and composites area disassembled the boat to rectify some imperfections and change the hull’s color: we went from black to white! These tasks were performed at Trimarine, a shipyard specialized in

composites

application.

We

for

marine

started

by

sanding the hull, followed by the application of primer and top coat.

"Our main goal is to have a brand new hull every two years." Besides these repairs we also needed to build new parts in carbon fiber, namely the cooling system and the pilot’s chair. Currently, the hull team is already thinking about our future. They are focused on the design of the next boat planning the construction from the molds to the hull. This process is crucial since our main goal is to have a brand new

hull

every

two

years.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS These past months the electrical systems area has been developing a new dual motor system and its own control software. This gives us better overall efficiency thus increasing the cruise speed. Another benefit of a dual motor system is a higher peak power, allowing faster accelerations and an increased top speed.

"New dual motor system."

Since the dual motor system requires a higher power than the previous single motor solution, our current battery pack, with a maximum discharge power of 4.5 kW, wasn’t enough to power both motors, since each of these motors has a rated power of 5kW. So, we developed a brand new battery in order to fill this requirement. The technology of this new battery allows it to be lighter, while maintaining the same amount of stored energy, thus reducing the overall weight of the boat.

Last but not least, this year we will have one more photovoltaic panel sponsored by Sun Concept due to changes in the regulation of the competitions. It will be connected in parallel with the already existent photovoltaic panels and installed in the stern above the hatch.

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS One of the biggest developments in the mechanical systems area was our outboard propulsion column. It was all designed by us, and TJ Moldes helped make it happen. It’s optimized so it has minimal drag and weight. The transmission system, present within this column was design in accordance with the dual motor system characteristics.

"The new outboard propulsion column was fully designed by our team." The mechanical systems area was responsible for the development of the hydrofoils and its peripherals. The hydrofoils,

are

used

to

substantially reduce the drag by lifting the whole boat above the waterline, thus allowing it to have an increased cruise speed. This system has an electromechanical control. TJ Moldes also machined our custom propeller. It allows us to obtain the highest possible efficiency when the boat is foiling at its cruise speed. Currently, we are also building a mini trailer which is a mobile wheeled support for our boat capable of being integrated with our road trailer. It represents a huge advantage in the competition due to its structure since it facilitates transportation, repairs and all the general work that we might need to perform on the vessel during tests or the competitions.

MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING Hull Design and Composites This month the team signed up to compete in the first race of the year, in the Netherlands, organized by Solar Sport One, which will take place between the 4th and the 7th of July. The next step will be registering for the Monaco competition, the so-called Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge, in which the team

Electrical Systems

debuted

last year. This will also take place in

July between the 12th and the 14th.

"Two months for the competitions! Mechanical Systems

Since we are a non-profit project, our livelihood is based on the support of companies that provide us with material, financing and know-how for the vessel's construction. Fortunately, this year we had the pleasure of renewing the support of most of our sponsors and even add new ones to help us with the evolution of our project.

Management and Marketing

Moreover, Técnico Solar Boat Team applies for every financing opportunity. For instance, the last one we participated was the TecInnov Contest - Santander Edition which supports innovative ideas promoted by Instituto Superior Técnico. For all our innovative character we were one of the chosen projects. The prize money will be crucial so that we can buy parts and materials that otherwise we couldn’t obtain.
