TechLabs is the exclusive organizing partner for the Global Makeblock MakeX robotics competition in Switzerland and nearby regions. Kids enrolled in this program will train to participate in this competition using the latest in STEM robotics technology. Using Makeblock, kids design, build, program robots, and develop the innovative-thinking, team-collaboration, and problem-solving skills necessary to succeed in the MakeX challenges. Participation in MakeX is not required in order to join the fun and experience the thrill of designing a champion robot! Makeblock supports block-based (scratch) programming for beginners and Python, and c++ for kids ready for additional programming challenges.

Ages 10-16

We’ll be using FlightTest STEM platform to develop STEM and flying skills through a variety of fun, hands-on scratch build aircraft activities. We’ll incorporate Workbench Education projects using Sphero & drones. We’ll be learning about propulsion, aerodynamics, computerized airframe design, and the basics of flight while building our own take-home aircraft. Our drone platforms are for more than just flying: we’ll film our activities using POV cameras, and in our down time, organize drone races.

Skills & Technology Propulsion | Aerodynamics | Computerized airframe design | Basic flying skills

For example: Do we need a blog to get the word out about our project, or collect data? How can we use sensors, light and sounds to create unique devices & experiments? What about 3D printing functional and descriptive components for our projects? ... just a few possibilities we’ll be undertaking while making new friends!

Skills & Technology Physical Computing | Visual Programming | Circuit Building | CodeBugs | GlowBugs | TinkerCAD | Various Electronic Components (LEDs, Motors, Sensors, Actuators)

* Kids with exceptional proficiency and interest are accepted, extra challenges for older kids will be customized.

INTRODUCTION TO ROCKETRY • LAB SKILL LEVEL

Beginner

Intermediate

Advanced

Ages 8-14

When people speak of challenging tasks they often metaphorically refer to rocket science, but what is it really?... And what can we learn about rocket science using fun and engaging projects? This course will explore the forces of physics and engineering that are involved with humans’ most challenging mode of travel: rockets. Drawing on NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) teaching resources, students will build and fly rockets and use tools to test and improve them all the while learning about Newton’s Laws and the forces of physics which affect rockets. Experiments will include aerodynamics, propellants, 3D Parts design, stability, safety and accuracy.

Skills & Technology 3D Computer Aided Design & 3D Printing | Newton’s laws of motion | Forces of flight: weight, thrust, drag and lift | Empirical testing & design optimization | Basic trigonometry
