“My first goal is to not get detention because if I do I will have to write. My second goal is to be good in school always stay focused on me. Try to get most of things right. My third goal is to get my homework in on time so I can stay in band and Softball, since I was in a 10U Softball league I’ve been trying to focus on working hard and playing hard.

- Alyannah, 9 years old “For my sophomore year, first and foremost, I intend to earn a grade point average of 4.0 and refrain from procrastinating in order to manage my time better. Also, this year I would like to focus on improving my basketball skills and hopefully make the JV basketball team at Mira Mesa High School. The two high school sports I plan on trying out for this year are basketball and softball (however my top priority is basketball). An extracurricular activity I want to join as well is Polynesian dancing; if I enjoy it enough than I would like to compete. Socially, I would like to establish my

close friends and keep a close bond with them and keep in contact with my older friends from my middle school. This year is all about making better grades and being successful in the sports that I want to pursue. - Aubreigh, 14 years old “My goals for my senior year is to stay focused and to not let what’s so called “Senioritus get to me. I plan to work hard in my two AP classes and to do the best I can in math. I intend on getting all A’s and B’s and at the same time being able to enjoy my last year at Mira Mesa High. My goals for football are to win Eastern League and eventually make it to the stadium. As well as for track, my goals are to beat my previous personal records and to get as far as I can. - Justice, 17 years old

Q&A with Joe & Shaye ! 8"

Q: How do you find time for your little dates with four kids? S: Easy, we plan in advance. We mark every game, every practice, every school event, every birthday party on a calendar – Joe even sends me Outlook reminders now so I have it on my work calendar too. He depends on his Smart Phone and my loving reminders (hee hee, aka nagging) and I prefer the old school planner that I can write in. Even having coffee somewhere together before heading into work counts as a date.

Q: Have you had any JS Adventures lately? J: Plenty – thanks to Sherm and Eff, we went to San Francisco to visit with Jean and Yak and to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. Shaye surprised me and enrolled us in a graffiti class in the city. We ate a lot of good food and got tons of music at Amoeba Records. In April we caught a few of our favorite island bands at the Wave House in Mission Beach – Katchafire, Ekolu and Rebel Souljahz. In June, we drove to LA for the day and went to the Grammy Museum and STREET restaurant. As you can see, everything we do involves art, music or food.

Q: What is the silliest argument you’ve ever had? J: The silliest argument so far was recently about which Top Ramen flavor is Shaye’s favorite. I thought it was beef and Shaye was shocked that I didn’t know it was chicken! LOL. We were both tired, cranky and HUNGRY – so it’s no surprise that we had an argument over Top Ramen!

Q: What has been one of the most memorable times together? S: Definitely our honeymoon – it was perfect. And when I planned a special Prom for Joe since he never went to his – we went all out with our old school limo, corsage/ boutonnière and prom pose. J: Our Honeymoon together in Oahu‌all the memories are priceless.

Q: What has been the most challenging time in the last 5 years? S: 2008 was the most challenging year for us. I was laid off from my job of 5 years and had a hard time landing a new gig. Later that year, Joe had a ruptured appendix and had to undergo surgery. It was not the best year for us and things were very uncertain. But we survived it and the highlight was Ella’s birth. And we can honestly say that today we are all in a much better place. With the support of from our families and friends, and lots of praying, we got through a very trying time.

Q: What is something you do now that you didn’t do 5 years ago? J: Facebook!
