MEN’S HOOPS - 2003

At halftime of a Big East Conference game with Notre Dame, DePaul honored its legendary head coach and his wife by naming the hardwood at Allstate Arena Ray and Marge Meyer Court. Meyer served the school for 42 years, compiling 724 wins, good for top twenty among all Division I coaches. In the fall of 1999, DePaul also named its new fitness and recreation center for students, faculty, staff and neighborhood residents after Meyer as well. During his time at DePaul, Coach Meyer lead the Blue Demons to the NIT Tournament title in 1944, and two Final Four appearances in 1942-43 and 1978-79.

The nation’s highest-scoring offense eclipsed the 100-point mark with a 102-57 win against Southern Illinois on December 14, 2003. Jenni Dant led six players in double-figures with 23 points while Khara Smith tallied her sixth double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds. With the nine free throws, Dant moved into eighth on DePaul all-time free throws made list with 277 in her career. Jenna Rubino and Charlene Smith each added 12 points. The Blue Demons enjoyed a successful season with a 23-7 record, 10-4 in Conference USA.

Hoopla will feature trivia questions about Blue Demon History for men and women’s basketball. To win you will need to answer both questions correctly. What does being a DePaul Letterwinner mean to you? It makes me proud to know that I had the opportunity to play for one of the most celebrated coaches (Ray Meyer) in college basketball and enjoyed my time here as a blue demon

Why did you choose DePaul? DePaul at the time was one of the most revered programs in college basketball and it was right in my backyard so to speak. I grew up about 25 minutes from here on the southside.

DEC 9- McGrath-Phillips Arena

What was your favorite memory while at DePaul? My favorite memory here is getting to the Sweet 16 my senior year against Duke and of course earning my undergraduate degree, that was a great accomplishment for me and my family. What did receiving a scholarship from DePaul mean to you? It gave me the opportunity to receive a quality education at a Division I institution with a great basketball team. Best of both worlds.

What was your funniest memory at DePaul? My teammates still ride me about my black leather pants that I bought when I was a sophomore. I thought I looked cool in them, maybe not huh? Brief Summary of your life from graduation till now: Played in Europe for 8 yesars, got married to a wonderful wife and have three beautiful children and I am back working as a fundraiser at my alma mater for the last six years.

Is there a recent highlight that you would like to share with Alumni and friends of DePaul Athletics? I just celebrated 21 years of marriage with my high school sweetheart (Angela) and I couldnt have done it without my relationship with God. What advice would you give to a current or future student-athlete? Enjoy college, work hard because it goes by quickly and that includes in the classroom and on the court, network with everybody because you never know when you may need them as a resource in life. Favorites Travel destination: Italy: The food and clothing is unparalleled Books: Rich Dad, Poor Dad (great reading) Movie: The Help (great movie with Viola Davis, Emma Stone) Sports movie: Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington Quote: “To whom much is given, much is required...”

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan

Junior Demons Invade KIDZONE DePaul Men’s Basketball team played this past Saturday, December 10 against Chicago State and the KIDZONE was packed with young Blue Demon fans. Youngsters were able to test their skills on the Boot N’ Shoot, a larger-than-life “pop-a-shot” basketball shoe where contestants have 30 seconds to score as many baskets as possible! Kids also decorated posters to take into the arena with them, as well as applied a Blue Demon temporary tattoo. Junior Demons younger than 12 lined up for the bounce house, complete with slides and secret pathways. All fans had the opportunity to take photos with DIBS, the Blue Demon mascot, and life-size player cutouts. The KIDZONE will be open for every game at the Allstate Arena one hour before tipoff through the end of halftime. Also, fans had the opportunity to attend the post-game autograph session with the Blue Demons, presented by Sharpie®. At Women’s Basketball games, the KIDZONE at McGrath-Phillips Arena features poster making and temporary tattoos for all games. The Boot N’ Shoot is open for all games with the exception of Connecticut (Jan. 21) and Marquette (Feb. 12). Long-time DePaul faithful have enjoyed the 30-foot long timeline banners located in the southeast and northwest concourse areas at Allstate, exhibiting a composite history of Blue Demon Basketball. All of DePaul’s NCAA and NIT Championship Banner appearances are on display in the aisle portals of the north, south and east concourses. Thirty-three of DePaul’s legendary players who went on to play in the NBA are also commemorated throughout the arena.
