01 WELCOME TO SC1500 Welcome to the Level 1 Science for You (SC1500) course offered by Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu.

OVERVIEW OF SC1500 This course is designed to introduce students to the science ideas that explain the world we live in. To do this course, you don’t need to have studied science before, and you can gain NCEA Level 1 credits in a wide range of science topics. All of the topics are internally assessed. To study this course, you will be sent booklets, DVDs and equipment for each topic. If you have access to the Internet, each topic has extra multimedia support through our online teaching and learning environment (OTLE). The course is made up of eight basic (unit standard) topics, and each one is assessed with a test. At the end of each topic, you will have an option of going on to the next topic, or doing a higher level achievement standard worth 4 credits at NCEA Level 1. SC1500 Science for You does not lead directly to the sciences at NCEA Level 2, but can be a stepping stone into the mainstream science topics at NCEA Level 1. Contact your teacher now if you would like to talk about a pathway into the sciences at NCEA Level 2.

COURSE ENDORSEMENT Course endorsement is not available for this course. If you are aiming for course endorsement, talk to your science teacher and learning advisor about the other science courses available at NCEA Level 1.

02 GETTING STARTED HOW SC1500 IS DELIVERED SC1500 is a course with printed material, DVDs and an online component delivered in the online teaching and learning environment (OTLE) for Te Kura. To access OTLE go to our website at www.tekura.school.nz and click on Login on the top right of the homepage. Scroll down to the OTLE heading and click the Login to OTLE link. You may wish to bookmark the OTLE login screen in your browser: Username: <Your Te Kura student ID number> Password: 12345678 You will be asked to change your password when you have logged in.

ORGANISING YOUR STUDY Plan a regular time to study. Some people learn best from frequent short sessions while others do better with fewer, longer sessions. It is important to have a plan or a timetable and to keep to it. There is a suggested course plan in the back of this guide to help you plan your programme of study. You should complete the blank course planner to help you plan your learning goals and assessment for each week. You may wish to talk to your science teacher to help you decide on your plan. Getting your study underway is very important. Your first return of work should be two to three weeks after you received your initial work. If you have any issues returning your work within this time, please contact your subject teacher. For more information on how to study successfully, refer to the Student guide to Years 11–13’ (www.tekura.school.nz).

CHOOSING TOPICS AND STANDARDS For a full year of study, you should aim to complete at least 8 of the standards from the Science for You course. Each time you complete a standard, you can choose to EITHER go on to the next unit standard in the series, or extend your knowledge and understanding, by doing work towards an achievement standard. For example, when you complete the first booklet, SC1501 Living Things, you will complete the unit standard assessment, and choose between doing the next topic, SC1502 Earth Science, or studying more about living things with the SC1100 Life Processes topic. When choosing topics, it is important to remember: >>

Your interests and career goals – for example if you are interested in a career working with animals or in health science, you might choose to do the Life Processes achievement standard to extend your knowledge.

>>

Your study goals – whether your goal is to complete the Science for You course, to achieve science credits at Level 1, or to prepare for study at Level 2 and beyond.

Talk to your science teacher if you have any questions about which topics you should choose.

SELF-ASSESSMENT Many activities are self-marked. You’ll find an Answer guide in each booklet. Use these answers to mark your own work and make corrections where necessary. Self-marking is important as it gives you instant feedback on how well you understand the ideas, concepts or information that have been covered.

ASSESSMENT Students are required to send in their self-marked and teacher-assessed work. Teachers return student work with feedback. Internal assessments/assessment for this course are/is: >>

closed book tests (for example SC1501T1)

>>

a practical investigation

>>

presenting a scientific report (in writing or talking).

The detailed criteria for unit and achievement standards will be given in the relevant resources. They can also be found by searching the subject and level in the NCEA part of the NZQA website (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and then finding the relevant standard(s).

GETTING STARTED

TIME COMMITMENT There are eight topics in the basic course. Allow 10 hours of work to complete each topic: about two weeks of work at five hours per week. Before deciding on the pace of learning, read through this Course and assessment guide and ask yourself the following: >>

How much time can I set aside for study each week?

>>

Will I be able to keep a steady pace of five hours of study each week?

>>

Which standards or credits do I need for next year’s study or work?

NORMAL PACE OF LEARNING As a guide, expect to do at least five hours work per week in this subject. This means completing three to four topics each term so that you gain 20 credits in one school year.

FLEXIBLE PACE OF LEARNING If you have less than a year because you start later or need to finish earlier, you can decide the pace at which you work. You could still complete the whole course by devoting more time and effort to it. Your teacher can ensure that you receive the resources you need in time to do this.

COVER SHEETS The back cover of the booklet becomes the cover sheet for your work. Fill it in, sign it and attach it to the front of your work before sending back to Te Kura. If applicable, your supervisor also signs the cover sheet as part of our authenticity requirements.

TE KURA CODES Your course code is: SC1500. SC is the code for Science and the 1 in 1500 refers to Level 1. The basic booklets have codes like SC1501 and SC1502. The 5 in SC1501 tells you that it a basic level topic, at curriculum level 5. Topics for all the achievement standards such as SC1101 are at the normal NCEA level: curriculum level 6. ‘US’ is the code for Unit Standard and ‘AS’ is the code for Achievement Standard.

QUERIES ABOUT YOUR WORK It is important to contact your teacher if you have any queries about your work. It helps to have your ID number, topic code (for example SC1501) and the activity or question number when you contact your teacher, but it is not essential.

06 ASSESSMENT INFORMATION STANDARDS SC1500 offers credits from both unit standards and achievement standards which count towards NCEA Level 1. Please refer to our Student guide to National Certificates or Te Kura and New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) websites for more information about National Certificates of Educational Achievement and assessment: >>

www.nzqa.govt.nz

>>

www.tekura.school.nz

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT SC1500 offers up to eight Unit Standards and four Achievement Standards that are internally assessed. This means that your teacher sets and marks all assessments that count towards credits gained for these standards. The assessment opportunity for a Unit Standard is coded ‘T1’ and if there is a second assessment opportunity, it is coded ‘T2’ e.g. SC1501T1 is the first assessment opportunity and SC1501T2 is the second assessment opportunity. The assessment opportunity for an Achievement Standard is coded ‘Y1’ and if there is a second assessment opportunity offered, this is coded ‘Y2’. For example, SC1042Y1 is the first assessment for AS90943 and SC1042Y2 is the 2nd assessment opportunity.

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT There is no external assessment for this course. All standards are assessed internally by your teacher.

RESUBMISSIONS FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS If you have made mistakes in your standard assessment activity, your teacher may offer you one resubmission opportunity. This means you have made errors that you are capable of discovering and correcting by yourself. A resubmission allows you to correct your errors and improve your result.

FURTHER ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS For some standards, you may be able to complete a second assessment called a ‘further assessment opportunity’ to improve your results. These standards are indicated in the assessment summary. You should take this opportunity where it is available.

AUTHENTICITY Authenticity means that students complete and submit work that is their own. When you submit work to Te Kura, you sign an authentication declaration that the work you are submitting is your own work and was done under the required assessment conditions. Where applicable, your supervisor signs to confirm this declaration.
