Work on placing 40-metre bridge beams in place is now underway WORK on the €60m twin flyover project on the South Ring Road is about to enter its final phase as the massive 40-metre bridge beams are lowered into place this week. As this aerial picture shows the placement of the 100-tonne beams over the Sarsfield Road Roundabout will be one of the final elements of the project. By ALAN HEALY flyovers could cut up to 30 minutes off journey times at peak rush-hour periods. Ireland’s largest mobile crane has been brought to Cork to carry out the lifting work this week. All 18 beams are expected to be installed by tomorrow. Once they are in place both flyovers will be substantially complete and the remaining months will spent completing surfacing works, sound barriers, lighting and other minor works. ● See page five for more.
