CHRISTMAS GOODIES DONATED FOR MATERNITY UNIT PATIENTS THE SEASON OF GIVING InterHealth Canada – Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital wishes to express gratitude for a double donation made to patients on the maternity unit and their little ones during the holiday season. Sharika Been, a sophomore studying biology overseas at Spellman College in Atlanta, donated to the maternity unit for the second year.

The donation comprised of infant-care items to benefit mothers and expectant mothers in need. Sharika, a young Turks and Caicos Islander, expressed that she is inspired by her late father Robert Been Snr who is said to have been a very charitable person.

Members of the Women’s Ministry at Bethany Baptist Church on Providenciales also conducted a giveaway to mothers and expectant mothers at Cheshire Hall Medical Centre during the holiday season. The group donated a batch of comfy ocean blue blankets that contained an interweaved spiritual and inspirational message, ‘God Loves Me".

The total value of the cash giveaways equated to $3,200. The remaining balance of $800 will be used along with an additional $1,000 donation from another benevolent donor to purchase care packages for non-acute care inpatients.

InterHealth Canada – TCI Hospital expressed gratitude to JAIS Jewelers for the partnership and generous initiative. The cash recipients were elated and expressed appreciation for the kindhearted gesture.

The initiative will be entitled Operation Gratitude Part II and is scheduled for early 2020.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world INTERHEALTH CANADA REPRESENTATIVES DISCUSS BREAST CANCER AND QUALITY ON 'HEALTH MATTERS' RADIO SHOW Isha Honore, Quality Risk and Patient Safety Manager at IHC - TCI Hospital (Top Right) conducted an interview on Friday, November 1st 2019 with Radio Turks and Caicos Show Host, Audley Malcolm. The discussion explored the significance of the quality management profession in health care.

Various quality improvement initiatives in operation at the health care facility were underscored. These included the Diamond Challenge, Accreditation, specific departmental initiatives and leadership rounds.

During the discussion, it was also important to outline how quality is measured to determine the effectiveness of interventions. Mechanisms such as client feedback surveys, audits related to hand hygiene, falls prevention and pressure ulcer etc..., key performance indicators and information-sharing tools such as a ‘Where We Are Report’ were cited.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) 2019 Quiz Winners Revealed with a tie The VTE quiz seeks to raise awareness of the medical condition, clinical guidelines and assessment tools currently utilized at the TCI Hospital.

Congratulations to the winners of the Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) 2019 Quiz. Only one person across both Cheshire Hall Medical Centre (CHMC) and Cockburn Town Medical Centre (CTMC) recorded a score of 100%.

The VTE quiz ended on Friday November 8th 2019 with a total of 82 responses. The average overall score was 70.29%. All TCI hospital employees were eligible to participate in the initiative, with the exception of VTE steering committee members. Each staff member was allowed one chance to complete the VTE awareness quiz.

Hospital Information System Manager, Detorrie Tennant (Image 1) received first place with 100% followed by the Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Carriere (Image 2) with 88% in second place, both based at CHMC. Third place was secured by Shondell Murray of Inpatient Services (Image 4) and Christina Skippings (Image 3) based, both based at CTMC with a tie of 84%.

Staff is permitted to refer to the VTE policy and clinical guidelines located on the hospital’s intranet in the clinical policies section and also review the VTE assessment tools used within the organization. An information booth was also held to raise VTE awareness.

The Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Quiz is one of the initiatives launched during VTE awareness month every October. World Thrombosis Day is also observed during this period.

CANCER AWARENESS General Practitioners, Dr Dionne Lightbourne and Dr Henry Blythe within the Family Medicine Department, gave a presentation on Saturday, October 26th, 2019 at the National Cancer Society annual luncheon held at Beaches Resort.

Dr Blythe provided an overview of Prostate Cancer and encouraged the room of predominantly women, to persuade their male associates, relatives and significant others to seek prostate screening.

Dr Lightbourne delivered an expansive but simplified presentation on Breast Cancer, which included the formation of cancer, risk factors, screening, treatment and healthy lifestyles. Her speech was supported by a collage of educational videos to creatively connect with the audience. Other members of the hospital team were elated to support the cause. It was yet another spectacular event.

BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES InterHealth Canada - TCI Hospital provided complimentary health screenings to members of the general public during the National Health Insurance Board's 10th Anniversary community event held in Grand Turk and Providenciales on Friday 25th October 2019 and Saturday, November 2nd 2019, respectively.

Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age.

Overweight and obesity, as well as their related diseases, are largely preventable. Healthy school lunches can help reduce the instance of school-age obesity. Showing kids healthy alternatives can encourage better choices in their out-of-school food selections. Find simple, tasty, healthier options for your little one.

United Way - Turks and Caicos hosted an annual reading initiative on Tuesday December 3, 2019 at the Downtown Ballpark in Providenciales. The event was entitled ‘Desserts with Dr Seuss and The Grinch – Yes I Can Read.’

Team members from InterHealth Canada were among a group of corporate companies that volunteered to read to hundreds of students to encourage literacy development.

The enthusiasm and eagerness exuded by volunteers were valuable to spark a passion for reading within children at an early age. Students were also given sweet treats for their participation.

InterHealth Canada - Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital bid farewell to then Visiting Consultant Cardiologist, Himanshu Shukla who was instrumental in the commencement of Cardiology services at the health care facility in early 2019.

Visiting Cardiologist Dr Shukla Bids Farewell

Dr Shukla was the first physician to operate under the then new local program, which was previously only available under the National Health Insurance Treatment Abroad Program. A farewell session was arranged during his last clinic cycle on November 23, 2019.

Dr. Shukla participated in the press conference held to launch the service on Friday 8th March 2019 and had visited the island on a quarterly basis to deliver adult cardiology non-invasive programs; specifically, echocardiography rhythm monitoring and consultations at a tertiary care level thereafter.

He was actively recognized for his philanthropic heart.

Among the many generous items provided by Dr. Shukula was a Medtronic Lifepak automated external defibrillator or AED, which was donated to the TCI Government Department of Sports on Thursday, August 22, 2019 in partnership with InterHealth Canada. The management team expressed gratitude for his contribution to medical care and the community.

HOSPITAL FOR PATIENTS AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL The new Żywiec Poviat Hospital is a unique project, not only because of the great expectations and needs of the Poviat residents. This will be one of the few poviat hospitals in Poland constructed from scratch.

Thanks to this, it will become a modern, state-of-the-art healthcare facility meeting global standards, both from technological and functional perspective, as well as providing for patients needs and a better environment for medical personnel.

The new hospital will be located in just one building, with a functional layout of all rooms optimizing the work of medical staff.

Besides the possibility to perform the majority of medical tests and health checks under one roof and, if feasible from a medical point of view, even during a single visit (one-stop-shop), the new improvements will also include enhanced healthcare IT systems as well as new high quality nurse and doctor call system.

Based on its international experience in creating modern health care facilities, InterHealth Canada has implemented a number of solutions that will raise the healthcare and working standards in the new hospital. The Żywiec hospital has been designed by architects from N+parametric design studio, who are authors of a number of hospitals in London, New Orleans, New York, Taiwan and Kuwait. When designing the hospital in Żywiec, the studio, together with ARUP engineers from Kraków, came up with a design of a functional block, including state-of-the-art solutions required by modern medical rescue. When planning the layout of the hospital, the investor together with designers aimed to minimize the number of kilometres that the medical personnel and medical staff

Taking into account the high expectations associated with the new facility constructed using modern modelling system, a so-called therapeutic environment has been created to provide patients and staff with optimal, friendly conditions for treatment and recovery. One such example is exposure to daylight - hence the unusual large size of the windows, rarely met in Polish hospitals. Bright hospital rooms combined with unique views will help create favorable conditions for patients to recover and improve the working environment for medical personnel.

CONSTRUCTION SITE UPDATE The hospital construction works are gradually coming to an end. The general investor – Wodpol from Żywiec is currently carrying out finishing works. On the first and the second floor, work has been carried out to equip patients’ rooms, walls are painted, floors are laid, bed and medical head panels are being installed. Finishing works are also conducted in patients’ bathrooms with the laying of tiles and installation of sanitary fittings. Next, medical equipment and furniture will be installed, kitchen will be furnished and atrium - the main hall of the hospital – will be completed.

The outer façade of the hospital is in the last phase of completion, the parking lots and internal roads on hospital premises are coming to a finish and work on the helipad have commenced.

One of the biggest challenges is the introduction of optimal solutions for the emergency department and imaging diagnostics, which are crucial from the point of view of saving lives.

The structural cabling of the hospital has been completed - currently the preparations for connecting the hospital to the network and the launch of IT systems are underway.

One of the key stages will be transfer of the entire software from the current hospital to the new facility.

I CAN’T WAIT TO MOVE INTO THE NEW HOSPITAL! The new hospital brings high-quality health care, modern equipment, patient-friendly environment but also new working standards and development opportunities for the medical personnel – says Antoni Juraszek, Żywiec Hospital Director.

The construction works at the new hospital are slowly coming to an end. Soon, the entire medical personnel of the Żywiec Poviat Hospital will be ready to move into a modern healthcare facility. What will this change bring for the personnel?

Additionally, thanks to the modern equipment and international quality of the service we will finally be able to apply for ISO certificates and medical accreditations which hasn’t been possible until now due to current hospital standards. It is also a big opportunity for our medical personnel – working with modern equipment, international know-how from IHC which will provide training to our personnel – all this will make our hospital an attractive employer.

Antoni Juraszek: Moving to a new building means a completely new quality of work for the entire medical personnel. You simply cannot compare working conditions between the old and the new hospital – the difference is just so huge. The current working conditions in the old facilities are below any standards, with communication flow being our greatest handicap. Being located in several buildings, on different floors, the medical personnel is constantly on their feet moving to and fro, which requires a lot of physical effort. The new hospital has been designed in a way to minimize foot traffic and enhance communication, and additionally the everyday communication between teams.

You’re one of the initiators, for years promoting the concept of building a new hospital in Żywiec under a PPP contract. Today, when the project is coming to the end, it can be said that it was a long and hard journey but worth it, wouldn’t you say so?

AJ: We have been long waiting for this moment. Throughout the entire process from concept to realization, we knew we must do everything to make this project come true. Our patients and personnel deserve the very best conditions. If today, we are capable of providing medical services despite working in very difficult conditions, it can only be better at the new hospital. I would like to take this opportunity to thank to all medical personnel who have fully devoted themselves to patient care despite hard conditions. Ours is not an ordinary job, you can’t do it only partially - it’s a service to the individual requiring special calling, despite conditions and circumstances. In the new hospital, we will be able to provide high quality service to our patients while at the same time working in a comfortable and friendly environment. I can’t wait for us to move to the new hospital and I truly believe that the medical personnel will be happy about the change as well.

Another important issue is the comfort of our patients – a building without a lift, one bathroom per entire ward and poor social conditions are the everyday reality of our patients. The new hospital will offer very cosy conditions to the patients – cosy, bright rooms with toilets, modern beds equipped with medical head panels and nursing call system, something that was out of our reach to date. These will be the everyday standards of our new hospital.

What will the new hospital be like, what possibilities this change gives?

AJ: Most of all I would like to stress that this is like opening of a new chapter for the Żywiec Poviat Hospital as InterHealth Canada will receive service contract cession from NFZ and will not be burdened with the current debt of the old hospital. One can say that this is like a new beginning, without any overdue 21
