Grant improves lighting for St Lucie Facilities Thanks to a $250,000 grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners will improved energy efficiency and reduced utility costs at two parks and at the St. Lucie County Regional History Center. The state grant allows St. Lucie County’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department to replace the athletic field lighting at Ilous Ellis Park’s Pop Warner Football Field, located at 1211 Avenue M, and the Horatio Grisby’s Little League Baseball Fields, located at 1306 Avenue M. These new energy-efficient lighting projects will reduce utility costs, expand the life of the lighting system and allow staff to control the lights over telephone lines or the internet. Between the two parks, the County is projecting $12,800 annually in energy and maintenance cost savings or a

of $320,021 over the 25-year lifespan of the light fixtures. St. Lucie County is also utilizing the grant funds to replace the indoor lighting at the Regional History Center, located at 414 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island. Operated jointly by the county and the St. Lucie Historical Society, the museum is expected to experience a reduction in monthly lighting usage from 50 watts down to 5 watts with the annual lighting expenses decreasing from $720.72 to $72.07. The History Center’s new LED lighting system is expected to generate a lifetime savings (32 years) of $27,912 for 9,336-squarefoot facility. Exchange Club of Sebastian Fills Local Food Pantry Shelves The Exchange Club of Sebastian is dedicated to Community Service. A favorite project is filling the shelves of the Roseland Ecumenical Food Pantry, which happened on August 12, just in time to aid backto-school children and their families. $1,000 worth of food and paper products were donated as a way of showing the Club’s gratitude for the wonderful contribution the Food Pantry makes in our community. The Sebastian Exchange Club, thanks to the efforts

of members, friends, community sponsors, and fishermen, raises funds each year through the Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Fishing Tournament, which was held this year on June 8th. All proceeds from the tournament are directed back into the community, through the Club’s dedication to Community Service, Patriotism, Youth Activities, and the Prevention of Child Abuse. These are the Pillars on which the National Exchange Club and local

Exchange clubs are founded. The Exchange Club of Sebastian meets every Wednesday (except the first Wednesday) of each month at noon at Capt’n Hiram’s on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. The club welcomes residents with like-minded goals of making a positive difference in the community to join them for lunch. For more information regarding Sebastian Exchange, get in touch with Michael Natale, President, at 772-388-0044 or email stickitman@aol.com.

Vero Beach Moving Company Commits To Feed the Hungry White Glove Moving, Storage and Delivery of Vero Beach has joined the nationwide network of relocation companies dedicated to ending hunger in the communities they serve. White Glove Moving has joined forces with Move For Hunger, a non-profit that works with relocation companies to get unwanted food from families who are moving to those who need it. The crew of White Glove Moving will now be collecting any food items their clients won’t be taking with them, and delivering the donations directly to Treasure Coast Food Bank. Treasure Coast Food Bank, together with more than 200 partner agencies, distributes millions of pounds of food annually throughout Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties.

“We’ve always encouraged those leaving our area to donate their unused non-perishable food, and many individuals do so through our annual Farewell Food Drives. We welcome the efforts of White Glove Moving to help secure more food for those in need on the Treasure Coast,” Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judith Cruz said. “As a company, we feel blessed to have the work and referrals of fellow Treasure Coast residents and businesses,” said Phil DeLange, President of White Glove Moving. “We are thrilled that by helping people and families move, we can also help end hunger and make a difference in the lives of those who need it during difficult times.” More than 18 percent of Florida’s population lives at risk of hunger. Every day more than 3 million people

struggle to find their next meal, including 1.1 million children. It has never been more important for the more fortunate members of the community to lend a hand to those in need, said Gavin Christiansen, director of operations at Move For Hunger. “We are thrilled to have White Glove Moving join us in the fight to end hunger,” Christiansen said. “With such devastating hunger statistics at both the local and national level, their efforts will provide crucial support to Treasure Coast Food Bank’s mission to feed the hungry.” For more information on Treasure Coast Food Bank, call 772-489-3034, log on to www.stophunger.org, visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/tcfoodbank, or follow us on Twitter at twitter. com/tcfoodbank.

Over 10,000 Descend on Food Truck Frenzy Vero Beach

Riverside Park became the mecca of foodies this past Saturday when more than 10,000 people came out to enjoy the first Food Truck Frenzy Vero Beach sponsored by The Buggy Bunch.

Thousands came together in one large picnic at Food Truck Frenzy Vero Beach at Riverside Park.

Organizer already confirming vendors and food trucks for the next Food Truck Frenzy Vero Beach event scheduled for Sept. 14 and by all indications this first outing has shown this trendy food event has firmly established itself on the Treasure Coast. The event’s crowds — attracted by Facebook publicity — lined up across the park’s bridge, and once they arrived, some people stood in quarter-mile long lines for up to 45 minutes, in 85-degree evening heat, to get a taste of the fare from vendors like The Empanada Truck or Snowballs-Cajun Style.

People brought chairs and blankets transforming Riverside Park into one huge picnic area as thousands enjoyed the shade, watched children play in the bounce house area and others caught up with friends they had not seen in ages. All in all, Vero Beach showed that major events can occur out of season and records were definitely broken on this hot August evening. The Food Truck Frenzy was organized by The Buggy Bunch — a nonprofit, faithbased moms group that has daily events for its members and their kids — to raise money for their organization and the VBHS cheerleaders. Shoo The Flu To Start

Vero Beach’s own Gold Rush Kettle Korn braved the heat throughout the afternoon and evening hours serving hundreds of bags of kettle korn to the masses lined up at their booth.

Local favorite Snowball - Cajun Style proved why their icy treats and cajun cuisine has made them a name across the Treasure Coast at outdoor events.

Flu season is fast approaching, and the Visiting Nurse Association of the Treasure (VNA) is preparing for its 21st season of the “Shoo the Flu” vaccination program. The VNA’s priority is to keep our community healthy, and the organization encourages all area residents to get their flu shot early in the season.

The VNA will offer four types of flu vaccinations: a high-dose vaccine for individuals ages sixty-five and older, a preservative-free vaccine for individuals ten to sixty-four years old, the regular influenza vaccine for individuals ten and older, and a new intradermal vaccine, which has a micro-needle designed to be injected into the skin and not the muscle. The intradermal vaccine is for individuals aged eighteen to sixty-four years. All VNA flu vaccines are manufactured in the United States.

The high-dose vaccine is $45, the intradermal is $35, and the regular and preservative-free influenza vaccines are $25. There is no out-of-pocket expense for individuals with the following insurances: Medicare Part B, AARP Medicare Complete, Advantra Freedom Medicare, Aetna Medicare, Health First Health Plans (regular and preservative-free dose only), Humana Medicare, Railroad Medicare, Secure Horizons, Tricare, United Healthcare Medicare, and Universal Healthcare. For those covered by other insurances, we will be glad to provide a receipt which can be filed with their insurance provider for possible reimbursement. The VNA will begin holding “Shoo the Flu” vaccination clinics on September 4th. Visit www.vnatc.com/flu to find a VNA clinic near you or call the VNA flu hotline at 772.978.5502
