Rabbi’s Voice Rabbi Stephen H. Pinsky Dear Friends: There was a time when I was very critical of those who came to Temple only for yahrzeit – the anniversary of the death of members of their families. Now as I notice the yahrzeit list growing longer, fewer and fewer people bother to be present on that Sabbath even when the names of their loved ones are read. I am frankly embarrassed for them. The Temple may be filled with worshippers, but those who should be present on that one occasion during the year as a simple act of memory and respect are frequently missing. I have often heard people say that it is not necessary to say Kaddish in order to remember their dear ones. That is, of course, quite true. But we are busy people and the world has a way of swallowing us up with the pressures and demands of our lives. That is why our faith established the practice of saying Kaddish on the yahrzeit of the dead. It is a symbolic reminder that we are more than the measure of our daily successes and failures. We are also the extension of our parents – our sisters and brothers – our husbands and wives – our children. Their unfinished lives have now become ours to fulfill. Their gifts of love to us become all the more precious when we acknowledge the unbroken ties which yet bind our hearts to theirs. The saying of Kaddish is a declaration of the continuity of the generations. It is an act of faith which endows our beloved with a measure of immortality. What are we teaching our children through our neglect? Are we saying that the memory of our parents is not worthy of an hour or so of worship in the synagogue? Would it not be far better to teach our children that a yahrzeit is a time to recall as a family the love and the strength we shared with someone precious, even if the death occurred many years ago? Surely we wish them to draw strength from our lives even when we are gone. Our observance of yahrzeit enables us to instruct our children that we always want to be a part of their lives, too. I recall when my mother died many years ago, my then nine year old daughter wanted to know if she could come to the Temple to “stand up for Grandma.” Maybe that’s what saying Kaddish means – to “stand up” for loved ones and thereby know that they and we and those who yet share our lives shall always belong to each other. Yours sincerely, Stephen H. Pinsky

May the door of this synagogue be wide enough to receive all who hunger for love, all who are lonely for friendship. May it welcome all who have cares to unburden, thanks to express, hopes to nurture. May the door of this synagogue be narrow enough to shut out pettiness and pride, envy and enmity. May its threshold be no stumbling block to young or straying feet. May it be too high to admit complacency, selfishness and harshness. May this synagogue be, for all who enter, the doorway to a richer and more meaningful life. (Mishkan T'filah)

Cantor’s Voice

Cantor Carrie Barry As another High Holy Day season looms on the horizon, I have been reflecting on the summer as it zooms by me. Aside from the hours spent in the pool with my little guys, the summer brought spiritual fulfillment as well. It was a special summer of worship at Temple Beth Torah. During the month of July we learned lots of new melodies for our traditional prayers as well as some other inspiring pieces by our movement’s extraordinary songwriters. We welcomed Shabbat with meditation and, going with the flow and working around the painting of the sanctuary, we even had the opportunity one weekend to greet the Sabbath Bride as we watched the setting sun though the wall of windows in our lobby. We explored different parts of our siddur, Mishkan Tefilah, and engaged in some Torah study as well. It is always a little bittersweet for me, as I’m sure it is for all of you, to get back into the swing of the school year. It is my goal this fall to incorporate some of the essence of our summer worship into our regular worship practice. Whether you were able to join us during July or not, I know that you will enjoy the new and meaningful music and I hope that you will be open to exploring with me new ways to reach the divinity around us and in each one of us. B’Shalom, Cantor Carrie Barry
