CHILDREN ON THE EDGE

THE BODY SHOP AT HOME & TM

CHILDREN ON THE EDGE CHANGING LIVES TOGETHER FOR OVER 25 YEARS

The Body Shop is fuelled by the belief that business can be a force for good. Supporting Children on the Edge is one way we bring this to life, helping forgotten children around the world who are living on the edges of society.

Children on the Edge was sparked into life by Dame Anita Roddick over 29 years ago. Not long after this The Body Shop At Home™ began to support them, a partnership that has lasted for over 25 years, raised more than £1.3million and changed thousands of lives.

Today we’re helping children and families living in slums in Uganda. One way we help bring hope is by giving micro-loans to single mothers so that they can start their own small business; which means they can pay for food and education for their children.

You can help by adding a £1 donation to Children on the Edge onto your order, or by buying our Hemp Hard-Working Hand Protector 30 ml. We donate £1 to Children on the Edge for every one sold. £1 can fund four days of education for a child living in the slums of Uganda.

In the last few years, the focus of our support has been on the work of Children on the Edge in Uganda. In the slum communities surrounding Jinja, children live in appalling conditions and are at risk of abuse, neglect and even child sacrifice. Through Child Protection Teams (CPT), local people are empowered to transform these communities for their children, creating a protective environment and ensuring hope for the future. One of these people is grandmother of two, Masitula. She has lived in Masese I for over 20 years, supporting her two children and three grandchildren. She was struggling to afford school fees for the children and couldn’t provide more than one meal a day. After receiving a loan from Children on the Edge Africa and support from a local savings and business group, she started a fish cooking business. As it grew more successful she has been able to pay for school fees and at least two good meals a day for her family.

The main difficulty she has now is that, when conditions aren’t right, the village fishermen don’t go out on the lake and there are then no fish to sell. To create a more stable income, she is putting aside a little money every week to save for a small wooden kiosk where she can sell basic food items. Bit by bit, thanks to the support of customers like you, resourceful people like Masitula can create a protective and stable environment for their children. Masitula’s fish business has created enough income for her to send her grandchildren to school
