Highlights of 2010

Summer 2010 2010 We The People Bookshelf Grant Awards - Each of our nine libraries received seventeen classic hardcover books and programming materials that focused on the theme of A More Perfect Union. The grant was awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Brownstone Book Fund Foundation Donation - The Brownstone Book Fund donated 100 new children’s books to our libraries to promote early reading. The picture books included both classics as well as attractive new favorites. Fall 2010 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grants (Dickenson County Libraries) - The Dickenson County Board of Supervisors garnered two American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants for the benefit of the libraries in Clintwood and Haysi. $126,710 was awarded for new furnishings and equipment. Library of Virginia Fall Trustee Workshop - Wise County Public Library hosted the Library of Virginia’s Annual Trustee Workshop for the libraries located in the western area of Virginia. C. Bascom Slemp Foundation Grant (Lee County Public Library) - The exterior of the library in Pennington Gap received a major uplift when the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation provided $10,754 in grant funding to refurbish the landscaping. Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation Grant - For the second consecutive year, the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation donated $500 to our libraries to purchase books that provide information about breast cancer. These back-to-back grant awards have insured that our libraries have new and comprehensive collections on the subject.

2010‐2011 was an exceptional year. With circulation of materials rising nearly 4%, it is clear that our libraries are destinations of choice for the children, adults and families in our communities. The support of our library users, donors, Friends groups, Library Trustees, County and Town governments and the State of Virginia has been critical to our success this year.

20

Highlights of 2011 Winter 2011 Teddie’s Treasures Program (C. Bascom Slemp Memorial Library) - The Big Stone Gap library received a $10,000 donation in memory of Teddie Reasor Arnold to fund a series of special children’s programs named Teddie’s Treasures. Lonesome Pine eLibrary - A digital library collection of bestselling and classic ebooks, audiobooks, music and video was launched on January 3 from our new eLibrary website. Spring 2011 LS2 Kids Public Access Catalog - A new children’s electronic catalog, geared to our youngest library users, was added. It features an interactive animated flow of book jackets for a visual display of children’s books that are available at our libraries. Scout, a curious young puppy, greets and guides children with a simple, intuitive, and playful approach to finding books at the library. Summer 2011 Wireless Internet for the Public - J. Fred Matthews Library in St. Paul becomes our first library to offer wireless Internet access to the public.

Our libraries added 56 new computers this year; 38 of them are from grants.
