As a dancer you don’t get to do that many big magazine photo shoots, but probably the biggest one I ever did was when I was just 20 years old, for British Vogue in 1989, with the extraordinary photographer Arthur Elgort. Although his reputation was for beautiful and innovative fashion photography, he also had a great interest in ballet. I was very excited to be invited to work with him on this shoot in New York. Below:Photographed in New York for Vogue, I am with Sophie, daughter of the famed photographer Arthur Elgort. She was watching from the sidelines and couldn’t help but join in. Absolutely adorable in my gold pointe shoes.

On the day, it was so exciting to be standing behind Sir Paul McCartney in the queue and such an honour to be given my DBE from Her Majesty the Queen herself. When I was being photographed by the press afterwards I dropped my beautiful medal and was very worried that I would be photographed picking it up from the gravelâ€Ś but I was rescued by the delightful Yeomen of the guard!
