Vogue 1989

As a dancer you don’t get to do that many big magazine photo shoots, but probably the biggest one I ever did was when I was just 20 years old, for British Vogue in 1989, with the extraordinary photographer Arthur Elgort. Although his reputation was for beautiful and innovative fashion photography, he also had a great interest in ballet. I was very excited to be invited to work with him on this shoot in New York. Below:Photographed in New York for Vogue, I am with Sophie, daughter of the famed photographer Arthur Elgort. She was watching from the sidelines and couldn’t help but join in. Absolutely adorable in my gold pointe shoes.

Photos by Arthur Elgort

xquisitely produced, the book is filled with remarkable images of Dame Darcey in various notable locations, such as a pod of the London Eye, on top of the Victoria and Albert memorial, and performing at worldwide events, like the Olympics opening ceremony. The collection includes rare and unseen moments of Darcey shot by some of the most famous photographers, including Lord Snowdon, Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz, in locations beyond the stage – including rehearsals, fashion shoots and more – which are accompanied by behind-the-scenes stories and personal anecdotes. A fitting testament to one of our true national treasures, this glorious and charming book is a wonder to enjoy for years to come. | 15

Vogue 1989

Opposite page:To achieve such physical ballet moves I did a ballet class in NYC each morning before we started the shoot. On the left-hand photo you can see the large curved canvas behind me. I had to be very careful to not put my foot through it as I repeated the grand sissonne jump over and over so that Arthur could capture it at full height. Photos by Arthur Elgort

Cheek to cheek - Take 50 2011

This dance had to be rehearsed over and over again for the cameras, until we were satisfied that we had captured the true feel of the era. Photo by Ross MacGibbon | 17

Becoming a dame 2018

On the day, it was so exciting to be standing behind Sir Paul McCartney in the queue and such an honour to be given my DBE from Her Majesty the Queen herself. When I was being photographed by the press afterwards I dropped my beautiful medal and was very worried that I would be photographed picking it up from the gravel‌ but I was rescued by the delightful Yeomen of the guard! A Warm Welcome We take a look at Neptune, an interiors brand, renowned for creating kitchens, furniture and accessories that combine expert craftsmanship and thoughtful design. After a long-stretching summer and continuous balmy evenings, the thought of wrapping up, putting the log burner on and having heartier suppers feels especially appealing. Winter is the season for enjoying that hunker-down quality of our homes, but with enough warmth to still saviour time in the great outdoors. These thoughts are what led Neptune to their new collection’s inspiration. We hope this editorial inspires you with interior ideas for your own home and with thoughts on new things to try. | 33
