Welcome to Costa Rica and to Manuel Antonio / Quepos By Don Willems

W

hether you choose your vacation for adventure or tranquility, this area of Costa Rica truly offers the best of both. In addition, Manuel Antonio has a history of being known as one of the most gay-friendly places to visit in Central America for the past 40 years. Manuel Antonio beach is just one of many beaches you will find here. It is frequently named one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Unlike most resort locales, which are lined by intrusive hotels, the beaches of Manuel Antonio are bordered by natural rainforest, with an abundance of palm and almond trees reaching out from the edges of the sand, and mountains rising from behind. Facing out to the west you will find many volcanic islands dotting the sea, offering beautiful and interesting additions to your sunset memories and photos. The coast will also allow you many adventures, such as surfing and sea kayaking around the islands. Para sailing gives spectacular aerial views of this area. From the sea you can take one of the sunset sailing cruises to relax your day away. Enjoy resident dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating whales. For the fisherman, Manuel Antonio has waters filled with a variety of sports fish to challenge and entertain you. The many local restaurants will gladly prepare your day’s catch. Manuel Antonio National Park, is located on the south end of the beach. This park is one of the most visited in Costa Rica. The park 4

offers beaches, and hiking while you are surrounded by some of the most plentiful and varied plant and animal life anywhere on the planet. A friendly tour guide will have the knowledge and experience to allow you to experience the best this park has to offer. In addition to its beauty, Manuel Antonio has some of the best seafood you can find. The tropical fruits are simply fantastic and can’t be beat as a refreshing and healthy snack. If you haven’t seen a particular fruit before, be sure to give it a try. You will never enjoy fruit as juicy and fresh as that which is available here. Manuel Antonio and Quepos offer a variety of adventure tours for all to enjoy, from the adrenaline rush of the canopy zip lines, to the peaceful mangrove tours. Speed thru palm plantations on a high powered all terrain 4 track. Ride thru the mountains and explore the rainforest by horseback. Dodge white water rapids by raft or kayak. Or perhaps you prefer to snorkel or learn to scuba. Its all here, in Manuel Antonio. One of the best resources of the region, is the people that call Manuel Antonio home. The locals are some of the friendliest and most welcoming of people you can find. Anywhere you go, you will enjoy the company and tales of the person sitting next to you. Whichever manner you choose to enjoy your stay in Manuel Antonio and Quepos, you will truly learn the meaning of PURA VIDA.

Safety Advice for Swimmers

By Jose Chaves

Do you know how to identify a riptide?

A

riptide is a channel of turbulent water moving out to sea. It is an area that has a visible color change, normally due to swirling sediment from the beach, as well as foam, algae or litter moving uniformly out to sea. It can also be seen as a disturbance in the waveline coming to shore. Remember that in many cases these types of currents are imperceptible to the naked eye. Although the ocean may seem calm, riptides may be present. They are typically found on beaches with thick sediment or white sand.

How to avoid being trapped by a rip tide? Be very cautious. Ocean conditions can change at any moment. Never swim alone. If there are no lifeguards, look for signs warning of dangerous currents or ask some of the locals if the beach is dangerous.

What can I do if a riptide gets a hold of me? Try to stay calm and conserve energy. Don’t fight the current; you will lose. Swim perpendicular to the current or parallel to the beach. Once you feel that you are free of the current, swim toward shore. If unable to do this, tread water. The force of the current lessens as it goes out to sea. When the current diminishes, swim toward the shore.

If at any time you feel that you cannot reach the shore, get someone’s attention. Facing the beach and waving your arms should help.

General recommendations for all beaches. Don’t under estimate the power of the sea or the strength of the sun! Never swim alone. Always be careful while in the water. Do not swim if you are dehydrated. If you have eaten, or consumed any alcoholic beverages, wait at least 2 hours before going into the water. Ask hotel staff, lifeguards or locals about the ocean water conditions. If you haven’t been trained in first aid, are not skilled at swimming, or are not in good physical condition, NEVER try to rescue someone on your own. If you want to try any water sport such as surfing, jet skiing or others, you should know how to swim and always wear a life vest. If you are traveling with friends, do not play or joke around in a way that can put your life or that of others at risk. If you travel to the beach with children, people with physical limitations or elderly people, stay close to them and never let them out of your sight for any reason. Being responsible at the beach will insure that your vacation is a total success. Enjoy! PLAYITA • Year XI • No. 42 February-March 2014
