THE DESIGN INTENT OF THIS BUILDING IS TO CREATE A CULTURAL CENTER THAT MERGES THE FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING TOGETHER. IT IS A FORM OF CONNECTION WITHIN THE BUILDING AND OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING. THIS CENTER IS LOCATED NEAR HISTORICAL HOUSING SO IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CONNECT THE CENTER TO THOSE HOUSES ALONG WITH CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY. THE FUNCTIONS WITHIN THE BUILDING ARE VERY DIVERSE SO IT IS ALSO ESSENTIAL TO MERGE THE FUNCTIONS WITHIN THE BUILDING AS ONE TO MAKE THE EXPERIENCE IN THE BUILDING WORK TOGETHER AND FLOW FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR, ALLOWING VISITORS TO EXPLORE THE BUILDING AND ALL OF ITS FUNCTIONS

THE BUILDING WORKS WITH THE HISTORICAL NEIGHBORHOOD AND CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY. THE BUILDING IS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND RIGHT BEHIND THE CASE WESTERN BASEBALL FIELD. THIS BUILDING WILL MERGE THE TWO DIFFERENT SITES WITH THE CENTER ITSELF. THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING REPRESENTS ANOTHER FORM OF MERGING. THE WAY THE WINDOW STRUCTURES ARE DESIGNED ON THE FACADES, THEY MERGE WITH THE WOODEN EXTERIOR CREATING A UNIQUE FORM THAT MERGES FROM THE OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING. THE CONTOUR CENTER IS A MEDIA CENTER DESIGNED TO CONNECT THE SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING. THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING FLOWS THROUGH AND CONNECTS TO EACH FACADE THROUGH THE DETAILED STRUCTURES FRAMING THE RIBBON WINDOWS. THE IDEA FOR THIS MEDIA CENTER IS TO FLOW FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR AS THE FUNCTIONS CHANGE TO DIFFERENT ART FORMS. THE BLACK BOX THEATER AND THE GALLERY ARE THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF THE MEDIA CENTER. THE GALLERY WAS PLACED STRATEGICALLY ON THE TOP FLOOR WITH A TERRACE IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL GALLERY SPACE ON THE TERRACE. A KEY FUNCTION OF THE BUILDING IS THE CONNECTION THROUGH THE BUILDING AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE EXTERIOR.

LANDSCAPES THE APARTMENT COMPLEX IS BUILT ON THE IDEA OF LANDSCAPES. EACH SURFACE WITHIN THE BUILDING AND WITHIN EACH UNIT CONTAINS DIFFERENT LANDSCAPES. THERE ARE SEVEN DIFFERENT LANDSCAPES WITHIN EACH UNIT ITSELF. EACH LANDSCAPE WAS DESIGNED TO CREATE A DIFFERENT FUNCTION FOR THE USER. THIS WAY THE USER CAN USE THE UNIT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL WHILE ENJOYING DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES. THE APARTMENT COMPLEX WAS BASED ON THE DESIGN OF THE UNIT ITSELF. THE INDIVIDUAL UNIT WAS DESIGNED FIRST AND ORGANIZED WITHIN THE BUILDING STRATEGICALLY TO OPTIMIZE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE UNIT AND THE LANDSCAPES PROVIDED.
