Delivery day for future of Horton maternity service By Samantha McGregor TODAY is D-Day over the future of consultant-led maternity services at Banbury’s Horton Hospital. A decision will be made on whether to back proposals to permanently downgrade the service for maternity services at the Oxford Road hospital as part of a countywide review of health services. Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group launched the fi rst phase of a consultation in January, which included reducing the number of inpatient beds, creating central stroke unit in Oxford and the changes to the maternity unit at the Horton. The results of the consultation were revealed in June and showed that while some of the proposals were supported by respondents, the down-grading of the Horton maternity unit to be midwife-led was almost “universally” rejected. Campaigners have been fighting against the move and were boosted on Monday by the news the Oxfordshire Joint Health and Overview Scrutiny Committee has decided to refer the matter to the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt should the OCCG decide to go ahead with the plan at the meeting. Banbury MP Victoria Prentis has been spearheading the campaign against the change and at Monday’s HOSC meeting made clear the people of north Oxfordshire are “anx-

ious about the future of our hospital, frightened about the current safety of mothers and babies and angry about the process”. Mrs Prentis has previously raised concerns about the journey time it takes to get from Banbury to the John

Radcliffe should it be necessary in an emergency, with the average time from a survey found to be an hour and 40 minutes. She said: “As I have made clear, I feel that the consultation was fatally flawed. While efforts have been made

have been told that decisions regarding maternity and critical care will directly affect the provision of anaesthetic training in Banbury. “I fear this will have a knock-on effect on the recruitment of anaesthetists in future. The papers before the board do not reflect what I have been told. “Over 10,000 responses to the consultation were received by the CCG, with the vast majority against service downgrade in Banbury. “I am disappointed that the CCG are recommending that the board agrees to press ahead without listening the views of patients, rendering the consultation meaningless.” Figures from the Oxford University The people of north Hospitals Trust show there were a Oxfordshire are “anxious total of 120 births at the Horton Hosabout the future of our pital between October 3, 2016 and May hospital, frightened about 31, 2017, after the service became the current safety of mothers midwife-led. and babies and angry about Of the births 38 women had to be transferred to Oxford during labour the process” – this figure includes 8 women who Banbury MP Victoria Prentis delivered the baby but needed support speaking ahead of to deliver the placenta. today’s decision A further 16 women were transferred to the John Radcliffe for postnatal care.
