GENERAL

new thinking, innovations & solutions in a living laboratory. now.

WELCOME On 7,000 acres in Central Florida lies a vibrant community coming to life with smart design and an innovation engine at its core. Lake Nona is a place where a forward-thinking framework of sustainable design practices, smart growth features and 21st-century technology meet quality education, wellness and environmental amenities, diverse workspaces, dynamic neighborhoods and a healthcare and life sciences cluster that will offer some of the best scientific research, medical training and patient care in the nation. Lake Nona is a community with momentum uniquely positioned for impact with a goal of building a healthier world. With the health care sector on the cusp of revolutionary change, we are challenged to look ahead and collaborate with others in the field to accelerate innovation. We are inspired by this charge and the endless possibilities we can dream up together — beginning at the 2013 Lake Nona Impact Forum. As we planned this year’s Forum, we were all inspired by the compelling view that “the best way to predict the future is to invent it.” The need for open innovation has never been more evident as we move closer to reinventing health care, and we are energized by the transformative discussions and ideas that will stem from the program and shape the future of the industry. We look forward to seeing you in October.

THE LAKE NONA STORY

A new kind of community has emerged in southeast Orlando. The 7,000-acre master-planned community of Lake Nona features world-class education, medical facilities, diverse workspaces, a mix of residential options, retail and entertainment centers, environmental amenities and miles of open green space. Planned and built from scratch by Tavistock Group, Lake Nona invested the best in planning principles, design practices and smart growth features through the thoughtful integration of homes, neighborhoods, schools, trails and parks and modern infrastructure in one good-natured environment. Located next to the city’s international airport, Lake Nona is a place that offers it all. Serving as the centerpiece of the community is the 650-acre health and life sciences park known as Lake Nona Medical City. Carefully planned and laid out, Lake Nona Medical City represents a deliberate strategy to build a centralized focus of leading medical treatment, research and education in Central Florida while creating an economic development and job creation engine for the region. Lake Nona Medical City is comprised of five anchor tenants including the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, the University of Florida Research & Academic Center and Nemours Children’s Hospital, and the Orlando VA Medical Center opening next year. These institutions represent an economic bright spot in the state of Florida, with $2 billion invested in facilities and infrastructure over the last six years.

THE LAKE NONA INSTITUTE The Lake Nona Institute is a non-profit, community-focused organization that incubates, activates and measures the impact of innovative technologies and programs that can become global models for building healthy, sustainable and inspired communities. The Institute focuses on programs based on Three Pillars of Health & Wellness, Education and Sustainability. Along with collaborative partners, we seek to develop a strategic architecture for a new “health and wellness ecosystem that is designed to support optimal health within the Lake Nona community and beyond — exporting the practices and initiatives started here around the world.. We understand that individuals within the social and cultural context of a community can have a profound impact on their personal health and wellness, and we are inspired by the opportunity to be a learning laboratory to study and activate new initiatives that will have a measureable impact on health and wellness such as developing sustainable healthy behaviors across the community, improving residents health measures, and enhancing aging in place options.
