Summer Term, 2023

HORIZONS

Introduction to Horizons

The Horizons Programme aims to inspire all students to engage in and take ownership of their own educational experience through a genuine commitment to a range of artistic, cultural, intellectual and sporting opportunities.

This diverse and dynamic programme of co-curricular activities seeks to meet the interests of all students. We are passionate about ensuring that all students feel valued, fulfilled and challenged, and that they each can develop an identity that they are proud of and confident in. With wellbeing at the core of the Horizons Programme, we hope that all students will find a place where they feel a genuine sense of belonging, where they can connect with like-minded peers, explore and discover new interests, engage with their passions, whilst aspiring to and achieving excellence. The programme also contains an abundance of opportunities that supports our students in their development of the core competencies, skills and attitudes that will enable them to confidently embrace, influence and impact positively on a rapidly changing global stage.

All students should aim to sign up to at least three activities across a range of co-curricular areas, committing to these for the term. We very much hope that students will continue to develop their interests over a longer period, but would also encourage them to continue to try something new!

A dynamic and constantly evolving platform of co-curricular opportunities, the Horizons Programme intends to reflect the needs and interests of our students, utilising the expertise of our outstanding staff and student leaders so to deliver a relevant, holistic and authentic educational programme in which all students can flourish.

I hope you enjoy exploring our Summer Term 2023 programme.

MUN stands for Model United Nations. It is a simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real-world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country. Delegates engage in negotiations, discussions and lively debates; these are the cornerstones of UN activity. Model UN educates students about current events, international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. MUN also helps participants to enhance their knowledge of the world we live in, participants develop skills in public speaking and presentation, persuasion, analysis of situations, research and critical thinking.

During simulations, participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation, or NGO, in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations. This can be the Human Rights Council, the Security Council, the General Assembly, or any of the other United Nations bodies.

Participants become diplomats, researching a country, and proposing solutions to the problems of the day. Through debate, deliberation, and compromise delegates attempt to draft a United Nations resolution with clauses that address and mitigate or resolve the stated issues. Delegates then face the challenge of getting their resolution passed by a majority within the committee they are simulating.

For example, a student may be assigned the United States of America and will have to solve global topics such as nuclear non-proliferation.

MUN helps you develop confidence in leading others, gives you a stronger awareness of global issues, and the chance to make new friends (potentially from around the world). Model UN is a valuable experience that can help you get into college, find your first job, and become inspired to change the world. See you there!
