Ethnic and Racial Relations and National Configuration Summary of achievements and perspectives 1 – Building the premises of the Institution: The Institute received from the University of Brasília an excellent space to accommodate its central Office. Various works of reform and adaptations are being carried out in previously built premises in order to install the Institute with all its needs as regards the physical space. 2 – Articulations with governmental institutions: The INCT has developed institutional relationships with the following State organisms: a) The Secretary of Policies for the Promotion of Racial Equality (SEPPIR), which has provided funds for the consolidation of an observatory on affirmative Actions in Brazil; b) The Ministry of Culture, through the Secretary of Adult Education and Diversity (SECAD) and Secretary of Higher Education (SESU). c) The Ministry of Education, through the National Institute for Research in Education (INEP) 3 - Public Audiences at the Brazilian Supreme Court: The INCT was present at the Public Hearings on Affirmative Action at the Supreme Court on the 3rd, 4th, 5th of May, 2010. The Coordinator of the Institute spoke on the first day of hearings as the defender of the quota system for the admission of Blacks and Indians of the University of Brasília. In that occasion, we presented the first results on the number and performance of the students who were admitted in the public universities, nationwide, through the quotas system His presentation was based on researches

done by members of the INCT. 4 - Another result of the INCT in this project: “Encounter of Knowledges”, which is being developed at the University of Brasília with financial support from the University with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. This project is based on an interministerial agreement with the Ministry of Education with the aim of fostering the incorporation of the masters’ traditional arts and crafts in the various levels of education; in this case, for the first time ever in a Brazilian public university, various masters of different traditional knowledge’s and arts will teach a regular course at a public university. 5. International articulations: The INCT has established solid connections with universities of various Latin American countries which are developing policies and projects of ethnic, racial and social inclusion in higher education. 6. Research Themes: The INCT is organized around three decentralized nuclei of researchers in Brasília, Santa Catarina and Rio de Janeiro. During this first year of existence, each nucleus has been developing researches on their topics of interest.
