Fundamental research is being conducted at the molecular level to understand the regulation of nitrogen fixation, the mechanisms of plant-nitrogen fixing bacteria interactions, and the plant response towards inoculation with diazotrophs. The Institute also develops technological research aiming at the utilization of nitrogen fixing bacteria as inoculants for crops, the formulation of new and efficient inoculants of high quality and shelf life, and the selection of plant varieties responsive to inoculation and more efficient bacterial strains. The results of this project already have a positive effect on the productivity and sustainability of the Brazilian Agriculture, and have also contributed to the training of human resources in the fields of Molecular Biology, Genomics, Proteomics, Transcriptomics and Bioinformatics.

Summary of achievements and perspectives 1. Biochemistry and Genetics of Nitrogen Fixation: The signal transduction pathway of the ammonium-dependent inactivation of nitrogenase in Azospirillum brasilense was elucidated. 2. Plant-Bacteria Interaction: The molecular mechanism of interaction between endophytes and gramineae is being investigated. 3. Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology: Studies of gene expression profiles of sugarcane in response to the endophytic diazotrophic bacteria generated data of the transcriptome of two contrasting genotypes for BNF efficiency, allowing the identification of 7.500 possibly new genes in sugarcane. 4. Diversity of Diazotrophs: Up to now several isolates were obtained and evaluated for their PGP abilities, such as siderophore and indolic compound production, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and ACC deaminase activity. These isolates are also being identified by PCR and sequencing of the 16S rDNA or nifH genes. 5. Inoculation Technology: Diazotrophic endophytic bacteria inoculation in sugarcane, maize and rice has shown significant results in biomass increase and grain yield. Main publications 1.
