Main research topics Excitotoxicity, its consequences and strategies for neuroprotection, with a multidisciplinary basic and clinical approach Training of highly qualified human resources in the subject at postgraduate. Dissemination of knowledge in neuroscience, involving high school students, undergraduate and postgraduate. Summary of achievements and perspectives During the year 2009 and first half of 2010 (18 months) it was published 173 scientific papers, most in indexed international journals. It was presented 28 doctoral theses and 42 master dissertations and currently there are 66 theses and 31 dissertations in progress. The scientific contributions of our INCTEN lies on the advancing of the understanding of mechanisms of brain diseases involving glutamatergic excitotoxicity as well as the use of new strategies for prevention or treatment: 1) the use of guanosine, GMP and pharmacological manipulation of adenosine receptors in experimental models of cerebral ischemia, seizures, epilepsy and pain processes, 2) establishment of new markers of brain diseases and the effective preventive and therapeutic strategies, 3) better understanding of: a) neurochemical parameters of intermediary metabolism disorders, as organic acidemias; b) participation of astrocytes in brain diseases and strategies for neuroprotection; c) mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of regular exercise on the brain, d) measurement of synaptic transmission functionality by electrophysiology that can be used as markers of brain disorders and the efficacy of neuroprotective strategies, e) neurochemical parameters involved in the neurotoxicity of toxic metals and neuroprotective strategies such as the use of antioxidants and chalcogen f) neurochemical parameters involved in patients with brain traumatism.
