Grandma’s House Alice Melvin

An exquisitely detailed book to treasure and explore. Often, after school, a little girl goes to her grandmother’s house where everything is different, but always the same. She puts her coat on the hook in the hall, pours a glass of milk for herself in the kitchen and tries to reach the biscuit tin on the highest shelf in the pantry. But where is Grandma? Children will love exploring the rooms in Grandma’s house, peering through its cut-out pages from one room to the next and journeying high up into the fold-out attic in search of Grandma. Highly detailed and intricately illustrated in Alice Melvin’s trademark style, Grandma’s House is evidence of one of Britain’s shining stars of illustration going from strength to strength. Alice Melvin is a highly acclaimed artist and designer based in Edinburgh and the author and illustrator of An A to Z Treasure Hunt, Counting Birds and The High Street. She won the Booktrust Best New Illustrators Award in 2011.

A funny romp told through infectious rhymes and bold, retro illustrations from print-maker Ruth Green, Stanley’s Plan is a gentle reminder that sometimes good things come to those who wait. Ruth Green is a British print-maker who lives in Birmingham. Her striking prints, all screenprinted by hand, are inspired by mid-century design and pattern. ‘… and they all lived happily ever after…’ At least, that’s what Jill’s story book tries telling her, but she can’t help noticing that at the end of the story, one character looks far from happy. Dragon is despised by the King because all he can do is singe, burn and barbecue. So in an attempt to see her fairy tale ring true, Jill invites Dragon out of the book so she can teach him some alternative life skills. Dragon throws himself into all of Jill’s favourite things: flower arranging, fashion styling, playing the trumpet, and hosting a tea party, with disappointing results. When it seems like all hope is lost, Jill discovers Dragon has one very unique, and palatable, hidden talent... A stunning debut from an exciting illustrator, Jill & Dragon introduces a feisty, empathetic new character in Jill and reminds us that everyone has a talent, however well hidden.
