SWEET SLEEP

Yoga music CALMS ANXIETY Listening to yoga music at bedtime may lower the risk of heart trouble. A new study found that such music “has a beneficial impact on heart rate variability before sleeping.” High variability is a positive measure, showing the heart’s ability to adapt to changes. Previous research showed a link between music and a reduction in anxiety in patients with heart disease. Participants in the new study listened to two types of music on separate nights, and no music at all on the third. Soothing, meditative yoga music brought about a reduction in anxiety and an increase in heart rate variability. Pop music had the opposite effects, while silence did not cause significant changes. “Listening to soothing music before bedtime is a cheap and easy- to-implement therapy that cannot cause harm,” said researcher Naresh Sen, MD. He noted that holistic therapies such as music should not be used to replace medications, but can be used as an add-on. L-carnitine aids EXERCISE RECOVERY An examination of the effects of L-carnitine after exercise found reduced muscle soreness and injury, and increased blood flow, which contributed to recovery. L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid available in supplemental forms. Researchers looked at the results of several studies. They also determined that L-carnitine intake can help increase muscle mass, reduce body weight, and reduce physical and mental fatigue in older adults. FERMENTED FOODS

YOGURT, KEFIR touted Fermented foods, which are rich in healthful bacteria, are known to offer many benefits. Research has indicated that yogurt may lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, for example, while kimchi (fermented cabbage) has been linked to antidiabetic and anti-obesity benefits. The Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter recently identified yogurt, kefir (a tangy yogurt-like drink), cheese, kombucha (made from black tea), sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and tempeh (made from soybeans) as fermented products to include “as part of a healthy dietary pattern.” The editors cautioned that sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso can be high in sodium. SOURCE “Fabulous fermented foods,” Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter, 11/18

Heart help too A new study found that men who eat plenty of fermented dairy products are less likely to develop heart disease compared to men who don’t. Yogurt, kefir, and similar products with less than 3.5 percent fat produced the best results. On the other hand, a very high consumption of non-fermented dairy products was linked to higher rates of heart disease. Participants in the study were tracked for 20 years. AGING WELL

Soy may counter OSTEOPOROSIS Menopause often brings with it a weakening of the bones, known as osteoporosis. A recent study found that soy protein might counter the effects. It may also have a positive impact for women who have not yet reached menopause. “All women might see improved bone strength by adding some soy-based foods, such as tofu and soy milk, to their diet,” said researcher Pamela Hinton, PhD. Comfort Food IN AN INSTANT!

The popular kitchen device known as the Instant Pot has transformed home cooking. Perfect for those who wish to spend less time in the kitchen, the Instant Pot works its magic fast.

TURMERIC TOMATO DETOX SOUP dGV From Affordable Paleo Cooking with Your Instant Pot by Jennifer Robins ($21.99, Page Street Publishing, 2018)

25 minutes prep time n serves 6

4 Tbsp avocado or olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 3 large carrots, chopped 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes 1 tsp garlic, minced 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp sea salt K tsp ground black pepper 3 tsp ground turmeric 2K c low-sodium vegetable broth 1 c coconut milk K c chopped cilantro Pepitas (pumpkin seeds) (optional) Nutritional yeast (optional) 1. Press Sauté button and spoon oil into stainless steel bowl of your Instant Pot. Add onion and carrots and allow them to sauté for about 5 minutes, or until they begin to soften. 2. Add in all remaining ingredients except coconut milk, cilantro, pepitas, and nutritional yeast. Secure lid, press Keep Warm/ Cancel button and seal pressure valve. Press Pressure Cook/Manual button and use the +/- buttons to adjust time until 12 minutes is displayed.

The Instant Pot needs to build pressure—this takes anywhere from a few minutes to more than 15—before it can cook. But even with this allotted time, cooking in an Instant Pot often takes less time than making a meal over the stovetop. From soups, stews, porridges, and chili to eggs, rice, yogurt, and desserts, there’s not much an Instant Pot can’t do. Whether you already own this time-saving appliance or received one over the holidays, let these recipes help you learn all that your Instant Pot can do.

© JENNIFER ROBINS

3. Allow cooking cycle to complete, and then quickly release pressure valve and remove lid once safe to do so. Pour in coconut milk and use an immersion blender to purée until texture is uniform and smooth. If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can carefully transfer hot contents to a vertical blender. 4. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving and add pepitas or nutritional yeast, if desired. Kitchen Note: This soup sneaks in liver-essential detox aids like turmeric and cilantro. Not only will it soothe your soul, but it can do great things for your whole system! K gallon whole milk 2 Tbsp yogurt* 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

1. For best results cool empty Instant Pot inner pot in refrigerator before beginning. 2. To warm milk: Pour cold milk into Instant Pot inner pot. Secure lid, ensuring valve is turned to Sealing position. Press Yogurt button, and then press it again until display says “Boil.” This will slowly heat milk. Desired end temperature is 182°. After about 25 minutes, pot will beep, indicating that it is done. 3. Remove lid and stir well. Measure temperature of milk. It should be between 180° and 185°. If it is not quite up to temperature, put lid back on and press Yogurt button until it displays “BOIL.” Check temperature again after 5 minutes. 4. To cool milk: Press Cancel button to turn appliance off. Unplug unit. Carefully lift inner pot out, using oven mitts, and place on a cooling rack on counter. Cool milk to between 95° and 115°. Stir milk before testing temperature. Discard any milk “skin” that has formed. To speed up this process, you can place inner pot into a cold water bath. Just fill your sink with enough cold water to submerge pot halfway. 5. Incubation: Once milk has cooled to desired temperature, place inner pot back into appliance and plug in unit. Place yogurt in a small bowl and slowly stir in K cup of warm milk from inner pot. Mix well. Add yogurt mixture to inner pot and stir well. Secure lid. Press Yogurt button (you may have to press button more than once to see hourly timer) and adjust time to 8 hours. For thicker yogurt, adjust time for up to 10 hours. 6. After set time, display will read “Yogt” to let you know this phase is complete. Yogurt should be fairly thick. Add vanilla extract and stir well. Remove inner pot and cover pot with plastic wrap. Place in refrigerator to chill for 6 to 8 hours before serving. © BILL MILNE

SMART SUPPLEMENTS BY M A R I A N O Ë L G R OV E S , R H ( A H G )

FIND THE BEST MULTIVITAMIN FOR YOU FIX POTENTIAL DEFICIENCIES DID YOU KNOW THAT 9 OUT OF 10 AMERICANS’ DIETS DON’T HIT THE BARE-BONES BASELINE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KEY VITAMINS AND MINERALS, PARTICULARLY POTASSIUM, VITAMIN D, CALCIUM, AND MAGNESIUM? Multivitamins can’t make up for bad dietary choices, but they can help close the gap on nutrient deficiencies. Even Americans who aren’t technically deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral (for example, getting enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy) may not be getting optimal levels for vitality and well-being. But how do you choose the best multivitamin for you among the sea of bottles in the supplement aisle? Use this checklist to find the one that fits your needs: Natural Ingredients: Check out the fine print: Look for ingredients like d-alpha tocopherols (versus synthetic dl-alpha) for vitamin E and natural carotenoids under vitamin A, which will be better utilized by the body. Avoid synthetic flavors, colorings, and preservatives in the “Other Ingredients” list. Price? Size? Organic? Food-Based? Sometimes a lower-potency multivitamin easily outweighs a mega-dose tablet because the lower-potency multi offers high-quality forms of each ingredient. Consider paying more for the multivitamin with higher-quality vitamins and minerals—such as co-enzyme B vitamins, methylcobalamin versus cyanocobalamin vitamin B12, and the selenomethionine form of selenium. Or consider food-sourced, fermented, and/or organic multivitamins (but expect lower doses of each vitamin). These forms are generally better utilized by the body and cause less digestive upset, but they’re not cheap. If this doesn’t suit your budget, stick to a basic oncedaily multivitamin. Glance at the pill size if possible (rattle opaque bottles) to make sure it’s something you can comfortably swallow, opting for smooth edges. Capsules break down more

Approximately 80 percent of dietary supplement users take a multivitamin . . . for good reason! The majority of Americans are deficient in several key nutrients.

easily but don’t hold as much as tablets. Pop a pill in water with a splash of vinegar to get an idea of how well it breaks down. Serving Size? Look at the tiny print under “Supplement Facts” to see how many pills you’re expected to take per day to get the doses listed for each vitamin and mineral. The more pills per day, the more optimal those levels should be—especially for bulky ingredients like calcium and magnesium. (You’re usually better off taking an additional cal-mag supplement regardless of the amount offered by your multi.) If you know you’re not likely to take more than one pill per day, stick with a “once daily” vitamin, which will give you more optimal levels of micronutrients like B vitamins, vitamins C and D, and microminerals in one pill. Sensitive Stomach? High doses of B vitamins and zinc make some people queasy. Choose a two-(or more)-a-day multi so you can divide the dose, or choose a food-sourced brand. Always take your multi with food, ideally a solid breakfast. Special Needs? Multis geared toward men and

older women usually don’t contain iron and often offer additional ingredients such as lycopene and targeted herb blends (in low doses). Prenatals target healthy fetal growth with more folate and iron and less vitamin A. For the most nutrition support or for sensitive stomachs, choose a prenatal with several pills per day. If you know you’re apt to take only one, go for a once-daily formula. Some multivitamins for elders are less likely to interact with meds, but always check with your healthcare practitioner. Seek vegan or vegetarian multivitamins if you want to avoid animal ingredients. No one multi works for everyone, but in the sea of multivitamins, you’ll easily find one that’s perfect for you. WELCOME TO THE

Endocannabinoid System A VITAL PART OF HUMAN BIOLOGY, THIS SYSTEM WAS NOT NAMED UNTIL 1992

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. Q: What is the endocannabinoid system? A: About 30 years ago, cannabis research led to the discovery of the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a molecular signaling system that works to ensure homeostasis—or equilibrium—within our bodies, especially during times of stress. This was when researchers first discovered receptors for THC—a psychoactive cannabinoid from marijuana—and then, shortly afterward, the body’s own endogenous cannabinoids.

Q: What are endogenous cannabinoids? Can you be deficient in them? A: The body makes its own cannabinoid-like substances, called endogenous cannabinoids or endocannabinoids, as well as enzymes that that can produce and degrade them. These chemical compounds are a type of neurotransmitter—part of the body’s chemical messenging system. There’s 2-AG, which has been called the “workhorse” of the endocannabinoid system. When the body’s ECS works to inhibit 2-AG degradation, pain and anxiety are reduced.   Another endogenous cannabinoid is called anandamide (AEA), named after the Sanskrit word “ananda,” which means bliss. AEA is a stress-responsive endocannabinoid. Both 2-AG and AEA are derivatives of arachidonic acid, which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid. If your body is lacking in omega-3 essential fatty acids, it can’t make sufficient endogenous cannabinoids. Some people may have genetic issues that interfere with their ability to make enough endocannabinoids. Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CECD) is thought to be present in fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine conditions. Omega 3s also help grow and repair CB1 receptors in the brain. Q: What are CB1 and CB2 receptors? A: The body’s endogenous cannabinoids interact with receptors, of which there are two established subtypes: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the brain’s amygdala, basal ganglia, and hippocampus—areas of the brain that, among other attributes, are related to anxiety and fear. CB2 receptors are most abundant in immune cells. Numerous studies have shown that mice absent CB2 receptors have issues with inflammation. Both CB1 and CB2 receptors interact with both endogenous and exogenous (external) cannabinoids. Q: What is cannabidiol?

A: Both marijuana and agricultural hemp belong to the Cannabis sativa L plant species. Marijuana is rich in a cannabinoid called THC, which induces a euphoric “high.” Hemp contains so little THC it could never produce such an effect. Its primary cannabinoid is cannabidiol, or CBD.   THC is an agonist of our body’s CB1 receptors, which means it initiates a physiological response in the brain when combined with the receptor. CBD operates differently by blocking the breakdown of anandamide, which increases the presence of that endocannabinoid at receptor sites. CB2 agonists have pain- relieving and tissue-protective effects. TFL SELECTED SOURCES “The CB2 receptor and its role as a regulator of inflammation” by C. PIONEERS SERIES B Y LY N N T R Y B A

After almost 40 years of exploring the power of herbs, natural health pioneers Paul and Barbi Schulick are taking their most important lessons and creating a company they hope will contribute to the health of the global community. “There’s a certain calling one gets in one’s life. If you’re lucky enough, you get to hear that calling and follow it,” said Paul. For the Schulicks, it’s always been meditation and working with herbs. The two were meditation teachers when they met in 1975. The late 1970s brought ownership of a natural foods store, followed by Paul’s becoming a master herbalist. He still remembers the day shortly after the store opened when a woman with breast cancer came in. She had nowhere to turn for the type of information she was seeking. At that time, there was only one doctor in New England with familiarity with the science of nutrition and supplementation, Paul said. “I was humbled and scared by the responsibility.” www.tas teforl i fe.com

PIONEERS SERIES continued from page 25

The Schulicks began creating their own herbal formulations, and in 1982, launched the New Chapter supplements company, which pioneered whole-food fermentation and supercritical extraction. The Schulicks sold New Chapter to Procter & Gamble in 2012, but maintained roles with the company until the summer of 2018, when they did not renew their contracts. Instead, the Brattleboro, VT, couple returned to their entrepreneurial roots, launching a skin-health company called byOM life. The new company aims to use nutrition and herbs to support the skin’s microbiome. The company name refers both to the “biome” and the word “om,” which has played a significant role in the Schulicks’ decades of meditation practice.

New Science The human digestive system has been called the body’s “second brain” and some scientists now believe the skin—the body’s largest organ—may be the “third brain.” The epidermis contains sensors and neurotransmitters that can communicate with our central nervous system and influence emotions and whole-body states. byOM life is a way to be involved in this growing field of research and a new approach to overall skin health, Paul said. Say a person 26 tasteforlife

is struggling with an eczema breakout. She might not need another application of antibacterial cream. What she may need is biodiversity of bacteria on the skin, just like it’s needed in the gut, he said. At press time, scientists the Schulicks have worked with for years were testing the topical formulations, the first of which are scheduled to be released in the spring. Nutraceuticals will be introduced in the summer of 2020.

Looking Backward & Forward Looking back to the early years, Paul sees tremendous change in the natural health field. At the early trade shows, all the exhibitor booths could fit into one relatively small room. Today, there are “auditoriums upon auditoriums upon auditoriums of booth spaces,” he said. “Business, and sometimes greed, has entered into the marketplace. In the beginning, there was much more of an emphasis on healing.” While awareness has grown over time, “there is still need for a paradigm shift” when it comes to health, Paul said. He points to processed food as just one example. “Right there, there’s the root of lots of our disease,” he said. Eating that type of food is “energetically . . . dipping yourself in preservatives and chaos.” Paul believes that in addition to climate change, one of the biggest crises facing humankind is the crisis in the healthcare system. The United States

lags behind many other countries in terms of health despite the trillions of dollars being spent on healthcare. “We’re not getting our money’s worth,” he said. “Financial incentives have to switch from disease care to true health care,” he said. “We can learn a lot of lessons from Japan.” In Japan, a doctor—who’s typically trained in herbal medicine as well as Western medicine—won’t prescribe painkillers to someone who’s neglected their t’ai chi exercises or acupuncture treatments, Paul said. Only when they’ve done all they can will a doctor prescribe painkillers, he added. When Paul visited Japan, he noticed a marked silence and a population that was visibly much healthier than Americans. He adopted the

Japanese ritual of forest bathing, which requires time in nature, completely unplugged. “I live in a forest and I take a forest bath two to three times a day,” Paul said. Studies have shown the practice can induce relaxation and increase anti-cancer activity in the body. His new company often keeps him up until 1 a.m., reading, studying, and writing a book about his philosophies. “It never feels like work. It’s always just my life,” he said. “These days I’m working harder than ever and am amazed at how tired I feel.” But when he remembers the “global biomes we are going to be supporting,” he feels almost immediately

restored, well, and rejuvenated. “From my little vantage point, the herbal kingdom is one of our greatest allies,” he said. If properly sourced and extracted, herbs can support human health and biomes. “They give me solace. There’s still hope in this dangerous time we’re living in as a species.” TFL

SUPERFOOD DRINKS VEGGIE POWER!

IF YOU’RE SAVVY ABOUT NUTRITION, YOU KNOW THE BEST WAY TO GET YOUR VITAMINS AND MINERALS IS BY EATING A BALANCED DIET HEAVY ON THE FRUITS AND VEGGIES. But if you want to improve on the benefits you get from incorporating fresh produce into your meals, you can easily do so via superfood drinks.

Super Food, Big Benefits “Superfoods” is an umbrella term that refers to food rich in vitamins and nutrients along with inflammation-fighting antioxidants. They include leafy greens, berries, seeds, spices like turmeric, and blue-green algae. The benefits of superfoods are legion: Research has found that the antioxidants and flavonoids that many contain can ward off cancer and coronary heart disease, boost immunity, and lessen

inflammation and stress. The nutrients in fruits and vegetables up your energy and help maintain a healthy weight.

Easy to Swallow

Energy dragging? Sudden mood changes? Trouble concentrating? Sugar cravings?

Superfood drinks are made from dried, concentrated foods in powder form. They can be bought as single ingredients but are more frequently found as mixes. To get a nutritional boost, just stir a couple of tablespoons into your favorite drink. Consider these key ingredients: Greens: Powders made with mixed greens and other vegetables—beets, broccoli, chard, kale, spinach, wheatgrass, and more—support gut health. The phytonutrients, fiber, and antioxidants found in such mixes promote healthy digestion. Another benefit of the fiber is that it makes you feel full, which can help with weight-loss efforts. Leafy greens are rich in A, C, E, K, and B vitamins, plus carotenoids, calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Plants from the sea are in the mix too. The algae spirulina, for one, is 60 percent protein and contains L-phenylalanine and tyrosine, two amino acids that have been shown to promote weight loss. Berries: Blueberries, raspberries, açaí berries, cranberries, goji berries, and tart cherries—all superfruits that are berry, berry good for you—are available in powdered drink form. All are brimming with flavonoids. Açaí berries deliver amino acids and antioxidants. Blueberries provide fiber and manganese. One flavonoid in cranberries helps protect against urinary tract infections. Bonuses: Add to your berries and green veggies other ingredients found in superfood mixtures, and you’ll have a full spectrum of benefits. Matcha green tea powder, curcumin, flaxseeds, and cacao are among the many add-ins you may find in a superfood powder.

Drink Wisely Remember that superfood drink supplements are just that—supplements to a healthy diet. Use the powdered mixes as a way to enhance an already balanced diet rich in whole foods. Check with your healthcare practitioner whenever you incorporate new supplements into your regimen—this is particularly important for pregnant and breastfeeding women or if you are on certain meds. When you choose a superfood powder, look for quality. Select brands that are organically grown or grown without chemicals and processed by cold pressing or water extraction. TFL

HEALTHY FAMILY BY LILI HANFT

HOW TO REDUCE WASTE IN 2019 IDEAS AND INSPIRATION WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO HELP THE PLANET WITH OUR DAILY SHOPPING CHOICES. EVEN SMALL CHANGES—SUCH AS GETTING COFFEE IN A REUSABLE MUG RATHER THAN A DISPOSABLE ONE— ADD UP OVER TIME AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE. HERE ARE SEVEN TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR IMPACT ON THE PLANET.

1 Go local. Shopping at local businesses cuts down on transportation pollution. hoose package-free groceries when possible. Single-use 2C packaging contributes to plastic pollution. Fruits and veggies can often be found package free, and bulk bins are a great place to get the right quantity of dried beans, grains, nuts, and flours—without packaging. Bring reusable bags and containers to fill up.

3 Use reusable water bottles and straws. Disposable plastic bottles may contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as BPA that can leach into the water. They—and plastic straws—are significant contributors to plastic pollution and the harming of fish and wildlife. Microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles, are now impacting our water supplies. Americans use an estimated 50 billion water bottles each year. We use more than 500 million plastic straws daily. Look for alternative straws made of metal, biodegradable silicon, glass, or paper.

4 Shop secondhand. In addition to reducing consumption of new resources to make all those new clothes, dishes, and furniture, thrifting saves money!

5 Support artisans when gift shopping. Check out your local craft fair to buy handmade, one-of-a-kind gifts that support the local economy and artisans rather than corporations with questionable environmental practices.

6 Reduce food waste. The USDA reports that 30 to 40 percent of all food produced in the United States is wasted. To limit waste, shop with a meal plan in mind, buy only what you need, and get creative with leftovers.

7 Choose nontoxic body care, beauty, and cleaning products. Ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, and microbeads can harm marine life once they enter waterways. Green alternatives are easy to make at home with ingredients such as coconut oil (for body care) and white vinegar (for cleaning) at a fraction of the cost— and environmental impact—of conventional products. Making planet-friendly choices can be fun and empowering. An added bonus: Many of the choices that are good for the planet are also great for your wallet and your family’s health. TFL

FOOD FOR THOUGHT BY KELLI ANN WILSON

NATURAL HEALING FOR BODY AND MIND EXPLORE WAYS TO BOOST PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals by Christopher Vasey, ND ($14.99, Healing Arts Press, 2018) Although it’s a new year, the viruses and other microbes that make us sick are still up to their old tricks. Far too often we have come to rely on antibiotics to cure what ails us, but the threat of antibiotic resistance has many of us seeking other solutions. Christopher Vasey, naturopath and detoxification expert, offers safe and effective alternatives to pharmaceuticals in Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals. Vasey is quick to point out that antibiotics are incredibly important and are the best solution in critical cases, but most of us would be better served with herbs and other natural remedies. One of the greatest benefits of natural antibiotics is that they generally have no adverse side effects on the good bacteria that live in our guts, thus preserving the integrity of our microbiome, whereas pharmaceuticals do not discern between the good and the bad and wipe out everything. In addition to his discussion of 18 potent antibiotic and antiviral herbs, Vasey includes tips for boosting the immune system and restoring healthy gut bacteria if pharmaceuticals are necessary.

The Microbiome Breakthrough by Raphael Kellman, MD ($15.99, Da Capo Press, 2018) Could our microbiomes be the key to better mental health? With millions of adults in the US affected by mood disorders including anxiety and depression, experts have a lot of incentive to explore the microbiome’s effect on our mental well-being. Dr. Raphael Kellman, an internist and expert on gut health, explores the link between gut bacteria and mood in The Microbiome Breakthrough. Dr. Kellman leads readers on an exploration of what he calls the “Whole Brain”—the brain, gut, microbiome, and thyroid gland— illustrating ways to reduce inflammation and build a healthy microbiome to improve brain function. Dr. Kellman’s practical tools are designed to improve focus, memory, and mood using proven natural solutions. Included is a guide to brain-friendly foods, a complete meal plan accompanied by over 50 recipes, and supplement recommendations for various conditions.

CURCUMIN RESEARCH ROUNDUP FROM COOKING TO MEDICINE, TURMERIC OFFERS AN ARRAY OF BENEFITS TURMERIC IS NAMED “THE GOLDEN SPICE” FOR THE COLOR IT BESTOWS TO CURRIES, MUSTARDS, AND TRENDY LATTES. IN WHATEVER FORM YOU ENJOY IT, KNOW YOU’RE DISHING UP HEALTH BENEFITS WITH EVERY BITE OR SIP. A compound in turmeric called curcumin serves the body as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. From joints to the brain, curcumin offers numerous health benefits.

Joint Benefits The anti-inflammatory action of curcumin helps calm painful joints of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Research shows that knee pain—as well as overall quality of life—improves for those with osteoarthritis when they regularly use curcumin supplements. These perks come without the side effects associated with conventional pain relievers. Many people with joint pain use NSAID medications (such as ibuprofen and aspirin) that can irritate the stomach and harm the liver. Here’s where curcumin shines. This herb has no such side effects—it’s easy on the gut and protective of the liver. Curcumin taken with another herbal extract called boswellia can be even more effective for joint pain relief. Each of these herbs, when taken alone, eases joint pain. However, taking them together brings better pain control. This was found in a three-month study of people with osteoarthritis. The combination product in this study was based on 500

milligram (mg) capsules containing 350 mg curcuminoids and 150 mg boswellic acid, taken three times daily.

The Mind and Moods Ongoing low-grade inflammation harms brain function over time, serving as one of the instigators of cognitive decline. When older adults supplement with curcumin, it can make a real difference in terms of better working memory. Curcumin may also lift mood. When healthy older adults (ages 60–85) supplemented with curcumin daily for at least a month, their mood improved when compared to those taking placebos. People felt more calm and content, and experienced lower stress levels. But what about those who are depressed? Studies in these populations also show mood-lifting and anti-depressant effects. Turmeric in the Kitchen . . . and in a Bottle Turmeric can be added to food such as curries, but many people prefer supplements of a standardized extract as a more reliable way to garner significant therapeutic effects. Because the curcumin in turmeric is poorly absorbed in the gut, effective products combine curcumin with a pepper extract to increase absorption. This herb can interact with some prescriptions, including blood thinners and certain ulcer meds. High amounts of curcumin during pregnancy could, in theory, trigger contractions, so don’t supplement with it at that time. Skip this herb if you have gallstones.

SPECIAL DIETS B Y L I S A FA B I A N

THE KETO DIET IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

SOME EATING PLANS PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS; OTHERS ENCOURAGE WHOLE-BODY WELLNESS. THE KETOGENIC DIET—KETO FOR SHORT—IS A DIET THAT EMPHASIZES BOTH, AND THIS HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ITS POPULARITY.

The keto diet’s strict low-carbohydrate eating plan is based on consuming high amounts of fat, moderate amounts of protein, and low amounts of carbs. On this eating plan, about 70 to 75 percent of caloric intake is derived from fats, 20 percent from protein, and 5 to 10 percent from carbs. The keto diet encourages weight loss by introducing a metabolic state known as ketosis. This state causes the liver to create ketone bodies, which are molecules the body produces during starvation, fasting, or carbohydrate restriction. Ketosis shifts the body’s metabolism away from glucose—an energy source originating from carbs—and toward fat burning. Ketosis usually begins three to four days after the start of the diet, forcing the body to begin burning stored fats.

Historically, the keto diet was prescribed for treating challenging cases of epilepsy, particularly in children. Some recent studies have found that the diet can help those with diabetes better control their blood sugar. Experimental research has shown a link between the keto diet and slowed growth of certain tumors. Human studies involving brain tumors indicate promising results as well. Benefits of the diet also include the ability to build and preserve muscle tissue, reduce weight, and control the appetite. Those following the keto diet don’t usually experience the slowdown in metabolism that typically occurs when people follow a low-fat diet. Grass-fed and wild animal meats, wild-caught fish and seafood, and poultry and eggs are some of the protein sources on the keto diet. Consumption of healthy fats such as ghee, clarified butter, and coconut, avocado, macadamia, and olive oils is encouraged. Nuts, seeds, and some vegetables are OK, but most fruits and starchy veggies are excluded. Processed foods, items high in carbohydrates, all grains, sugar and other sweeteners, tropical and high-carb fruits and juices, most soy products, and refined fats and oils are avoided.

Diet Drawbacks For many, weight loss is one of the most appealing benefits of the keto diet. Yet some surmise it may not be the healthiest way to drop pounds. When starved of carbs, the body’s liver makes and then delivers ketones to the bloodstream. An overabundance of

ketones can change the blood’s chemical balance and lead to dehydration. High-fat diets are associated with obesity and heart disease. Rich in fats, the keto diet emphasizes the consumption of animal proteins like red meat. Eating large amounts of this protein may increase cancer risk in some people. The keto diet may have the potential to help some cancer patients. However, depending on the type of cancer and treatment, some individuals may not be able to break down the protein and fat amounts, leading to digestive issues. An analysis of over a dozen clinical trials found that those on keto diets tended to lose more weight and keep it off than those on low-fat diets. Those following a keto diet had lower blood pressure and triglycerides and higher HDL (good) cholesterol. The trials also found that the subjects’ LDL (bad) cholesterol levels increased. Since the keto diet is generally high in saturated fat, this result was not surprising. Eliminating food groups can be difficult, so sticking to this eating plan can be challenging. Certain people have found that the weight comes back once they go off the plan and return to their old way of eating. Discuss this or any new diet with your healthcare provider or a dietitian before starting. People with kidney disease should not follow high-protein versions of the keto diet.
