PROJECT 1

MULTI-USE URBAN COMPLEX

THE PROJECT The task was to design multi-use urban complex that offers spaces for living, entertainment, leisure and commerce. This icludes accommodation facilities in the form of a hostel of furnished apartments as well as all supporting facilities for the accomodation, fitness center, gym with swimming pool, restaurant, indoor parking facilities and any relevant commercial use.

THE SITE The site is located in the parking of the German Jordanian University school of architecture, at the intersection of one of Amman’s oldest streets. It links between the upper and lower streets through a pedestrian urban stair. The site includes three plots of different sizes and you can select your own site boundaries within the existing plots.

PROJECT 2 HOUSING PROJECT

THE PROJECT Our site takes place in an area on the outskirts of the city of Amman caled “Marka. During the beginning of the 20th century, Marka received thousands of immigrants which made it home for many low income housing projects. The families that live there were given core houses with basic rooms (bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette), and they were given the opportunity to expand their houses -only vertically- when they could. Many of the families are now working of expanding their homes, with privacy as their main concern. Therefore, they tend to build their houses with no or little openings from the outside, and with small gardens that hide behind their high fences. The site also has little or no shared spaces between the housing However, The site is known for its small alleys and path ways between leading to small dead-ends people park their

public units. really them, where cars.

THE CONCEPT Inroducing an enhanced low icome housing typology system by reorganizing the existing urban fabrication components were critical regarding allies and dead-end streets, which introduce further introverted sub communities. In this new system the alley was introduced as a further socially inclusive, dwelling friendly spaces, whose potentials can be defined by the residents who may occupy these spaces and customize their performmance.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE GROUP WORK

Our site is located in a mixed use district in Jabal Amman-Jordan, which contains various types of users and accommodates different events and activities.

Our project was designed in a way to adapt with the surrounding events in the area depending on the users, the time and the day.

A place that offers an institue where people can get the chance to design and build their own living spaces (the booth in the market, the book shelves, the chair for the movie night, the canopy fot the car).

LOCATION

FUHEIS Is a town in the Jordanian governorate of Balqa just 20 kilometers northwest of Amman. The town has 20,000 residents, and the majority is Christian. Jordanian citizens make up 87% of the population.

The population of Fuheis increases to about 20,000 in the summer as many of city residents who have emigrated to the united states and europe return of their summer vacations.

In the past decades, inhabitants of Fuheis were increasingly moving to newly developed areas near the commercial strip, this has resulted in the diminishing of activities and businesses in the old city center.

Urban sprawl is heading towards Amman However, this can be halted and inverted by establishing new attraction points in the old city and keeping people attached to it.

ANALYSIS

LAND USE

The map shows the types of land plots used for the proposed interventions and the relation between the distribution of residential, commercial and public spaces on these land plots.

SOCIAL NODES

ACTIVITIES

Having surveyed social nodes in relation to activities, two correlated maps show where various social groups meet in relation to activities they are intrested in. These two maps helped in the design stage of the proposed area to target age groups and intersts.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

TRANSPORTATION ROUTES

POLLUTION MAP

This map helped determine aprroximately this districts to be affected by the proposd interventions .

Forced mobility is a cause of excess use of automobiles to reach poorly designed recreational places and supply stores. This has a bad effect on the environment. Introducing hybrid pedestrian oriented streets that meet the needs of the people should have a reversing effect that benefits daily routines, attitudes and the environment.

VISTION

Consolidation of the identity of Fuheis city and its various characteristics through working on areas that have certain delicate traits and pivotal influence on the whole city, through establishing solutions that enquire the capability to adapt into transmuting utilizations

GOALS

Pedestrian asset

Improvement

of

intersections.

Reestablishing the heart of the city

Emphasize social interaction

Adaptation and rehabilitation of old buildings; introducing new functions.

Constructing public events and seasonal fairs .

Improvement of walking pavements.

Reconnection of old city through the pedestrian organization and public t r a n s p o r t a t i o n

Sustaining public space through the implementation pf plazas and urban f u r n i t u r e

Management of traffic through the establishment of a new ring road.

Raising local awareness of cultural heritage and history.

Reinforcing public institutions and foundations .

People’s lives are ever so changing, and every social class has its own different interests. Based on this theory, it is logical to create or construct a structure that can adapt to its surrounding environment; a structure that can enhance and support the characteristics of the locals and amplify their attachment to their space.

THE STRUCTURE This structure to implement This structure to establish local needs it can also

is open source, modular, low cost system that people in local communities can use as a tool a wide range of shared functions in public space. Building materials can be new or recycled. proposes to share things in public space as an alternative to state or privat ownership and hereby new commons. When the system is implemented in an area, it can grow in relation to and wishes. This structural system can be seen as a do it yourself urban planning tool, encourage people to build their own structure and hereby influence their local urban environment.

PART 2

INDIVUDUAL WORK

SITE ANALYSIS

THE CONCEPT

After studying the greenery and activities map, it was shown clear that the city of Fuheis had and still mantains an identity that the localas take pride in. Therefore, it is essential to consolidate it and maintain it because the abandoned buildings located in the old town of the city is a strong verification that the heritage and hstory of this area is enchanted.

After overlapping the maps, asolution has occurred. Utilization to the greenery located in the area, not just by existing, but by utilizing it; introducing it to the people in an engaging spirit through the structure by using it in different events and functions that are indirectly allocated to the activities located in the map, and eventually rechanneling the destination of the youth from the commercial strip towards the old town.
