UCTION In todays fast pace modern society we are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information. It becomes near impossible to breakdown everything we see and take it in, because of this do we seemingly miss out things that as individuals we would find interesting or important?

We never have time to actually sit down and watch the world go by. We are too busy in routines and mindless tasks. The parks

are empty and the cities are over crowded. We take things at face value; take one glimpse at things then we cast them away, just to be replaced with some thing new and more exuberant. We hear one thing and then believe it, we don’t have that desire to find out for ourselves. We want it on a plate and fed to us. Public Ignorance can be found in all of us and it’s up to us to decide if we believe in what we have been told or not.

We’re here to slightly change that, things you already know might not be true, and the things you see might not actually appear to be what they are. Take your time and embrace the moment.

Mauna Kea, the highest point on the island of Hawaii. The inactive volcano is a modest 4,206m (13,799 feet) above sea level, but when measured from the sea bed to its summit, it is 10,200m (33,465 feet) high – about threequarters of a mile taller than Mount Everest. As far as mountains are concerned, the current convention is that ‘highest’ means measured from sea level to summit; ‘tallest’ means measured from the bottom of the mountain to the top.

WHAT’S THE NAME OF THE TALLEST MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD?

MOUNT EVEREST?

WHERE IS THE DRIEST

Antartica. Parts of the continent have seen no rain for two million years. A desert is technically defined as a place that receives less than 254 mm (10 inches) of rain a year. Antartica’s average annual rainfall is about the same, but 2 per cent of it, known as Dry Valleys, is free of ice and snow and it never rains there at all. 24

The MMS scale. In the last decade, the Richter scale has been suspended in a seismological circles by the Moment Magnitude Scale or MMS.

measures the strength of the shock waves, which do not fully describe an earthquake’s impact. On the Richter scale, large earthquakes may have the same score but causes widly different degrees of devastation.

The MMS was devised in 1979 by seismologist Hiroo Kanamori and Tom Hanks (no relation) of California Institute of Technology, who found the Richter scale unsatisfactory because it only

HOW MUCH OF OUR

BRAINS DO WE USE? One hundred per cent. Or 3%. It’s commonly said we only use 10 per cent. This usually leads to discussions of what we might do if only we could harness the other 90%. In fact, all of the human brain is used at one time or another. On the other hand, a recent paper by Peter Lennie of the New York University Centre for Neural

Science indicates that the brain should ideally have no more than 3 % of neurons firing at any one time, otherwise the energy needed to ‘reset’ each neuron after it fires becomes too much for the brain to handle.

Not a goldfish, for starters. Despite its status as a proverbial fact, a goldfish’s memory isn’t a few seconds long. Research by the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth in 2003 demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colours and sounds. They were trained to push a lever to earn food reward; when the lever was fixed to work only for an hour a day, the fish soon learned to activate it at a correct time. 70

WHICH USES MORE MUSCLES, SMILING OR FROWNING?

74

Winsome greetings cards and unsolicited emails assure is that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile – the idea being that you may as well cheer up and be happy, as it takes less effort than bieng a sourpuss. Unfortunately, it’s not strictly true. It actually takes one more muscle to smile than to frown. There are fifty-three muscles in the human face, twelve of which are needed for a nice big smile, while only eleven are needed to frown. 75

Apricots. The ‘orange jam’ at the heart of Britain’s eighth most popular biscuit is actually apricot pulp, sugar and a squirt of tangerine oil. The assertion appeared in the Daily Telegraph in September 2002.

WHAT’S THE MAIN INGREDIENT OF AIR? Nitrogen. As every twelve-yearold knows, it accounts for 78 per cent of the air. Less than 21 percent is oxygen. Only three hundredths of 1 per cent in the air is carbon dioxide. The high percentage of nitrogen in the air is a result of volcanic eruptions during the formation of the Earth. Vast amounts of it were released into the atmosphere. Being heavier than hydrogen or helium it has stayed closer to the surface of the planet.

‘Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.’

WHAT’S A RHINO’S HORN MADE FROM? A rhinoceros horn is not, as some people think, made out of hair. It’s made out of tightly packed strands of keratin fibres. Keratin is the protein found in human hair and fingernails as well as animal claws and hooves, birds’ feathers, porcupine quills and the shells of armadillos and tortoises. Rhinos are the only animal to have a horn that is entirely made from keratin.

WHAT COLOUR IS NICOTINE? If you said ‘yellow’ or ‘brown’ go to the bottom of the class. Nicotine is colourless. Nicotine is found in all plants of the solanaceae, or nighshade family, which includes tobacco, deadly nightshade, tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines and chilli peppers. In theory, cigarettes can be made out of potato or tomato leaves and some programmes designed to help people to stop smoking also advise giving up potatoes and tomatoes in order to eliminate low-level nicotine intake completely.
