This arrangement of Yu-hsien Teng’s Pining for the Spring Breeze (lyrics by Lin-chiu Lee) was created with the intention of having a combination of jazz influences (harmonies and quasi improvisation) and classical romantic influences (runs, ornaments, and flourishes). The first recording of the original piece was released by Columbia Records in 1933.

Pining for the Spring Breeze was commissioned by MalletLab for the 2018 International Online Mallet Competition. The world premiere of this arrangement was performed in November 2018 by Ava Machado at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the United States. Ava was the Division 2 First Prize winner of the 2018 MalletLab International Online Mallet Competition.

PERFORMANCE NOTES Similar to my arrangement of Over the Rainbow, I wanted to keep the simplicity of the original melody of Yu-hsien Teng’s Pining for the Spring Breeze in this arrangement. The runs and flourishes in the arrangement function as ornaments to accompany the simple melody. Take some freedom within the runs and flourishes; however, maintain the overall pulse to avoid distorting the rhythmic flow of the melody. Pay attention to the tenutos within the runs. These tenutos highlight the important note(s) in each line (usually the bass note of a harmony). The arpeggiation markings of chords are merely suggestions. Feel free to play all chords, marked or unmarked, as you wish (arpeggiated or block). However, be sure to vary the arpeggiation of chords and always note the important voice in the chord(s), most frequently the soprano voice.
